There's a good article here on what fans want out of their comics. All comic creators should be forced to read and seriously consider that Top 10 list, IMHO.

Thnaks, Arachne!

That's a great read. And I agree with everything Sarah wrote.

I'll shut up now before I go on my own tirade.

From the article: "[...] not only are fan-ficcers some of the most dedicated of comic-book collectors, the better-established and more dedicated ones also have fans of their own."

That certainly described the late Dannell Lites. (See the current thread about her, with links, in "Legion Outpost.") She was so prolific that two sites to collect her fanfic sprang up after she died last Fall at 49. And so beloved that Dave Cockrum's wife paid for her headstone.

Well, the last half of the above quote applied. Dannell was probably unique among fanfic writers in that she didn't have an extensive collection of actual issues for reference -- except for the Legion, and except for a comics store owner paying her in issues for working there, in lieu of cash, late in her life.

Instead, the idea of these characters, after the issues were only read and often in others' copies, remained in her brain to fire her imagination. That's as purely distilled a pursuit of fanfic creation as we're ever likely to see.
