Sorry for the nonresponsiveness. Yes, Mario and Luigi's last name is Mario, hence the moniker, "The Mario Brothers".
As for John Adams, the irony lies in that he was refering to Thomas Jefferson having outlived him, when in fact, Jefferson had died hours before. Or am I thinking of somebody else?

Correct about the last words and the irony part of it.
And it was also the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence
