Will Steve get the chance to re-introduce one of his beloved characters? He re-designed Quislet for a LEGIONNAIRES mini-series awhile back.

His ship:

And him:

BTW, they're avatars if you like 'em.

Quislet's pre-boot ship was seen post-boot once, as a bit of a "teaser". It was in the Superboy and the Legion crossover "Future Tense". While Kon was in the30th Century trying to rescue Valor from the Stasis Zone, he and the Legion squared off against his old foe the Scavenger, a nutball who collected superheroes' power sources/energy devices/etc.

In the background of panel 1 on page 6 of Legionnaires 31 there is a green ray apparently holding Quislet's ship frozen/drained. You can even see the unique "Q" symbol on the tail.

There is no mention of this item in Scavenger's armory as to what it is or who it belongs to. It's just thrown in to be an "Easter Egg" (as I believe they are called).

I'm all for Steve reintroducing the little guy to the 31st century. He was a hoot and a half! And the time is right for a character with his powers to be welcomed to the team, what with Kinetix all Terraformed out. Who knows what her powers are supposed to be now? But, as in the pre-boot, I like the idea that we never see what Quis looks like!

Hmm... one wonders how Thunder might react to a little wormlike creature in a spaceship?

Count me among those who would love to see the little smart ass re-booted. During Quislets tenure in the legion we could expect at least one good chuckle per issue. Change anything else but keep his pre-boot attitude intact.

The current Legion could definitely use someone to bring a little light-heartedness to it.

A reader, who's name I've misplaced, once asked ...

"Did you design Tellus? Have you heard from any other Legion artists if they liked/hated drawing him? He was quite unusual looking (which helped make him one of my favourite Legionnaires.)"

I did design the first non-humanoid Legionnaires Tellus and Quislet, and yes, I noticed how much trouble other artists seemed to have with staying "on model." One of my favorite versions of the character of Tellus was done by Art Adams. He seemed to grasp the idea that Tellus' anatomy wasn't supposed to closely resemble human anatomy. Most artists seemed to think of Tellus as a physically distorted human. They tried giving Tellus a human head/neck/shoulders relationship, or they would give him human arms. The worst example is the artist who gave Tellus long human fingers with especially long nails. I seem to recall that George Perez did a pretty good version of Tellus also. Of course we are talking George here ... How could I be surprised that he'd go the extra mile?

As for complaints ... I was once told, shortly after introducing the character, that Tellus looked like "a big yellow lump of sh*t." Of course, that was only one colorist's opinion. I've got to at least give him credit for being bold enough to speak his mind. Now, if only he would have stuck with my character diagram that showed the sensor nodules on Tellus' back and face changing color to reflect the character's emotions. The idea was that Tellus had no vocal chords, and thus, no spoken language. The electronic voice that was emitted from his helmet was a translation of a purely visual language. Tellus' sensor nodules emitted a language comprised completely of ever constantly changing lights."

I've heard you speak on that before, and I'd love for a rebooted Tellus to hold to your original vision. Makes me wish Tom McCraw was still coloring Legion:( ... you know he'd go the extra mile with touches like that!

So what, did Paul L. or the then-editor decide it ultimately wasn't worth coming up with a "color-code" for Tellus' emotions and reactions? Or was it just a lazy colorist?

There actually was a color code for the colorist to follow. I designed it myself. I think it was simply discarded because it was seen as another annoying detail to keep track of. Too bad, though.

I like that ship design for Quislet; it looks like (or I see it as) a facial expression that looks absolutely mischievous, with a big clown nose. Interesting form for Quislet, too - looks very slug-like which is the last thing you'd associate with a high energy prankster, which is something of a joke itself.

There would be a candidate for a Legion Worlds focus: Quislet's home planet.

Steve,

Why don't you use your Quislet redesigns in Justin Zane? You'd just have to give him a different name, is all.
