I refuse to like something because I as a gay man am supposed to like it (Please make a note of it, Lady Gaga's song "Born this Way").

We'll see how this goes... I hope I don't end up hating this guy...

I just thought it was interesting.

Well, at least he's not a satire of Superman or Batman.

I'm surprised the Justice League doesn't consist of Supes, Bats, Captain Atom, Blue Beetle (or The Question, I guess), Captain Marvel, Spysmasher, Apollo and Midnighter.

Oh it is that, for sure. This could either be really cool or really not cool... we shall soon see which it is to be!

Flamboyance is hard to pull off in fictional characters. I remain cautiously optimistic.

I love Wiccan and Hulkling in Young Avengers just because they are portrayed as so ordinary.

Lobdell dropped the ball with Starfire... fingers crossed for this guy.

Uh oh. I need to go read me some more Gravity Kid/Power Boy or Wiccan/Hulkling scenes to get that image out of my mind...

Which boy will Bunker try to mack on first?

If it was me, I'd pick Roy Harper, but he's too busy banging Starfire these days over in RED HOOD & THE OUTLAWS to re-explore what he did to pay for all that China cat...

I actually liked Extrano when I was a kid ....

talk about *oppression*, that's how starved I was for gay characters.

I still love Northstar despite how hard they have tried to mess him up. He's been a lot of not so great gay stereotypes ... women hating, criminal, and elf ... an elf yes, and i think was dying of AIDS, and then the elves carried him off to elf land.

he's like the Donna Troy of Marvel!

Now he's still cranky but, he has a bf, and teaches part time at Xavier's. (this seems more like the stereotype that i fit ... [shrug] )

I think it's really hard to do a gay character who just *happens* to fit a stereotype well. Glee manages to, and deal with those characters pretty well but, they have so many gay people and writers etc. associated with that series.

I still think it's kinda soon to be depicting gays that fulfill stereotypes and have it be obvious they're not being made fun of.

... just my 2 cents.

awwwwwwwww.

Now THAT is gay done right.

And they didn't even include gratuitous shirtless scenes!

YOUNG AVENGERS should have been published back when I was a kid. Wiccan and Hulkling have always been portrayed as a normal couple-- I do admit to being surprised when they did this scene of them going to bed together, but as you said, there was nothing at all gratuitious about it.

I wish YA wasn't published so sporadically, but IMO it is the best comic being published and is always worth the wait.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Exactly. That scene above could have used a guy and a girl, or two girls, and nothing would change. Plus, there is no reason for anyone to be outraged by it.

This (plus the Power Boy-Gravity Kid relationship) are just wonderful for showing people that a homosexual relationship can be just as "normal" and HAPPY as any hetero one.

Hearing Bunker’s backstory gave me something to think about because it was different and upbeat. But, my brother’s gay, and he was turned off by the idea. “Why do we HAVE to have stereotypes?” Then I asked how he would’ve felt if there was a character who was totally flamboyant but heterosexual. Response was the same. So I ask why does he have to be a flamboyant gay teen? Why can’t he just be gay? The only way the writers are going to really break boundaries is by not making a big deal about race, gender, religion, or orientation. I mean, it’s not like any of it should matter in the long run. The staff’s heart is in the right place, but, this just feels off to me.

Wait a minute, he's a flamboyant, gay, latino, teen super hero?

10 years ago, I was an African-American woman with one arm.

Dang those reboots!

Well, I'm not gay myself, but just to offer an opinion or two:

Plenty of superheroes that we are expected to accept as straight are pretty damn flamboyant.

I don't think the problem is that a gay dude is flamboyant. The problem is that if he's the only gay dude in continuity, he's expected to sum up the behaviors and attitudes of every gay reader/fan there is. And that's a problem, because obviously all LGBT folks don't behave the same way.

So the obvious solution is for there to be more than one gay protagonist in continuity, and for them not to all have interchangeable powers, origins, appearances, and mannerisms.

Well said, cleome! Here's to more WELL-WRITTEN gay superheroes!

scans_daily posted some pages if you're interested. The reaction over there seems pretty positive.

Yep.

And to Power Boy/Gravity Kid not being used as cannon fodder in some future Big Event. :/

(And I still want to see more Ayla/Vi. I'm very old school that way. [Big Grin]

Indeed. I have to say I fear for their lives when 'Legend of the final infinite identity crisis of the blackest millenium day' comes out. [Razz]

Oh, by the way, Thanks for the link. The other pages make the character somewhat less offensive than the one posted here. Somewhat.

I agree, he hardly seems over the top here. (And I love how apparently he's strong enough to almost squish Tim in a hug).

He reminds me of the cartoon version of Starfire. (That's not a criticism.) They need to team up!

OK after *finally* reading TT 3 and 4, I must say BUNKER seems quite j'adorable. When he hugged Robin, it seemed so genuine... and I gazed at that butt-shot of him staring at Skitter's cocoon for a full 2 minutes!

DEFINITELY M.H.S.W!

Bunker's gotta be the only Titan to genuinely have no emotional baggage.

What does MHSW stand for? [Smile]

Bunker befriending Solstice was really cute.

Love the lack of emo baggage!

I like Bunker a lot! I like both the new kids, actually. Whoever thought I'd see the day? Usually I'd be cantankerous about all the "missed Titans" they could have put in instead.

I really love his dynamic with pretty much everybody. Let's find him a man next!

*raises hand

Er, to help find Bunker a man, I mean!
