ok, YOU sit on a panel with two other Legionnaires and get to be judges for the first round of eliminations.
[Big Grin]
What are you looking for in a new Legionnaire?
Are you actually looking at all?
Would you have a gender preference?
What about a racial preference? Anthropormorphic or alien grab-bag? Little spaceships?

..and always remember "No new Legionnaires is preferable to new dead Legionnaires."

..and for a little fun, since we already know Lightning Lad is on the panel, who else would you ask to be on the panel if you had your choice of Legionnaires of the toonverse to choose from?

at least one detachable body part.

I think the traditional requirements for membership are still the best: a unique and effective super-power which the applicant can fully control, being of good character, and in good psychological and physical condition.

My criteria would also be, first and foremost, those He Who Wanders posted.
I'd also like at least one boy (with or without certain alien characteristics), one girl (with or without etc..) and one applicant, and new member, who's so alien that sex is not applicable and who'll be different than anything we've seen before.
If the boy or girl had certain "quirks", unusual character traits or needs, so much the better.

I miss the fantasy characters like the White Witch, and the mystical aspects of the Legion, so I wouldn't say no to a new member or applicant with mystical powers or disposition. I know that's not very original but mystical characters, add a "magical" dimension to the Legion that's lacking today.
Even if such characters ended up in the Subs (I want them back too, both as a concept and as characters) I'd be happy to see them from time to time. [Smile]

A mix of familiar and fresh would be neat, with at least one practical (Nightwind? Dawnstar? Projectra?), one (just one) goofy (Antennae Lad? please not Double Header or Arms Fall Off Boy) and one who has to be disqualified (Storm Boy? Lester Spiffany?).

Perhaps Mentalla could show up to audition for the 'Saturn Girl' position, and Garth could get all quiet and vote against her, arguing that 'we already have a Saturn Girl, and I'm not going to let someone replace her just because she's hurt.'

Definitely at least one strong female. And by 'strong,' I don't mean 'weak and fluffy power, but a gung-ho attitude.' I know it's a comic-book tradition for the guys to have active powers like energy blasts and super-strength and the gals to have passive powers like hiding and healing and shielding folk from harm, but I'd like to see a female character with significant power (like Kid Quantum II).

This does seem like the possible entry point for Karate Kid, whom we have seen in the credits. Normally I would rather see him introduced in a storyline involving his father's Black Dragon criminal organization working with Imperiax and Val breaking free and helping the Legion take down his dad, but we've already got that sub-plot going on with Brin and his father.

Oops. The topic was about the cartoon/cartoon comic and I was talking about the main LSH comic.
Anyway, what I said above can be applied to the cartoon too, but we've already seen the Subs.

I'd really like to see a female "powerhouse" Legionnaire in the cartoon and the comics, as Set suggested!

I wonder if Viewtiful Joe could pass Legion tryouts?

You know who I'd like to see... I'd like to see a reimagining of Flederweb so that he was kind of a 31st-century Khundish version of Batman.

Flederweb would be cool.

there is a strong lack of Asians. and not just Chinese, Korean or Japanese. I'm talking Indians and Middle Eastern heritage as well. India and China are two of the most populated countries in the world. in 1000 years, are the native people to those areas still going to be around? yes.

in college, i took a sociology course where we discussed populations and what the future "person" is going to look like. blond hair is a recessive gene that may someday be extinct, when a child is born with mixed race genes, they are usually darker than the Caucasian parent, European heritage, race-wise, is visibly recessive when coupled with Asian, African, or American (indigenous) heritages. skin tones like that of Asians (middle eastern, central Asia, and china/Korea/japan) are going to become more common since it is a heavily populated region of the world.

so, i think it would be cool to see a legionnaire from New Delhi or Beijing or East Timor or Mongolia or Syria that actually LOOK like they are from a ancestry of people from those areas! if Val's from Japan and is supposed to be Japanese, he should look it!

the Avatar TV series does a GREAT job with making a cartoon that doesn't have to be predominantly European or African skin tones! the Americas and Asian indigenous populations are "reds" and "yellows" and they are vastly under-represented in comics and cartoons. the Legion could definitely take a page from their book ... er ... cell from their episode? Dawnstar and Karate Kid are great starts, let's see more!

...and more aliens!

I think Val was half-Asian. Father Japanese, mother Caucasian.
I too liked the ethnic diversity in the old Legion.

Blue eyes are also recessive, IIRC. In 1000 years, the vast majority of people should appear Hispanic or Middle Eastern, with darker skin, brown eyes and black hair. Since blue or green eyes and red or blonde hair are recessive, they'll never go away, just hang out in the background, and crop up more rarely than they do at present.

The Legion has always impressed me with how many brown-haired heroes they've had. Superheroes almost always seem to have black hair (for DC's big three of Diana, Bruce and Clark), or be blonde (for Marvel, which even had a running gag about how many of the Avengers men couldn't be told apart when they took their masks off).

But, while I'd like to see more aliens (non-humanoids, that is), more ethic variation and more powerful women, it's a Legion tryout, not an affirmative action seminar. To quote Cher (from Witches of Eastwick), 'What the hell, if it works, it's in.'

That's ok Dain. I started the topic and did the same thing!
[LOL]

Love love love that Mentalla idea. That would be sweet, especially if we get the chance to see Tellus competing against her in a tryout episode.

I wonder if this Sunboy is as snarky as the reboot Dirk? While it was somewhat funny to see LL and SB making catty comments to each other in the reboot tryout issue I thought it was unfair to the less than ideal wannabes for the testosterone twins to judge on "babe appeal".

I don't think they'll ever do it, but I'd like to see one of the following in a Legion tryout either in the comics or the tv show:

1. An Amazon.
2. An Atlantean.
3. A Feitheran (Norda's people)
4. A Gorilla from Gorilla City

Heheheh. I hadn't noticed you had [Big Grin]

Now that I think of it, I wouldn't mind seeing some of the "weirder/funny/strange" applicants like they used to have. You know, X-Bomb Betty, ArmsFalloff Kid, that "Einstein" looking alien etc (Except that Legion Clubhouse applicant. There's a limit to the extent of "weird"). [Razz]

I'm so excited about who we may see in the crowd shots for this one. Champions in season 1 was such a treat because we got to see a few people that we've known and loved for years and years before taking their individual places as stars in the Legion's universe. I have high hopes to see some of the legendary Legion rejects. Mentalla being mentioned in this thread really got me fired up about this.

Karate kid was mentioned here too, it would be awsome to see Sensor Girl and KK join together...even Nemesis Kid would be cool.

Champions was a fantastic episode. One of the best and funniest. Mentalla and Jeckie and Val? Wow!

We know that the ancestors of Scandinavians came from warmer climes and evolved into their lighter characteristics in a cooler and shadier environment. Humans have just recently come to be a species that rest, works, and plays almost exclusively indoors, out of the heat and direct sunlight. How will that affect the phenomic assertions of our descendants 1,000 years hence?

I would love to see greater diversity in the Legion (including an Asian-looking Val), but that has more to do with my vantage point in the 21st Century than predicting breeding patterns and resulting physical types. It is just better story-telling.

wait..
I'm sorry if I gave the impression that there was any official news about various characters who may appear in the tryouts. Those names are just high on my wish list.

Posted by Dain on :

You didn't, don't worry about it. I was just fantasizing (I do that a lot!) [Smile]

Anyways, the funniest episode, imho, was The Subs where we got to see them in action. Funny and amusing and very decent portrayals of the Subs.

There are so many - practically everybody -characters i'd like to see both in the cartoon and in LSH31, and some new ones like Jordana Gardner, even though she wasn't an applicant.

My qualificatations and criteria?

1. Power
2. Versatility
3. Tactical effectiveness
4. Time to manifest
5. User experience

Basically a healer, a strong person, a telepath, a speedster, an intellectual, a high-octane energy wileder and a veteran. Or maybe... I just play too much Final Fantasy.

There's a thread here reminding us of the definite need for a female "heavy hitter". Too true.
It seems to be ok for a guy to have a more passive power like Matter Eater Lad but where are the high octane fems?

I wanna see Ferro Lad's twin sister!!!
Come on guys! Really shake the cartoon up with Ferro Lass!
