I'm inclined to post most of my thoughts in the "calling the roll" thread, but it usually takes a little while for Todd to put it together so I'll just ramble off some reactions:

-- Ferro threatening to rearrange someone's vertebrae?!? Speaking of spines, looks like Mr, Nolan has definitely grown one.
-- Speaking of trash talk, Sensor's attitude is definitely harsher in tone than the snake's.
-- Now that Ferro says he no longer feels a need to hide his face, I almost wish he never changes back to human form. If he does, is he gonna take it off? Or will it still be fused to his face? The helmet and his self-consciousness about his looks was something I always identified with (as a lot of other adolescent boys could I imagine).
-- It's too bad we couldn't see a more fair Triad vs. Karate Kid duel.
-- The notion of Universo taking over everyone is *again* kinda like the Borg/Blight/Robotica theme in a different medium (telepathy) but at least there's a singular protagonist this time.
-- This is my fav ish of the run so far since it actually takes place in the real world and we see more of what Universo is about, how he used the Titanet tower etc. Now that things seem to have gotten underway, it's going to be over next issue? Definitely not ideal pacing, imo.

I really enjoyed the issue!

I wish we'd gotten to see more of the Karate Kid/Ferro/Sensor teaming for old times sake.

I'm kind of perplexed by Dreamer as a choice for the cover, since she's not really that important to the issue.

I'm betting the Ferro-trapped-in-iron-form thing is just a stepping stone to another transformation. I think he'll end up looking completely different.

Perhaps the Halpashar priests could help Sensor become comfortable with her new appearance? I'd really like to see one of them become a Legionnaire...

I agree that I'd like to see more of the Val/Triad fight. At least he seems to consider her a challenge...

Mistake: Ferro should not have recognized Wildfire. Last time he saw him he was called ERG-1 and wearing a much dorkier looking suit.

I'm betting Imra breaks free of Universo's control early in the next issue.

Well I agree on so many points, including looking foreward to the calling the roll.

For me, KK and Ferro have not been written this well in a very long time and Steeple is just a wonderful creation. Ferro is not totally grown up, yet is not so...well for the want of a better word, wimpy. KK is now the strong silent type and I REALLY did notice the lack of speach. Actually I would have thought it better if DnA hadn't drawn attention to it on p. 18. As a reader I like to be held responsible for some of the thinking.

The Art:

There were several pages that I just found stunning. I think Batista favors KK, because this character just STANDS OUT in every panel in which he appears! I'm one that really likes the colors and style of Jeckie, though I do not think of her as a pre-boot character.

Fight scenes, particulary KK's and the depictions of Invisible Kid's power had me wishing for a Geoff John's style entire issue plots be damned fight fest. The Tri-Jitzu scene on p. 18 was not just a testiment to DnA's respect for the wishes of Triad supporters here, but also of KK's.

That scene is big size poster material .

DnA really paid attention to powers, teamwork, and how they would and should be used. Unique? Yes because it is rare that you have Legionnaire against Legionnaire.

Major upsides:
p1 Marvel style splash panels and info updates
The mini team of Ferro, KK, Shikari, and Jeki
Universo always gets the last word/thought
Fight scenes
Steeple
Strength is artificial

Downsides:
Ferro as Projectile: cliche and old
Ferro's impotence
Vi as a giant: just old
All the faces the same shape
The bright facial highlighting inhibited the emotions of p. 9 (though I LOVED the scene around the table. Like the diner scene from issue #20, there is so much there).

Well, I leave SOMETHING for others to say.

Blockade -talk as much as you want because you make some great points.

As for the Steeple priests helping Jekka deal with her new appearance... I kind of thought that was the point of Jekka talking with Ferro and the impact his situation may have on her. I read it through kind of quickly during lunch, but I got that impression. Of course, I have pulled stranger ideas out of my nether regions before.

I really liked the issue after a quick run-through. I'm looking forward to reading it again when I get home tonight.

Yeah, I think the Ferro-Sensor talk was definitely meant to have implications for Sensor adjusting to her appearance. I don't think her problems are anywhere near over, though, and I think some time either with Ferro or the monks would do her a lot of good...

A few additional points of interest, in case you can't resist spoilers:

Those who guessed that the Titanet empowered and freed Universo were correct. But if Universo is Titanian, as he indicates, why does he have pointy ears?

As anticipated, Shikari and Sensor suffer no permanent ill effects or changes crossing the threshold to Steeple. Their return with KK and Ferro to Legion World is even easier, thanks to Brainy's foresight.

Ferro was healed off-screen by the "harmonic powers" of the monks. I like the "new" Ferro, frozen in his bio-metal form. He just looks ... well, stronger.

The monks provide KK and Ferro with torques containing "harmonic crystals" that allow them to tap into Sensor's abilities, protecting them from psionic attack. But it turns out they impede KK's reflexes and strain Sensor's powers, and don't work too well against Universo after all.

Dreamer is strapped to the same type of confinement chair as Imra. Universo claims to have planted the image of Darkseid in Nura's mind to hide the threat he himself posed. "There's no Darkseid", he says. "That old evil is long gone from the stars."

Imra shows some signs of struggle and even mutters Universo's name.

Everyone's down at the end, finished off by a psi-blast from Universo, except that Sensor is seen trying to regain control.

Next issue: Deep, Dark, Truthful Mirror.

Some wild speculation:

Even if Imra does awaken next issue, I don't know how she could (1) escape from the confinement chair, or (2) get past the hypnotized Legionnaires, unless she gets some assistance from Sensor. I can't see either taking down Universo alone.

It's possible that Universo is wrong about one thing. Darkseid IS real, and it's Universo himself who's inadvertently awakened him by taking his image in vain. The solicitation for issue #23 (on the last page) suggests this might be true: "And .. somewhere .. Darkseid is lurking".

Very good issue overall, though I'm not a big fan of heavy fight scenes. The artwork is spectacular, imo.

More serious thoughts forthcoming once I let the issue digest for a bit.

Very positive reaction, but also want to digest for a bit...

The art is really shaping up VERY nicely.

Plus, Karate Kid is really starting to grow on me (still wish he'd change the name, though).

Triad, as always, kicked ass. I didn't realize her trijitsu was that powered-up, even in brainwashed mode -- you'd think a Carggite with three distinct personalities would be at a slight disadvantage where something like synchronized martial arts is concerned (compared to "normal" Carggites, at least).

Posted by Awkward Pause Boy on :

Drake, I don't think Ferro was threatening to do anything with Sensor's vertebra. I think he was just warning her that Karate Kid would have.

Funny how Sensor forgot that she looked so different, she's only obsessed about it.

But, at least she was not as harsh in this issue as she was last.

Sensor & Shikari didn't mention that everyone was under the illusion that Darkseid was attacking?

And they decide that the best plan of action is to attack Universo with tons of Legionnaires present and under his control? I'd expect Sensor and Karate Kid to better appreciate stealth.

I suppose that ties into my overall feelings about the issue. In the last issue, the plan was clearly "discovery and escape." Here it just seemed to be "wander into a fight and get beaten."

It does a good job of introducing Universo, though. And I can't wait to get the finale.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

I do agree that the total lack of a plan on behalf of the Legionnaires was a bit of a weakness to the issue... especially when Universo had already used the Legionnaires against Sensor and Shikari last issue. But maybe they have more up their sleeve than we've realized so far...

Posted by Caleb on :

When Kari and Jekka escaped, the entire Legion was on Legion World. Perhaps they didn't expect the Legion to be on Titan.

Posted by Reep on :

I was somewhat ambivalent about the prior issues of Dream Crime, but this issue is quite fun. I agree with much expressed thus far.

The team of KK, Ferro, & Sensor immediately suggested the "team" of Shooter's first L's. It was nice to see them and Shikari being the "last-stand" Legion while the rest were enthralled. I'm one who seems to like the action centering around the "core" L's, but I gotta admit it was very refreshing and even exciting to see this team take the spotlight and go into action.

KK vs Triad's Tri-jitsu: gotta see more of this. KK has to win though. Interestingly, Nemesis Kid defeats KK, Triplicate Girl defeats Nemesis Kid, and KK would defeat Triad.

Sensor's new look keeps looking sharper every ish.

The coloring was particularly striking this issue. Perhaps it was that all L's were present and that Warp transportation page. Colorist's name is Jason Wright. Don't know if he's done prior issues, but due credit for this one.

I had been thinking it probably would be best to write out KK & Ferro from the team, but after this issue, their new personality developments present great interaction potential with other L's, so keep 'em around!

I still hope Darkseid isn't really coming back. But maybe DNA will find an novel way to depict him.

Overall, best issue since the Computo issues, maybe since Ra's. Disagreements?

Kind of a Legion Rock-Paper-Scissors deal?

I like it...

So if Ferro is stuck in iron form, how does he eat? can he feel things like normal or is he going to have to exist in a state of detachment from his surroundings in his iron form? His mask is frozen to his face so is his uniform as well? No going to the bathroom that's for sure.

I hope they address this at some point.

I also hope DnA pick up on the Ferro/ Triad tension from earlier.

Minor gripe from a Wildfire fan, but when he blasted Ferro, he should have at least sent him across the room whether he was immune to his energies or not! Wildfire isn't Sun Boy -- he doesn't just make flames, y'know! >harumph!<

That whole scene left something to be desired...

Well I suppose that depends upon where your allegiances lie? [Smile]

Just having Ferro be effective as a fighting foe made it fun for me. I don't know that Ferro was effective in hurting Wildfire, but momentum is momentum. Drake has a point that Ferro should have been backed off by the energy blast, but he is shown reacting to it in the top panel.

This issue wasn't so much about who fights best as it is about who fights who best.

A remark that came to me reading the Roll Call thread, Lyle SHOULD get taken down easily by Shikari due to her powers versus his.

There is a lot of the paper-rock-scissors thing going on in this issue. Maybe more than I've ever seen (or at least remember). The more comments I read here, the more I'm made to think about the writing of this issue. I'm appreciating it's complexity.

I LOVE Battista's art. I hope DC enslaves him into drawing the Legion for the rest of his natural life.

The story was kind of predictable this issue, but the artwork was so good, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

With Dreamer dominating the cover, I was disappointed that she didn't have a prominent role in the story. She barely appears, and only as an unconscious hostage. I hope that it is she and not the ubiquitous Imra who escapes Universo's control next issue.

I too was disappointed that that damn Tinya Buttinsky Girl cut short the fight between K Kid and Triad. That was awesome stuff. And who says K Kid has to win? My money's on Luornu. Tinya, butt out and let's have a rematch.

A couple of possible mistakes I have to point out. Was not Ferro maskless when he was crippled and frozen in his iron form? So, why is his mask fused to his face?
I'm assuming he doesn't have to eat or breathe or use the potty in iron form. I think they should change his name to Ironic :-)

Also, the Legionnaires are shown phasing through the threshold thingies to meet Universo on Titan on their own, with nary a Kwai cruise director in sight. I thought only the Kwai could navigate those things.

Posted by jimgallagher on :

P.S. I'm really starting to like Sensor's new look. I don't think it's very logical that she doesn't simply use her power to cloak her new body in an illusion of her old one, nor that her personality has completely changed because of her physical change,

BUT---I hated the snake AND her syrupy sweet personality, so I'm glad of the changes.

I can now disassociate the new Sensor from both her previous snake form and the preboot Projectra, and see her as a new and unique character.

That''s hilarious, Joe! Cracked me right up.

But seriously, folks. Maybe the PTB on Titan decided to mark Universo as an "armed and extremely dangerous" mega-telepath by shaving his head and cropping his ears, in case he ever escaped custody.

Or maybe he's just a mutant mega telepath with a bum eye.

I was thinking he might use the green harmonic stones to make himself a new hypnotic eye or something... Guess he doesn't need it anymore.

Posted by Fat Cramer on :

No reason Universo couldn't be a mixed race - or even a different race of Titanian. Maybe he's some mutant, which is why he had such exceptional mental powers.

Some random thoughts after a first read-through:

The colors are beautiful, especially the Warp-Way. Jason Wright is the same guy who did the "yellow issue" that so many of us complained about (#13); of course, he's done the others also, but when someone above commented on the colors, I thought about the "yellow period"...

Looks like M'onel remembers, even under mind-control, that Sensor knocked him flat, since he seems quite keen on bringing her down.

I like the way Shikari crouches, rather than sits -on the sword rack, with knees on the table. But she doesn't have a name for Karate Kid?

Ferro does seem more mature now. Should be some interesting developments with his new form. But I agree, he should have at least been knocked down by the force of Wildfire's blast; Spark's lightning affected him more. Is iron a big conductor of electricity?

Invisible Kid very nicely drawn, half visible. And nice how Shikari takes him out without turning around.

Triad's half-skirt is close enough to a cape for me. Looks great with the tri-jitsu.

Sensor has a very dark shadow on her face when she says "Oh no" at the end .... maybe she sees Darkseid standing behind Universo, ready to squash him?

Universo certainly seemed to be ....um....interested in Nura. Looked like he was getting pretty familiar there....

I haven't read hte issue yet, but I'm wondering: is Universo for sure from Titan? I know he was in the "Universe Ablaze" mini, but I wasn't sure if that was in continuity or not.

I only ask because it might be possible that he was being detained on Titan because of the nature of his powers, not because he WAS a Titanian. Who better to imprison a mentalist than a race of mentalists?

Posted by Awkward Pause Boy on :

I still say that when they saw all of the legionnaires hovering near Universo, that the team should have backed off.

But mostly I just want to ask: Didn't Shikari have more armor in previous fights? More than a face mask and spikey shoulder pads, that is.

The first page refers to Universo as "the most powerful - and dangerous - telepath ever produced by the psionic people of Titan."

hopefully there's alot more to Universo than that, but they sure are boxing themselves in. this makes mysterious Universo nothing more than a "Titanor", who was seen in the early postboot story about the prison in the sun (forgot the title). and, if he's just escaped from imprisonment, why does he have that cool costume on?
do prisoners on titan all wear capes?
i enjoyed the issue but i agree it's taken along time to get to this point in the plot. Batista draws sensor pretty damn well. she's exciting to watch in action. but i wish she were a totally new character. nothing about her reminds me of Projectra or of Jeka Wyn'zrrrrr (whatever, i'm surprised they didn't call her Princess D'y). in addition to the TOTAL change in vocabulary and speech patterns, the only time she's used her illusion powers is in this issue, to show Ferro who she really is. she's thwacking her tail alot, but doesn't even bother to cloak herself in the illusion of her old form even though she doesn't want anyone to see her mutation. "boohoo! don't look at me!" duh-use your powers, princess! she's used them before to disguise herself as human. this needs to be explained to me. i wish DnA made themselves a little more acessible. i'd love to know their thinking on alot of these issues. looking forward to #25 and hopefully revealing text pages in the secret origins issue. Most of her armor is hidden by her costume. The grey that you see, apart from her face, hands, and cleavage is actually part of her costume, not her skin. Confusing? Yes. I still don't understand why they gave her a costume that matches her skin.

Reminds me of the old Batman TV show where Robin wore skin-colored tights.

Some random thoughts on the most recent issue:

-It seems that DnA ae trying to establish Sensor with super strength with the way she flung Ferro into Violet

-mistake? KK and Ferro shouldn't have sounded relieved when they heard the news that the Lost Legionnaires had returned; Brainiac 5 already sent a message to Steeple

-This is the third time that the Legion has had to fight among themselves because of possession since the reboot - Emerald Legion, Blight, any others?

-I think that everything that the Legionnaies hae been seeing are not just hallucinations, but are prognastications shared by Dreamer. Cub isn't really a grown adult, but he will be eventually; Star Boy really didn't become a black hole, but his powers will go haywire; Darkseid isn't really attacking, yet.

-I predict that Ferro's "harmonic healing" has somehow made him immune to Universo's control.

I agree with most of the positive comments on this thread.

Of course, I especially like the fact that Triad's
fighting skills are considered to be so formidable. (Even under hypnotic suggestion). This
is very consistent with her taking down Ra's previously. I am concerned that the writers need to address the fact that Lu cannot remain split for too long without becoming very ill. How long has she been under Universo's spell time-wise? Would she re-integrate when she needed too naturally despite the hypnosis?

I quite enjoyed this issue and the focus on 3 legionnaires (Sensor, KK and FL) was much welcomed. Before Sensor's transformation and with the KK and FL absent, I never got excited about them, but this issue changed that.

A few comments:

1.Why does Gear have the #10 on his costume?
2.Favourite art page: p.13 of this issue's fab 4
3.Kinetix looking a little Cheetah-ish on the bottom of p.17
4.Deliberate irony with Apparition to deliver the "SLAMM" that knocks KK out or just a cheap sucker punch from behind?
5.Kudos on KK's eyes: extremely well drawn. Finally, an artist who retains part of Val's Asian heritage (or am I wrong and he has no Oriental genes? I was always sketchy on his ethnicity.).

4 -- I'm unclear -- what's ironic about Apparition taking out KK?
5 -- I think that KK's partly asian heritage was added on at some point after they decided to model his looks after Bruce Lee (since he was all the rage at that time).

I certainly noticed it, but I wouldn't sign them up for the pride parade just yet -- right now if there's anything going on, DnA still have them closeted which to me, is nothing to celebrate. Hints and codes and implications have been the main diet for homosexuals for decades, so until they're out and proud, I don't see DnA saying it's "ok to be gay". I see them saying "nudge, nudge, wink wink" if anything.

And even if there was something, they'd still be playing it safe since Andy is in no position to be in a real physical relationship. Maybe it would make him more sympathetic or his physical detriment would be used to mirror the societal one that's present now -- we'll see...

Hand on shoulder could have been anything, I agree. A hint, a teaser, an indication, just a gesture from a friend...

What I find really quite peculiar in The Legion is that there are no couples now, except Jo & Tinya. Well, Thom and Nura, but that's really going nowhere at this point. No romances. No crushes. I mean, teenagers - you'd think they'd be making and breaking up all sorts of relationships. Maybe the U.P. puts something in the water to dampen the hormones. It just doesn't make sense.

We need a ROMANCE issue!!

Lord knows I'd like to see a gay character or two in the Legion-- but I kind of think it's more likely that the Ferro/KKid bond has more to do with Ferro's need to replace his dead twin brother (remember him?). Ferro hasn't been shown missing him, or thinking about him that I recall. But I'll bet he's felt lessened since Ingot's death.

Also, I'd think that Andy feels major gratitude for Val's selfless sacrifice of the decade-that-turned-out-to-be-a-few-months. Could lead to something else, sure.

You know who would make a good match for a gay Ferro? Mekt Ranzz...

...or maybe MEKT would think so and form an 'not-quite Fatel Attraction' to Ferro after another inevitable Ayla rejection scene.

I agree that that's a dynamic missing from the team, but so is most interpersonal interactions at this point. DnA have preserved Triad's feelings for M'onel and Cham's connection to Ayla and there may be something brewing between Shikari and Wildfire, but it's definitely taken a backseat to universe-saving.

We'll he considered Tri-Jitsu a challenge, but he mopped up Lu pretty quick. Which is as it should be.

He may have recognized Wildfire from the basic components of his costume. Ferro is a fashion designer, recall.

Imra will probably just wrest control of some of the Legionnaires thanks to some serendipitous distraction of Uni.

What I question however, is why Sensor was not more effective this issue? If Uni was making the Legionnairs think they were fighting dog soldiers, couldn't Sensor have jusst given them another vision, say that they were judging the Westminster dog show?

This was not how I interpreted Ferro's line on first reading. But going over it again, your interpretation certainly makes more sence.

I only ask because it might be possible that he was being detained on Titan because of the nature of his powers, not because he WAS a Titanian. Who better to imprison a mentalist than a race of mentalists?

EXCELLENT POINT! Has Uni referred to Imra as a relative at all yet in this story?

4 -- I'm unclear -- what's ironic about Apparition taking out KK?

Ironic in the sense that the Legion's most "non-contact" combatant takes out the most hand-to-hand combatant.

What was Darkseid's curse in the preboot? Something about the most innocent among them shall be the first to fall.... So, looks like Cub is the reboot Validus.

VIOLET shrinks when fighting "The Atom" in THE LEGION 12.

And SHIKARI is seen holding hands with WILDFIRE in a wonderful splash page in THE LEGION 1, so I don't think it's out of chracter for her to hug Sensor.

Plus that whole "teleportation" trick during the Legion Subterfuge Squad days was accomplished using her shrinking powers...

She did it against the "Atom" in that fight with the fake JLA.

Regarding the hug, Sensor seems really distraught in that panel where Shikari's supporting her -- it seems an overly dramatic way to show how dire their situation is. Was Batista just hamming it up or does Sensor's expression there seem appropriate to others?

Sensor's physiological changes might be part of what's making her so emotional, which could explain this scene as well.

I thought the scene between Sensor and Shikari WAS a tiny bit manufactured. On the other hand, Sensor has been through a hell of a lot. Maybe the hard shell she has developed just coulen't hold up there. I WAS surprised to see Shikari's reaction (the comforting embrace) but also pleased as well. I can see Kari playing the comforting role. Don't know why, but I can. She already has been playing counselor to Brainy, as well. An interesting evolution of her persona, and I think welcome. Also, a major difference from Dawny's coldness, which will only strengthen the differences between the two (I stand firmly in the camp that Shikari is NOT Dawny rebooted.)

What was far more interesting and emotional to me was Ferro's hand on Val's shoulder. Much as I am loath to disagree with Lash, I think that gesture is FAR more poignant as a gesture of friendship, rather than romantic love. Val stayed with him when he was injured, rather than leave him alone on Steeple. I think he loves Val very much at this point, but as a brother. I hope this friendship stays strong.

While deep down I agree 100% with what Jeffey said re: Val and Andy, I'll thank him and the rest of you for allowing me to continue to dwell in my little dream world!!!

I think that Ferro's hand on Val's shoulder was nothing more than Ferro urging Val--who looks like he's about to attack S&S--to show some restraint. Why Val is assuming this aggressive stance against 2 barely conscious strangers who are wearing Legion flight rings is what doesn't make sense to me...

I also found it odd that Shikari embraced Sensor in that scene. She's been characterized as a loner among her own people and an outsider among the Legion up until now. She armors up and shoots those spikes out the instant she feels threatened or uncomfortable. She's never struck me as the touchy/feely/huggy type, in fact, she's so standoffish, she hasn't even bothered to learn her teammates' names. Val or Andy putting the hug on Sensor would've made more sense to me. Shikari strikes me more as the "suck it up" type.

I think Shikari was labelled a loner amongst her people more for the fact that she has that independent warrior streak. Even when we first see her in "LL" she's flying around with others. I think she was a bit out of place with her own people, but feels like she fits in with the Legion, so I don't expect her to be a loner or stand-offish with her teammates.

In the opening scene on Titan, where Universo faces the arriving Legion, everybody seems to be there, including Chuck and Gear (are they or aren't they Legionnaires?).

One person missing is Shvaughn Erin - she isn't always around but I wonder is she's just off nursing her wounded ego after the Ra's escape fiasco, or will she be playing a part later?

Of course, Cub is missing too - although his parents are there - but he's not part of the team. Still, I have high hopes for him to play a part in saving the day.

Now you know who could really save the Legion from Universo? Who is able to resist all sorts of mind manipulation because of their "weaker intellects"? THE SUPER-PETS! Hold your applause, thank you.

So true, FC! Remember the Brain-Globes of Rambat! Remember the fake Luck Lords!

Who could defeat them other than the Super-Pets?
