They could have an actual rubber ball painted to look like Bouncing Boy. How is that not a winner? In fact, I'm surprised such a thing doesn't exist already.

At the very least, Phantom Girl and Bouncing Boy can join the ranks of plasticized Legionnaires.

Though they'll look funny mixed in with the DC Direct versions.

Maybe Time Bubbles will appear in the series-- wouldn't those make fun toys?

I want a working model of a time bubble! And a concentrator and a distorter and the Eye of Ekron too!

According to a report about the first DVD on August 28, that release is timed to a McDondald's Happy Meal promotion and action figures!

Or even a superboy action figure with red light-up eyes!

That would be pretty fun to fool around with!

Looks like it may be official for no girls in the McDonald Happy Meals. Michael posted on The Omnicom that he found a seller on eBay already pre-selling the toys. The seller doesn't have any left but he did list what was included:

1. Superman
2. Timber Wolf
3. Lightning LAd
4. Mano
5. Tharok
6. Brainiac
7. Bouncing Boy
8. Validus

You can still see the auction (that ended today) with a small picture of the toys here.

This set from McDonalds is the "boy toy" Happy Meal. The "girl toy" is some doll with her friends that have interchangeable accessories (since girls like to play dress-up and go shopping). The target audience for these toys wouldn't want an icky girl in their set.

Posted by superboymddjr on :

Well, we have seen Wonder Woman and Hawkgirl way back a few years ago and they're the most popular ones because I had a hard time trying to get both of them in my hands...I asked them and they kept saying "sold out - top seller" *groan*

Also I like the designed logos on T-Wolf, Bouncing Boy, Mano, and B-5. nice logos.

Yay! A fellow nitpicker. That's pretty egregious in my book -- almost as bad as the Toronto science museum's "Star Trek" exhibit that had a Guinan costume worn by Whoopie Goldberg.

Anyway, I admit I broke down and did one of those eBay preorders just to be safe. At the price I got it for, I'm really just paying for shipping, assuming I would have just bought the toys. I did make an inquiry with a local McDonald's, though, about getting the whole display at the end of the run. She said they usually toss them if no one on staff wants them and suggested I come back in August to see what she could do.

I'm going to check the McD's here in town on my way to work to see if they're available yet.

Not until August 3, ActorLad. Still got a couple of weeks to go. 11 days to be exact.

You can buy just the toys, right? How much does McDonald's charge for them?

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

Not sure. They never charge the same at different franchises. At least not here. I'll probably get the food too (maybe water and the fruit cup they have) so I can have the bag as well.

I know the official release date for the promo but as a long time collector of Kids Meal premiums it's not unheard of for them for them to get them a week or so earlier (or later). I live really close by to a McD's and it's on the way to work so I can check pretty frequently.

Is it just me, or does Lightning Lad look really pouty on his box? Anyway, cool logos! [Smile]

Thank you so much for sharing these!

Posted by Michael Grabois on :

I notice that they are non-posable, unfortunately. Still, they look kinda neat. Probably not more than a couple inches high.

We're going to have to collectively get a list of all of the promotional material - signs, mobiles, etc. - so we know what we have to bug our local Mickey D's into saving for us.

Posted by Suddenly Seymour on :

I went to the Mattel/DC panel and after sitting through 30 billion Superman figures and 50 billion Batman figures, no Legion. So I trotted up during the Q&A.

The sad news is that the cartoon figures are off the schedule for now. They had some workups (obviously, since one leaked), but they've shelved it. It boils down to the fact that they're waiting for better brand recognition before launching the series. So I would guess the earliest we'll see them is next fall.

Hopefully, other licenses will come through, and the name will get out there.

Okay, I'm pissed. The three McDonalds that are on the way to work all told me this morning that the Legion/Build-a-bear promotion doesn't start until next Friday. They haven't received their stock yet. [Mad]

I've been going to (a different) McDonalds every night after work this week and no one even knows what I'm talking about. They didn't even give me an ETA. They just stare dazed and confused and try to give me a big wheel instead.

I got lucky at two locations and snagged Superman, Timber Wolf, Lightning Lad, Bouncing Boy and Tharok for $2.50 each, without a meal. But all the other stores I visited had only Superman and/or Timberwolf, or didn't have any at all.

I'm not sure I got the whole story but one of the counter people told me that Superman and Timberwolf are the first wave and the others will follow. Here's the sequence of release advertised by one of the locations:

Build a Bear / LSH
Hearts for You & Vanilla Fudge / Superman and Timberwolf
Fru Fru Poodle & Curly Teddy / Lightning Lad & Mano
Nikki's Bear & Playful Puppy / Tharok & Brainiac 5
Spring Bear & Kitty / Bouncing Boy & Validus

Not the one i would have wanted...but it's a start.

I picked up a Superman and a Timberwolf. I like them but I wish they were a little more action figure-ish like some other promos they've had. At least the trading cards and nice boxes kind of make of for the fact they're basically mini-statues.

I went to the Colfax Ave. McD's in Lakewood Co and all they had was Superman.

Posted by Michael Grabois on :

My closest store in Houston only had the Superman and Timber Wolf, same as a friend in LA, so I figured it was like that everywhere. I did see my store had some sort of display case but I did not see any posters or anything else. They got rung up on the register as "Happy Meal Toy/No Food" for $1.79 each.

The poster has Superman and Lightning Lad. I can't recall the slogan but it's actually only the bottom half. The top is displaying the "girl toys."

2nd trip to McD's. got Brainiac 5, Bouncing Boy, and Validus!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

I got all 8 from my local McDonalds!

Now the question is... what do I do? I still have each of them in the sealed plastic bags. Do I neatly cut that open and take a look, then put it all away? Do I just ravage the packaging and play with the figures? Something in between? I'm unsure.

I don't *want* to go to McDonalds because that food hurts my stomach, but I do kinda want to continue to support these toys while they're on the maket. It'd be cool to get extras.

Such a dilemma!

Posted by Michael Grabois on :

I had to go to 4 stores before I got them all. Most had only Superman or him and Timber Wolf, but the last had a carton with all of them. In Houston they're all $1.79 each.

I took some photos of the advertising (all but the poster) and they're up at the Legion Omnicom.

Posted by rtvu2 on :

Two trips and I got Seven of them. Still missing Validus. Guess I will try the MickeyDs near work tomorrow.

There is a big price difference between the two different ones though. I got Superman and Timberwolf for $1.98 at one and then the other 5 cost me 9 plus at another. Off course it was a McDonalds that had flat screens, a lounge area and free wifi.

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

After visiting a couple of other McD's today I started thinking. $1.95 + tax would come to $16.83 (not counting the gas to drive around town). On eBay I found a full set for $10.99 + $3.50 shipping. Saving me nearly $2.50, again not counting gas. That'll get me a gallon of gas. Now just to call a couple of the local managers to see if they'll save me the advertising.

Reading the comments (and links) and the Omnicom, it seems to me that everyone involved (McDonalds, WB/DC, and the fans/consumers) would have been better off if they had produced another set of 8 "girl toys" action figures that included (so as to not get too obscure) -

Saturn Girl
Phantom Girl
Triplicate Girl
Triplicate Girl (White)
Triplicate Girl (Purple)
Triplicate Girl (Orange)
Emerald Empress
Alexis Luthor

(Of course I'd have missed not having Persuader even more if they went this route...but still!)

Just grabbed the entire set on ebay for 17.99 with free shipping.

i'll continue to buy Happy Meals for extras however. My goal is to grab two sets total. i'll have the set i just ordered in mint condition and i'll have the other set that's opened.

I went on EBay last night and got a full set for "buy it now" of $21 US, shipping included. That saves me the aggravation of going to McDonald's, and the temptation to eat McDonald's food. When they arrive, they will become the property of the 5-year old, like everything in the house. I can't believe I will have a Lightning Lad, a Validus and a Mano in da' house!

Posted by Pov on :

I had Mom stop by the McD's along the way over. They were only selling the toys with the Happy Meals. [Mad] Mom took one for the team, and got a meal too. Had to insist on two different toys; They definitely didn't have their A-team working this evening. [Roll Eyes]

I ended up with LL and Mano, and we both got generic bags. There's another store on Main Street Willi, I'll have Mom or one of my sisters check there. And if I get a good enough deal, I may still get the set off the 'Bay. The extra's will go to Alex. [Smile]

I'm halfway there now (thanks to my lovely wife). I got Lightning Lad and Mano at lunchtime today, and my wife had to run some errands tonight. When she returned home, she presented me with the Superman & Timber Wolf figures she got at a different McDonalds! I love my wife!!!

I see by the bags they are #1-4 of the 8 if you check the bags' numbering. Makes me wonder if the stores are trying to only release them in order...you know, open box #1 (with Superman & Timber Wolf in it until the supply is gone, then open box #2 with LL & Mano. Maybe I'm reading too much into it.

I've also got to say, I love how the Happy Meal Box has the Interlac on it!!!

I love that they actually thought about how the figure would stay in the box and added the formed bottom piece to keep them in place. Sometimes they actually think these things through. The only thing keeping this set from being the ultimate Legion toy collectible is the absence of the girls.

Couldn't agree with you more on that fact LL!!! What were TPTB thinking leaving the girls out? Does this mean we have to wait for the "Girl Toy-female Legionnaires...Boy Toy-Build a Bear dude" McHappy Meals??? [Frown] [Frown]

No matter how complete the set of 8 is, it will seem only "half full". And only 3/5ths of the Fatal Five? Whatzupwidat?

Yay! I got my eBay auction figures today! The look great, though why did they paint Lightning Lad black? I thought the photos that were posted were just poorly toned.

Still, never thought I'd see a Legion Happy Meal, so whoopee!

Posted by Omni Craig on :

I finally got Bouncing Boy, so now I only need Validus to complete the set! [Smile]

But I also have to admit I'm a bit worried... see for all the years McDonald's has done Happy Meals, I have never wound up with a complete set of any of their toys??? And I have 4 young children, so there has been ample opportunity to complete even some of their "lamer" sets of toys.

I must break this cycle now. The Legion "AR" fan that I am cannot allow me to fail in finding them all!!!

(You know, I never realized how many McD's there are within 10 miles of my house. I've got them all on speed dial now, calling and asking which characters they have on hand. They've got to think I'm some kind of pest...or a freak.)

I picked up a Tharok last night after forgetting to try the McD's in Chicago while I was on my vacation.

Over the weekend, we got 3 more Brainy's. I tried to give one to my 5 year old neice, but she didn't seem very interested. She likes Disney Princesses. Maybe I should have asked for the "girl toy?"

BTW, my daughter loves "boy" toys, and has lots of action figures! She's cool.

Stopped by and picked up a Brainy after work. Which leaves me needing a Chuck, Garth, Mano, and Validus.

Posted by Surge Pack on :

I'm missing Mano, Timber Wolf & Validus. Hope to find them soon.
What I would like to do if I end up with a bunch of the other characters is try to set up a swap with the Legion World gang. I been trying to get 2 at a time (some of the McDs have a variety on hand)I also go in blind hoping to be surprsed by what I get. I can only assume that I will end up with more than one of a character. Now unless you really like McDonalds hamburgers I would love to trade with gang, heck if I end up with a bunch of one character I'd give them away. Something to think about like a cross country pool for the toyes. Anyway just an idea.

Posted by Omni Craig on :

I stopped by my local McD's again last night (without spending a half an hour calling all the nearby ones first), just to see if Validus was there, and they had him!!!

Finally got a complete set (well, one for me, and one for my 4 boys to share...). Now I can focus on the more important things in life... like the countdown to season 2 of the cartoon!! [Smile]

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Got a Bouncing Boy today. Now I have my complete un-opened set, and loose Brainy and Bouncy to keep each other company.

Somehow that feels better than just having the unopened collection. I don't know why.

Oh, and I'm keeping one or two of the Happy Meal boxes in the best condition possible.

I'm now entertaining the thought of asking the McManagement for their display posters, etc. I'm not a total AR collector, but if it's easy, I'll go for it.

I didn't make any concerted effort to collect them all, but I did get a couple. The best thing to me was seeing Interlac on a Happy Meal box! I mean, if felt like a big validation of this lifelong obsession. Our secret little corner of comics fandom is plastered all over an icon of Americana.

Today I finally hit my goal of having at least 21 sets (1 to open) of the Happy Meal figures.

Hopefully, my insanity will encourage Mattel to produce their figures (with girls!).

I haven't made any effort to collect the Happy Meal toys, but a friend did pick up two for me: Lightning Lad and Validus.

They're both cute, but ... is anybody else bothered by the fact that LL towers over Validus? Validus is supposed to huge, not Danny DeVito-sized.

(And yes, the irony hasn't been lost on me that Validus is Garth's son!)

It looks like we're not going to be able to track down a Timber Wolf. If anyone has a spare they'd be willing to trade, I could send maybe a Mano or a Tharok your way; e-mail me if anyone's interested.

Matthew, if you don't get any other offers I may have an extra TW from my first purchase. Just let me know.

Thanks. I'll give it a while.

Matthew, I also have an extra Superman, the other figure released the first week along with Timber Wolf. I'll save both for you if you wind up needing them.

Thanks. It looks like I'm going to take you up on that...

Mostly I've been collecting them for my son. We've got some doubles, and I've claimed them for myself, but I don't insist on having the complete set for myself. Right now our doubles include Lightning Lad, Brainiac 5, Bouncing Boy, Mano and Tharok, plus an extra Bouncing Boy still in the plastic bag. My son's only missing Timber Wolf, and the only ones I really insist on keeping for myself are Brainy and Bouncing Boy, so I can send you Lightning Lad, Mano or Tharok, or an unopened Bouncing Boy, for a Timber Wolf. I don't need Superman for myself, but if you really want to move him I don't mind.

I wound up with another extra TW this morning so that's not a problem. I can send you a TW and Supes for a Lightning Lad. I have a friend who's son loves him and the stores here or sold out or never released him.

These are GREAT! The packaging is top-notch... love the little cards inside the front cover, and the molded backings for the figures.

The only downer, as others have mentioned, is the lack of the girls. - Too bad we can't campaign McDonald's for a girls-heavy wave... We could call Micky D's corporate complaining our little daughters, grandaughters and nieces -reeeeaally- wanted a Saturn Girl, Phantom Girl or Emerald Empress so the can play "Legionnaires" with their brothers and cousins. Poor Persuader gets lumped in with the Triads (Lu, Orange, White and Purple) and the rest of the girls. [LOL]

Ironic that the axe-wielder didn't make the cut...

Sorry.

Truly.

Well apparently the promo is now over or almost over since I've seen commercials for the next one today. I'm still missing a Mano and Lighting Lad though. [Frown]

Oddly enough, he was the first one to get Heroclixed...the last one is Tharok - soon to be out next week.

I now have a Mano in addition to Validus and Lightning Lad. And it looks like this is going to be it for me.

Two villains ganging up on a hero. It looks like Garth's run of bad luck remains alive.

Quote from my 9-year-old daughter:

"Why aren't there any GIRL Legionnaires at McDonalds?"

My response: "Girls are too smart to eat at McDonalds."

Quote 2 from her:

"Why are the girl super-heroes always sidekicks or something?"

My response: "Let's go to Baltimore, a man named Dan Didio can answer that question for you."

Have her ask about the changes to season 2 as well. Fewer female characters my nass.

She wasn't talking about girl legionnaires in Quote 2. She's actually seen more of the LSH cartoons than I have, and my 6-year-old has seen more of the JLU series than I have.

The 9-year-old's view of the world of comics is skewed by the fact that she's only read LSH31, JLU, Krypto, and the very, very few comics from "daddy's comic vault in the basement" that I've let her read.

If she's still reading comics when she's older, I assume her question will be, "Why are all the female super-heroes lesbians?"
