I'm excited about this. I loved the Geoff Johns origin-of-Power Girl story arc in JSA Classified # 1-4 (also drawn by Amanda Conner.)

I [Love] -LOVED- [Love] JSA:C 1-4... the only arc of that title I ever bought. With Amanda back and GrayPal on board, this is a must-buy for me!

I'll buy this for the Amanda Conner art for sure. Everything else I'll proceed with caution and no expectations...

Maybe this can end up being the real "Supergirl" comic? In fact, why not kill the current Supergirl in "Final Crisis" and have PG carry on her "legacy"? It would certainly be the most merciful thing to do with that train wreck.

It has been added to my pull already.

I can't imagine a better creative team!

I didn't see any release date in that article.

Anybody know when this is supposed to arrive in stores?

I'm assuming there's no date at the moment, and that it probably won't launch until after Final Crisis is over.

For everyone awaiting Power Girl's book, here's the first of a series of fanfics I'll be posting at my blog. It's the first step in my attempt to create a Marvel analog to DC's Pre-Crisis Earth-2 universe. I hope non-Marvel readers will give it a try, too, as I'm endeavoring to make it accessible to everybody, just as I do with my Imperial Guard fanfics.

Comments are welcome, but please post them in the blog.

So, without further ado...don't call her Ms. Marvel, she's MARVEL WOMAN!!

Power Girl # 1 came out today.

Good villain for the first arc.

Click Here For A SpoilerThe Ultra-Humanite.

Amanda's art is as charming as ever.

GrayPal's script thankfully gives as much attention to characterization as action and is refreshingly "compressed."

More thoughts to come after re-readings.

Posted by MLLASH on :

Got it, just read it.

Amanda's artwork is fab.

Ineresting they are bringing back the Karen Starr thing.

Posted by Stealth on :

More compressed delights in the second issue: PG and UH go mano-a-mano, the supporting cast get some nice unobstrusive time in the spotlight, Amanda beautifully draws the JSA for two pages, Wildcat tells the rest of the JSA not to worry about PG, and we get a new origin for UH.

I wish I could say I'm surprised that such a good book has so little buzz, but the premature announcement (to say nothing of the grotesque Adam Hughes variant covers) did it no favors.

Posted by rouge on :

#2 was probably my last issue. Did we really need to completely redo the Ultra-Humanite's origin? And doesn't removing him from the Golden Age, screw up a lot of continuity? I just didn't see the problem with the older story. On top of that, the main story itself was pretty bland.

Here's a funny quote from the review thread on the CBR Power Girl Discussion:

quote:
"I wish people would stop pointing out all the many ways this issue sucked...like how I do wish the white bread (even the African-American woman is decidedly white bread) cast would die, or how Power Girl didn't really do anything of note, or how Ultra-Humanite's really kind of a stupid, whiny, short-sighted moron...and just let me enjoy the two pages of Power Girl in a deathtrap.

Look, I know the book's boring. I didn't go to my comic shop yesterday to get Power Girl, I went to get Empowered, but it was delayed a week...and having two really nice pages of Peej strapped into an uber-trap was a really nice apology from the universe for messing up my day. Just...give me this.

Can we put talks about how boring and tedious this comic is, lacking one-twentieth the flair or eccentric, fun characters of Empowered, until next month, when I actually have Emp's fifth volume to read? Then I'll be ready to go into excruciating detail about how I completely agree that too many pages were wasted on UH's fake backstory and throw in my theory that such waste is proof that...much like Peaty's non-use of Liberty Belle in JSA Classified #34...no one at DC has the foggiest idea how to write Peej as anything but a one-dimensional blow up doll who espouses trite, feminist platitudes, despite the fact that her history means she should be closer to being like Majestic's daughter, Savant, than a twenty-something teenage Supergirl.

AURGH!

I just want to ignore the bad for one issue and breath in the sweet, sweet wonder of a super-powered blond in a deathtrap. Is that too much to ask?"

Posted by Stealth on :

I didn't enjoy the latest issues as much as the previous ones. The only way I can explain it is that the first two were Silver Age-y in a good way, but the third is Silver Age-y in a bad way. Hopefully the evil-alien-party-girls arc will be more satisfying overall.

Posted by rickshaw1 on :

I liked it. I liked that silver-agey feel to the book. It harkens back to when comics were actually FUN to read and not just narcissistic grim and gritty melodrama's.

Posted by KryptonKid on :

Wow. Did it really take over a year from the first issue cover being finished to its release?

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

So I finally caught up with #2 and #3. And I'll try to be as nice as possible, but I must be honest. These were terrible. Not "kinda terrible". This were freaking terrible.

The one good thing: Amanda Conner's art. Its terrific; in fact, it saved the two issues in so many ways because a bad artist would have made this garbage.

Graypal have done such a fantastic job on Jonah Hex, Hawkman and several other titles over the years. But they've shown that at times, they can also deliver some pretty low grade stuff--I think 'Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters' falls into this category although I tried my damnest to love it. But Power Girl is the worst of the bunch.

In fact, I'll give you a little summary of my comic book reading experience: In the last two weeks, I've read 87 comic books by several different comic book companies; part of the reason was so I can review them on LW as a little experiment for myself. Of the entire 87, including several I only browse through because their quality is so low, the worst two are Mighty Avengers (I'll get to that next) and Power Girl, the latter being the absolute worst.

Why is it so bad, you ask?

First, what in the hell did they think they were doing with the Ultra-Humanite's origin? Its one of the best in comics, and he's one of the great super-villains of all time, going all the way back to the earlist issues of Action Comics. That should be celebrated. Instead, they give him the corniest, crappiest origin this side of the Gibbon. He's a freaking Nazi who kidnaps people and beasts and places his brain in their bodies. He is one of the original great horrors in comics. What utter crap to do this!

Second...ripping Manhattan into the sky as an island? That's akin to the legendary Marvel Team-Up issue where Hercules drags it back into the bay. Its so freaking stupid it makes me want to laugh--or cry.

Third: do we really need to invoke 9/11 and have people diving off of the building to their deaths...and have it happen so casually? At no point did that sequence help the story at all; it was done so much in passing that it didn't even invoke the slightest bit of emotion or poignancy to the story. Except of course that such a thing really happened and not that long ago. Pretty poorly done, but hey, this is the modern DC Comics. Still, I expect better from Jimmy Palmiotti, a native of Brooklyn.

And lastly, Power Girl is basically shown to be the stereotype of herself she's always been with no added depth after three entire issues. She hasn't gained an iota of layering. Her story is like a Michael Bay film with ass-shot, breast-shot and other gratuitous pose after one another, complete with punching and explosions.

I have to say it clearly one more time: these is the worst DC Comic Books that I read in the last two months, and I've almost read them all.

Posted by Stealth on :

Well, Cobie, I respect your opinion even though I disagree with it, just as you respect that I despise Blackest Night while you think it's a qualified success so far.

I think comparing this book to a Michael Bay movie is a bit harsh. A Joel Silver or Don Simpson movie, maybe -- over-the-top but self-aware.

And I do think that there have been attempts at making Power Girl a deeper character, but it is, after all, only the first three issues.

Re: The Ultra-Humanite's new origin, I must confess I don't have emotional investment in too many characters from the DC Universe. The way I see it, original incarnation of the Ultra-Humanite took center stage in several memorable stories, but I think it was taken as far as it could go.

I agree that the 9/11 reference was tasteless, but I guess I'm too jaded about the entertainment industry's frequent exploitation of real-life human tragedy to let it bother me too much.

Finally, as long as we're tracking the ups and downs of GrayPal, I think their absolute worst was Battle For Bludhaven, which I found in the quarter bin yet still kick myself for wasting even a tiny amount of money on.

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

Definitely respect your opinion! [Smile]

And I forgot about Battle for Bludhaven--I must have tried to dislodge it permanently from my memory. I agree, that was the worst ever by Graypal. Maybe the worst DC story of the decade (besides Countdown of course).

Posted by Blacula on :

You know I love DC, Cobie but I think I love reading you tear them a new one even more! [LOL] That review was great!

I'm sorry to hear you didn't enjoy this book but I'm also not really surprised. Despite being a huge fan of Amanda Conner's art, the unfavourable Hit/Miss ratio of GrayPal's writing led me to leave this one on the shelf.

And after reading your negative review, as well as many others, I'm glad I did. It sounds awful.

Posted by Stealth on :

Okay, even I'M not going to try to defend the latest issue, an obvious last-minute fill-in of the most horrific sort, albeit by the regular creative team.

No solicit for November, always a bad sign.

Posted by Fat Cramer on :

It sounds so bad, I almost want to read it!

What a shame the series has turned out to be a bomb. Like Blacula, I love Amanda Conner's art, but am very leery of Power Girl stories. There just doesn't seem to be enough to distinguish her apart from the outrageously big boobs. She does need depth to her character. It's a pity, since Power Girl is probably now a bit toxic to DC - how does she recover from this? Rebuild through team stories and try a different approach in a few years?

Posted by Stealth on :

Let's face it -- Power Girl was never the same after her best friend, the Earth-2 Huntress (the REAL Huntress) was killed off in Crisis on Infinite Earths.

Posted by rickshaw1 on :

Hmmm. Okay, maybe its just me. I liked the book. From the guest appearance by the guys from Big Bang Theory to the "supervillain" to the personal time given to Karen, it was all fun.

I have to say that since the late eighties, comics haven't been as much fun to me. I get so very tired of each young turk writer trying to outcool every other young turk writer with grim "we are tearing the character down to build it up. There are gonna be some tough times ahead for "x"!" storylines.

Its not even a grim and gritty feel anymore. Its just Bleak in comicland. There seems to be little genuine joy to it. Thats why Firestorm was so much freakin' fun. The charcter enjoyed being a superhero. I don't want the "want it would be like if there were superhero's in real life" storylines. Real life is boring and depressing as hell most of the time.

I read comics for the fun and wonder of it. A chance to have a little lighthearted fun. Thats what the original legion was like for me, and i started in the early part of the grell run. Somewhere that was lost in the shuffle. Seems like everyone wanted there hobby to be respected, and figured the only way to do that was to go realistic.

well, PG is fun. It is gonna have all those moments, but hopefully wont make me want to shove a poker into my brain from depression. I like that its lighthearted and has moments of joy. Don't we all want that in life?

Whats depressing is that readers are seeming to categorically dislike it in favor of the same old same old. Given this I don't see a long life for the book, and that is a real shame.

I just think the re-imagining of UH pales when compared to the original. And didn't we just see an inferred UH origin in the Booster Gold "Time Breakers" arc? A suspicious albino gorilla cub(?) was taken by Per Degaton, I believe...? [Hmmm?]

I was okay with the plot mechanics of hoisting Long Island, actually; I've got to believe anyone smart enough to do so would have thought out how to keep it all together. The release and descent, however... [shrug]

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

I desperately want to like this title, but my above review explains how I feel. I read something 70 titles every month, and Power Girl was nominated for single worst one of them in July and August. And that includes a hell of a lot of not so great ones.

Since Crisis on Infinite Earths, its been awful hard to take Power Girl seriously, despite several creators really trying to make an honest go of it. This title pushes things back in the other direction. At a time when Supergirl is back and gaining more fans by the minute, Power Girl fans would certainly hope PG could carve out her own place in the DCU before possibly languishing in obscurity (or worse--lets not forget this is the modern era DC).

The Ultra-Humanite thing is just plan poor. Its "fire the writers off the title poor".

I just read 2-4...

While the fact that I let the issues pile up in my pull-sack (heh!) surely speaks that issue 1 didn't blow me away, I like the book better than some here.

Karen's adorable.

I'll agree with Cobie about this-- without the truly mesmerizing art of Amanda Connor, I would likely be close to dropping the book. And yeah, the rebooted origin for Ultra-Humanite didn't cut it with me, either.

I really wanted to like the new issue as much as I liked the first two issues, but I just couldn't. The story's all over the place, the jokes fall flat, and Amanda's art isn't up to her usual standards (I think that last one holds true for last issue as well, and makes me wonder if she's better off not doing a monthly.)

OK, I read 5-7 in one sitting.

I've come to the conclusion that this book is pure fluff.

I've also decided I don't mind that. Fluffy can be fun. And fluff drawn by Amanda Connor? Hecks yeah!! I'm sticking with it for now. It will be nice to have some fluff to read amid all the zombies rising and stuff.

I was especially tickled by her latest foe/potential love interest/idiot in # 7. Some weird cross between Hercules and Thundra.

I was nowhere near death, but I did enjoy finally reading about a character I've only seen mentioned. I always thought she had some potential, just from brief character bios I've read here and there.

Her 'rescue' from decades-long limbo reminds me of that slate of brought-from-the-golden (and even silver and bronze!)-age villains used in HAWKMAN before that title became HAWKGIRL and was cancelled.

What are *they* up to these days?

Posted by doublechinner on :

The first Vartox issue was incredibly amusing, between Vartox and the Blue Snowman, what a hoot! I'm not sure it illuminates much about PG's character, though. I mean, has there been anything surprising, interesting or revealing about her behavior so far? It just seems too shallow, somehow. Aside from a hint of nice interraction with Dr. Midnite, there were really no interesting character bits for PG, just the typical anger/outrage straight-man routine.

Posted by rickshaw1 on :

But, whats wrong with that? Seriously. Every once in a while, its nice to read a book that's just pure fun, that isn't a "shocking reveal" every issue or so.

I think there was something nice and personal that no one really seems to get. PG was choosing to hang out with the Doc. Makes you wonder if nothing else.

Like Lash said, its very nice, fun, lighthearted fluff. Baywatch was about as serious a tv show as a clowns flower button, but it was fun for people to watch. Xena...pure escapism. Sometimes, ya just sit back and let the waves of enjoyment wash over you. Thats what I'm doing, anyway.

I like this book!

It's just a fun title. GrayPalConner give us a real person in Karen Starr. The adventures are just that- adventures, not melodramatic save the universe situations. It reminds me of why I liked comic books in the first place. Whether it's an alien gigolo or a brain transferring ape, it's just off the wall, crazy comic book fun.

8 was my favorite yet I think. I could really relate to Kara getting that 1 minute of sleep in before her alarm went off. Valtrox of Valereon or whoever... I wouldn't mind him being a regular castmember. Especially fun was his formal dinnerwear!!

7-8 were a welcome break from the Darkest Night stuff everywhere else in the DCU.

I really enjoy this title as well. PG is a great character and I'm so glad she's finally getting the respect she's due.

Posted by Mystery Lad on :

I hope readers are aware that Vartox and Blue Snowman are quite 'old' characters, and have been around since the 1970's and 40's, respectively.

#9-- What is up with the weapon Satana has? Seems like a bit of a reach, to me...

I love that Gray and Palmiotti are using a character from their great HAWKMAN run here. I kind of hope that a couple of the animal men turn on their mistress and befriend PG, but that might be too much like WW and her white ape pals.

This title has a great mood or tone. It's a distinctive reading experience that sets apart from almost all other books on the stand (DC or Marvel, anyway).

The Karen Starr portions of the title have yet to really capture my interest, though.

Posted by MLLASH on :

When did the Winnick backlash begin?

I remember quite liking his run on OUTSIDERS, even though I didn't like the miniseries that led to its birth (which, IIRC was mostly mandated by DC's PTB).

I think I read part of his run on GREEN ARROW... I remember a VERY SWEET STORY featuring current Speedy and Connor Hawke Green Arrow.

His EXILES ruled.

When did he become a comics pariah on the level of John Byrne? Just curious...

Posted by rickshaw1 on :

Its been building. For me it started with his GL run. Then he moved over to GA and I had to drop it. The he ruined Outsiders and the nightwing character in it, then he got hold of Batman (I dropped it after 3 decades) and then he got this last version of titans off to a craptacular start.

But, thats just me. You'd have to ask others why they don't like his writing. And thats all I don't like. I don't know the man, just the writing I don't care for.

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

Hm, I also used to like Judd's work. His early Outsider and Green Arrow runs were good and his Green Lantern was good too.

...but...

His Batman run was so awful it was probably the worst Batman run in 50 years. And his bringing back Jason Todd as the Red Hood is just so ridiculously stupid, I consider it probably DC's poorest decision in the last 10 years and well, DC this past decade has been the pits of the entire indusry.

His Outsiders and Green Arrow declined in quality but they weren't horrible. Rather, it was his political miniseries (forget what it was called) that was just pure awfulness.

I feel like I've blocked out a lot of Winnick's stories from the past few years. Eventually his name came to be synonymous with shit.

Posted by Sarcasm Kid on :

True.

Posted by Blacula on :

I think there are two camps of people who don't like Judd Winick's writing -

1. Those that hate what they perceive as his forcing a liberal agenda into their comic books.

2. Those that just do not like his writing.

I am firmly in the latter camp. And I am very liberal.

I actually like some of his ideas - creating a HIV+ hero was a brave step and gives Mia a more interesting angle than she ever had before - but his total aversion to the previously established characterisation and history of his characters, his over-reliance on shock tactics in his stories and the fact that nearly all his character have that same quippy, MTV personality 'voice' make him a writer I cannot stand.

I've never read his non-DC work (though I've heard Exiles and Barry Ween are good) but surely his time at this company has been a disaster.

Rather than being a 'creative' writer, I consider him a very 'destructive' one. Has he ever left a DC property in better shape after he left it than before he arrived?

Batman : As CK said, this was awful and his Superboy-punched-a-cosmic-wall-and-that-revived-me return of Jason Todd is without a doubt the worst Batman plot development in a decade.

Graduation Day : THE worst Titans story ever! And THAT is saying something.

Titans : Followed immediately by this one.

Shazam : What a clusterf*** this property is now. Thanks Judd.

Green Arrow : After the great Smith and Meltzer runs on this book I'm surprised anyone could call Judd's work here 'good'. 'Adequate' maybe. And that was only in the beginning. It soon devolved into the sort of lazy, mischaracterized dirge he always writes.

DCU: Decisions : Did ANYONE read this? If not, lucky you.

I've never read his Green Lantern or Outsiders though and he had fairly long runs with them, so I guess he might've done OK there. Though didn't both titles get cancelled shortly after he left? Hmmmm...

I think the point I'm trying to make here is that whenever Judd leaves a book a radical overhaul of it is needed to get it back on track. That's a poor trait for a writer to have when they're using borrowed characters like DC's.

The unfortunate problem with being a non-Winick fan is that the vast majority of people criticising him (on the internet anyway) are those in the first camp who don't want to see any "scary" gay or HIV+ or whatever people in their books. And the fact that Judd usually adds one or two into all of his makes him public enemy #1 in their eyes. And they get VERY vocal about it.

This annoys me because it shifts all the focus (re: Judd's work) onto whether gay people should or should not be in comics (as a gay person I think they definitely should) instead of where it should be - which is that he is a sucky writer (IMO anyway) who should probably just work with his own creations.

Posted by Jerry on :

Yeah, I have to agree that it started to turn with Batman, got worse with Titans, worse still with Shazam, and continued down with Green Arrow.

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

Blacula, you put into words a lot of what I was thinking.

Judd actually seems to do more harm to the liberal agenda than good. His writing is of such poor quality that it unfortunately always seems to equate "Winnick added a gay character" with "Winnick has everyone acting like they belong on MTV's the Hills" and "Winnick discarded 20 years of continuity so __ can screw ___". Now they are all roped into one larger criticism instead of seperated out.

You can say Glen Beck does the same for conservatism, but to a much more ridiculous degree and on a much more viewed platform. But its basically the same type of thing happening.

Whereas, say, Alan Moore's commentary of anarchy in V: for Vendetta is so extremely well done, that whatever agenda he may have had at the time is more subtly behind an excellent story of incredible quality.

Posted by CJ Taylor on :

I'm not going to bash his "liberal agenda" writing, I don't think it's as prevalent as it's been made out to be. Yes, he introduced a gay character in GL ( a rather young and hipper title at the time), but his run on BATMAN didn't have any heavy handed plot themes.

I am going to point out how uninteresting his run on BATMAN was. It plodded a long, had no energy, and seemed more about Winnick's name that Batman's adventures. His second go round (preceding Daniel's current run) was less impressive both in story and in sales.

EXILES eluded me, GREEN LANTERN bored me, OUTSIDERS tired me. None of these books delivered on the excitement or action for which I read comic books. Judd brings drama to his titles, more soap than pathos however.

I liked PG, and he'll get 2 issues to show me he's not going to revamp the title, but rather maintain it's level of entertainment.

"gotcha. Whyyyyy does DC keep on givin' this guy work?"

He then went on to tell me that they eventually had to stop ordering any extra Winick because only the hardcore would buy his stuff.

I actually feel bad for saying stuff about Winnick, because you never know who's reading these boards.

I don't talk about the man, only the work. It's subpar.

Same here. By all interviews with him (and he might be the most filmed comic book writer of all time), Judd seems pretty cool and someone you'd want to hang out with.

(Stu, don't worry, I'm sneakily trying to trick Judd into hanging out with us so we can free Pam)

I love the Basri cover. Though, on second thought, his Karen is too cute.

Well, I'm not dropping the book until I read it. I will give it that chance. But I signed on for the hijinks of GrayPal and Connor.

If Winnick goes the EXILES route with Peege, he might succeed. If everyone gets aids and goes lesbian, I'm out.

As I was reading issue #10, I was thinking Terra might les out on us. Then I recalled it's still a GrayPal book. And they took her in a different route. [Big Grin]

Read # 12... it was a quite fun ending to the GrayPal/Amanda run.

And with the announced price increases, also a fitting jump-off point.

I can get 2 - 12 at my one shop...looking for #1 though.

Is it worth tracking all them down?

Posted by Fanfic Lass on :

#1 and #2 are the best by far IMO.

Posted by Dev Em on :

I gotta hit the other shop today, if they have 1, I'll get it...then set aside the rest to gather over the next few weeks.

Posted by MLLASH on :

Dev, it's a fun lighthearted read... my favorites are the issues that feature space-gigolo Vartox (7-8 iirc and 12). LOVE Amanda's art.

Posted by SharkLad on :

I picked up issue #12 this week ... first issue I've read ... the art was beautiful, and the exchange between PG and Vartox and the other alien was hysterical ... if the earlier issues are available in a TPB, maybe I'll add it to the long list of stuff I'm hoping to pick up cheap In San Diego ...

I believe Amanda's next project is a Black Cat miniseries at Marvel starting up very soon. This was something I probably would have passed on but with Amanda Conner art, I'll probably end up getting it. (Wanted to share for any Amanda Conner completists).

Yeah and verily, woe blankets the land. Our Fairest Maiden (Okay, maybe not...look, just work with me here, people), she of the most bountyest...well, she most bountyous...will be with me no more after aforementioned said Issue, that which is 12.

As befitting a regal creature of epic Mae West proportions, her story is at an end for me. It was a great story, yeah and true, and twas enjoyed, most especially this last issue, but all good things must end, or at least be turned over to creators I have no interest in reading. And so, I must bid our fair haired Damsel Not in Dat Dress adieu...until the next issue of JSA.

I really did enjoy the story. Amanda's art was outstanding to say the least. I'm just sorry the story ends here for me. Still, with the price increases I've heard coming down the pike, this is a great way to whittle down my pull.

Every panel of Amanda Conner's art thrills me!!
So clean & simple but packed with details!
She gave PGs cat so much personality, it's amazing.
I remember singing her praises just before the JSA Power Girl spotlight came out because people on this board weren't familiar with her stuff.
I'm so glad everyone now recognizes her brilliance!

It was a fun book. I enjoyed the wrap-up we got in #12.

I'm going to stick with the book for a while longer but if the price does go up it will likely get dropped.

Comic Book Resources gave it 5 out of 5. So did Comics Bulletin.

So... how long is it gonna be before they figure out how to screw up Terra?

Here's a preview of the new team on Power Girl. It looks like Judd's trying to keep a similar tone. I'll give him a few issues.

Didn't see another thread for PG, so I thought I'd start one.

I never thought I'd say this about a Judd Winnick comic, but I'm really liking this title. The characters are fun, but the title's no longer campy and has a cool storyline with good dialogue. Winnick seems to be successfully avoiding using obvious juvenile humour (whereas Palmiotti's run felt like one big running boob joke).

The last issue with Karen and Superman working together was great and even Clark seemed to be written well.

Definitely adding this one to the pull list.

I don't know how you missed this thread, seeing as you posted in it a couple times:

Weird, The Search feature didn't yield that one up. I'll see if I can get them merged.

The most recent issue, which featured guest-starring turns by Superman and Zatanna was all kinds of fun. And a good story, to boot.

Could someone please merge the threads?

Done. [Smile]

Caught this preview, little Power Girl is adorable!

(I used to get this but dropped it after a few Judd Winick issues since it lost its funny and was becoming a second comic for JLI's evil Max stories)

Looks like this Matt Sturges gets to write the last two issues of PG before the boot!

PG #26 was just the kind of comic I loved as a kid. It was a self-contained adventure that had a positive message for the kids (remember them?) who might be reading it. It was just a lot of fun! I have so loved that PG has had her own series and that it has been successful. I'm not happy that it's ending in the reboot or whatever. I'm hoping that within a year, we'll find PG (and only one PG) safe and sound on Earth-Two with the rest of the JSA.

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

A PG title set on Earth-2, which is the home of yhe JSA and Infinity Inc, would be a premise I simply could not resist.

I demand Rocky become a DC editor and make this happen!

PG is supposed to appear in Mr.Terrific.

I also really liked 26. I assumed it was going to be a two parter ... with us hanging on from 26. Now we get two whole stories more before the reboot.

The reboot has oddly affected my comic buying habits ... I'm dropping titles like jla because the wrap up of their story lines is inconsequential since they are going to be rebooted in september. However I'm giving power girl and zatanna a second chance since I will not get to see them in this form in a while.

The latest issue of zatanna was also a done in one ... A very tight issue about her without her powers as assassins come after her.

Posted by MLLASH on :

I also dropped JLA... the storyline was awful anyway, so with the reboot... it was a no-brainer!

I'm glad you gave ZATANNA a 2nd chance, her book has been a quiet yet delightful one for me, and shorter stories have been the norm.

Now I'm thinking I will buy PG's last 2 issues... (I dropped it after GrayPal and Amanda left)

26 looks fun.
The cover reminds me somewhat of drawings down by a friend of SarK's who drew the multiverse pics of Arsenal and Lightning Lad - lots of versions of them together.

It's a very cute idea.
I'd go pick it up but my dealer only buys ordered books now.
Maybe he can back order.

It seems like Supergirl had a similar villianess when she was first rebooted this last time, IIRC.
She was at her mom's school campus/library, or something.
sigh
The bad girl could make assistants out of dirt or clay.

Anyway, I'm glad I caught this thread!

I'll miss this title- I haven't read the last couple because I'm saving them for after the big launch. Hedging against the very real probability that I'll be reading much less from DC pretty quickly.

*sigh* The last issue of Power Girl, and we may not see her for a while.

Back to issue 27:

Much like Zatanna and Secret Six's last issue this issue was just one last chance to hang out with Power Girl in an issue that let's us see how awesome, smart, and cool she is.

No big flashbacks, no major plot conclusions, no big meaning except .... that Kara Zor-L is pretty frackin cool!!

not really spoilers but ...
The set up is that villains put her through tests in a plot to learn her power levels, for future diabolical-ness.

Of course PG dosn't play by their rules, thereby sailing through with her wits and super powers.

The best part IMO, Is a book full of Kara Zor-L sassiness.

To summarize, as PG says "I'm smart as hell for one thing."
