Both TD and Ultra-Matt have recently received fake e-mails, allegedly from me, with attachments. They are NOT from me-- and I'm afraid the attachments could carry worms or viruses.
I don't know why this is happening, but I believe TD and Beagz called it "spoofing".
Just a warning! I won't send anyone any attchments; and if I do I'll PM you here about it first!

I'm getting returned mail errors. If someone's using the board to send people e-mails with viruses attached, I may turn off the e-mail feature here. At least for awhile.

Hmmm...I'm going to turn off the e-mail feature. If you guys need to communicate with each other here, use the PMs. I'll probably turn it back on later.

Gary, the consideration is welcome, but this almost certainly has nothing to do with the UBB software, especially not its indirect e-mailing facility. Turning off e-mail isn't going to solve matters.
Some people who have Lash in their address book are going to have to run an antiviral program, because a worm is hijacking that address book. (There's an on-line scanner at mcafee.com.)
Probably it's Outlook Express -- in fact, it's nearly always that, these days -- which is made to do the misbehaving.
Apart from that, as with Scott's tennis elbow, et al., some people are now incommunicado, as they've turned off PMs.
Please turn e-mail back on as soon as possible. I, for one, am being hurt by this. I'm already having a hard time corraling the files from LegionPics, few are cooperating, and this is just making it worse.

I just got an e-mail from admin here at Legion World-- the message said simply: Your File is Attached. I deleted it immedietely. I'm 99.9% sure it was fake.

It was. Sorry. It sounds like Legion World's e-mail is affected. How do I clean it? I assume it's here on PowWeb. Grey any ideas on how to clean it?
I have the latest McAffee installed on my computer and have checked for viruses. Nada.

Same here. And I haven't received any of the bouncing e-mails or admin mails with attachments.
Even though the infected mail looks like it came from our admin address doesn't mean it came from LW. All it takes is receiving the file from anyone to attach itself to your address book. And you don't even have to have the LW admin address (or any other) saved in your address book now the way Outlook and Outlook Express operates. The newer versions have this 'nifty' feature where it remembers addresses that you have used or received e-mail from and it does an auto-fill. I believe this comes from a kind of temporary address book that you don't have to create yourself. I'm not sure if there is a way to turn off this feature but maybe Grey or SoM know.

Just to show my ignorance. Is AOL afected by this. They keep telling me my email is safe and all, protected by virus checkers and stuff. I also have a firewall, virus checker et al on my own PC but am never quite sure if its working properly.
also am i right in thinking that opening the email is not the problem but it is any attachment?
