Yup, well, sort of anyway.

At the con in Brighton last weekend we did the 24 minute comic again. For those unfamiliar with the concept (which is based on the concept of 24 Hour comics) a group of comic artists (some pros, some not so pro) were gathered together and each given a page of a script written by Mike Carey and had 24 minutes to draw the whole thing. We were actually slightly short of artists hence it only being 22 pages rather than 24, which is what is should be, but the results are up here for all to see. In the printed version of the comic my page is opposite Glenn Fabry's. How cool is that? Plus if you look at the photos of the event and find the one which mensions John McCrea's ear (the whistle was *very* load) then I'm sat right next to him. Unfortunately because everyone is drawing you can only see the top of our heads, but that really is me. Enjoy.

(edited to take into account that I managed to misspell *everyone*s name in the thread title. D'oh.)

Aww, thanks guys. It was dead good fun doing it and if it's done in Bristol in May then I'll definately do it again. I was slightly miffed I didn't get a page with a monster on it, but being next to Fabry in the finished book made up for that. [Big Grin]

Great Work Bevis. I liked the whole concept but loved your page especially. A little different to your more finished style I think but non the worse for that.

Bevis, very solid work! I enjoyed the verse/story too - were you given that in advance to plan your page?

If I'd known about the brighton Con I might have popped down, it's only 45 minutes drive from here [Frown]

We got given the full script about five or ten minutes before we started so that we had an idea of what the story was, and were told that the main character should look something like Ron Atkinson and were given some photos of him to help. We didn't actually know which page we were getting though so didn't find out exactly whay we were drawing until we got given the pages (with the bit of verse prepinted on it) at the start of the 24 minutes. t was bizarre having to do a full page in such a short space of time, but I'm amazed at how finished a lot of the pages are. I also really like the fact that you've got very different styles and levels of ability involved, from people who are really only just getting started in comics thorugh to big names like McCrea and Fabry.

The con itself was quite good fun, but a little expensive. Bristol (in May each year) is much more to my taste but that might just be because it's the first time they've had the Brighton con and it was still finding it's feet a bit. A lot more slick looking than Bristol but missing something to my mind. Not sure what, but possibly it was the fact that the small pressers and the artists were given a little less attention than they are in Bristol. When you know you're not going to get big attendance from the major comics companies (at least in an official capacity) then you have to give more attention to the small press and the less mainstream stuff. That's the heart of the comics scene in the UK to my mind and it was sort of... well, downplayed a bit in Brighton which was a shame. Still it was a nice weekend and I got to wander round the Lanes again and see my brother and his girlfriend all Saturday afternoon, which was nice. 'd still say though if you're planning on coming to a con in the UK Bristol would be the best one to start with. Completely different feel to US cons (Far can vouch for that) but the weather is usually very nice and it's a brilliant chance to chat to comics people, both pro and not. Admittedly at Brighton I did get to chat to Andy Diggle (very sweet guy), Frazer Irving (very hot), Jock and various other usual suspects (John McCrea, Mike Carey, Alex De Campi, Jamie McKelvie, Antony Johnston) but the bar of an evening in Bristol is like nothing else in the world if you're a comics geek.

As for my art style ont hat page it's not a style I've used much of late because of the comics I've been drawing, but I did a piece for the Oni talent search that was very much in that style and I'd sort of forgotten how much fun it is to draw like that. In a way I find it much easier to do and think it looks a bit more... well, maybe not professional but certainly more comfortable, than my style for QoD or Oddcases or anythig like that. I might have to do some more in that style just to keep up the practice for it.

Sounds like a blast Bevis!

This is just too awesome for words! How cool is it that Mike Carey and you [and others] are buds! [Big Grin]

And you're obviously the most fab of the bunch!
