Part One

Frances Kane never wanted to be anything special. She didn’t want to have magnetic powers, she didn’t want to be a super-hero, she didn’t want to go crazy, and she didn’t want to be called “Frankie”. No, all she wanted was to live a normal life and settle down with a good man.

She had thought that man was Wally West, but that wasn’t meant to be. His heart belonged to another and no matter how unfair Frances thought it was, it was time to move on.

Frances Kane, also known in the super-hero world as Magenta was now at a crossroads. She could fall into the pattern of constantly seeking revenge against her former lover or she could forge a new path. It wasn’t an easy choice. She had so much rage bottled up inside her. But therapy had been quite helpful. The doctors had all agreed that using her powers somehow made her unbalanced, causing her to have almost homicidal outbursts. She hadn’t used her powers in months and she was slowly starting to feel like herself again.

She moved to Opal City, where she worked in a small office. It was a menial job, but a relief to her because there was nothing there that would entail using her magnetic powers. Every day she felt more like herself, every day she became stronger. But oh how easy it would be to slip up, she knew that’s all it would take, just one time of sliding a paper clip closer to her and her sanity would start sliding away again, like sands in an hourglass.

But Frances Kane forgot one thing. She was not a very lucky young woman. During her lunch break one Friday afternoon, she went to the bank to cash her paycheck. She had no idea that once again, life was going to throw her another curveball.

She waited patiently in line when the man in front of her suddenly yelled out.

“Everyone get down on the ground and no one gets hurt!” Frances was incredulous. She could stop all of this instantly, but doing so would mean losing her sanity.

“Don’t do this!” She screamed to the man with the gun, as everyone around her did what they were told. Everyone, that is, except for her. She instinctively reached her hand out. “Don’t make me do this!”

“I said!, Get your blonde ass down on the ground. Now!” This made Frances angry, and she was just about to make the gun explode into thousands of tiny shards when fate once again stepped in.

A man, or at least the shape of a man, appeared out of nowhere. Even though his face was completely covered, he was beautiful to Frances, his entire body looked like the starry sky. Somehow, the gunman dropped the gun as if it had become the heaviest thing in the world. Had the Star Man done that?

The would be bank robber reached down to pick up his weapon, but could not budge it from the ground. It reminded an amused Frances of someone trying to pick up a barbell. But her amusement gave way to her anger and she kicked the gunman, who fell to the ground as the security guards grabbed him.

The starfield man stood there as Frances stared at him. God, he was beautiful. And he saved her, kept her from using her powers!

“Who are you?” Frances asked, still transfixed.

“My name is Thom Kallor, I like sloppy joes.”

End of Part One.

Interesting pairing! Magenta has been terribly misused, IMO (and even the writer at DC sometimes forget and call her 'Magneta'), so it's neat to see her get some love!

Part 2

“What did you just say”

“I like sloppy joes. I like to eat them on Wednesdays. The dreams stopped on Tuesday.”

Frances was incredulous. This hot guy that saved her from using her powers, powers that drove her insane, was nuttier than a fruitcake himself. Figures.

Before she had time to process this, the would be bank robber sprung away from the security guards that restrained him. He had something shiny in his hand, something shard, and lunged toward the crazy man in the starfield costume. Without thinking about the consequences, she waved her hand toward the gunman, purple energy cascading around her.

The bank robber’s knife flew out of his hand as Frances felt the call of her power. It was so easy to fall back into this pattern. She could rob the bank herself, she thought briefly.

The man in the starfield costume fell to the ground, his hands on his head as if in pain.

“Clarity,” he said softly, almost in a whisper. He looked at Frances. “You gave me clarity.”

But Frances was already spinning out of control. Her magnetic powers were like a drug and everything metal inside the bank began to float toward her as she started to laugh and cry simultaneously.

The star man stood up and put himself between the metal objects and Frances.

“Look!” His voice had changed. “You saved me and now, I will save you!” Frances heard the words but they had little meaning for her. She had almost completely lost control. “Look!” He commanded her and grabbed her head, forcing her to stare into the random stars that flickered on his chest.

It was so calming that she felt the power subside slightly. Instinctively, she pulled away.

“Look… at…. Me!” The man once again ordered. The sharp metallic objects at her command were getting dangerously close to him. But he did not move. “I- I can help you.”

Once more, Frances looked toward his chest. She looked into the beautiful starfield. The stars within in flickered, almost dancing right before her eyes. They soothed her. In ways that she could not understand, this man had the power to hold back her insanity. She cried again, this time with tears of relief and joy.

“I don’t understand,” she said. “How did you know?”

“Before the dreams stopped, they told me about you.” This took Frances by surprise. She had thought that he was beginning to sound lucid, but now?

“The dreams? What do you mean?”

“A long time ago, I knew someone that lived a part of her life in dreams, they would tell her of the future.”

“And they told her about me? And then she told you?”

“Yes. She told me how your power would help me and how I could soothe the rage inside you. She said that we would help each other. And we have.”
Frances couldn’t deny that. They had something that the other needed. It was crazy, almost unbelievable, but it was true.

“Can we go somewhere and talk?” he asked.

Sweet!! I'm not a huge fan of Thom and Frances as nutbags, but the fact is there's a WHOLE lotta mentally unbalanced people out there and in the DCU some of them will have superpowers.

I've always been soft-hearted toward Frances... loved her initial appearances where she is tentatively trying to help the Titans... then she gets dumped by Wally and is later implanted with a demon Trigon seed by Raven (I had for years blamed her recurring acts as a villainess on this Trigon seed, but it's been SO long now I guess that won't wash anymore).

Anyhoo, nice work-- it's looking like these 2 may be what the other needs to level themselves out...
