Not your typical ZAP! I'm talking powers that have been given a cool visual representation.
I have 2 favorites...
PHOENIX... when Jean Grey emerged from the murky depths as PHOENIX, Cockrum used a "firehawk" image to represent her TK powers; Byrne continued this. To this day, possibly the best, most original visual representation of "energy signature"?
DR. FATE... from the 70s revival of ALL-STAR COMICS, used by Wally Wood, Keith Giffen and Joe Staton; whenever Dr. Fate was using his powers, an Egyptian Ankh symbol was used as the visual representation. I'd SO like to see this visual make a comeback.
Any other candidates for coolest power signature??

In the 90's, the Ray had a cool, explosive effect. At first I thought it was ugly and obtrusive but it really grew on me.
Agree on Phoenix--probably the best power signature of all time in comics. Psylocke also...the X-Men telepaths have always had good visuals.

shadow forms are cool, nightshade, obsidian.
and atomic symbols, like around firestorm and capt. atom's hands.
also, i really liked how the cyclotron used to glow when he used super strength. didn't ever make sense to me but i thought it was cool (the old justice society's super villain...i think Nuklon's dad)

Not sure is this counts, but Peter sensing something, and half his face showing the Spidey mask with the wiggly lines coming off.

Star Boy's by Keith Giffen ... I was disappointed when it wasn't continued in the reboot ... <sigh> amongst other things, of course) ...

Who knows if Phoenix's "flamebird" effect, Psylocke's "facial butterfly" or Fate's ankh symbols were visible to the human eye? Probably not, I think.
yeah i thought that too. i think others have seen the phoenix forms but im sure the butterfly was only visible to the person psylocke was speaking telepathically to. because she used it to search or spy.
what i do wonder if it was visible was all that pink telekinesis shapes/forms/bolts that jean grey uses as marvel girl.
i remember it was so awesome when john bolton drew jean grey's power in a second story of uncanny x-men. things just moved. no pink force shapes. it was so cool. i thought 'thats what tk would look like in real life' things would just move like a ghost did it. no big pink green lantern shapes ....

If Psylocke's psychic knife (the sum totality of her telepathic powers) was visible, wouldn't her butterflies be too?

hmm good point, maybe it was an optional thing.
i remember john romita junior used to do these crazy intricate designs for mental bolts for professor x and rachel summers but....if they were mental would they be visible at all or just to the person they hit. but there were some panels where people were ducking them so they mustve been visible.

My fave, naturally. Ditko brilliantly started this.
