I was in China from May 23rd-June 5th. I did many things in the short amount of time I was in that country. The Professors kept us engaged with a long list of activities including climbing the Great Wall and camel-riding. However, because we were constantly busy my memory is hazy unless asked specific questions.

1) How was the flight?

2) How was the food?

3) Where did you stay?

4) Is riding a camel difficult?

Did you get to see the Emperor's Palace and what was your favorite part of that experience?

Did the other people on your trip cause any difficulties?

1) The flight were extremely long but very good. The Professors did a good job in organizing transportation to and from the nations.

2) The food was good, however it most our group got sick by the time we got to Xinjiang. In fact I am sick now and my family is starting to worry.

3) We stayed in mostly three star hotels. Two nights we slept on overnight trains, which is how most Chinese travel across the country. There is little difference between hard and soft sleepers except for a door, in case you were wondering.

4) Camel-riding was relatively simple, we were a little caravan. Sliding down the dunes was not so simple, most of us got stuck halfway down. I loved Donhuang as a whole, would love to go back there and teach English someday. Now horse-back riding in Urumqi on the other hand was brutal.

5) I saw two palaces. I saw the palace of the Tang Dynasty in Xi'an which is beautiful. My favorite part of that experiance was washing in the lucky fountain. I also saw the Forbidden City in Beijing which is great; but we were in Beijing on the hottest day they had this year. The temperature was 34 Celsius.

I also saw Chairman Mao for about five seconds. I wrote a paper about the Cultural Revolution so it really was a moment of reflection. Despite all the Communist monuments, the Square reminded me strongly of the Washington Mall.

6) I had fun the majority of the time. My life feels changed forever.

You know a trip was worthwhile if you come back feeling like your life has changed forever. How exciting for you.

Congrats on your trip. (Did you get any pics of the palaces?)

Hope you feel better soon, though.

I did get pictures!

I went to the doctor's office and they are very concerned too and running lab tests. But this too shall pass and I'll feel better sooner or later.

Really awesome to hear about the trip and your comment about your life feeling changed forever made me smile--what an amazing thing, Vanessa!

One question: how many different dialecs did you hear? (If you could even tell). The various languages in China fascinate me.

We went to a tea shop in Beijing. I tasted a wide variety of tea including white, oolong, and jasmine.

We went horse-back riding and the people running the tourist site were Khazaks. Xinjiang contains a high population of ethnic minorities in China. We also listened to tons of Uighur music in that region because our tour guide has a karaoke screen on the bus. Yes, I sang karaoke in front of the entire bus. My classmates and professors were impressed by my singing and dancing skills.
