Surely this deserves its own thread, yes? (Though originally mentioned by Mystery Lad in the L3W thread.)

Legion on Smallville, Newsarama.

Legion on Smallville, CBR.

At best (for some) this will further cement the Legion as a cross-version, critical step in Clark's becoming Superman.

At the least it will be the first live action depiction of legionnaires. Who will play who?

Cool, I'm all for the Legion getting more exposure, expessially when it strengthens their ties to the Superman legend, something that has been missing from the comics far to long.

Thanks once again Geoff Johns

It'll be the live action debut of the real Legion...

But their unofficial live action debut was on the late 80's Superboy TV show. I haven't seen that show in a long time and the names weren't quite the same, nor were the appearances exactly like we are familiar with...but it was 2 guys and a girl from the future, and they were based on the Legion IMO.

Incidentally...that show also debuted an evil alternate Universe version of Superboy that wore sunglasses and a leather jacket...about 4 years before Connor Kent was even created.

That show was a great show...and it was similarly cursed the way that Superboy and the Legion have been...

It had extremely high ratings and was cancelled because TimeWarner wanted the rights to the character back.

Kinda like the cartoon was cancelled not because of ratings, but because the animation company shut down.

Kinda like the Legion was retconned, not because it was unpopular, but due to editorial edict.

Kinda like the Legion wasn't removed from Adventure because it was unpopular, but because of an editorial decision.

Sigh.

I hope they don't make an appearance.

Let's face it...Smallville's the proverbial "neighborhood gone to pot".

A show that had good potential, and peaked with the appearances of Green Arrow and Impulse, now gone awry. The show does not excite me anymore, and I hope they have the decency not to butcher the Legion for myself and any other Legion fan.

I'm sorry, but this news does nothing more than raise my concern for my so cherished super-team.

But who knows? I could be surprised. If that's the road they're taking...Kristen Bell for Saturn Girl, please!

CBR has a short video interview with Geoff Johns up about his Smallville Legion episode.

I was never a fan of the show but this I will watch.

Superboy, can you provide linkage, wiki, or pictures of said occurance? I remember the show (vaguely) but am interested learning more?

Well, really, if anyone could find anything, that would be great.

As for Legion on Smallville, very cool. Very cool.

With anyone else, I might have some concern given that the Smallville teens have long sense had their third facelift. Johns is both loyal to Legion and to the Legion fan.

I believe he's thinking of an issue of the tie-in comic, rather than the show itself...

No...it happened in the show too. I can't remember if the comic was actually tying into the show at that point or not, I think it did, but there definitely was an episode of the TV show where two guys and a girl came from the future...

Smallville is hit or miss these days, but this sounds entirely watchable.

From the way Johns was talking, I'm guessing the
Three Founders are gonna make an appearance, but also a few more, from the sound of it. Who do you guys think will show up?

Ferro Lad, so he can die saving Tom Welling? Mon-El, because of his connection to Spitcurl, Jr. ? Brainiac 5, because of his connection to a nemesis we've already seen in Smallville?

Other than the founders, who do you think is gonna show up?

Posted by Semi Transparent Fellow on :

All I can say is that if Braniac 5 shows up, he better be green - not Caucasian like Smallville's portrayal of the original Braniac.! [Mad]

Since we're on the subject...

Unfortunately no member of the Legion team will be the first to make a live action debut for the Legion franchise...that (dis)honor belongs to Mordru:

Did you guys know Mordru water skis? Yeap...he does.

I think Mordru was the first to make into animation as well...seems like he was on the Superfriends once upon a time or something.

Why are Hollywood and Television so afraid of the Legion anyway?

To me it has smash written all over it...you unite the 3 dominant subgenres of sci-fi, superheroes, time travel and space, into one concept. Hell Superman will sell it. It'll have more appeal than Supes VS Luthor for the 2 millionth time.

The large cast thing has never made sense to me...The Enterprise on Star Trek had 400 something crew members, wasn't a problem.

Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings Trilogies had huge casts...if anything, a large cast is a prerequisite for an all time top grossing film.

The Legion has win written all over it as a movie...

1014 on the Enterprise-D (Next Gen Enterprise), apparently. However, you have to consider that near-enough 1004 of them were one-shot characters, extras or plain never seen on screen (they started with ten regulars, and finished with eight. Even DS9, which had a LOT of recurring characters, still only had nine regulars at its' peak)

I don't think the episode will mirror Adventure Comics #247 too closely. After all, taking Tom to the 31st century is probably a bit beyond the show's budget.

Instead, I suspect the show will more closely mimic Superboy #98, with a boy trying to discover Superman's secret identity while some of his pal's look on. Let's say this Ultra Boy is kind of a delinquent, so he hasn't studied his history. As his initiation to the Legion, he has to prove that he's smart enough, and resourceful enough, to uncover the secret on his own.

So, I'd say "Legion" will feature Cosmic Boy, Saturn Girl, Lightning Lad, Ultra Boy and Phantom Girl. If we're lucky, we might get a brief scene in which we realize that one of Lightning Lad's arms is cybernetic.

And, if we're REALLY lucky, in addition to the promised flight rings, we'll also see a time bubble. I imagine that we'll hear Brainiac 5 on a speaker in the bubble confirming coordinates, and maybe briefly bemoaning the fact that he can't join in the mission because *gulp* he's a descendant of Superman's greatest villain.

Now, if we are really, really, REALLY lucky, the time bubble arrival scene will feature the Legionnaires in bronze age costumes . . . well, except for Rokk, I doubt his'd "translate."

We may even get a quick glance on a timescope viewer of some other Legionnaires. Maybe Ayla wishing her brother luck, with Lu, Gim, Reep, Lyle, Dirk, Salu and Chuck seen in the background.

How knows, this is supposed to be the last season of Smallville, I believe. However, there's no reason it has to be the last season of Tom Welling playing Clark Kent. If "Legion" is well-received, Smallville might spin off two new series:

In one, Clark Kent would travel to the 31st century to train with the Legion. Essentially, this would be "Superman: The College Years." The CW would probably play it at "90210 in Space," which is not necessarily a bad thing. It'd put a whole new spin on the demographic the network like to hit, which is pretty well played out on the typical teen-angst show.

The second series, if I had my way, would send Chloe off packing to play Girl Friday to the Martian Manhunter in his paranormal detective agency. Sort of "X-Files" meets "Moonlighting"

True...and I'd think you could do the exact same thing with the Legion. Pretty similar to what they did with the X-men. Actually it's pretty similar to the early years of the Legion and cartoon now that I think about it. Those other characters only serve to add to the intrigue...and they are there for the odd special effects moment if needed. Further development can come in sequels.

I don't think it's essential that all the Legionaires have to be recognizable to the audience either. I think Superman will serve the recognition factor and the others serve the curiosity factor...and the Legion has some visually striking characters...that IMO surpass those in the X-men.

Besides...thanks to the cartoon, we do now have a younger generation of fans that are pretty familiar with the Legion and most of it's members...

Have they introduced Mon-El on that show? IF not they need to do that too.

I have to admit, I'm one of those who got interested in Smallville about year 3, and have since collected the whole series (waits for groan), and it has indeed gone downhill in recent years. But, I have waited and waited and waited for the Legion to come to the screen. The appearance on animated Superman was ok, but not faithful enough. I'd have to say my favorite was probably the JLU episode.
This announcement, however, made both arms and my tongue fall off when my jaw dropped open. For those of you who haven't seen the CBR interview, he really seems to share a respect for the Legion (and in a different interview) Superman and Supergirl. I only wonder if we'll have a second DC implosion if he decides to leave. He writes SO MUCH for DC, and most is REALLY good.
If anyone knows the best board to reach him on, we've gotta make some suggestions (although I think Adv.369-70 is excellent!)and thank him for trying to bring the Legion back to more than so-so.

i'm SO glad johns is writing it, he seems to really like the brainiacs so hopefully he'll have b5 in there. smallville is one of the worst shows i've ever seen, hahaha ;___; so i'm a little bit terrified of how horrendous it'll be, but having johns gives me a little hope. he has a crazy encyclopedic knowledge of the legion.

if it was just the regular smallville people writing it, i know exactly what would happen:

clark and lana have a talk in clark's dumb barn where lana gets mad at clark for some reason and storms off. clark takes off his shirt and bales hay or something.

clark goes and visits lex, lex is drinking. they stand VERY close to one another.

there is an explosion of some sort where lana gets knocked out. this explosion also knocks out lois.

clark and lex stand very close to one another again and blame each other for the explosion, while in slow motion, legionnaires walk from the explosion. no one really notices. lightning lad replaced with lovable comedic relief robot.

supergirl fights them for no reason, gets confused and flies away.

clark talks to the legion in his dumb barn, shirtless for no reason. he stands very close to the boys. all girl team members get angry at boy team members for no reason and storm out.

Totally agree, have thought that ever since Veronica Mars donned a pink bikini in the final episode of the first season. Unfortunately, unless Ms. Bell is a huge Legion fan, there's no real reason to take such a small role.

As for the episode itself, it might be interesting to have the Legionnaires initially try to avoid Clark (being wary of time alterations) and secretly attempt to free Kara from the Phantom Zone.

Wouldn't it be cool if they actually took Clark to the future? That's what I want.

Wow! I haven't watched Smallville hardly at all since the show took a huge nosedive in quality during Season Three (yeah, I've heard it got better again), but I'd sure as HELL watch that episode!

Posted by Ricardo on :

It's going to be fun, but at the end, I'd rather hear some more news about the comic book. That's where my interests lie at the moment.
As for the series, it got better at Season 4, I guess. There are LOTS of unbelievable scenes and shoddy dialogue, but for a live-action superhero series on TV, it is quite a feat to be doing it after 8 years and not get as bad as Birds of Prey.

Posted by Lard Lad on :

Smallville just lost me when it became apparent that every boyfriend of Lana's that wasn't Clark would turn out to be evil and/or die. The Adam Knight storyline was what did it. He obviously started out being legitimate boyfriend material for Lana, but at some point the producers changed their minds and massacred the story. From what I've heard this was far from the last instance of this with men in Lana's life.

But I have seen an episode here and there since and especially liked the actress playing Lois. And I'll definitely check out the Legion episode(s)!

We had a thread I believe, casting a legion movie but my search didn't find it. Can someone link me please?

I've only watched Smallville through library DVD's. Ehhhhh, Lex is cool, and ... the kid with the weird wall? (names and me: don't mix) She's got personality. Pete I like but almost everyone else seems bland. Lois should not be bland. Now Clark, he's supposed to be tongue-in-cheek bland. C. Reeves portrayal is in my mind whenever I think of Clark and I think the new kid does it well, while showing his frustrations at, well being super.

The storyline seems repetitious? Kid ticked off for being bullied gains powers from a meteor piece and goes on a rampage against knuckleheaded jocks.... It has been very difficult for me to get into.

Legion might be just the spark it needs.

Becky Newton, who plays Amanda on Ugly Betty, should have a role. She could be either Imra or Dream Girl, or Light Lass, or Princess Projectra.

Good news: According to this week's issue of Entertainment Weekly, the Legion (or some version thereof) is going to make an appearance on this season's Samallville

Better news: No more Kristen Kruek! Finally! Oh how I loathed her.

Not sure how I feel about it news: Michael Rosenbaum is off the show too (probably got tired of shaving his head).

Posted by Quislet, Esq. on :

I had lost interest in Smallville a couple of years ago. And seeing bits and pieces "Lana gets superpowers and goes after Lex" , The whole Supergirl character, etc. didn't make me want to start watching again. I don't know if the Legion (or their version) will be enough of a draw to get me back.

I didn't mind Kristen Kruek too much and Lord knows I did watch her for sex appeal. Losing Michael Rosenbaum will be a big loss. They will need a new antagonist.

Posted by Blockade Boy on :

Rosenbaum was the most interesting part of the show, IMO, and Kreuk was easy on the eyes but that was about it. Legion would most certainly give me reason to watch, even if they fubar it all up.

Preferably, they keep it simple. The founders (with their original names) come by for visit, play some jokes, induct Clark into their club.

An upside down rocket ship would be a bonus, because in a movie/tv show unlike a comic, they'd actually have to justify it. Lol. That should make the writers squirm a bit.

Posted by Longevity Lad on :

I expected a Legion related Smallville episode would only feature the original 3, but the producers have an opportunity here with any eyes toward a future LSH project:have the trio report their successful arrival back to HQ and an awaiting handful of members gazing at a monitor. Shot properly (underlit, wide angle lens) it would not be prohibitively expensive but would introduce viewers to the concept that there are some pretty interesting characters there they would like to get to see in action someday.
Since we may not get to see the founders in costume (or using their codenames?)at all, I ask fans to implore the PTB with the rallying cry, "Give us a LEGION!"

I've never watched a single episode of Smallville, and I'll probably only watch the upcoming Legion episode, so my first wish would be to see the Legion all Silver Age-y. But if they're different than that standard, I think I'll be just fine.

Unless Garth will be an exotic bird or a little green man or something.... ya never know!

UPDATED 11/18/08: Calum Worthy will be playing Garth Ranzz/Lightning Lad.

Posted by Tromium on :

What the heck?!

No disrespect to the actor but he's just a baby -- 8 years younger than "Cos" and 4 years younger than "Imra".

Further evidence the messed-up founder dynamics of the Johnsboot Legion is not an accident.

I just saw the Supernatural episode that had this kid on it, and gosh, he's awful young-looking to play LL against the people they cast for CB and SG.

you guys are being a bit harsh he's 17 he's playing a teenager he may look young, i rather a young teen play a teenager then a 29 year old play one

They *must* look right, all side-by-side... right?

I'm excited to see this!

'Smallville' has not yet been listed as a credit to actor Calum Worthy's IMDb profile (as is the case with the other two actors) Could it just be a ploy to throw off the viewers? I also have to agree with the majority on here and say that Calum looks a little too young to play Garth next to the the other actors (heck Tom Welling is WAAAAY older than all of them, and LOOKS older too) plus I thought all four heroes where around the say age when Garth, Rokk and Imra first went to visit Clark in the past?!

correction: same age, not "say" age! [Smile]

Recent photos of Calum Worthy from a chap named Tink, the production designer of the sci-fi TV series "Stormworld", set to debut in 2009. Worthy co-stars.They filmed in Spring-Summer '08, so I doubt he's changed much since then.

The Legion's first and maybe only ever live-action appearance should have featured an *iconic* version of the Legion, with three founders of roughly the same age and status, but it looks they're going for the early reboot Legion with a gangly, adolescent Garth playing third wheel to the more mature Rokk and Imra.

If Johns wants to write the reboot Legion, why didn't he just go ahead and do it without the pretense?

The trailer for the next episode is neat. Hopefully, it will be online soon. Click Here For A SpoilerI LOL'd at the use of the characters' symbols, but why? Do they wear vinyl jackets in the 30th Century? If not, why create a jacket or shirt with the characters' symbol? One interesting twist is the appearance of Click Here For A SpoilerPersuader. Will other members of the Fatal Five appear?

Posted by Evolution Has Failed on :

VERY exciting to see that in the trailer (though if you blinked, you missed it! My kids caught it, I rewound the recording, watched it again, STILL missed it, and only barely saw it the 3rd time before finally getting a good look frame-by-frame.)

Too bad it's not being aired until January, not only because of the agonizing wait, but also because this means it will just miss being aired during the year of the 50th anniversary (though I guess you can still count the trailer as the first "live action TV appearance" of the Legion ...and I hope nobody brings up that cheesy live-action Mordru thing from the 70s...besides, he's not actually a Legionnaire anyway).

One other thing: Note in the trailer they said "new heroes" before "new enemies"...the point being, this sounds like we might be seeing the LSH (or at least the Persuader) for more than one episode?

Anyone know if that's possible?

Thank you veryvery and UltraStar for those images captured from YouTube!
Ok so the founders look pretty good together, hope they "talk the talk" as well as they look the part. Even Persuader looks good (not cheesy). Hey I wonder how Brainiac ties into the Fatal Five. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.
I for one am willing to wait until Jan/09 as I'm sure this will be one of Smallville's greatest episode, and fan favorite (on par with my personal fav Justice League episode from season 6.

"Rokk" looks pretty cool. "Imra" looks like a space-tart. Garth looks like an 11th grader in a varsity jacket.

They couldn't do better than this?

I agree, Garth looks a little young next to the other two... but Imra a space tart? Nope, sorry she looks pretty and a perfect fit for the role. I like make up and well kept hair on a girl. Girls who actually look like girls for me, all the way!!!

hahah i don't care how baby/old they look. considering how old lois looks and that clark is the hugest person in the world and like... 19... i'm not really going to complain.

i think imra looks nice, cos looks like a guy from babylon 5 and garth is dorky looking but cute. who cares! as long as they deliver some cool character!! i'd love to see a dweeby garth and slick cos! AS LONG AS THEY ARE AWESOME!!!

Posted by Tromium on :

I'm wondering now .... is this a little window into Geoff Johns mind?

Because if it is, it would explain why Johnsboot Rokk looks so old, and Imra is an early-middle-aged matron married to a man who looks and acts like he's going through his second puberty.

This show has consistently used the West Coast of Canada acting pool over its life span. While British Columbia has a nice artistic community, this explains how Lana Lang of Kansas can be a dark-haired daughter of Indonesian Dutch and Chinese ex-pats with a west coast Canadian accent.

Come to think, given the incoming US President's life story, the casting of Kristen Kreuk as all-american heartland cheerleader Lana Lang is kinda forward looking. [Big Grin]

Its obvious who the real leaders of the LSH are from the way that shot is set up if not the casting. Lightning Lad is right where Imra has kept her man since she stole that election all those years ago, two steps behind and in the dark when it comes to her professional decisions.

I hope the actor playing the Persuader acts the part as well as he looks the part. Muscular actors are a dime a dozen in Hollywood and sometime they may LOOK the part, but once they open their mouths and don't ACT the part it's very easy to lose interest quickly from then on. I hope the actor does the Fatal Five proud. Maybe then we might see the rest of the Five in future episodes! [Shudder]

The main reason I'm watching Smallville this season is for the Legion episode. Now that I've seen the previews I fear it all. I want it to be good but these actors look like the One Tree Hill cast of LSH. The actress playing Saturn Girl has a lame shot of her touching her head. Lightning Lad looks like he belongs in a peanut butter commercial and Cosmic Boy looks like a bad Keanu Reeves imitator. I am hoping for a passable episode at the very least. But thus far the episodes have been so weak. Will Geoff Johns save it? Can he save Smallville?

Posted by cleome on :

It would be strange if this episode of the TV show were hugely popular beyond DC's wildest expectations-- At the very moment when they don't seem to know exactly what to do with Legion at all. Gotta' wonder what would happen. Would there be another Legion show, but live-action and more like Smallville itself ?

Hey, check out this month's issue of Wizard magazine. It has a two-page article with Geoff Johns telling about the behind the scenes origin and conception of the up-coming Legion episode.
Pretty insightful stuff.
It also has a nice picture of Johns with the three actors playing the founders in their cool new Smallville outfits.

If any of my fellow AR Legion collectors wants to get the issue, look for the January 12-18, 2009 issue, with Grissom of CSI on the cover (it's his final week on the show).

Here's one article from TV Guide:

"Think of them as FEMA, only with spandex and kicky boots.

In the devastating wake of what happens at the end of this week's Smallville episode — let's just say that Davis isn't feeling like himself and Chloe is due for a helluva honeymoon — Clark's hometown is going to need a super clean-up crew. Cue the arrival of Saturn Girl (aka Imra Ardeen), Lightning Lad (Garth Ranzz) and Cosmic Boy (Rokk Krinn), all of whom travel far to tackle this task — specifically, from the 31st century.

Played by Alexz Johnson (well-known for her run as Jude on Instant Star), Calum Worthy (who has had a handful of appearances on Psych) and Ryan Kennedy (from CTV's Whistler), the trio of helping hands will effectively introduce Clark to the famed Legion of Super-Heroes — which he, as Superman, one day will join.

The three Legionnaires are slated to make their debut in Smallville's first episode back following the midseason break: "Legion," penned by Geoff Johns (a favorite scribe of DC Comics fans) and airing Jan. 15.

What's your take, Smallville fans? Thrilled to see Clark take another step closer to his destiny?"

Thanks for posting Korbal.

Pretty cool clip of the Legion using their powers, especially the combined use of powers with Rokk and Garth (why didn't they ever do that in the comics?). The actors actually seem believable and play the roles well in the brief time we see them. The are completely heroic going up against Brainiac and act like the Legionnaries they're portraying. They ARE the founders.
It's going to be an awesome episode, no doubt!

The two page TV Guide spread has a picture of the founders with Geoff Johns which I think is the same one that was in Wizard (maybe, I dunno) but the contrast is higher and you can tell that Saturn Girl has a "Saturn" symbol on her shirt under the jacket. That made me happy.
Also, they managed to get through a short paragraph on the history of the Legion comics without any glaring inaccuracies, and threw in a Curt Swan illustration of the founders with Superboy (uncredited, but still a good pick.)

I never have learned to post an image here, but if anyone who can will PM me an email address I'd be happy to scan for posting and forward.

I'm pretty excited by this, and I can't wait for tonight. I've never actually watched an episode of Smallville, seen a few minutes here and there. I was always too AR continuity-wise to accept the forced multicultural retcon of Pete as African-American and Lana as Asian-American. Dude, Lana's a redhead, always has been! I'm not prejudiced, I'd just rather they leave things that already worked alone. Introduce new classmates and friends we just haven't met before who could be Asian-American, African-American why don't you? That would be fine! Chloe is a great example of an all-new character for Smallville who is still around all these years later...of course, because they messed with Pete and Lana, they made Chloe Caucasian too...my point is, Lana could have stayed a redhead, and Chloe could have been Arab-American or something, no problem at all! Just bugs me! Ah well, I'm the guy that hated Superman-The Movie because he was able to fly backwards through time to save Lois. Anyone whose ever read a Superman story involving time travel knows that's not possible!!!!!! [Smile]

Sorry, wasn't meaning to rant here. I am looking forward to tonight's show!

I will say the one thing I already believe will be missing is the fact that in comics, the Legion meant a lot to Clark because he was pretty alone as a teenager, having powers and being an alien, and the Legion became a place Superboy belonged. In Smallville, for the drama and action of the series, he's already met a ton of people with powers, alien and human, and weren't scores of people over the years powered up by Kryptonite meteors? So, what I'm getting at is that the Legion will get the chance to meet their idol, but Clark already has super-friends to hang with in his own time. Can they be as special to him in the Smallville TV universe as they are in the comics? They were like a lifeline to him as a teen!

Hey, maybe if this episode is well received and Welling re-ups for another season, maybe the Legion can show up again and yank him to the 31st century to save the future for an episode too (from what I read in Geoff's interviews, that probably wouldn't be financially possible though...I'll just dream about it then).

LLL!

Pretty good so far but GEE WHIZ can we get a modern Legion story that doesn't deal with Xenophobia or whatever, I'm so SICK of that plot point. I mean, would it be so hard to say he's a criminal from the future (Fatal Five) and wanted to mess with history by killing Clark (you can even throw in the cheesy "you are destined for great things" line). Sorry, but I wish writers would get off that kick, its NOT interesting.

Plus, not so sure about their solution to the Chloe problem, but I'll wait and see how this ep ends to see if it was just an "initiation prank"

Anyways, I haven't watched Smallville in ages, but fun ep so far and I'm liking everyone well enough (I mean, you can't give the characters too much depth in one ep)

Posted by cleome on :

Well, writers tend to react to current events, and our recent history (U.S.) seems to be rife with resurgent xenophobia-- certainly there's a lot of it in this neck of the woods. YMMV.

BTW, is this a good time to mention that I have everyone's home phone #'s and I'm going to call you all while the show is on just to bug you ? If you want to outsmart me and my evil, you'll have to take the phone off the hook at broadcast time. Don't say I didn't warn you. [Razz]

I liked when Lightning Lad said "It's for my sister" and them giving Clark a Legion ring and offer to visait them.

The big major thing of the Legionnaires saying "We must kill Brainiac's host!" Hated it. If one thing should have come down through the 1000 years it should be the non-killing aspect of Superman. They know about the stupid baseball which was "missing", but not about Superman not killing? How about instead the Legionnaires said something like "the best we can do is contain Brainiac within Chloe and she needs to come with us to the future where she will be put in stasis."?

Posted by Hypno Lad on :

That was alright. It was REALLY weird seeing Legionnaires ready to kill.

The characters themselves came across as rather flat. I imagine they seemed exceedingly random to Smallville viewers unfamiliar with the characters.

I think the Legion would have been better served with a playful "Legion of Super Jerks" initiation episode. They came across as a cut-rate JLA with a prophetic twist.

I don't watch Smallville (as I really don't watch tv at all), but I really enjoyed it. Definetly exceeded my expectations. Garth was pretty immature but that happens a lot with people of their age (rage of maturity levels). Rock was quite the thinker, leader, which I really liked as well, and I think Imra was best represented in appearance. I though Persuader would have a bigger role though. They made a reference to Brainaic 5, stated that there were other Legionnaires and invited Kal-El to visit someday. Loved the close-ups and emphasis on the Legion Flight Ring. I liked that they showed the Kal-El's influence over the Legion. Didn't care for the Legion willing to kill Chloe but they learned from Kal-El in the end that there is always another way to solve things; they made it their #1 rule (so good show of influence there). I really hope this episode flies, a spin off would really be the greatest thing. I'd give the episode an 7.5 out of 10.

My love for this episode came to a screeching halt when they told Clark he had to kill Chloe. I still enjoyed all the touches Geoff threw in, but like Quislet said, they should not have been so quick to kill her. The whole knife bit was just wrong. I was waiting for Rokk and Imra to start chanting, "Kill her! Kill her!" They were just way too eager.

I don't care that they learned their lesson about killing in the end. It totally tainted the episode for me.

That said, the little bits of character they were able to show were pretty cool, and everything else about them seemed pretty spot on. I definitely wouldn't mind seeing Clark pay a visit to the future.

And someone should probably go in and add SPOILER to the thread title just in case.

Oh, I thought it was really good. A couple times I had a really big grin on my face. Yes, the fact that they kept trying to convince Clark to kill Chloe was sort of off, but I found it easy to let it go. I guess I'm too used to compartmentalizing different versions of the Legion. The fact that they didn't find it very easy to do themselves makes me guess it's not something they had any experience doing. I loved that they worked in mentions of Winath, the Time Institute and the Subs. Even though I knew the line was coming, when they said "Long Live the Legion" I was a little giddy.

On a side note, it was funny to see Crashdown from Battlestar Galactica turning into Doomsday. Poor guy, getting the short end of the stick again.

Posted by Hypno Lad on :

Moreso than being unfaithful to the concept, having the Legion ready to kill made them seem really, really generic. It's weird how being a bright and shiny future makes the Legion different...you'd think that concept would be hackneyed, but it's so sparingly used that it gives the Legion a unique flavor.

Also - anyone else think it's funny how Garth is totally different in every continuity? "Geeky fanboy" was an interesting take on him.

Posted by Tromium on :

Uggghh. Except for two scenes -- Rokk and Garth taking down Chloe/Brainiac, and the final LLL salute -- this was AWFUL.

What a wasted opportunity, and what a goddamn shame the man who wrote this self-indulgent dreck has dibs on the comic book LSH. Geoff Johns wouldn't know the "real" Legion if they mugged him in a Kansas cornfield in broad daylight.

Posted by Set on :

The first five minute scene, with the Legion spanking Persuader, was very cool.

I did not like the 'human supremacist' crap, because that's just Action Legion stuff that was invented last year for some Superman crossover and not part of the past 30 years of LSH continuity, but it was gotten out of the way fast enough that it didn't bother me that much.

Lots of shout-outs. Mention of some place smelling as bad as the sulfur pits of Tharr or Garth saying 'sprock,' for instance. Kind of irrelevant to the Smallville viewing audience, but cute nods to the LSH fans tuning in and they didn't seem distracting.

I was not fond of the fact that Rokk clearly knew about the fortress when Clark said 'go talk to Jor-El,' and then they didn't go there, they just wandered around and read Chloe's notebooks to try and find her, and chatted up Lana and stuff. Ugh.

The Faster Pussycat, Kill Kill bit was annoying, and then I got what they were doing by having Clark be the inspiration for the Legion's no kill code, and then I didn't like it anyway, since it came off really, really clunky. Despite the nature of the show, they've had some really elegant writing, at times, paying homage to stuff while incorporating it into their own universe. This was not elegant writing. It was awkward.

Still, there were several scenes in the episode where I was all misty-eyed, seeing *some* sort of Legion being acknowledged as relevant to even this very much alternate universe version of Superboy/man/bear/pig. The use of the Flight Rings to catch up to Clark made me smile, as well as wonder how fast those things go, since it's never really been terribly clear to me...

On a shallow note, Persuaders axe look fugly, Imra had too much makeup on, especially in some of the later scenes (and she looked like she would be pretty enough not to need to cake it on so heavily, which, IMO, is more of a Smallville makeup department problem and nothing wrong with the actors judgement, since they are famous for caking Lana and Lois in about 20 lbs of plaster, so that their faces look like death-masks...), and the chinless wonder playing Garth needs to 'roid up and wait for the other one to drop before he plays any grown-up roles.

I could get used to Rokk with a beard 'though.

Chloe once again survives certain death. Good thing, too, 'cause she's my favorite character on the show, and has been since season 1!

Random thoughts;

Brainiac told Davis that after twelve days 'in the chrysalis,' he'd be irrevocably Doomsday. Two hours later, Brainiac is defeated and Doomsday hatches early. Sounds like potential for 'Doomsday' to be saved.

Brainiac is 'reprogrammed' to become Brainiac Five? Huh. I think I prefer a race of Coluans instead, but it's an alternate universe and that's as good an origin as any. (Why Imra would call him Brainiac 'Five' instead of Brainiac *Two,* I have no idea...)

Chloe looked like she was packing at the end of the episode, and not the 'going to visit my boyfriend in the hospital' packing, more 'looking over mementos of my past before leaving forever' packing. Gulp. They keep messing with my Chloe-loving heart!

[Probably because they know that if they endangered Lana I'd be all on the edge of my seat, rooting for the bad-guys!]

Omigod, if one more actor on this show decides to emote by staring at another actor and having their eyes go back and forth like they are watching a tennis match, I'm gonna go to Vancouver and pluck them out of their head! Act, damn you! Don't play pong!

Ooh, the actual EMP scene was WAY better than the previews with the placeholder graphic (some lame-o spinny white thing). Nice graphic! I like the barely decipherable babble of voices whenever Imra would telepathically assault someone too. Very nice way of 'showing' it without making pink bubbles come out of her head or something!

On Newsarama, they said that Brainiac had possessed 4 other people so far. The new incarnation, therefore, would be Brainiac 5.

SET!!!! WORD!!! oh my god!! yes!! god thank you!! that drives me CRAZY!

special request, can someone tell me who the other 4 "brainiacs" are? my cohort is refusing to listen to the "the ball will become querl" idea, she thinks they were saying "querl will be happier when he has a brainiac ball"

i thought the episode was adorable and awesome. i like the "this is how the legion code no. rule was made" thing. this is the best smallville episode i've ever seen. whatsherface who plays chloe, this episode showed me she could act. i thought she sucked before but MAN! she should have brainiac in her all the time if she'll be that cool!!

holy crap, i love all the actors that played the legion, their interaction was great, they had distinctive personalities! ahhh! ;_; i'm so happy! imra was PERFECT! very calm and collected, the way she spoke was amazing! garth was hilarious!! and cos's actor was amazing!!! oh wow, his face! their amazing acting contrasted sharply to the welling cut-out that was wandering the set.

ANYTHING WITH CUTE FIST BUMPING AFTERWARDS IS APPROVED BY ME!!! this is the first ime i've watched smallville and not felt a little bit dead inside afterwards.

My two cents:

Rokk was way hawt. I think I may like my favorite Legionnaire more than ever!

The killing this was very disappointing. I'm glad it was resolved in the end.

Hearing "grife" and "sprock" on TV made my day.

I nearly teared up at "Long live the Legion".

Did this seem an awful lot like a backdoor pilot, or is that just wishful thinking on my part?

If only. I know I would love a TV series or especially a movie (DC could always use the Legion to compete with Avengers...maybe?), but a TV series would push the budget really far. Smallville already has plenty of problems trying (and failing) to not look farcical.

I was pretty happy with this incarnation of the Legion. I thought they went a little too "Harry Potter's red-headed buddy" with the casting of Garth, but I can kinda see this as a younger Lightning Lad.

Johns definitely did his best to throw in as many homages as possible didn't he? My favorite might be how the "exorcism" was reminiscent of Garth's resurrection.

I didn't mind too much the Legionnaires' willingness to kill. It was clearly something they weren't used to doing (I appreciated that Garth ultimately couldn't do it) and it set up a way for Clark to directly inspire the Legion rather than just through legend.

The anti-alien thing in the 31st century might seem a bit too heavy-handed because *we* know it's a new addition to Legionlore and that Johns created it, but it does touch upon Clark's long-seeded insecurity about being from a different planet. For him to know that the Legion is made up of non-earthers is important for this Clark's development.

Well, I watched it and it was okay. Loved seeing the Legion, loved the references "we" would get (acting like a Sub, and Tharr's air, and the 31st century curse words)! I would have to say the "we have to kill her" aspect seemed beneath the Legion I know and love. You idolize this hero from Krypton who brings out the best in people, yadda, yadda, yadda, and he has to tell you to your face "No killing!"??? I get where Geoff was going with this, but I thought it cheapened the core foundation of the team.

Good luck getting Kal to join the team if you off his best friend. That never came up in Adventure #247... [Wink]

I also liked the "We've never even heard of Chloe..." bit, good for those of us fans who know our Superman trivia.

Loved the rings and the "LLL" chant (but they all 3 should have said it, I only heard "Rokk's voice). You could see the budget at play, what with our 31st century heroes walking around instead of always flying. Trying to "blend in" with the locals?? Glad they left the door wide open for a return visit, but I doubt the budget of the TV show could allow for a tech trip to the future.

Long Live the Legion indeed!

You know as much as a Squee-fest as this episode was, I was really pissed off at the fact that the Legion kept trying to get Clark to 'pull a Morrison' on Chloe-iac.
Then they were even gonna go 'Batman/Darkseid' on her themselves.

I was like, WTF, Legion??????!!!!!!!!
Code, people!!!!
Legion Code!!!!!

And then Clark goes and Icons them into their newest and most important Legion Code...
Awww...

Also...
I LOVED all the QFT's the Legionaires lines gave us.
Waaayyyy too cool.

<edit>
By the way...
I vote YES on a Legion spin-off when Smallville ends.
Screw the early JLA now and Long Live the Legion!

I just watched this looooooong awaited episode and I have to say I was quite entertained.
It worked well within the current Brainic-Doomsday plot running thru this season. I'm glad it was the Legion that finally stopped Brainic (with Clark's help) and returned him to the future where they, I'm sure, will secure him.

The Persuader's appearance was way too short, but action-packed nonetheless.

Ok, on to the Founders....

Rokk - A bit of a cliched way-too-serious leader at times and a bit stiff, but not a bad first impression of the character as the actor played him.

Imra - She was the best represented of the three character wise. The actress did a good job maintaining the balance between truth and mystery plus the need for justice that is Saturn Girl.

Garth - No question about it...the comedy relief of the episode, but hey folks let's face it, he more than the other two really mirrored the enthusiasm of meeting "Kal" for the first time with our own inner child's giddy excitement with seeing our icons live on a hit TV show! Right???

Their use of their powers was spot on I felt.

I was also greatful for all the in-house references (that only we the die-hard fans could understand).

The only negative I felt, like everybody else here has already stated, was the whole willing-to-kill-Chloe-in-order-to-stop-Brainic thing. That was way out of character for the Legion, but I guess some tweeking is required in order to fit such a huge story into a one hour episode.
LOL, I imagine the Legionnaries, before meeting Clark in this episode, running around the 31st century killing foes with ease as they fight for truth and justice! [Big Grin]
Oh well.

All in all a good episode (and way past due). This will get fans talking and hopefully wanting to learn more about these heroes of the future.

It was a fun episode for sure and well worth the wait.
I certainly hope we see them again.

i guess i'm the only one that didn't get miffed on the whole "Kill Chloe to save the world and the future" *i guess it's the old Needs of the many out weight the needs of the few scenerio* we really didn't know how long the Legion had been together since Smallville doesn't really follow DCU continuity at all. so for all we know the Legion could've been together maybe a few years and never had to face a challenge like this i'm sure killing to them was only a last resort measure, untill they met Kal/Clark and he taught them a better way.
other than that i must say it was the best episode of Smallville in a long while. (i still think the show should've ended a few years back)love how each Legionnaire was portrayed and the Pursader cameo was awesome!! and it was good to see that they left Kal/Clark a ring, maybe since i hear that there will be one more season maybe he'll pay a visit to the 31st century.

I don't really know much about Smallville, but I enjoyed it yesterday-- except for the ads.

My reaction to the character changes was similar to my first reaction when I first saw the cartoon last summer-- yeah, it's not the Legion I remember, entirely. But it is the characters as written, the acting was competent, the costumes were cute, and the story held my attention.

The core sentiment of the original was there. I had no problems with Clark being the one who persuaded his "followers" that killing his friend was out of the question. They kept hitting on the idea that while the Legion wanted to emulate their hero, there was a lot of his history that was lost to them. Once he set an example, they followed it. So it made sense and added some dramatic tension that wouldn't have been there otherwise.

mr_cleome has no history with anything Legion, but he totally picked up on the "You talk like a Sub" bit. I've been bringing him up to speed since we started watching the animated series.

Oh, the wonders of fan and/or Wiki-fueled crash courses ! [grin]

Is it just me, or did there seem to be an awful lot of closeups in this episode? There were times when I felt like I could almost count the nose hairs. It seemed like half people's faces were cut off.

Other than that, I liked the episode. It made me hope that we'll see the Legion return at some point, maybe with different members. I'd love to see the Fatal Five escape back in time, and have several Legionnaires travel back to stop them. Some of the Legion's powers would be easy (and relatively cheap) to replicate, like Shadow Lass, Triplicate Girl, Brainiac Five, people like that.

Posted by cleome on :

Unfortunately, I agree with others who've mentioned that TV budgets would tend to make most powers look not-so-great. Then again, movies with huge budgets for special effects tend to wallow in said effects at the expense of character and a decent plot. Too bad we can't split the difference. :/

TI actually enjoyed the Legion ep. a great deal. I too was bugged by the Chloe solution, but there was a genuine heistency in both Garth and Rokk to carry out the deed. I thought Clark's issuance of the Legion's prime directive worked very well.

We have to recall, I think, that the average Smallville viewer does not carry the continuity or emotional baggage that we do here on Legion World. Having the founders play the Star Boy role v. Kenz Nuhor was a great way to introduce the "no kill" concept and to have Clark directly inspire the Legion.

Recall also that, knowing Brainiac was defeated on the day of their visit, and not knowing Chloe, the Legion must have assumed she was killed. I read some of their willingness to kill Chloe, despite their hesitancy, to be a belief that it had to be done to keep the timeline intact.

Some random thoughts:
I thought all of the actors were great. The actress playing Imra clearly went with the Ice Queen portrayal. I'm sure if she appears again her inate hussyness will come out. I got a real sense of gravitas from Rokk (Garth called him Cos at one point). Garth was obviously played as comic relief, but I found the portrayal very much in keeping with the Live Wire version of the character.

I do find it hard to see this Imra hooking up with this Garth. She seems MUCH more suited to this Rokk. However, that, I think, just oozes possibilities for a "founder's triangle."

I loved all the litte touches, although I wonder if the average viewer got the line, "You're such a sub." I did miss the referene to a Levitz Museum, although I did catch Tharr (glad Johns remembered its a desert world, not a frozen one), plus "sprock" and "grife."

If I had my way, here's what'd happen next:

Clark faces off against Doomsday, gets clobbered, and, in the final ep. of the season, uses his flight ring to escape, with Chloe in tow, to the 31st century.

The entire next season (or two) is set in the Legion's time, with the Legionnaires appearing as series regulars as they teach Clark how to use his powers effectively. Sure, we lose Lois and Lana, but there would be plenty of love interests on the Legion for both Clark and Chloe.

Chloe is not remembered in the history books, of course, becasue she'll stay behing in the 31st century when Clark is finally ready to fight Doomsday, returning to the present seconds after he left, in costume for the first time.

I'm just watching it now, but a couple of early observations:
- the rings look *cool*! [I want one now]
- never been a huge Imra fan, and she has the wrong... er... 'bits', but damn, she's hot! Leather suits her (I always thought she was a little kinky)
- Rokk looks very good, liking the leather on him, and the little references to his traditional costumes. Nice touch. Very much the cool, calm leader, and fanboy Garth fits into that nicely.

My reaction was probably closer to Trom's than the rest of you, but I don't know that I blame Johns, I think I blame Smallville. I haven't watched this show regularly in years, and I've figured out why. It's just NOT Superman. When the show started, I thought Welling made a great Clark -- clearly on the way to being Superman physically, but having to go through adolescence to get there. My problem with the show is that the Welling Clark is whinier now by far than in season 1. And he's what, in his 40s now? And the way the characters interract and emote -- ughh! Do twentysomethings find this enjoyable and relatable? While the Legion's willingness to kill Chloe bothered me, it did so mainly because it belied their devotion to emulating Superman. If they were such great fans, how could they even consider it. Even if they DID consider it, it would have to be in the context of "Clark, we're asking you to violate everything we believe you will come to stand for." Therefore, they should have immediately realized, to protect the future history of Superman, THEY had to kill Chloe, not Clark. Johns basically get the characters to that point, but they should NEVER have been pressuring Clark to kill her in the first place. Then, when Welling's Clark really got around to taking his stand on the matter, he does it in his low-key whiny way that has zero resonance with the character of Superman and no inspirational value whatsoever. I wouldn't have been surprised if Cos didn't say afterward "Clark, you're such a whiny-ass titty baby, we're gonna go back to the future and kill, kill, kill! See ya, wouldn't wanna be ya."

Having said all that, the Legion WAS really fun and otherwise well-portrayed. I liked all the actors, though I agree I kept expecting Lightning Lad to say "that, Hermione, is wizard's chess." But he was cute, and the most entertaining of the bunch. Imra WAS the Iron Butt, wasn't she? Her confrontation with Lana, while pointless to the plot, came closest in my mind to examining the kill/don't kill issue in a good way. Of the 3 founders, Imra is the MOST likely to kill if she has to, because she has the best judgement, and is willing to bear the consequences. The use of powers was restrained, but good and even innovative, with the cleansing of Brainiac a real high point. It was only then, too, that Welling's Clark acted like Superman.

Again, it's hard to know how much to blame Johns, and how much to blame Smallville's producers, or Welling's acting.

A perennial problem with Smallville is that it seems like once an episode, like clockwork, Clark says 'That isn't going to happen.' or 'I'll stop it.' and then, he never does.

Sample dialogue from the end of last season;
Chloe - "Clark, they have a machine that will control you! If Lex gets his hand on it..."

Clark - "I won't allow that to happen! And by 'won't allow that' I mean, 'won't do a damn thing to stop it' other than show you my determined face and then go back to moping over Lana and ignoring huge impending crisis until someone gets hurt and it's all my fault again."

It's a soap opera. Clark is allowed to talk a good fight, but he's never allowed to actually be proactive and do anything decisive. Posture, pose, determined face. Get ass kicked. Get ass saved by Jor-El, Martian Manhunter, the discovery of a new super-power or some other random Deus Ex Machina.

Note what happens in this episode.

Clark - "We'll save her, by working together! And when I say 'we' I mean you. Lightning Lad, do something with lightning! Cosmic Boy, magno-whatzit the nanites! Saturn Girl, mind-mojo the framistat! I'll stand her with my Kryptonian thumb up my Kryptonian butt and pout really, really hard. Then I'll sign a baseball with heat vision! That'll fix everything!"

have to agree, i want to think that Brainy would be happier with the ball

if we go by real continuity, brainiac 5 should be in the legion....every version brainy had made the rings...they all had flight rings...so brainy should be a member. of the legion.

sides we all know that that ball is going to end up as Pulsar Stargrave

Do they call the Legionnaires by their codenames or their real names in Smallville?

Rokk addressed Garth as Lightning Lad once and Garth addressed Rokk as Cos once. Imra was called "Im" once, which is new to me.

jimg,

They did a good job of mixing them in. As they first appear, they use their real names, but out in "public" later (there's nobody there), Rokk calls Garth "Lightning Lad" in a disapproving way, sort of like when your mom uses your full name when she discovers you've done something you ought not to have. It was cute. It was fun to hear "Imra" and even "Im" used in a totally un-selfconscious way.

My 2 cents.

Overall I liked the episode very much. It was a long time coming, and I had to wait till after work to watch a recorded version, but I liked it.

First of all, I have the same objection many of you have. The Legion would not kill. Perhaps in the future of this incarnation, Superman ends up killing Doomsday to save someone he loves, and they based it all on this. I don't know what Johns' thinking was, but to the majority of fans, it was just wrong. I also thought Clark was just a little too quick in accepting the Legionnaires, but I chalked it up to the fact that he wants super-powered pals, and just wants to belong.

It didn't take long to figure out this was the Action Comics Legion, based on the comments of xenophobia. I did like the way I wondered "are they going to mention Earth Man?" They didn't of course, but it made me want to see more.

It was obvious that Rokk was the leader, and that he was clearly older than the other two. I'd put him at about 18-19, calm and in charge. Imra was about 17 was a calming influence, and incidentally, smoking hot. Garth was about 15-16 and impetuous. They were clearly friends and had been together lon enough to refer to each other as "Im" and "Cos."

I wanted to see more of the Persuader too. Granted he's never been one for great dialogue, but he was dispatched just a little too quickly. Also, if he used the flight ring to travel through time, and Rokk took it away from him, how did he get sent back? Was there a ripcord of some sort?

I, too, liked the 30th-31st century lingo, and the references we would get. Tharr, grife, sprock, Levitz Museum (Why not Superman Museum?).

I liked the way Rokk called Garth "Lightning Lad" once, when he was trying to talk to him as a leader to a subordinate. Garth also called him "Cos" once, but alas, no "Saturn Girl" references.

Rather than think -

I saw it more as Clark being a leader, and reminiscent of Adv. 247, he figured out a way to use each of their powers in a new way. Just my take.

Overall, I was just very happy to actually see a live action Legion. It has been TOOOOO long coming. I can see more potential for their return than the contrived Justice League.

I'm not making excuses and saying "It's all good," I'm saying, for the first live action Legion, Not Bad.

No you're not, if you are referring to THE original. My first exposure to IK was the "cloning" story in S/LSH with IK and Ferro Lad. I thought he was a cool character and was one of the reasons I started getting back issues.

Has anyone mentioned that Garth said he "joined" the Legion and not "founded" the Legion?

The Legion willing to kill was unacceptable to me. You guys are way too forgiving. Even Quis came up with a more creative angsty way of providing tension. (I know it was so Clark would be the one to provide Legion Code No. 1 and all that, but they could have been more creative without violating the characters.)

I'd have preferred this to be a stand alone episode and just been a fun initiation adventure.

Great to see a live-action Legion! Too bad there has to be so many exceptions.

This also would have been far greater if this was season one. They could have made a Legion visit an annual event. Upping the ante each time. And if Star Trek, Farscape, etc. can afford to future it up on TV, then so could the WB/CW.

I didn't really care for the Persuader being a 'supremest' but it isn't the first time that the idea of xenophobic groups have been shown in the 31st century.
Triad was almost killed by members of the White Triangle, Trom was destroyed by a Daxamite faction and Andromeda, being an underground member of WT finally switched sides, helped defeat them and then joined a holy order in penence.

I was protesting the willingness to kill Chloe, too, but NOT killing becoming part of the Legion code because of what Clark taught them silenced me.
The idea of not killing any old time you want has been under attack in comics for at least the last 20 years.
The recent crossover, DREAMWARS, hi-lights that conflict.
And in our world, killing is the simple answer to a lot of people's problems.
I'm glad the story involving the Legion made a stand against the constant 'bloodworks' around us.

Tom Welling is 29.
The character he plays is now in his early twenties, I believe.
Lana and Chloe graduated from college, didn't they?
I remember Brianiac being introduced during those years.

Anyway, I like Welling and I've enjoyed this last couple of seasons of Smallville, especially.

The Legion was so much fun to watch.
I got the feeling from the characters that the Legion in this universe isn't in it's mostly teenage era,but not yet in Johns era, either.

Rokk and Imra seemed in their very late teens or early twenties.
Garth was younger, of course, but that was fine with me.
He reminded me a little of Gates when he was in our time period, owwwing and ahhhing over stuff, wanting to collect it.

I thought there were to many close-ups, as well, lol!
And to much make-up!
It takes a lot to make Lana's features look generic but they managed it!

I love Chloe.
She was fantastic and I'm so glad she has her 'Kal' memories back!

Someone thought that she should go to the future.
But if she did that what would happen to Jimmy?
I kind of like that she's married to him.

I SO want to see the Legion in Smallville again.
Shadow Lass would be wonderful!

In Sanctuary, all of the sets are computer generated. They say it's cheaper than regular filming.

Last comment.
Did anyone else love the part where Garth asked Clark why they were having the conversion on the ground rather than in the air?
Clark said he couldn't fly.
Garth's and Rokk's reactions were so funny and so spot on!
Loved it.
Sounds like something that would work very well for a Legion series.

just watched it!!! so awesome.

yeah garth said joined not formed or founded.

i couldn't get over how blood thirsty the founders were either. maybe they are one of the dark future legions. and then..it didn't seem that hard for them to "exorcise" brainiac haha. rokk didn't even sweat.

i did love the fight scenes and imra especially. she was cool and not catty. and i never realized how catty it could be to be a telepath before watching this episode. she was all business but still warm. i loved how garth and imra spoke a bit slowly, made them seem more formal and different. i couldn't get over cosmic boy's hair...too long for him.

oh and imra can trash talk...."your sadism is legendary...and so is your defeat" yeahhh beyotch.

it's kinda funny how the founders were for continuity!!! haha "we've never heard of chloe"

i'm also sick of the xenophobia plot...and to make it a part of television history is gross.
can we get a generalized legion or amalgam not include a sentence that is sooo determinative of which type of legion this is!

i was on the edge of my seat waiting for them to say "fatal five" during the persuader scene. and i thought that clark would dodge the axe but...he dosn't know it can hurt him...and then i'm thinking it's gonna cut him in half!! very tense.

i liked their slant on garth, socially awkward and impetuous rather than hot headed. but i guess they made him out to be a newbie in this episode.

great action episode...

oh and btw, i've never ever watched smallville before. i think i might start watching it, so many shirtless boys too.

one more thing, isn't it kinda depressing to have the legion meet kal el because of an assassination attempt and they try to sacrifice his best friend.

must be a dark and random future.

i think the legion will be back on smallville(somebody has to teach him to fly)...and hopefully a bit more well...hopeful.

i'm really not weirded out that the legion would be kill-friendly at first! i mean... they're practically COPS. and if a cop had to kill someone, you wouldn't think it was weird! sad but not weird, you know? i guess i'm cold hearted but... chloe sullivan's life vs everyone on the planet dying?!! come on, guys! even chloe, i'm sure, would have sacrificed herself!

personally, i see the "we don't kill" thing in general as a writing necessity, one of the mainstays in comics is that you need some reason why superman doesn't just snap lex luthor's neck or why no one in gotham will ever get the death penalty when obviously in for reals land, they would. it's because they want the bad guys to come back and fight again, guys.

...and it was very clear that when it came down to it, none of them were enjoying the task! i thought the part where they actually had to DO the deed was very powerful and well done! notice that they were going to use a frigging KNIFE to make it more visceral. (though secretly i was going 'guys, there are less horrible ways...). did i miss a reason for stab-specific death?

GOD the look on cos' face!! holy CRAP, that guy made me think cos was going to cry a little, did anyone see those slightly watery eyes?!! and poor, adorable, nerd-garth ;____;!! oh my god.

imra apparently raided the bathroom for eyeshadow while the boys put the barn back together.

man... i would NOT mind a million more episodes with these guys. that is the most wide open door to more episodes i've EVER seen!!

"HERE'S THIS RING. COME VISIT ANYTIME."

"ANYTIME YOU WANT, AT ANY MOMENT."

"YOU COULD MEET ALL THE OTHER LEGIONNAIRES."

"LIKE, IDK, BRAINIAC 5?!!"

-----

man. i screamed happily the whole frigging episode. tiny throw away lines that made me FREAK OUT but that wouldn't seem out of place ("it's for my sister").

vv, you crack me up!

I liked seeing a live action Legion very much, and I thought the story was very good.

I figured the Legion was willing to kill because history told them that that's what was needed. I liked that they couldn't actually do it and I liked that Supes was the boy scout.

I've never watched Smallville before and I probably won't again. Not because it was bad, but because I watch enough other shows.

I liked Cos' portrayal very much. No complaints.

Imra seemed to speak like she had too many teeth in her mouth or something. It was wierd. Still, she was very cute.

I'm not sure I like a goofy, silly Garth. It takes some getting used to. I almost wish it was Cham or someone else in that role. Or that it was the slick, cool Garth.

Overall, I was pleased. I recorded it. I'll watch it again sometime.

Yeah, the one that somebody at Major Spoilers called "Eddie Bauer Meets Elvis" or words to that effect.

Cham's probably switched agencies since the cartoons. I mean, first getting voiced by some Fox soap guy on his smoke break, then getting turned into Beast Boy without the fangs. You can hardly blame him. [grin]

I enjoyed the episode quite a bit and have no significant complaint about it--beyond the simple fact that I want MORE!!!!!

The more I think about the 'kill solution' the Legionnaires thought was best, the more I'm okay with the reasoning behind it. I mean, history told them that Brainiac absolutely HAD to be "destroyed" on that day or there would be no future left for them to return to.

So they meet Clark and he's nothing like what they expected: he can't fly, there's no costume...in short, he's not fully-formed on a day that they feel is crucial in their history. So with everything riding on what will happen that day, the Legion feel that if they don't destroy Brainiac by killing Chloe, everything they know will end. Even so, they are shown reluctant to carry through and are clearly not used to using lethal force. Those moments sold it for me.

It's kinda like whether or not, if given the opportunity, you would kill Hitler's mom while he's in utero, except on a much larger scale. Even Chloe at the end tells Clark that she would expect him to kill her if the stakes were this high again and no other option presented itself.

So I felt the scenario was very nicely done, and I especially like how Clark was able to inspire them so profoundly in a way that even his legend wasn't able to. Clark didn't measure up to their impossibly high expectations. But at the same time, he actually ended up exceeding them!

I was quite moved by that take. Even though it's not "classic Silver Age" Legion meets Superboy, it was a nice modern take and ultimately, I felt, true to both the Superman and Legion mythos.

Some more notes.....

Of the three, I felt Rokk rang the most true of the three. Yes, the hair was not the clean-cut look we're used to for Cos, but the attitude, the leadership and the maturity were all absolutely spot-on. This was most definitely Rokk Krinn, my friends, and the actor who played him did a great job.

I also enjoyed Imra and Garth quite a bit. Neither really came off as authentically for me as Rokk, but I enjoyed them nonetheless. Imra didn't really contradict the comics version exactly, but there was something off I couldn't put my finger on. Garth's personality was a little more of a classic Polar Boy/threeboot Tinya as far as the starstruck aspect goes. I still enjoyed the take regardless and can see this Garth eventually becoming more like the one(s) we all know and love.

I haven't watched Smallville regularly in a long time. I was onboard the first three seasons (in fact the second half of season one thru the first half of season three I felt were absolutely outstanding) but felt it was going off the rails so badly at the end of season three that I've only rarely caught a stray episode ever since. I may just make a point to catch a few more episodes now.

I feel that if the show is brought back for another season, we will almost certainly get another Legion appearance. So...here's to one more season!!!

I really liked it.

I didn't take the Legion "almost" killing to serious. I don't think they could've done it regardless. It reminded me of an old Adv. comic plot.

I would've like Cos less grungy but it fits the show. Infact everything kind of fit.

I've seen Smallville try to incorporate some comic book characters and I have to say this was one of the better ones.

Would love to see Clark visit the 31st century.

You know...I've not really liked smallville since the first couple of "comic integration" episodes with other heroes. I loved this episode for what it was and regardless of my little gripes here and there as well as what everyone said already I think it was probably one of smallville's better episodes.

The episode stands up to repeated viewings. I've now watched it 3 times and it's fun each time. You sort of catch those little thing you missed the first time around. The look on Imra's face as she nods to Cosmic Boy to "do the deed" since obviously Garth can't do it (stabbing Chloe). I missed the "Levitz museum" nod the first time around. This was a nice tribute to Levitz and it shows us that Johns admires him a lot.
Getting back to that huge negative about the show... I really didn't like the fact that Cos was about to finish the job, the knife was heading straight down into Chloe's chest, and if Clark hadn't stopped him just when he did it would have been all over. I think we needed to see a bit more hesitation and debate about "the right thing to do" or "what needs to be done" before Garth voluntarily agrees to do it.
Like I said earlier, it's only a one hour show and you need that drama and a climax to push the plot forward, but still it vilified our heroes to the viewing audience a bit. Hopefully this didn't spoil their presence on the show to the fans of Smallville too much. It has such a vast veiwership and is one of the most watched television shows out today.
If this episode hits the high ratings that I suspect it will, not only will we see the Legion again (if there's a season 9) but the interest with the sci-fi fans around the globe is sure to do wonders in helping future comic sales for any book with the words 'Legion Of Super-Heroes' attached to it.

This helps us fanatics quite a bit though, right?

As for the actors involved I think they played their parts perfectly (and did a little homework on the Legion I suspect).
I had some reservations at first seeing the promo clips and pics last year, just like everybody else on here, but really the kids did an awesome job showing us a glimps of who the Legion is and what they're all about. They all looked and acted well too (well, maybe just a bit too much eye shadow on Imra in the last 15 minutes of the show) ;-)

Too bad this wasn't a 2-hour or two-part special or something! Oh well ... maybe next time.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned here yet that I thought I would see is the omission of the "of Superheroes" from the Legion in the episode. Obviously, it makes sense in the Smallville-verse, but seeing as how there's typically so much nit-picking among our fandom, it's a little surprising it hasn't been brought up.

Personally, I've no problem with the omission. But I'm very surprised that hasn't been among the gripes brought up in this thread.

I enjoyed it as well.

The intent to kill was pretty bothersome to me, as it was to many, apparently. I figured that I would have been okay with it if they had played-up the billions-will-die-very-soon or the Chloe-is-already-dead rationals a bit more than they did. Otherwise, it was still a quick and depict-able way of showing how important Superman is to what the legion becomes. (Saying the inspiration is tolerance of other races is one thing, but it wouldn't have been easy to depict--especially given how human legionnaires look and the likely budget constraints.)

I'd love to see more of the legion on TV, but I suspect it would be a whole lot of teens staring at each other--like this episode--just because of how costly a lot of action would be. I think I'd prefer a mini-series, though. Full-blown series seem to need to inflate number of useless scenes more than I can tolerate.

My favorite part was seeing the flight rings. I don't know why that struck such a chord, but it did.

A lot said so far, but if ever there was a topic just asking for everyone to say what they think, this is it...

Quick summary of my own feelings: had I gotten a chance to post right afterward, I'd have started out mentioning that I had just...well, to clean it up... "arrived in my trousers."

Let me first follow that with this: I am one of the BIGGEST fans of the code against killing. 10 or so years back, when I was still posting on the 'rec.arts' NG, I was the one who started the "Inferno Defamation League" because I was SO afraid they would let her join after she had been shown to kill in cold blood.

HOWEVER, saying that the code is intrinsic to the legion *and* that it should have been there ALREADY is to treat the LSH as a static entity. The code had to start SOMETIME, and I think it is a little ABSURD to think that three adolescents who just started a superhero team would think of that first thing...I think it is much more realistic that something or someone would need to convince them of it.

ALSO, with only 1 hour, they had little time to establish many aspects of the LSH, so the fact that, IN THE END, they adopted that code means that the code against killing is one of the FEW aspects of the LSH that WAS established by this episode!!! I mean, I'm happier that they established it as STARTING now then just not even mentioning it at all.

ALSO, consider that BRAINIAC was literally like a disease/virus...it "leaked" its way into everything (even Chloe), so their thinking was much along the lines of the practice of containing a horrible disease...only this was a SENTIENT such disease bent on world destruction, which might even become GALACTIC destruction...

My only gripe in that area was I'd have liked to see a BIT more reluctance from Cos before he started the knife plunge...but then, there's only so much time in the episode.

Note also, based on the comment at the end about B5, we can presume this was early in the LSH's career.

(Note: while I do agree with what others said that it would be better to think that B5 already existed...esp. given that they have their flight rings... the exact wording is rather inescapable: "Let's hope Brainiac *5* is a little more friendly."... if they had meant to say Brainiac 5 would enjoy it as a project, they could have just said "I'm sure Brainiac 5 will be able to program it into something useful", or they'd have at least added the word "now" to the end of the first sentence. I suppose we COULD interpret it as Brainiac 4 exists, made the flight rings, but is grumpy(!))

Finally, let me just say how pleased I was that they basically went what I would call "balls out" and REALLY gave us the Legion. Other aspects of comicdom that have been incorporated into the show have usually been distant facsimiles (Brainiac being one, "cyborg" being another... Black Canary... the Flash .. Perry White ... etc.)

When I first heard they'd have an episode with the Legion, I thought we'd see three mysterious teens who help him, and only suggest at the end that they are from the future.

Instead, they DECLARE themselves as being "the Legion" ..they mention explicitly when they are from and what they do...used some CODE NAMES, and real names also ... and even had uniforms, appropriately de-cheesified...and Legion FLIGHT RINGS, complete with the L symbol (borrowed from a comic shop?) As someone who watches the show all the time, this went way beyond my expectations as to how fully they'd depict the LSH.

I *loved* giddy Garth (I guess you can say "ass" on TV now, a la "Get that magnet out of your ass"), embarrassed Rokk ("Garth, you're acting like a sub"), cerebral, semi-spacey Imra (I think it makes sense for her to be that way ... always distracted by hearing everyone's thoughts...).

Then, they top it off by establishing the existence of OTHERS in the Legion (and a mention of B5, regardless of chronology), and leaving Clark a way to go to he future...man!!! I thought there was no WAY that would happen.

If they keep up to a season 9 and run out of plot ideas...there it is. Notably, the show DOES have a tendency to re-visit plotlines form earlier episodes, so I'd not be surprised to see an ep. where he DOES go to the future....probably in dire need, I'd suspect. Whereupon, they'd probably re-hash the old "sorry, can't change the past" plot.... but still, we might get to see other legionnaires.

Don't know if anyone's mentioned it, but the actress who played Imra used to play Annie on So Weird. Going from someone interested in the paranormal to someone who was telepathic didn't seem like much of a stretch. It was pretty nice for So Weird fans. Almost couldn't recognize her though, so it's been a while that So Weird was off the air.

Would have liked the three Legion members to be more of an equal age. Cos seemed much older than everyone else.

The part about them wanting to kill bothered me a bit too, but only until they decided afterwards that would end up being their first Legion rule (not to kill).

Couldn't help wondering what Imra was hinting with in regards to Lana and why she left. My first thought was she'd gone 7 months and it was after last season, maybe a few months after she gained Clark's powers and the two were shaking up all of Smallville. Maybe she was pregnant. Then I remembered that would have been Lois's job as per the latest movie. Thought it over again and decided if the Legion was saying it, maybe they were just referring to Lana getting powers in some way and being a hero in her own right. I think she was supposed to be an honorary Legionaire in the earlier comic book version.

Interesting to see the use of Legion curse words, since they never made the animated series. Obviously it's an older audience.

Liked the reference to no one hearing of Chloe as most fans of other versions of Superman would not have. Would have liked an explanation why though.

Liked the combined powers of Cos and Lightning Lad. Would have liked to see Cos less serious and Lightning Lad slightly more serious (maybe more grown up). Nice that Garth was excited as a fan would be and it was cute of him to mention his sister. Obviously she isn't missing like she was in the animated series.

Someone mentioned Persuader disappearing when the ring was removed. Common sci fi plot is that when you remove the device keeping you in that time, you end up back where you were in your own time. That only left me wondering why the Legion went home after saying Long Live the Legion instead of by temporarily taking off the rings. I guess the rings really are thought controlled and they just had to think about home.

Liked all the touches where they kept up with Legion continuity and the long live the Legion shout at the end. Also liked seeing the Brainiac symbol.

Didn't like the portrayal of the bad guys much in this episode. For me, that was the part I didn't like the most. Anyone else notice Chloe's eyes seemed to get darker and darker circles the longer Brainiac took her over. Looked more like she had been crying and messing up her wedding makeup. Half expected Brainiac to download data to people's brains for storage rather than upload to himself. Is Earth really that rich in data? Going after each person's brain instead of just tapping the Internet or the Library of Congress seemed like a waste of time, especially since Brainiac hasn't bothered to do any of that data accessing accept when really necessary all the time he's been on Earth.

The reference to creating Brainiac 5 from Brainiac threw me as well. So who were 2 through 4 and how did the Legion know about that, but not about Clark's unwillingness to kill? Let's see, 4 would have been Chloe and she's blond. Does that make her Brainiac 5's mom? The 2nd incarnation had to be the female lab assistant in Lex's lab that Brainiac took over. The first was probably professor Fine's form. Lana couldn't be the third, could she? He took her over, but he was off with Kara, so I wouldn't consider that inhabiting her. Who was third? Liked a reference to Brainiac 5, but would have preferred they gave the program to Brainiac 5 to deal with (like Brainiac on the Watchtower in Static Shock episode), not that he'd be useful in creating Brainiac 5. Wanted more info on how this would play out and we just didn't get it.

I doubt we'll see Smallville go to the future because of budget constraints, but it's nice they left the door open. Sounds like Lana convinced Clark they have to work out their own problems and not bug the future for answers though. Would be nice to see Legion members guest in the future the way Justice League members sometimes do though.

I really hope this episode on Smallville means we'll see more interest in the Legion from other fans out there.

Rokk so hot... Garth so not.

The biggest thing I took away from the show was the definitive pronounciation of Winath as Why-nath... I've been pronouncing it Win-ath for over 30 years... I don't think I can break the habit now.

I wish Garth had mentioned Ayla by name so that one could be settled once and for all. I say Eh-lah not Eye-lah.

Ok, thanks for that. I guess that must be a newer plot device I haven't seen. Also, when they gave Clark the ring, Imra told him "just think of 3009," meaning concentrate on being there and he would. At least that's my take.

i've always said win-ath too! i still prefer win-ath.

and i noticed chloe's make up getting darker and darker...i thought she was gonna end up green (ish) at the end of the episode.

now that i'm thinking about it, some of those old adv stories were kinda fracked up. a good amount of people died (maybe more so than current eras), some stories were just bizarre, they fought in wars, exorcisms etc....(they were drawn so innocently that it took the edge off though, no gore)

maybe its not SOOOOO out there to think of them going to defcon one so quickly. but i doubt the writers were thinking of this as they wrote...probably were just writing for effect. (but the characters were mainly true to type)

secretly?! secretly, i hope to one day write the legion. *gross, i know*. but in order to get around the "winath" pronunciation thing i would say that... winathi could easily be an inflected language!! so... pronounced differently for different purposes in a sentence!!

ANYWAYS THAT'S WHAT I WAS IMMEDIATELY THINKING WHEN HE PRONOUNCED IT THAT WAY. *suicide from nerd shame*

the word 'superheroes" is reeeeeallly embarrassing to me so i prefer the non-OSH part of LOSH. not so bad in print but hearing it verbalized is like "OHHH GOD". anything to lure more people to the legion-nerd side!! COME TO ME, NEW FANS!!

It may be the least discussed open Legion secret of the Silver Age: Click Here For A SpoilerAlthough he did it to save the life of the girl he loved, along with the lives of all the rest of his Legion friends, Lightning Lad DID KILL Zaryan the Conqueror. Subsequently, Garth Ranzz never suffered any ramifications for his justifiable actions. Therefore, originally, the Legion Code did sanction killing when unavoidable (however, it could have been argued that since the Legion Leader had just suspended him for a month, Garth was acting on his own accord and not as a Legionnaire).

Thus their reaction to this aspect of the plot was not too troubling nor out of character for the Legionnaires. Overall, the xenophobia angle seemed more out of place. Still, it was highly entertaining and inspires hope for a Legion spin-off...

I found it to be an enjoyable hour on the whole. Not perfect, but I expect I will watch it again.

The big question in my mind after watching was "How exactly did Brainiac's defeat become such a famous event?" Do people remember being taken over? I don't watch Smallville, but it was clear that Clark is not a public figure - he doesn't yet wear a costume, his status as a superhuman is not widely known. Is Brainiac's existence publicly known within the Smallvilleverse?
So, my beef is that the consequences (for anyone beyond the principals) of the events of this story have been completely ignored. Perhaps something will be done with this in subsequent episodes, but I'm not likely to be watching.

One more thing: the Legionnaires did end up changing history. When they arrived, they said that Clark was supposed to defeat Brainiac by sending it into the Phantom Zone; but at the end, they took Brainiac with them to the 31st century!

I want to credit some of the directorial decisions we saw (Mr. Johns could be responsible for some of these as well; the roles of director and writer do often mesh on the set).
Opening establishing shot tips the entire ep via the wedding banner(a very Shakespearean way to begin, e.g. Hamlet). No banter twixt Kal and the Persuader made the action seem more severe. The first hint of the Legionnaires being on TV at last is NOT the expected head or group shot but rather a visualization of one of the heroes' powers! And the focus going straight to the ring on Cos' hand was brilliantly fan-firendly-tastic!
Note in the first formal appearance that the scene is shot such that we are looking UP to the Legion members from Clark's perspective, which I took as a subtle homage to events in the comics.
The action count roughly mirrors what we got in the Adv. series: twice using powers for battle and once in a humanitarian effort;(Garth "throws" bolts while Cos "shapes" the magetic fields and Imra gives the obligatory "salute to the temple." )
We even got a brief glimpse of the three aloft and the ground-level shot of boots meeting turf was an effective way to simulate them landing within the constraints of a "no flights" budget policy.
They exited in a flare of nostalgia and notice that they were all looking up. Very nice!
I found it an excellent effort that reflected a great deal of care for the fans of the Legion in all their scenes. Long Live the Legion indeed!

This makes me really like Rokk. Probably my favourite portrayal of him yet. This whole episode came off better than I expected.

DC should have re-issued the Legion ring to go with this episode. It looked really cool throughout.

It seemed to imply that Earthlings have some superior respect for life that's absent from other planets' races, even in the 31st century. I'm all for Yay Earth! but this seemed sort of contributing to the xenophobia.

Next Legion episode - Brainiac 5 is a must!

The bit about 'they didn't have human parents' thing did fall a bit flat for me.

Yes, I know that *specifically* the Kents were awesome and it makes sense in that context. But that's not what was said in that line. What was said was that human parents were better than Braalian, Winathian or Titanian parents.

I take it as just a clunky line, and in my head convert it to praise for how the Kents raised Clark, not a slam at Titan-mom or Winath-dad.

I took it as, here were a group of teenagers with no parents. They were off as members of the Legion with no parental guidance. How would Clark and friends in Smallville know they had families of their own back in the 31st century? Clark didn't usually run off on missions (of his choosing) when he was in high school (in Smallville version anyway). I guess they assumed the Legion members wouldn't be off doing dangerous work if they were living at home with parents as their parents would be more protective of them.

I totally misread your comment. I thought you told vv to "Celibate" nerdhood. I almost laughed outloud until I reread the line and realized my mistake. [LOL]

It was his mistake, too. "Celebrate" is spelled C-E-L-E-B-R-A-T-E, NOT C-E-L-I-B-R-A-T-E.

I meant to weigh in after I watched it but got sidetracked. I pretty much thoroughly enjoyed the episode. I haven't watched the show on a regular basis since the 2 season or so, it's a little too teen-angsty drama for me but they throw the nerd in me a bone on occasion and this was definitely one of those occasions. I really liked the portrayal of all three Legionaires. I actually thought Clark influencing the Legion code against killing was a nice touch and tied him to the Legion a little more than just them being super-fans from the future or whatever. Couldn't really figure out why they didn't bring some future tech from the future to deal w/ Brainiac rather than using a knife but the show itself has a tendency to stymie Clark's abilities for the sake of the (again) teen angst-fuled plot.

Kinda wish the comic Legion wore outfits a little morelike the TV version.

He was originally in an android body as Milton Fine, as I recall. Clark destroyed that body at the end of the last season.

Brainiac seems to be able to live in computer form, too (Fortress of Solitude and in Lana's computer complex.

Computo might be a better name for this creation.

I'd sure like to see a sequel. It was a great moment when they invited Clark to the future. The mention of Brainiac 5 and "the rest of the Legion" gave me a feel good warm-fuzzy and makes me smile.

Maybe Lana will go.

Imra certainly said she had an important future apart from Clark.

And she has lots of power now, whatever they are.

I saw a preview for it last night, and I'm pretty sure I saw Cosmic Boy in it.

Edit:
According to IMBD, Rokk is listed in the cast for "Doomsday", the season finale. Also in the list are Impulse (Bart Allen), Green Arrow and Black Canary. Whether or not any other Legionnaires will appear, I don't know.

Yah, Lois got the ring and the future.
(What is it with Clark and that ring?!)

I'd actually love for Lois to become a superheroine ~ if Lana can, why not Lois?!

More significately, for me, Jimmy's gone, Chloe is going to live in one incredibly beautiful Watch Tower and Clark has made another bad decision about his life.

I thought DC was kind of pushing that Superman has an almost infallible sense of the right thing to do?
He certainly is having trouble with that concept this year on Smalville (he'snever really been very good at decisions on Smallville, really)!

I haven't seen that the Kryptonian half of Davis was any better or kinder than the human side of him.
Both were confused killers.

I also haven't seen in the series, that the Kryptonians show any signs of rejecting their emotions or living isolated lives.
We've seen Zod, Ursa, Lara, Kara, Kara's evil father and Kal's father(voice/thoughts).
There's not a single Vulcan in the bunch!

[Confused]

The last 2 episodes have also introduced some form of the Kandorians. At least that's how I've interpreted those very short plot moments.

I thought that Kara left Earth to try to find them ~ it looks like they found Earth first.

It would be nice if we could actually see Lois arriving in the 31st Century. Really, that could take up the entire hour. Do I remember correctly that someone on Legion World said that Brainiac 5 was going to appear?
Jimmy's death served no real purpose. It ended the human-Doomsday plot thread, but that could have been resolved in a number of ways. It also "outted" Clark to another one of his close friends, but was meaningless in the end. I guess it was just for shock value to boost ratings, rather that a commitment to good story-telling.
In all, though, it was the best episode I've seen in a while. I can't wait for next season!

I agree totally with all three of those statements!

And did you figure out what actually happened to Doomsday?
Clark ran him into a bomb or building or what?!

Those scenes were too dark and fast for my eyes to catch what happened.

Thanks for Tizzles and [Koko] !

Agreed with above about Jimmy's death. He didn't need to die. It seemed just like a cop out. You always know when someone will die when they find out about Clark's secret.

I'm also curious to find out what really happened to doomsday. It was waaaay to ambigous.

Also Lois in the 31st century is sweet. I always get so excited when I see the flight ring on Smallville. Coolest thing ever.

I watched it and... mm, Rokk. You're still mature with your sexy facial hair. [Big Grin]

As for the rest-- ehhh. I have mixed feelings. I mean, Click Here For A Spoilerthe Doomsday climax was a total cop out, which pissed me off to no end. And the Click Here For A Spoilerchick fight between Lois and that Mercer woman was pretty ridiculous and sort of offensive, even if it did make for a convenient plot device to Click Here For A Spoilersend Lois into the future. I agree that I want to see her there, by the by-- that'd be cool. And Brainy! Could be super awesome. I will admit that I did like the reveal that Click Here For A SpoilerSmallville's "Jimmy" Olsen is not the Jimmy from the comics but (most likely or at least implied a little to be) his older brother. This works especially well IMHO because it sort of validates his relationship with Chloe and friendships with Clark and Lois without tarnishing the essence of comic!Jimmy.

Also, I'm kind of embarrassed to admit it, but I really didn't "get" the ending. Click Here For A SpoilerWho is that guy that appears? Are we supposed to have any idea at all? What does that symbol mean? Ugh, I kind of don't care but I'm also annoyed by lingering curiosity. But whatever. I only watched to see sexy!Rokk, so I got what I really wanted in the first five minutes or so. [Wink]

By the by, remember when the three founders had no idea who Chloe was at all? Well, in keeping with comic mythology, I had a weird idea. What if something will happen a la the "silver age" Sentry so people, like, don't remember her or her contributions? That might be kinda cool. Or maybe she's got her own superheroine alias in the works. But, if that's the case, please let it be better than Stiletta. ><

Either way, that little factoid was curious to me and I hope there's some kind of payout with it. {Hey, a girl can dream, right?} Okay-- ramble off.

With Lois getting sent to the future a la the flight ring, we are guaranteed to at least see some elements of 31st century life with our intrepid future teens.
She will no doubt assume she's dreaming (thinking she must have fallen and hit her head or something) the entire time she's there, but seeing more Legionnaires will be totally cool.
Seeing Cos again in the episode's teaser was just that... a tease.
I want more!!!!

I wonder if the writers realize that they've mirrored the Silver Age with this bit? As much as I'd love to see the network jump right in to a Legion TV show it would also be incredibly cool if random Legionnaires were to pop up as plot gimmicks for a year or two just like in the classic Superboy stories.

Even as a kid I thought those were hokey but they were funny and offered a glimpse into something beyond the basics. The gimmicky plot device might even work better on the TV machine than in the books. I mean how cool would it be to have Jo Nah take a class with Clark at Metropolis JuCo?

HEY HEY HEY, I'm FAT.

period. Well, not really yet, but getting there...
gotta start watching what I eat...

ANYWAY, I have a MAJOR, MAJOR Question: Can anybody who was at the SD comic-con (or who has reliable first-hand info of such) tell me if the Smallville season 9 promo showed any evidence of the Legion appearing?

I have seen versions of it on youTube, but all are too murky. I see a flash of Persuader hitting Clark with his axe, but it looks like it's the scene from season 8.

What I *do* know is that Geoff Johns is writing an episode again for season 9, but it will focus on the JSA..hence, I am concerned that my hopes for more Legion may not come to fruition.

I read somewhere that there might be a scene of Lois in the future...anything LEgion-ish there? Also, there is a blurry scene with a super-powered woman facing off against Clark, which looks like it might have Garth in the background, but I can't tell.

I have searched the 'net, and found a lots of info
about season 9, but nothing mentions the Legion.

Anyone know of anything I might be missing?

thanks!!!

Just finished the Smallville commetary track of "Legion" with Johns. Nothing too astouding but he

Notes that the Legionnaires were originally meant to start fading away with pain ala "Back To The Future"

Wanted a coda set in the 31st Century with more Legionnaires

Wishes he could have written for Lois and Jimmy

Actually explains the "Sub" comment made by Rokk

Reveals he has the baseball signed by Clark for Garth at the end

Gives a shout out to Levitz

Wishes for more Legion episodes, but does not elaborate on the "Braniac Five" comment...

Well, I'm a little late to the party, but I finally watched the Legion ep of Smallville thanks to Netflix. Gotta say, I wasn't impressed.

First of all, the Legion's near eagerness to kill was incredibly out of character. Say what you want about early Adventure stories, but the Legion I've always known has been firmly against the taking of a life under almost any circumstances. And it wasn't just based on Superman's example; it was just because killing is wrong. I firmly believe that that's a core principle of the Legion and seeing the founders so ready to take a life without exploring other options turned me off totally. The fact that Garth and Rokk knew to disable Brainiac with an EMP, but didn't think to use a similar effect to remove or destroy it rang totally hollow to me. (Also, the shot of Clark stopping Rokk from stabbing Chloe was telegraphed so far in advance that I started wishing they'd just get on with it already so the story could get moving again.)

I was not thrilled by the casting of the Founders. Garth as awkward fanboy was totally lame. I'm all for seeing Garth display the kind of self-esteem issues that we saw in the early '80s (i.e. Garth coming to grips with the fact that he's just not the leader that either Rokk or Imra are), but to see him as the apparent novice next to the other two was really grating. The actor playing Rokk couldn't have been stiffer if he'd been dipped in plaster. Did that guy even smile once? I know Rokk has a kind of stodgy image with some Legion fans, but my earliest exposures to Rokk were in the Grell bustier (no pun intended on "exposures"). I just can't see a guy who would wear that costume as being that humorless and uptight. I thought the actress playing Imra was totally wrong for the part. Partly it was the makeup job, but honestly she was just too cutesy. I've never seen Imra as cute. She looked like a cheerleader when she should have come across as class president.

Persuader's appearance was fun, but how much cooler would the Legion's appearance on the show have been if this had been a one-off episode of them chasing the Fatal Five into the 21st century? Run it after the Brainiac arc was totally over and feature Brainiac 5 in the story as a tension point with Clark and bring another Legionnaire or two along for the ride. That would have entertained me far more than the three founders jumping to murder as the first solution to a problem.

I don't know. Call it an Elseworlds Legion if you like, but they sure weren't any Legion I recognized beyond the names and powers.

Posted by future king on :

Has anybody heard of any more Legion appearances for this final season? I read the Smallville website and they only give teasers for the first 6/7 episodes or so, nothing on the Legion yet. With it being the final season I hope they don't forget the Legion and their importance to Kal-El's development into Superman.

Posted by He Who Wanders on :

I have to say that Director Lad's post makes a lot of sense. He's particularly right that the Legion should have a core principle of not killing regardless of their association with Superman. (I did think it worked within the context of the story, however, that the Legion came to understand that they shouldn't kill because of Clark; it provided a nice character arc and illustrated the impact Clark has and continues to have on the Legion.)

Yes, it's an "elseworlds" Legion, just as Smallville is an "elseworlds" version of Superman. I'm so used to TV shows and movies changing aspects of source material that I could accept the Smallville LSH for what it was. The fanboy in me is thrilled when the Legion gets any kind of film exposure at all, and, in truth, the Smallville depiction wasn't bad, though it's not what we're used to. In some ways, Smallville LSH seemed truer to the spirit of the original LSH than the last few comic book versions have been. At least Smallville captured the gosh-wow enthusiasm of being teenagers with powers and getting to interact with their icon, Superman.

Comics Continuum has a few pics from Smallville's 200th episode featuring James Marsters as Brainiac Five, unfortunately the producers opted not to go green...

B5 not green = EPIC FAIL. I'll pass on this episode.

Posted by Malvolio on :

Not a problem for me. If Brainiac's not green, why should Brainiac Five be green?

Posted by future king on :

Well, because Brainiac 5 is from Colu, where a thousand years from now people from that planet are a greenish colour.

Maybe this Brainiac 5 is using a "face inhibitor" or something that masks his true features (on a count of 21st century Earth people would freak out if they saw an honest-to-goodness green man from another planet).

BTW, James Marsters is TOO OLD to play Brainy anyway, just like Tom Welling is little too "long in the tooth" to be playing Superboy compared to the three actors they got to play the Founders a year and a half ago.

Posted by Set on :

Between the cartoon and the reboot, I've come to prefer the idea of a younger-than-normal Brainy. His petulant and immature attitude (which, granted, is more prevalent in his older incarnations, as if Coluans get more bratty and behaviorally inept as they age), which can be fun in a younger character (like Damian Wayne), comes off as curmudeonly and just Oscar-the-Grouch-y when he's older.

So, I think I'd rather see someone younger than James Marsters as well. The kid from Sixth Sense and A.I. would probably make a rocking version of the cartoon Brainy...

Posted by Candle on :

Marsters was the original Brainy, so it's not unusual that he would be again, like Malvolo said.
AND I agree with future king about the inhibitor.
(We might see him green during the story, at some point.)

We also don't know what era this Brainy is from.
The Legionnaires DO have a history of coming in to Clark's time from any period in the Legion's existance.

And in 'Smallville' there never was a SuperBOY.
Clark has been acting as a SuperMAN for a long time, now, just on a smaller scale (Metropolis and Smallville) and without the tights.

We just saw him in a Legion (Smallville style) outfit with a red leather jacket, which I liked.

I've never liked the tights look much, especially in 2010.

My confusion stems from how the Founders realted to "Kal" during that whole episode, acting like they already knew him (hinting that they had had adventures together already) and reacting surprised that he didn't recognize them. Garth even ribbed Clark about not being able to fly.
It all made me, as a viewer, think these kids came from a time AFTER this episode's timeline ... meaning that Kal-el had yet to become a good friend and fellow "Legionnaire" (and learn to fly) and so that would mean that the befriending would happen after that episode, in the future of that timeline and Clark would therefore be even a bit OLDER then ... no?

Eeeek!

Like I said, I'm so confused!
I know the show takes many liberties with history, but at the very LEAST they should have cast three actors a lot closer to Welling's age.
That's all I'm saying.

P.S. I agree with you about the not liking tights!

i think i will be okay with the lack of green skin, i will pretend that he using makeup to make himself look 'human'. after all Brainy has done that before and usually does a good job of it, im more pissed he's not in purple and doesn't look like he has a force shield belt, as for the age thing every one in that show looks like they are pushing 30 so im okay whit them using James Marsters. (cause James Marsters is a good actor so better chance at a good performance )

I thought that Garth acted surprised that Kal didn't fly and then said that he(Kal) couldn't fly.
Then, Cos shushed Garth when he started to comment/rib Kal about it.

Actually, I think you're pretty right on, except, I do't know that they had actually had a relationship with Clark before. It seemed to me, and I am often wrong, that that just knew about all of them from historical accounts, mostly.

Since there was never a SuperBOY in this reality, the Legion doesn't have the same relationship with Kal-el as in THIS timeline.
I only saw the episode once, though.

Since Kal hadn't known about them, and his adventures with him come later, I think, his age in relationship with their's might be irrelivent(sp).
Rokk and Imra seemed much closer to Kal's age than Garth, too.
Brainy appears older than Kal, which might be irrelivent as well, for the reason I said earlier or because this Brainy is a construct and not a biological entity like our Brainy.

Are you sure it is black? On my monitor the jacket is a very, very dark purple (but the shiny areas show that it is purple, not black), and the pants look to be a similar color. With the green t-shirt, that makes him purple and green.... 2 of the 3 primary colors of his usual costume (hope he isn't wearing yellow/gold footwear though). It would seem to be the typical Smallville-ized re-imaging of the character.

As cheesy as it might be (if they do in fact use green makeup) I am going to watch this episode if only for the Legion reference it will provide.
I'm assuming this Brainy is actually the Legion's Brainiac 5 (humanoid)... not some future descendant of the robotic Brainiac that the founders came back to destroy in that season 8 episode.

From a 'Legion' point of view it was a little disapointing. However, as someone that has watched this usually dreadful show off-and-on, it was great to see Brainiac 5 tell 'Kal-El' to stop moping and get on with being a hero. If only this had happened 9 seasons ago.... [Smile]
