Sorry to let "real life" intrude, but I got snagged by this earlier on...

Any and all Win NT/2000/XP users should IMMEDIATELY go to http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-026.asp and download the patch within (especially, but not exclusively if you've been getting "Remote-Procedure-Call" errors that have been forcing restarts. Then, its a cure, otherwise its preventative).

Next, update your anti-virus software and run a full system scan. Look here for more info, or if you don't have an updatable anti-virus program installed.

SoM, any idea how this virus is coming in? Is it a worm from an e-mail or a website? And will a virus scan catch it before doing an update?

Its a port-scan thing as I understand it. Which basically means that, rather than you having to do something to get/activate it, you have to do something to STOP it getting in. If you have a firewall that lets you close specific ports (or, as is recommended, close them all then open the ones you need), make sure port 4444 is closed, and 69 & 135 if you're not (intentionally) running programs that use those ports.

And I leave Norton to update itself normally, and I ran a virus scan when my computer started crashing, which picked up nothing. Later, after I found out about all this, I updated it and it caught it. At any rate, updating shouldn't make things worse if you can do it.
