He fell in love with Supergirl fully knowing that she would eventually die in the Crisis - but some unexplained time paradox actively has her participating in the Legion - how could that be if she had died in the 20th century?
Brainy later built an android copy and programmed her to simulate human emotions so it would fall in love and sacrifice itself for him. Could he have been suffering the first stages of the nervous breakdown which would ultimately lead to his creation of Omega?
Then, in the next stage of the Legion's evolution, Brainy falls for Andromeda...who, post-Zero Hour morphs into a seven foot giantess with attitude up to her eyeballs.
Under the term "hopeless romantic" - is there a picture of Brainy in the encyclopaedia?

Doubtful, in the days before the Space Anomaly/Fires Of Creation scheme of things, Brainy and Lyle were grudging colleagues - if not partners...
