Hi guys
As usual thanks to Nightcrawler - here are some scans of the latest cover.

Unusually for me, as this was a silhouette design, I also did a VERY rough color thumbnail of what I had in mind. Here it is [Smile]

 -

And here's the inked version...click on the thumbnail to see the larger version!

Click for fullsize image

Hope you like 'em!

Thanks Barry!

Ok, I know everybody's already said who they think each silhouette is, but here are my guesses -

In the front and on the ground, from left to right: Triplicate Girl, Saturn Girl, Ultra Boy, Chameleon, Lightning Lad, Cosmic Boy, Princess Projectra, Shrinking Violet/Atom Girl, Shadow Lass, Karate Kid, & Colossal Boy/Micro Lad.

Flying above SG's head is Chemical King [Smile] , next to him is Phantom Girl, below PG is Element Lad, above PG is Light Lass, with Timber Wolf just below her.

Above the flag is Star Boy.

Below the flag is Matter-Eater Lad [Smile] high in the distance, then Brainiac 5, below him Bouncing Boy [Smile] , to their right is Invisble Kid, with Dream Girl's legs being shown, and finally Sun Boy just above Cosmic Boy's head.

I won't speculate on who's who, but I like all of the new additions Nightcrawler suggested!

Very dramatic cover, especially in colour - but the b&w is a knock-out too. Just wondering if the choice of silhouettes has something to do with the silhouette roll call page in each issue.

Posted by Harbinger on :

I think this is my favourite cover so far, but it's a difficult choice given the preceding 11.

Love the rough draft - it's very eyecatching and spooky too.

The b&w is superb though, and am looking forward to seeing it on the shelves with the rest of issue 12 attached [Smile]

Great stuff! Thanks Baz!

Thanks Barry. It's beautiful.

Thanks guys! [Smile]

I can't give a definitive answer as to who is in the silhouettes for a month or two as I don't want to give anything away...and a GREAT deal happens in issues 10-12 so I don't want to ruin any surprises! [tease]

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

Yet more proof Barry's pencils/inks are just as good or better than the final colored version. I want this as a t-shirt!

Posted by Pov on :

I just wanted to add that this is further proof of Barry's talent-- that we can recognize his character designs from just their silhouettes and some random shadows!

The big complaint on team books has forever been only being able to recognize characters by their costumes and hair cut/color.

Just wanted to mention that. [Smile]

Great as always Barry. Thanks!

Love the 'thumbnail' version! [Yes]
Brilliant as always Barry! [Smile]

well is there something gonna happen to Dream Girl? I don't see her anywhere on the cover unless you can say that she took a haircut and would account her silhouette on the far left flying above Saturn Girl?

Posted by Caliente on :

I think Dream Girl is behind the flag pole, facing Cham.

Excellent stuff!

You know, the quality of the b&w work makes me want to see a whole story in that format. Could make for an interesting backup tale at least.

I can see it now. A renegade Ulu Vaak, from the monochromatic world of Lupra, steals the Legion's ability to see in color. The battle comes to a climax in the old suburb of Basin City when Vaak has to team with the Legion to beat Roark, known throughout the city as the Yellow Bastich.

I like that idea! [Big Grin]

I'd like to have 1 better than just pencilled artwork...I'd like colored pencils ala Michael Zulli's artwork in the Sandman: The Wake issues. I've never seen a publisher do that before or after those Sandman issues and Barry's pencils would definitely shine in that treatment.

Posted by Barry Kitson on :

Thanks Igee - you know I've never actually tried working in colored pencils - might be a fun experiment!

Posted by Igee The Mighty on :

Hi Barry...er...I meant that the colors are applied directly on your pencils without the benefit of inking. As I mentioned, I believe that's what they did for the Sandman: The Wake issues drawn by Michael Zulli. Your inked artwork looks great but I profess a strong preference to seeing your pencilled artwork (as seen in your thumbs for the covers) colored in that manner sans inker.

Hey!
Momma was a "good girl" and Daddy did "the right thing" and they were happily married (more or less) for many years.
Hmmmph.

I'm with you. I personally just love coloring a lot of artwork directly from the pencils and completely skipping the inks. Often you get so much more finesse out of pencils without somebody applying heavy blacks on delicate shading, texturing and crossahtching.

To explain- I quit coloring temporarily until I get a new monitor, I had to replace my old one and this one I'm using right now has lousy color so I don't dare try to do any computer coloring until I can see what something actually looks like on the web. It stinks but at least I can still surf.

Hi Igee - Sorry my bad! I thought you meant actually creating the whole page with colored pencils.
To color the standard pencils needs a REALLY sympathetic colorist so as the pencils don't get over powered - but it IS something I'd be interested to try sometime.
I actually tend to prefer less 'worked/molded' color generally and I think that's what coloring the pencil would probably call for.
More of a 'paint' than and airbrush style.

Hi YK - hope you get that new monitor soon! [Smile]

Me too, Barry. Me too.
Looks like I'll be buying my daughter one of those inexpensive Dell desktops for her birthday at the end of September and maybe she'll take pity on her old man and let me play on it sometimes. [Big Grin]

Know what though? I'll bet that if you wanted to create a few pages or even a whole book with colored pencils than there's not one of us that would dare complain. That's a wonderful idea.

I hadn't thought of it that way but I'll bet it would be incredibly fun for you to do and a treat for us to see. I'd buy a Barry Kitson's Colored Pencil Special Edition of The Legion of Suoerheroes. "You by-damn betcha!"

Ha ha
Sweet! You're a treasure.

Did you have fun with the gang in San Diego? I really really hope so. Despite my best efforts that darned old "real world" caused me to miss yet another con that I was dying to attend.

Whatever happened to that Dawnstar sketch? [Big Grin]

Posted by Barry Kitson on :

Sadly the real world (and LSH deadlines) meant I had to miss San Diego this year too - but NEXT YEAR FOR SURE! [Big Grin]

Posted by ferroboy on :

Then I guess you won't be in Boston, either. [Frown]

Posted by Barry Kitson on :

It's very unlikely this year - I am hoping to make perhaps one convention this season, but making sure I don't have to skip another LSH issue is my top priority!
[Smile]
I would definitely liek to visit Boston one day though! [Smile]

Hi Barry,

I've been following your career for a while and i have to say you did an excellent job with the JLA: YEAR ONE mini-series, but, alas, have not been keeping up with the current Legion incarnation.

This version has nothing that i need to refer back to - its a completely new era, a fresh start as the Legion enters the 31st century.

Keep up the fine work...your Timber Wolf is especially note-worthy.

One question though: i am not sure what the up-arrow on Light Lass's costume signifies. Maybe you could have put an enlarged feather outline diagonal-wise. She underwent a similar change of emblem in ADVENTURE, maybe it will happen here, too.

Cheers,

Brian

Oh no! I know how much the crew was looking forward to some special Barry time. We see Mark Waid everywhere (he he) but those Barry Kitson times are special.
Ok, I can forgive you for not being there (mainly because I wasn't there either) but the rest of LW that made such an effort to make the coast-to-coast run might be a little tougher crowd.

You might have to draw extra specially well for the rest of the year to make it up to them. [Big Grin]

Barry,

Did you have influence for this cover from past issues? I know that is has been discussed in the Early Solit for LSH #12 - Spoilers? thread, but not looking for content answers here, just cover influence.

From my art collection:
 -

This has been mentioned as a possible influence. Was it?

Then again if you can't answer now.... totally understandable.

Thanks in Advance!

Chad

(Yes that Chad) [Wink]

Hi guys
It wasn't a conscious influence - I'd forgotten that great image - but they would make cool companion pieces wouldn't they! [Smile]

Posted by Ultra Boy on :

SouthtownKid,

Yes indeed it is the original and it is positively beautiful in person. I was fortunate enough to stumble upon my grail and it has been part of my collection for the past 3 years, 6 months, & 23 days. But then again who is counting. [Razz]

That does bring up an interesting point though... Does anyone have, or have seen any other Legion cover paintings? Others would be way cool to see in person.

Curiosity note?????? - - - -

Why does DC have the cover to #11 posted as the cover image for #12 also on their website?? Is the cover a leak they wanted to keep secret?? HHmmmmm?

LLLater!

Chad

PS - And yes Barry those would be amazing together wouldn't they!

Cool stuff-
Enjoyed looking at you web site too Barry- Thanks for sharing.

Posted by Barry Kitson on :

Thanks - sorry I've not had time to update the website as much as I'd like...but once we get past #14.... [Big Grin]

There is a secret reason why the covers to #11 and #12 are the same on the DC website...there may well be a big announcement...or if the ptb decide it best you may have to wait until all is revealed when #11 hits the stands! It's all good stuff! [Smile]

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

What could this possibly be? Unless this isn't really the cover to #12? Maybe the real cover doesn't have silhouettes, and so it would contain spoilers?

This is exciting!

Huh? Barry arrived in the night with his regular bi-weekly tease. He's a master of those isn't he.

And shucks I missed him again.

yeah Barry! he knows what get's us going on this board. Let the speculation begin!

Posted by Nightcrawler on :

Wow. So my "guesses" may just be on the money!

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

No doubt DC is trying to decide whether it should announce the return of Matter-Eater Lad to the DCU or wait until #11 when all is revealed!

Posted by RTVU2 on :

Nah, it's no the return of MEL. It's the return of Lester! [Smile]

Posted by Nightcrawler on :

Isn't Calamity King due to reappear by #11?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

#13, of course!

Well, that *would* explain why the Legion's coffers are full!

But I don't know why DC would announce Lester's return. Unlike Matter-Eater Lad, who is arguably the Legionnaire most known outside Legion fandom!

Posted by RTVU2 on :

Unless Lester and MEL are now one and the same!

Arrgghhh. That is the last time I ask a question like that. Ok. . . maybe not the last but....
Really thought it might have just been a DC webmaster error. [Smile]

The curiosity is now officially killing me.

Wow, Barry you are a bigger tease than that girl I used to date in high school. But then again, I have enjoyed both of you so far. [Razz]

Can't wait for the offical announcement on this stuff, and Barry's explanations to go with them!

LLLater!

Barry - first of all, just let you know that I am not that demanding....just worried too much about Dream Girl's fate..that's all. I love her ever since when she became a Legion leader and still think she has a lot of potential to be shown here in the Legion lore. She is one of my favorite legionnaire and I was so happy to see her in this newest version of Legion than she was a "flaky" one before DnA era. Here is my offer of apology to you.

If Dreamy had really been killed, i don't think Barry would have a grin on his face...

Posted by superboymddjr on :

Legion - ah...did not think about that one hmmm..but still, his message is cryptic at best [Smile] oh boy...maybe you're right and I hope that she turns out to be alive after the fiasco with Terra Firma's over. *finger crossing*

Posted by Tamper Lad on :

My thoughts exactly LAM, Barry wouldn't be that cruel Superboymddr. Wouldn't be smiling if he never got to draw her again. I'm with you I think that's her near PG's leg. I actually though it was dreamy all this time but someone said something about the figure having short hair.

Look at the body shape. She's got slender arms and her shoulder's are narrower and less muscular than the Ayla. If you look at the forearms, you can see that they actually look bigger than her biceps suggesting those gauntlets Dreamy wears.

Or it could be Popeye the Sailor Lass joining in issue 12.

Posted by superboymddjr on :

hmm I ID her as Light Lass....funny thing is that I also ID Atom Girl between Princess Projectra and Shadow Lass...makes me think if it is Atom Girl or not. If it is not her, then who s that person?

Posted by superboymddjr on :

ah sorry I looked at the wrong shadow...Alya is upper there..so I ID the wrong one....the figure that Tamper Lad you mentioned is that I could not ID her at all. Maybe you're right - can be Dream Girl with a short haircut. But the mystery is - is there an Atom Girl or something else different - a female legionniare we have not seen yet?

Posted by legionadventureman on :

Or perhaps it is Mysa (wearing the same red 'do as she did in her ADVENTURE appearences).... [Yes]
