I've always liked the olympic mascots and the process of how they were created and how they in turn are related to the host country.
Well today, the Five 'Friendlies' were introduced.
Overall, who said that Communists dont know anything about captialism. Not only do these mascots directly relate back to China, but they are very easily could be the most approachable and most marketable of any pervious Olympic mascot. Girls I think will love them, it's like a Chinesse version of HellO Kitty and that stuff.
I like the panda. What does everyone else think?

I think they work pretty well -- they are a bit on the cutesy side, but that probably appeals to most of the core souvenir-buying audience.
And in any case, they're much better than most of the earlier mascots. The multi-hued dachshund is kind of interesting artistically, but doesn't really inspire any athletic heroism. The beaver looks like a snake that swallowed a frying pan. The bald eagle and the Aussie mascots are OK, but kind of generic in a Saturday-morning cartoon kind of way. The tiger makes me want to go buy Frosted Flakes. "Cobi" (!) looks mean. The Athens mascots are just, well, weird -- and vaguely sexual in a disquieting way. And don't get me started on "Izzy"... what a horrible, horrible idea...

Izzy was the worst idea ever. Sam is so a reperstantion of Right Wing America. Beaver was strange and odd. I like the Sydney mascots but then again I like anything Australian. The Athens one were strange looking but were European. I like the Tiger. And from a pure design standpoint, the daschuand is the most interesting.
The Five Friendlies are pure Asian in their graphic design methods.
Did you see the mascots for the Tornio Winter Olympics? It's a freaking snowball and ice cube come to life.

Was Izzy the computer generated thing? That was horrible.
These mascots remind me of almost every Power Ranger type antecedent that's come out of Asia -- not a bad thing per se since it's evidently part of the culture, but it certainly says something about a culture that embraces the notion of individuals with specific and unique talents who pool together to become part of a greater collective.

Too true -- the "Five Friendlies" are actually anthropomorphic androids that can merge into one giant, cuddly, ass-kicking robot...

Wow, Drake, I never thought about that in that way. Thanks for the insight.
