I loved several of the series that Malibu put out in the Ultraverse universe. Firearm being number one for me. The whole thing was great, and they had some great creators working on their titles.
Then Marvel bought the company, and gutted them. The only good thing that came out of it was that The Black Knight was headlining Ultraforce for a while.
I'm on a huge nostalgia kick for these titles right now, so I'm starting this thread to be able to talk about these titles as soon as I can get the box from my parents house.
I have all but a handful of the comics that they published...mostly what I'm missing is the last Rune mini series they did I think.
Hope some people will join in on the discussion.

That isn't to say that I'm not unfamiliar with ALL of it. When I was doing research on some of the Superman facsimiles I learned about Prime. He was the Superman/Captain Marvel pastiche who could, if I remember correctly, shed his skin to his nonpowered form, I think.

From Wikipedia..."Kevin transforms into Prime by projecting an organic 'liquid flesh' material from his torso. The liquid flesh then shapes itself into a tall man with exceptionally large and defined muscular development. Prime can revert back to his teenage form by destabilizing the outer body into a mess of protein goo, either consciously or when his Prime-body's energy reserves run out. When this happens, Kevin must pull himself out of the body's remains or risk suffocating from lack of oxygen."

I really enjoyed the Ultraverse universe, I think out of all the new superhero universes at the time it was my favorite.

Freex was neat. It had a kind of D.P.7 vibe, and I miss that.

I loved the Ultraverse: Freex . . . Strangers . . . Prime . . . Prototype . . . Sludge (yes, Sludge) . . . they were all really good super-hero comics in the classic Marvel vein. My favorite was Strangers, written by Steve Englehart.
And, yes, Marvel came along, bought out the competition, and then destroyed it.

I remember reading and collecting *all* of the Ultraverse titles when I was a teenager with my Dad. Some were only "okay" (Prime, Hardcase, the Solution), but some were actually quite excellent: Sludge, Mantra and especially the Strangers & Night Man by Steve Englehart (at the time, I didn't even know who he was either and all the awesome stories he'd done over the years).
Firearm was also a huge high point and remains one of the best things James Robinson did in comics. The opening 4 issue arc is fantastic.
UltraForce was also really cool, especially because it had Perez art after he had been on what felt like a little hiatus. The opening 6 parter was also excellent. The characters Contrary and Topaz felt new and fresh and I feel like a lot of DC and Marvel's females have mimicked their personalities.
Freex was also a cool title, though it eventually devolved into something harder to follow.
Sludge had one of the coolest bad guys: Lord Pumpkin, who eventually got his own miniseries IIRC.
Good times! Then Marvel came in and ruined the entire thing! 90's Marvel was such a bastard company...they were everything that was wrong in comics from a corporate perspective. Much like DC is these days (from a corporate perspective).

I just started a blog to review the Ultraverse. Going through the whole thing an issue at a time...one month at a time. All in relative publishing order...meaning all the books put out in one month get reviewed, then I move on to the next month.
Prime #1 and Hardcase #1 are already up.

Awesome Dev! I'll be reading as you go! We collected every Ultraverse title and I read everyone--it was when I first started reading *everything*. At the time I had no clue who any of the creators were other than Perez when he came over later.
