Both TD and Ultra-Matt have recently received fake e-mails, allegedly from me, with attachments. They are NOT from me-- and I'm afraid the attachments could carry worms or viruses.

I don't know why this is happening, but I believe TD and Beagz called it "spoofing".

Just a warning! I won't send anyone any attchments; and if I do I'll PM you here about it first!

I'm getting returned mail errors. If someone's using the board to send people e-mails with viruses attached, I may turn off the e-mail feature here. At least for awhile.

I'm also getting returned mail errors on stuff I've never sent.

Hmmm...I'm going to turn off the e-mail feature. If you guys need to communicate with each other here, use the PMs. I'll probably turn it back on later.

Your welcome you little stud!!!!!

Gary, the consideration is welcome, but this almost certainly has nothing to do with the UBB software, especially not its indirect e-mailing facility. Turning off e-mail isn't going to solve matters.

Some people who have Lash in their address book are going to have to run an antiviral program, because a worm is hijacking that address book. (There's an on-line scanner at mcafee.com.)

Probably it's Outlook Express -- in fact, it's nearly always that, these days -- which is made to do the misbehaving.

Apart from that, as with Scott's tennis elbow, et al., some people are now incommunicado, as they've turned off PMs.

Please turn e-mail back on as soon as possible. I, for one, am being hurt by this. I'm already having a hard time corraling the files from LegionPics, few are cooperating, and this is just making it worse.

Thanks for the warnings, guys.

There you go Grey. The e-mail link is back.

Sorry about that.

I just got an e-mail from admin here at Legion World-- the message said simply: Your File is Attached. I deleted it immedietely. I'm 99.9% sure it was fake.

Posted by Nightcrawler on :

It was. Sorry. It sounds like Legion World's e-mail is affected. How do I clean it? I assume it's here on PowWeb. Grey any ideas on how to clean it?

I have the latest McAffee installed on my computer and have checked for viruses. Nada.

Remember peeps--

DON'T open attachments! ESPECIALLY ones from e-mail addresses that look like mine.

And you know ANY e-mail from me is going to say more than something stupid like "Your file is attached".

I'd almost certainly toss in some sexual innuendo and a bad pun.

Same here. And I haven't received any of the bouncing e-mails or admin mails with attachments.

Even though the infected mail looks like it came from our admin address doesn't mean it came from LW. All it takes is receiving the file from anyone to attach itself to your address book. And you don't even have to have the LW admin address (or any other) saved in your address book now the way Outlook and Outlook Express operates. The newer versions have this 'nifty' feature where it remembers addresses that you have used or received e-mail from and it does an auto-fill. I believe this comes from a kind of temporary address book that you don't have to create yourself. I'm not sure if there is a way to turn off this feature but maybe Grey or SoM know.

Just to show my ignorance. Is AOL afected by this. They keep telling me my email is safe and all, protected by virus checkers and stuff. I also have a firewall, virus checker et al on my own PC but am never quite sure if its working properly.

also am i right in thinking that opening the email is not the problem but it is any attachment?

I only use Yahoo Mail. Any idea if that is safe from this virus?

Posted by MLLASH on :

It's my Yahoo acct. that's getting all the returned mails and got the fake LW-admin one.

Attachments are the problem child here. If you open ANY attached file where you don't know what is coming in advance, AND exactly what it is, you're taking a risk of virus/worm infection.

Even if it's somebody you know well who sent the attached file, and you didn't KNOW it was coming, be cautious -- for that person could unknowingly have a virus or worm -- and e-mail them first to confirm that they meant to send it, and what it is.

This can affect you whether it's plain POP e-mail (Outlook Express, Netscape, Eudora, Pegasus), Web-based e-mail (Yahoo! or other sites), or AOL. Don't download OR open ANY attachment you don't know about in advance.

I know it's a pain, but that's the only way e-mail can infect you. You can't trust ANY unsolicited attached files, period, no matter what they're named.

Scott is right about Outlook Express now "helping" you with autofill, not only with the address book, but also with the "history list." You can and should turn off its use of autofill from either or both sources. Look for an "Options" menu.

(I don't have the latest Outlook Express -- I won't touch it for actual e-mail -- or I'd tell you where ...)

It's a "spoofer" worm that is doing this. Lash is affected because his addy is in others' address books who DO have the worm running. (WebTV doesn't accept or run files, so it's about the only thing that's essentially immune from the viruses.)

The LW.net addy is involved because whoever has the worm got e-mail from the LW admins at some point. UBB itself won't run such a worm -- different animals and cyber-habitats.

You really can't do much beyond running a good antiviral program -- but everyone using LW.net needs to do it!

One other precaution, to avoid accidental virus problems:

~ In any stand-alone e-mail program, turn OFF your "preview pane," where an e-mail can be seen fully formatted if you click on its line in a listing of incoming mail. This can activate some viruses, with some mail programs again being "helpful" by running an attached file if you use the preview pane ... yikes!

~ In any Web e-mail account, such as Yahoo! Mail, activate the option to prevent "HTML graphics" from displaying in mail that you view. It prevents both infested graphics and spammers' "Web beacons" from displaying. You can turn this back on for any individual message if it's from a legit source.

(Some .JPG graphics in e-mail messages and on Webpages, especially at sex sites, may carry virus material, but they can't run it. A good antiviral program, kept updated and scanning all that comes in, will flag that infestation as well. The only response that works, on the Web or e-mail, is to simply DELETE what's flagged.)

I didn't open the attachment. (I know that much)

1) I was wondering if anyone recognizes the address I supposedly sent something to

2) I am assuming that if I get an email with the virus and open it up it would infect the computer I am on (work or school). Would it effect my hotmail account so that if I delete the infected email (even if I accidently infected the computer I was on) it would still corrupt my Hotmail account so that it would infect other computers that I sign on to?

I am also a little confused as to these new viruses. Am I correct in that they can infect your computer even just by viewing an email without opening the attachment?

I hope not!!!!

Grey stated that attachments were the problem child.

If just VEIWING an e-mail can send worms/viruses, would we be looking at the end of the internet...?

Scary.

Posted by Pov on :

Simply receiving an infected e-mail will NOT infect your computer per se.

There is a known issue with MicroSoft's Outlook Express, wherein bug writers can exploit its preview function to run code without actually opening the infected attachment. If you're using OE, make sure all your security patches are installed.

Recently I kept getting e-mails from "Newcru" in my yahoo account that I knew were fake, mainly because Cru is rarely here anymore and there was no subject in the subject line, so this whatever it is thing may be acting up again.

I'm shocked this evil computer monster has not metamorphed into an LMB villain.

I demand someone use one of their alts that are lying around unused and create it!

(Er, not that we haven't had 12,222,222,222, Computo villains before).

I'm currently seeking a grant in order to give my alts the training they'll need in order to fulfill Cobalt Kid's above request.

Right now, we're aiming to get the alts to Nigeria in time for spring semester. Coach is okay, though I'm sure they wouldn't object to First Class if it was offered.

Anyway, you all know where my inbox is, so get cracking. Live the dream, LMB! Live the dream!

Quis, do you really want your email so visible here?

I want someone to create a virus that attaches to incoming virus', does nothing except follow them back to their points of origin, and then flashfry the offenders computer, but only after sounding bells and whistles to attract attention, showing three minutes of beastality porn with big yellow letters flashing onscreen saying "this is what this user watches and likes" to make sure that they are thoroughly embarrased before their computer is fried.

Its not much, but its what I want.
