Has anyone here ever been to the Burning Man Festival? I have always wanted to go - maybe this year. What was your experience?
For those of you not in California/Nevada, the Burning Man Festival is a Performance Art/Art/Be Free/Get Naked (if you like) /Woodstocky type gathering held in the desert each Labor Day (I think). The culmination is the burning of a giant statue of a man - hence, "Burning Man."

it's a totally ripped off pagan festival. if you want to be on the negative side, they used to make a gigantic wooden cage and fill it with the prisoners of the time and burn them in it as a sacrifice and also purification. it was a harvest thing in a dark, dark time.
on the positive side, it's been revived as an acceptable way to gather in the dessert and get nekkid if you want, and to dance and chant and go wild. The burning part has turned into burning your negative experiences and attitudes and cleansing your soul.
this is a pretty basic explanation, but perhaps more than you already knew?
if you go, I hope you have a wonderful time, and gain something spiritual from the experience.

It's not quite my scene. I've heard that its growing popularity the last several years has also had a negative impact on the festival (but that may be coming from "purists" who are protective and don't like that it's becoming more and more accepted and commercial).

I've fancied popping over for this fesival for a couple of years now, from what I've been tld it's fairly unique for the vibe it's got. And what's wrong with a wee bit of modern day paganism anyway?
