Here's an interview from newsarama:

Fabian Nicieza on Legion Lost

And here's the Q&A thread from the DC Message Board:

I am more concerned about "Loss" that Fabian mentioned in the interview with Newsarama and also I dont buy it that the Legion Lost was stuck in 20th C. due to the fear of the pathogen that they may carry back to the 30th C. I mean, the legion has been to the 20th C so many times like a thousand time and they have been back to 30th C without any problem (unlike Karate Kid and Una. *groan*) and same thing with Booster Gold. sigh. there must be more than a reason on why they are trapped in 20th c.

Sounds good... for a mini-series! Dunno about an ongoing. I mean, what's the motivation for DC editorial, sales-wise, to do this, if it's not to intro more new readers to the LSH or to the DCnu?
I especially like the new costumes SO much better (except for Tyroc's goggles)!
I have to say, if they were they same, i'd be less excited.
I hope we get some clarification on Timber Wolf's non-Wolverine powers and personality. If he says "Bub" once or has claws and healing ability, I'm gone. Hope for same clarification on Tyroc's powers and personality.
Worried a bit about Gates' survival based on Fabian's DC Message Board comments.

Double Chinner and I posted those issues in DCU message boards and hopefully that Fabian will be able to answer our questions.

Given the number of books, teams and characters that are going into limbo in September, it's interesting that Legion is getting a new book, not just a backup book, which is really how Adventure has been used. If DC just wanted to fill out it's books about teens, there are more likely ways one could go. So it seems like a vote of confidence, especially if they actively sought out Nicieza, a longtime Legion fan, to write and assigned Pete Woods on art, since my impression of Woods is that he could have had his pick of assignments. Since the idea from the book came "from above," I would love to know the story behind it,

One answer...the only thing I corrected was changing Wold to Wolf...

>> Question #2-4. Just what are Timber Wolf's powers? Does he still have super-acrobatic abilities? Has he become a Wolverine knock-off? <<

Technically, Wolverine was a Timber Wolf knock-off, but anyway... he will be super-acrobatic, super-strong, have super-senses and be super-cynical. I don't know if that last one is a power or just due to the fact he will be really pissed off.

On Infectious Lass...

>> 3 Are you aware that there is another Legion character lost in the 21st century - Infectious Lass, last seen with Dr 13 in Tales of the Unexpected? Bringing her into your little band would score points with lots of Legion fans. <<

Forgot about that one. Hmm. Wonder if she survived the relaunch...

Good answer on Timber Wolf! I think you blew Fabian's mind with the Infectious Lass thing! After all, if the whole plot hinges on a terrorist with a super pathogen! Who ELSE to stop that threat than INFECTIOUS Lass!?!?

INFECTIOUS LASS!! [Big Grin]

She would make a great addition to this team visually and power-wise!

Infectious Lass would make a great addition to the team power-wise if you get a writer who could deal with the power. It's like dealing with Chemical King, but worse. (Let's see. Locked door, locked door.... Ah! Iron-eating bacteria. And I wonder if she could make beer and wine. Yeah, that's yeast, but...) You also need a writer who won't do anything that's either offensive (most serious real life diseases) or campy (most non serious real life diseases).

Ideally there should be a list of all the diseases that have been used in DC history, for reference. There are some really bizarre ones, and some that would be very useful in specific situations. I don't think anyone has ever made such a list.

Does she just make any disease pathogen that she wants or makes up?
I should think that she'd have to be a little like a Durlan, hense the little antennae, in that her senses would have to scan and actually, taste.
Durlans used to just mock a form, mostly, but she'd have to come up with replicas of the real thing, PLUS synthisize cures, which is VERY difficult.

I would SO love him to pick up Drura for the team.
I'd also like him to have Inferno get tired of the past and want to team up with the Legion, again.
Although she's really from a different timeline.
sigh

I'd like Lyrl Dox, who's supposed to have disappeared, or something, in Brainy's history.
I love that character, although, Fabian has said the team won't have a Brainy to rescue them.

Maybe, he just meant a Querl but a Lyrl will do.

I don't think she needs to synthesize cures. It's possible that her diseases are simply self-limiting. Certainly in her initial appearance she made people sick briefly--not for days or weeks like they would be if it was a normal infection.

It's unclear if she can cure diseases. If she can control them, maybe she can, but even if not there are always things like bacteriophages--viruses that infect bacteria. She could cure a disease by making the *bacteria* sick. And again, you need a writer who realizes this or it will never happen.

Bear in mind that like most of the Subs, exactly how their power works depends on whether the writer wants to make the hero look bad. Remember when Chlorophyll Kid was said not to be able to control the plants that he grows, even though we had previously seen him do so?

It's also unclear if Infectious Lass can generate or manipulate beneficial or symbiotic micro-organisms. The human body has *thousands* of individual species of micro-life that, in some cases, we literally cannot live without.

[Just checked online , and we have ten times as many individual micro-critters in our body than we have individual cells!]

One of the nastier immediate effects of radiation sickness, for instance, is the sudden death of a lot of those micro-organisms, and, in theory, Drura could negate those immediate effects, and even some of the long-term genetic damage, since there are retro-viruses capable of snipping out and reprogramming DNA (used today in gene therapy).

If Drura has the ability to custom-tailor retro-viruses in this manner (or could be trained to develop that ability, or just be telepathically linked up some someone like Brainy, who could 'talk her through it'), she could infect someone with a virus that literally turns them into another individual, on a genetic level (or even an alien!). It might take months to take effect, and leave the victim feverish and messed-up during that time, but it's entirely within the realm of her capabilities...

From a medical standpoint, she's got some amazing potential. She could 'cure' people with various birth defects, by sending in a retrovirus to correct genetic anomalies. She could depower people with the Meta-Gene by having a retrovirus snip it right out of their genetic code, or do the reverse, and 'infect' others with the Meta-Gene (or the gene that makes one a Homo Magi, in the DCU), so that they become superhumans or mages.

The downside to all this, is her powers would possibly take days or weeks to take full effect. She could depower a captured villain, but in the heat of combat, she'd be better served just making him too sick to fight. Attempting to flood someone with enough of a retrovirus to shut them down quickly would probably just massively overkill them, long before the DNA in their trillions of cells had been fully changed over.

She'd make a world-changing behind-the-scenes sort of character.

So... which of these new Legion Lost peeps is going to take up living in a shopping mall, and encounter a metaphysical panda?

(And speaking of which... isn't "Sandy Anderson" still in the present-day DCU somewhere?)
