Not to overanalyze, and trying to be positive, um, well it looks like gramps got himself a date to the movies [LOL] I hope he can handle the content without having a stroke.

I usually find Macgruder's stuff funny, so I hope I -am- just being overly wary his intentions here.

I admit I did chuckle in spite of myself at today's strip. [Smile]

i can't understand why i can follow the stip better than the animated series but i am getting a kick out of it. this story is shaping up be funny almost as funny as when in the animated series Grampa wanted a "Golden Shower" when he didn't really know what it ment.
next thing you know Gramps will want a "rusty trombone" or a "dirty sanchez", or even better yet
he'll want his "salad tossed" and not kow the
literal meaning to them. [ROTFLMAO]

I think you mean the metaphorical meaning.

Sorry, it's the English major in me. [Big Grin]

This story could go either way. It'll be interesting to see McGruder's take.

Well Gramps has been shown to not be "with it". And I think that is how we are supposed to take this. Homophobia is not "with it"

Heh heh. Pretty funny! Please do post the rest!

Too bad the film's title, subject matter and period it's set in easily lends itself to the gag title "Bareback Mountain" (guaranTEE you a porn comes out with this title within weeks!).

I saw Jake Gyllenhaal & Heath Ledger lookin' all dreamy on the cover of Entertaiment Weekly, with the title "BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN: The Year's Most Daring Love Story" and figured I'd better see what all the fuss was about.

Nice article-- the movie won the top award at the Venice Film Festival and took the Toronto Film Festival "by storm", and there is already Oscar talk.

I admired the courage of the actors involved (both straight as boards). Ledger admits he "had nothing to lose", coming off the heels of 3 flop movies in a row. That kind of thinking will win him big props, I think. And Jake is a *HOT* name right now, with Jarhead a big success. Per the article, this is the real deal-- no glossed over or off-camera non-sex scenes, either. This movie could end up being a REALLY BIG DEAL.

I'll have to see it alone, because I think it's a real tear-jerker...

Aww, Mike... don't see it alone. Come to Birmingham and see it with Lee and I.

Heh! Cute. Poor Gramps!

The EW artcile says they are marketing Brokeback Mountain directly to middle America (the people you would least think would want to see it), so this 'toon-scenario will probably actually happen in real life.

Aaaww, Gramps sounds a wee... conflicted... [LOL]

I dunno, Laddy... after watching what is sure to be a powerful love story I'm probably going to wanna throw down the nearest hot man and go at him like a starving raccoon.

If you like a good mountain man, LASHIE, how did you like Dan Haggerty's character (Grizzly Adams) in that TV show he did years ago? [Smile] [Wink]

But he wasn't without his own certain... charms.

Ah, so we should have a private screening.

*sigh*

I'd just settle for it to be shown HERE!!

We'll see, but I won't get my hopes up.
If I wanna see it, I'll probably have to go to Austin or Houston. [Frown]

All things considered, I think it was best that you weren't with me, Lash. It was not an easy film for anyone to sit through with me.

When you and I meet face to face for the first time, I hope it's in happier surroundings.

KP, Have you read the story?

Just saw Brokeback Mountain in NY... It was a terrific, very powerful movie... great performances by all the main actors. I knew going in that Heath Ledger had a career-defining role, but I was also surprised at what Michelle Williams and Anne ("Princess Diaries") Hathaway did with their smaller, supporting roles.

Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana really did a great job expanding Annie Proulx's slim, 30-page short story. As with "Narnia," I thought that the stuff that was added to flesh out the movie actually improved on the already stellar source material. There was one little bit at the end that I'm not sure they needed to put in (and which was not in Proulx's story), but I can see why they added it.

I'd be interested in discussing the movie, once more people have seen it. I hope it starts playing in smaller cities/towns/suburbs soon, so that people won't have to schlep to NY/LA/etc. to see it...

I saw Brokeback Mountain last night.

It was a good movie. I can think of two, possibly three, scenes that straight guys might get a little squimish during.

I think the make-up artists did a great job of aging Jake & Heath. (the story spans 20 years)

I didn't like the ending although I can see that is a natural story ending. Click Here For A SpoilerHaving watched the Celluloid Closet, I am aware of the fate of lots of gay people in movies is death. Having Jake's character be beaten to death continues that trend. Yeah it probably would seem more contrived to have them riding off into the sunset together.

I don't think this was the intent, but it seemed like a message of the movie was "if you are gay, you will be punished for going against society"

Watching the commercials on TV, I wonder how many people are going to see this movie, not realizing what the subject matter is. I mean, it's called an Award Nominated movie, and talks of it being a love story, but with the exception of a faraway shot of the two male leads kinda-embracing, the rest of the romanticesque shots feature the guys and girls.

Boy, some str8 boys are in for a surprise when their girlfriends make them go see this [Smile]

You just see their breats.

Jake does go naked once or twice. and then there is one scene of both Jake & Heath jumping into some water for some skinny dipping.

And none of those scenes are the ones the straight boys will mind.

Agree that what happened to Jack was not at all surprising.

Ennis still has me puzzled, though. Quite a well-done show. The downtown cineplex had it in four theaters and the 3:45pm, Tuesday, showing was pretty full. But, this is Portland.

I'm not sure I liked this movie. I am sick and tired of having the gay guy die or somehow ending up alone and pathetic. I also don't like that once again the "women" are the poor pathetic victims of some selfish gay man. I was married once (to a woman) and she knew when she married me that I was gay. It's a long sad story but I can tell you that sometimes and dare I say it, many times it's the women who is just as guilty as the man. Sorry if I sound a tad bit bitter, but this movie brought up a lot of **** for me.

Click Here For A SpoilerIt seemed to me that what happens to Jake's character is actually left ambiguous. He could have been beaten to death, or could have died from an accident -- or something else. The flashback in the movie is just what Ennis, from his point of view and his upbringing, imagines must have happened (it's suggested that the scene from the movie is not a literal depiction of what occurred because Jack looks younger and doesn't have his mustache). In the short story, I think Proulx suggests more strongly that Ennis is convinced that Jack was beaten to death, but she, as the author, does not say what happened definitively one way or the other.

I saw this movie a couple of weeks ago. I didn't like it. Sure, the acting was stellar-- and I want to kiss the casting people for using Linda Cardellini and Kate Mara--and the scenery was gorgeous, but I really couldn't like the Heath Ledger character--I thought he was an ass, frankly--and it brought the whole movie down.

As for "objectionable content", I had to ask: what objectionable content? From the Entertainment Weekly article, I'd grown to expect the movie to be much more explicit than it actually was, so I left feeling a bit let down. Curiously enough, my uncle, who is gay, thought the movie was just explicit enough.

Hmmm, I saw it this afternoon and have to say I was disappointed. It certainly looked beautiful (though a little bit of overkill on the scenery shots), and the cast did a fantastic job. I can see why there's lots of Oscar talk for Heath Ledger. He's great. Jake Gyllenhall's not bad, either, but I think Heath does better.

However, the whole thing kind of fell flat for me. It certainly wasn't a happy ending. I don't think it's a spoiler to say so. But I usually cry at the drop of a hat at these kinds of movies, and I didn't even get a lump in my throat. I brought extra Kleenex, and it's still in my pocket. From what I'd heard, I WANTED to cry. So it wasn't happy, but, for me, it wasn't a tearjerker. It kind of just ... was. It didn't end. It just stopped.

I knew this would happen. Utah megaplex balks at 'Brokeback'.

Larry Miller is the same asshole who broke his contract with the WB network (he also owns a tv station here in UT) because he demanded they quit showing 'urban' shows. He meant shows focusing on any one other than whites. The WB told him to shove it and we lost the ability to see the first two or three seasons on Buffy on the WB because of it. The man is slightly less annoying than Pat Robertson.

Of course the people going to his theater are no better. The local news showed people of various ages agreeing with him when asked of his decision. One couple, in the sixties and dressed to the nines to go out to a movie (the woman was wearing a fur coat!), would only say immorality was immorality and the movie was as immoral as they came.

I really don't know why I continue to live in such a farked up state. [No]

Are they kicking up a fuss because of the gay content?
