I always thought Aqua Lad was cool but I was waiting for to get a kick in the pants much like Dick did when he left the Robin role and became Nightwing.
I think it was Phil Jimenez who made him Tempest right? Anyways Tempest rocks. The costume, the new powers!
I think Aquaman is lame and am glad he's the butt of superhero jokes over in HBO's entourage. I would like to see Tempest replace him in the JLA. Standing next to Wally.

Actually did you see the latest Justice League?
Aquaman & J'onn J'onzz versus Despero. Aquaman was pretty great.

I love Aquaman-- as a kid, I ALWAYS imagined being him every time I went swimming (still do, to tell the truth).
But I love Tempest, too. Though I don't so much like the fledgling sorcerer bit. I interpreted it as his new powers *coming* from magic, without him actually being a 'magic-maker'. Guess I was wrong, but I haven't liked Garth *quite* as much since he began casting tranportation spells and the like.
I thought the water-temperature powers were enough of an upgrade.
With those powers in mind-- the flip answer to the thread's question is that *of course* Tempest is cooler than Aquaman-- when he wants to be. Warmer, too.

Garth rocks, but he's no Arthur! Aquaman kicks ass!
Whatever my opinions of him were before Peter David, it matters not--those first #25 issues of David's Aquaman made him *thee* kick-ass DC character for a quite awhile.

I agree that Peter David's early Aquaman issues were great, but Aquaman will always have one flaw he can never overcome: Aquaman was one of the few Golden Age cases of DC ripping off Marvel, instead of the other way around. After Marvel (or Timely, as they were known at the time) had a major hit with Namor the Sub-Mariner, DC created Aquaman, the bland, nice-guy version of Namor. And five decades later, David basically grafted some of Namor's attitude onto Aquaman.

Mystery Lad, agreed about the water temperature powers being enough. All that magic stuff just gets silly.
