Yep- no date mentioned, though. They're going to be sold through the Mattel collector's site, which opens Monday, July 28, as announced at Comic-Con.

They'll be packaged as 4-packs! No word on which characters will be in the first pack. In order for these to continue, that pack'll have to sell, I'm sure.

Here's the site where I got this info
Actionfigureinsider.com

And here's the link to the Mattel website:

Thanks Todd. I heard this was announced this morning.

I saw a blurry picture of a slide they showed at the panel. It only showed the "L" symbol (next to a Shazam lightning bolt) under what looked like part of the Justice League Unlimited logo they use on that line so maybe it's going to be a part of it. I could see some JLU style Legion figures, especially the designs used in "Far From Home." (That was the Supergirl JLU ep, right?)

Posted by ultra lad on :

mattel will make legion action figures available on there webstore in the future in the jlu style they said 4 packs so hope is still alive

Posted by PenaltyKillah on :

Really? They've gave the same bit of promise a year ago.

Posted by Mystery Lad on :

It's unclear whether the four-packs will be from the Legion's own cartoon or from the JLU appearance or something else.

This time, at least an actual retail source is given. Last year it was even *more* vague, as I remember.

Posted by Chemical King on :

Hm, if they should be from the cartoon, I certainly won't buy them cause the one above is looking incredibly ugly... this might work as a modern comic book, but not as an action figure...

Posted by Klordny on :

Given that it was shown under the JLU logo, it's likely that it'll be the Legionnaires as they appeared in the Superman/JLU series rather than the LSH animated show as above (which was cancelled due to low orders).

I think it'd be likely we'd see Saturn Girl, Chameleon, and Cosmic Boy (from "New Kids in Town") and Brainiac 5 (from "Far From Home"), four of the five Legionnaires with speaking parts - Bouncing Boy's body would require a unique male body mold.

Posted by rtvu2 on :

I was at the panel and the Legion toys will fall under the JLU Banner and style. It won't be until 2009 though guys.

Posted by Tekwych on :

And the JLU line is now exclusive to Target stores and the new Mattel collectors website: http://www.mattycollector.com

Posted by kcekada on :

What about the 6-inch DCUC line?

While I'll probably buy JLU Legion figures -- especially those that use the Cockrum costumes (Colossal Boy, Lightning Lad and Timber Wolf come to mind, not sure about the rest)

I really want 6-inch figures with a less cartoony look.

Posted by matter-eater man on :

It will be interesting who makes the cut. Supergirl & B5 are probably good bets but after that??? Bouncing Boy was a prominate character in the JLU episode plus the Legion toon but he would require a new mold made & anyone familiar with the JLU figs knows that's not going to happen anytime soon. (sooner if the 4 pack sells well)

Posted by rtvu2 on :

This is from Chip from the AFI Boards

MattyCollector.com Exclusive 4-packs
(note: all figures in each pack will come individually carded)

Gotham Criminals (TNBA Scarecrow, JLU Clock King, TNBA Bane, JLU Harley Quinn) - 4th Quarter 2008

Captain Marvel - 1st Quarter 2009

Legion of Superheroes - 2nd Quarter 2009

So the earliest we would see LSH toys - at least in the JLU line - would be May of next year.

They could show up sooner in the DCU Classics line or Infinite Heroes line.

Fwoosh rumor:

Colossal Boy C&C series in 2009:

http://thefwoosh.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=52334

Posted by Tekwych on :

Unfortunately that is pure rumor and fan speculation. LSH figures ARE on the game plan for 2009 but not as part of the DCUC line. They are planed as part of the online JLU exclusives to be offered at MattyCollector.com.

While I would LOVE to see LSH figures in the DCUC line DC & Mattel are not allowing them as options. There is a chance to see some LSH in the DC Infinite Heros line during 2009 as well but probably just the founders. It looks like if the DCIH figures happen they will be in either the 1980's costumes (Great Darkness Saga) or the 2008 Action costumes.

Posted by kcekada on :

Could be, but I haven't seen anything from Mattel stating that Legion couldn't be in the DCUC wave.

It does appear that the JLU versions will debut first, but I'm certainly counting on Legionnaires being in the DCUC line as well.

Great Darkness figures would be great -- as the uniforms used in that story were around in the 70s as well. The only problem would be Timber Wolf who was in that disco-inspired, chest hair revealing number that followed the Cockrum costume.

Posted by Tekwych on :

Matty Collector will be offering 4 LSH figures as part of their JLU animated series. Cosmic Boy, Lightning Lad, Saturn Girl and Brainiac 5 as seen in the 5th season of JLU (Far from Home, episode 10).

In a Press Release dated 3/10/09 Mattel said:
We did want to announce that the DCUC Ultraman and Alex Luthor 2 pack will go on sale April 15th and the JLU LOSH pack will go on sale May 15th.
Faker will be on sale this Tuesday March 16th and will be limited to 4 per person due to his availability at NYCC.

These usually go on sale starting at around 11am EST (8am PST)

While no JLU figure has sold out in less than a week so far my connection at Mattel has said there was a noticeable jump at Mattycollector after announcing the LSH figures. I can also say that while NO additional LSH figures are currently planed they have already asked for sculpts of the next 4 'in case things change in May'

As a recap - May 15th the LSH JLU figures will become available at Matty Collector Online

It looks like Eaglemoss will be releasing lead figurines of Cosmic Boy, Saturn Girl and Lightning Lad.

These come with glossy magazines devoted to the history of the characters.

I'm glad to see these- and I'll buy 'em-- but, Lord, the rest of the Legionnaires are like Jan Brady. "Founders, fouders, founders..."

or/and "Brainiac 5, Brainiac 5, Brainiac 5" as he is always getting into the merchandise such as Action Figures, Heroclix, VS card, etc...and keeps popping somewhere in comics such as Superman, Booster Gold, and recently REBELS...beating out Triplicate Girl, Phantom Girl, Colossal Boy, Chameleon Boy, and others before him. I would love to see Princess Projectra to get some recognition somehow.

The list I saw had Brainiac 13 on it. There was some comment about that character not having enough appearances.

Has Eaglemoss clarified?

Posted by Tekwych on :

Well Master's of the Universe Faker went on sale and lasted 3 hours, 3 hours. Also Matty has said on line sales of JLU figures are on the fence and continuation will be determined by sales of the LSH and Marvel Family waves. If you want these figures I would recommend being available on Friday May 15 at 12:00 Noon EST to place your order at MattyCollector.com.

I now have much better pictures available at Go! Figure.

Posted by rocket cat on :

I guess they have started making the figures, cause this Brainiac 5 has shown up on eBay. Guess this seller knows someone who works at the factory since they have many unpainted figures for sale...anyhow...here's the link.

eBay Item Page Link

I'm holding out for all 4 from Mattel, but if anyone wants to see close up pics of a finished Brainiac 5 figure check it out.

EDIT: And DAMN I just realized on May 15th I'm going to be in Tokyo! Or rather I'm leaving here on May 14th and it'll be May 15th when the plane lands. *headdesk*

Mine should be here tomorrow! I wish I had ordered some stands-- maybe with the next set (here's hoping there'll be one!)

Let's see- who appeared in the JLU episode? Cham was in the Superman episode- so he could... Bouncing Boy was there... Wildfire? Either Shadow Lass or Phantom Girl for the girl slot.

They have started doing characters that never appeared in a DC animated show... so Element Lad, Luornu, etc. and etc. could get a shot.

Wonder if they'll ever release figs based on the Legion cartoon? That are designed to look like those characters through a JLU lens?

Woot! The UPS truck was pulling away just as I got home!

But Saturn Girl has this giant mutant eyebrow. Someone got a little sloppy while painting. Anyone know how good Mattycollector's customer service is for returns? Got them in the mail today....and gonna have to send them back. :/

Brainy's forehead symbol is almost not there and smudged and Cosmic Boy's hair is smeared down. And Saturn Girl's has one eyebrow higher than the other, but if that were the only problem out of the four I would have kept them cause I find that kinda funny... [Razz]

They are sending a new one out, but I gotta pay my own shipping to get it back to them. They tell me the whole process will take about 3 weeks.

But on the up side they say they almost never get a second call about this once a replacement is sent out.

Matter-eater man, the number is at the top of your order slip. 1-877 GO MATTY.

Hang in there dude. International shipping is s-l-o-w, and it took over 3 weeks for mine to arrive (and I'm just over the boarder in Canada) but they finally came in last week. They were well worth the wait too as they look great!

We should start a thread here regarding which 4 should be the next Legionnaires made by Mattycollector...
My vote would be for the next to join the team chronologically after the founders and Brainy, so: Triplicate Girl, Phantom Girl, Chameleon Boy and Sun Boy.

Posted by Mystery Lad on :

Those of you that purchased multiple sets want to be sure and check that you got one of each of the characters. I got two Saturn Girls and no Brainy. So I had to send the whole set back and am now awaiting the arrival of the replacements.

I like future king's idea of following the chronology of the team for issuing future Legionnaires, but that would take a bit of the fun of surprise out of it, wouldn't it?

Also, I think they'll likely issue those characters that appeared in the JLU episode before branching out to those that didn't. They've certainly begun to pick characters that didn't appear in the cartoon, so they could well choose any LSH character for the next wave.

My personal picks would be Element Lad, Sun Boy, Shadow Lass and Chemical King. But really, I'll just be happy to finally see *any* Legion girl other than Saturn Girl or Supergirl finally get made.

Posted by Yk on :

Good point, ML. The Legion had strong female role models before just about everybody else and they weren't just there as eye candy they were important characters in the stories (even though the standard 60's cliches were prominent). I think they deserve recognition.

Posted by stuorstew on :

Yay! Mine came today. Love them.

Not so keen on the additional Custom charge that accompanied them but these things happen.

Hope they make more as I would especially like to see a Triplicate Girl/Bouncing Boy four pack.

Got mine just fine here in Brazil. [Smile]

Posted by Mystery Lad on :

Just got my replacement set. I like each of them. Brainy's blueish skin read 'wrong' to me, so I've decided to think of him as Brainiac 6- the son of Querl Dox and Shadow Lass.

I think he and Lightning Lad have the best faces. Brainy's eyes are especially well done- they sort of disappear if you tilt the head down slightly and he really appears to glower.

Garth reminds me of the actor who played Dawson on DAWSON'S CREEK. Not fond of the dark hair color, I think I'll repaint- something I've done to several figures, with varying results. In general, figs of characters who are blond or red-haired are made using what I think of as too dark a color.

Does anyone else think this?

Posted by Para-Dox on :

I'm guessing they didn't want Brainy to clash with green lantern and green arrow. Supergirl was an unusual kid, she liked her greens

I and two other Legion fans are working on an article we plan to send to Mattel regarding how we'd like to see the Legion represented in the DCUC line.

Basically, we plan on requesting 12 characters initially and more as needed. The article will be updated weekly until we have the first 12 members.

Then, we'll continue with discussion and lists of C&Cs, variants, villains, more Legionnaires, etc.

If interested, here's the link:

Action Figure Pictures and TheFwoosh.com have, finally, posted an interview with Scott Neitlich, the man in charge of the DC lines at Mattel. In answer about other teams that might begin to show up he states:
quote:
Yeah, actually, I think you are going to see a lot more of that in 2010 and 2011 with the waves. You know, they won’t be fully themed with like, seven Green Lanterns or seven Legion members, but it will follow with like we have done with wave 11 with Katma, John, Kilowog and Shark, so you will see more close connections like that.
This does not guarentee that LSH figures are on the way but does show that Scott noticed the sales numbers of the LSH JLU set and that LSH is being considered, in some form, for the DCUC line.

Yeah, I also saw that response. I am happy that something is finally in the works. I was very disappointed that in 12 waves, not one Legionnaire has appeared. Superboy is in wave 13 -- hopefully it's a late Silver Age or Bronze Age version -- something to build a Legion around.

Slightly unrelated but if anybody is collecting the DC Superhero Figurine Collection then there are some Legionnaires on their way.

Number 68 will be Garth, 71 Rokk and 78 Imra.

They are on 40 at present so there is still a while to go.

Supergirl (the current version) is #14. I wonder wether these will be the Kitson/Manapul Prime versions or the Frank Earth 0 versions.

Do artists get royalties when their designs - I'm thinking only costumes here - appear on figurines/statues trade-cards etc? The idea of Frank getting anything for Garth is not pleasing. Bring back the classic Cockrum outfit.

Posted by stuorstew on :

Looking at the pictures they are using for the covers I would say that Rokk and Imra are going to be in their current Frank costume as they are the same as their Lo3W covers. But the Garth one is completely different so there is a possibility it could be the Cockrum costume. Admittedly a very small one.

From a Q&A with Mattel:

quote:
Hyperion asks:

"There are, without a doubt, dozens if not hundred characters on the possible-pending list. Most, if not all, have had costume modifications over the years. What is the likelihood of, when a character (such as Legion founders Cosmic Boy or Saturn Girl) is selected (without giving a specific wave where s/he will appear) that the fans who will be the one actually buying the figures, get an opportunity to vote on which costume they wish to appear- with top vote gaining selections being considered for variants? Plus, what are the chances of a Flight Ring being included with Legion figures?"

We have some really cool plans for the Legion. When we do get to them, it is likely they will be in their most iconic costume for their initial release. But that does not preclude them from being re-released later in different incarnations.

I wonder how far away are Legion DCUCs.

I wonder how Mattel will determine what costumes qualify as "most iconic". Based on their current obsession to complete DCUC versions of the Legion of Doom and the 1980's Super Powers line, my hunch is that they would go for Cockrum/Grell costumes - which works fine for me [Smile]

Hopefully we will start seeing some Legion figures announced in the waves coming in the second half of 2010.

First Legion (related) action figure will be announced in this week's Toy Fare, and it's...

TYR

A bit of a letdown, because he's there due to being in the 80s Super Powers line. But Mattel says that Legion is in the works, so I'm hoping for some official news at this month's Toy Fair (not to be confused with Toy Fare).

Pics are the Fwoosh. They went more with the Super Powers look than the Cockrum design, unfortunately.

I'm guessing a C&C of Colossal Boy may be ours in early 2011...sigh.

I'll be getting Tyr pretty much no matter what he looks like. Cannot wait to see the Legion though.

My choices would be:

Cosmic Boy
Lightning Lad
Saturn Girl
Dawnstar
Wildfire (2 versions of him, as they usually do 2 versions of at least 1 fcharacter)
Ultra Boy (Personal request)
Emerald Empress

They're doing him because he was in Super Powers...no other reason. They have been going through all the characters from that line slowly. Even doing variants of several Kirby characters to represent their Super Powers designs. (Mantis being one of them)

More news from ToyFare.

quote:
Mattel will have a very big DC 75th anniversary presence at the San Diego Comic Con in July. They will have some "really amazing exclusives for the brand" which they probably announce in April. "As well as one of the most demanded subsets of the DC Universe - The Legion of Super-Heroes. We definitely have something really big in mind to celebrate the heroes of the 31st century, we're just not ready to announce them yet."
So maybe we'll actually see a Legionnaire by the end of 2010? If not, certainly in 2011.

Posted by Suddenly Seymour on :

Seeing the word "exclusive" strikes fear to my very collecting core. Online and con exclusives are both nightmares to deal with, especially con exclusives (eg Wonder Twins and Gleek). It'll probably be a con exclusive, so I guess that means I don't need to clear shelf space. [Frown]

Posted by kcekada on :

Nah. I doubt they'll be con exclusives, but I can see Matty.com having some Legion exclusives.

I do hope we see some Legionnaires in the C&C's though. I want to see Colossal Boy announced as a C&C this Summer.

Ultra-Humanite is in scale. The other figures are something called (two-up), which I guess means they were produced at twice the size for the show.

Validus is the Collect & Connect figure for wave 15 of DCUC, going on sale starting in late August at Kmart, then spreading to other retailers in the fall.

A 2-up is the original sculpt, in this case by the Four Horsemen Studios, used to get as much detail as possible into the design. The factory then pantagraphs the tooling mold down to the finished size of the figure.

Validus will be a bit over 9" in hight so somewhat small but still half again the hight of the standard male figure. This gives us two LSH Villains and an answer to Mattel's statement "We will kick off our LSH sub-line in a BIG way". I now fully expect to see an 80s-esque Legion character about once every 2-3 waves for at least the next year. This would mean 5-7 characters are already in the line-up. I have had discussions with the four horsemen about the re-use of Hawkgirls wings for Dawnstar so she is very possible. There is also a 'Teen Buck' that stands at about 5.5", not quite a head smaller than the Adult Superman that is expected to be the base for the LSH line. Raven, Donna Troy and Beast Boy have all used this new 'Teen Buck' so far.

Keep in mind that the 'style' of Mattel's DCUC line is to create a new take on characters that draw form all versions within DC. The Four Horsemen look at as much source material as they can from Comics, cartoons, and even other statues and figures to find the essence of a character and include nods to its most iconic moments.

I expect to see the founders, Dawny, Phantom Girl, Ultra Boy, Shadow Las, and (I hope) Wildfire on the short list. While DC is still bushing the Lighting Era Legion the 4HM have said their hearts lie in the early 80s

hmmm when I was skimming the Toyfare (or action figure magazine?) magazine last night, I saw a picture of Validus - he looks GREAT! but I did not buy that magazine...and have it scanned. [Frown] Anyone have seen that?

Posted by future king on :

I saw that as well (you were right, it was Toyfare magazine) and I believe he will be sold in pieces as part of the next DC direct series of figures, and when you put those pieces together you get this large Validus. It should be awesome!

I personally hope that Mattel continues the series they started last year with the Cos/Lightning Lad/Saturn Girl/Brainy set action figures. They are pretty well sculpted (in the tradition of JLU line) and I hope the next wave of 4 would be Trip, Phantom Girl, Colossal Boy and either the original Invisible Kid (Lyle Norg) or Chameleon Boy.

I'm guessing the closest we'll ever get to that is the figs they did of the founders in their adventure era costumes. Sadly, there just isn't the demand for the original costumes.

Just announced at the Mattel panel at SDCC and showing up on various action figure sites :

there will be a 12 pack of the Legion available on mattycollector.com

that's 12 action figures on Mattel's collector oriented web site.

prelim list reported on one site (very fluid and subject to change) :

Superboy
Saturn Girl
Brainiac 5
Cosmic Boy
Lightning Lad
Chameleon Boy
Matter Eater Lad
Colossal Boy
Karate Kid
Ultra Boy
Wildfire
Timber Wolf

Wow-- $180 for that set. I haven't seen word about when it'll be orderable.

I notice that there's only 3 of those figures that weren't made by DC Direct. That's unfortunate. Hopefully, the others will at least be in costumes other than the ADVENTURE ones (where applicable).

With that price, I worry there'll never be a second or third set.

Sigh. I suppose if there were, it'd be Supergirl plus Element Lad and Chemical King with Blok as the CNC. And a bunch of male villains to fill it up.

What's it gonna take to get some female Legionnaires other than Imra and Kara made? And Jan and Condo?

I should be excited by this, but I'm really not.

It sounds like if the 12 pack sells, that will determine how fast (or not) other Legion figures are released.

Also a correction - looks like it will be a mix
of Cockrum/Grell/Giffen pre-crisis costumes.

Assuming this first 12 pack sells well and Mattel moves forward with more pre-crisis-on-infinite-earths era Legion figures, we would have enough left for almost two more 12 packs.

So here is my speculation on possible line-ups.

pack #2
Mon-El
Star Boy
Sun Boy
Element Lad
Invisible Kid II
Blok
Chemical King
Dawnstar
Phantom Girl
Shadow Lass
Dream Girl
Shrinking Violet

pack #3
Supergirl
Bouncing Boy
Ferro Lad
Invisible Kid I
Tyroc
Projectra
Light Lass
White Witch
Duo Damsel
Mano
Emerald Empress
Persuader

Since we are getting a Validus collect-n-connect in the regular DCUC line and I can see Tharok slipping into that line because he would make a cool-looking figure, I filled out the balance of pack #3 with the remaining classic Fatal Five members.

From the pics, it looks like they're using the same strategy that DC Direct used on the Adventure run: same body mold with paint, heads, and details to distinguish the characters. That's why no girls yet again. It's probably why they were willing to do the set at all, but I'm still disappointed to not get the girls.

But still totally psyched to get this. This is my Legion. It's fun to have the Adventure gang on the shelf, but this group is really the team I fell in love with.

But I agree, it would be nice to have a couple more girls in there. They have plenty of molds from this line. Oh, well, I'm sure we'll make it worth their while to make a second set.

i'm thrilled about the costumes for Cos and LL. would have preferred pink bikini for Saturn Girl. Tenz looks great but should have a half a metal chain in his hand to imply what that lump in his cheek is. Hope we get that Cockrum Karate Kid!!!!
the theory that fanboys don't want girl action figures is lame. my son and every other kid he knows wants WW. Hawkgirl, Raven, Starfire, etc. from the animated shows.
if they did their research they would know that LSH fans, especially, don't denigrate the female legionnaires. AND if you are such a fan that you spend $180 on a set of figures from the 70's and 80's, you're gonna want a full set of the group.
how lame, dc direct. GIVE US shiny platinum DREAM GIRL! and Cockrum PROJECTRA!! Shadow Lass! and PG with pigtails and bell bottoms!! Shrinking Violet in her green jumpsuit! Light Lass! Dawnstar! heck give me an Emerald Empress!!

Gee, it is SO great we get Matter Eater Lad before Dream Girl, Phantom Girl, Shadow Lass and all the other women of the Legion who contributed so much more... <sarcasm>

I know toy companies are hesitant with female figures because they think 'boys' won't buy them..but at @ $200, no kids are buying this set. They should have just done it straight forward, in order of membership.

Sorry, don't mean to bitchy, and I will (somehow) get this set, but Saturn Girl AGAIN being the only Legion female figure sticks in my craw!

Maybe it's a bait and switch type deal...even tho they aren't my favorites, I find it hard to believe they would put Karate Kid, Wildfire and Ultra Boy all in the first set. Aren't they some of the fanboy faves?? I think they should hold off on those three and put some of the ladies in this first set. In fact, don't even put all three FOUNDERS in the first wave! Make people NEED to buy them all!
I might even skip this set if it means the next set will have Dream Girl, Star Boy, Phantom Girl, Element Lad, Light Lass, Mon-El, Shadow Lass, Sun Boy, Shrinking Violet, Dawnstar, Projectra and Blok!

It appears to me that they're going with the Great Darkness Saga costumes + Matter-Eater Lad. Which is fine with me. That's the most iconic versions for a lot of people. Hopefully that same group buys action figures so we can get more.

yes to my knowledge these will be the standard size
of the DC Classics line and I guess this will be considered a sub-line to DCUC much like the also announced Green Lantern sub-line (2 waves there).

I am curious to find out whether Colossal Boy will just be the normal size or a collect-n-connect size figure.

I haven't been able to find the source link yet, but a poster on the Mattel DCUC forum said there is a fresh interview up with the Four Horsemen (the guys who design the DCUC figures for Mattel). And apparently in this interview, they reveal that this originally intended to be a 24-pack but that it wasn't cost effective. There is also a mention that Duo Damsel was intended to be in the 24-pack.

So since this implies that another 12 Legion figures are in some phase of the design process, we will very likely see these figures at some point unless the 12-pack sells horribly.

A 24 pack?! [Elastic Lad] That would have been epically awesome! I'm going to have to clear another room for all of them. Good thing I'm single again. [Smile]

After looking at the photos following the link at the top of this page posted by HamzHutch, I'm really looking forward to getting the Matter-Eater Lad figure. His expression is great- and I love that he's got a big hunk of something or other in his mouth!

They should include a rock or a gun or an anvil or something with a bite taken out of it.

Garth, Clark and Rokk look pretty good- though there's something kind of... smarmy about their expressions. Maybe it's just the lighting.

I don't care for Imra's head sculpt. But then, there've been- what 4? 5? figs of her already- so they have to make her look unique, I guess.

The Hussy and her Harem-- ha! Hey, Paul Levitz--you should write a story based on the action figure release! Imra banishes all the girls and fights crime with her eleven boyfriends!

I just realized-- Garth, Jo, Brin, Rokk and Clark are all in the assortment! She really is telepathically influencing the selection of action figure production!

I should be excited by this, but I'm really not.

Half of me is excited by the prospect of 12 Legionnaire from the Cockrum/Grell/early Giffen era (most of these work for the Great Darkness Saga -- with the exception of Karate Kid, I believe).

But am very concerned that the went with almost all of the big guns in the first set and only one female.

If I don't see Phantom Girl in the second assortment, I'll be p.o.ed.

It wouldn't take much effort to modify 80s Cos into Grell's 70s version.

But yeah, the guys at Mattel should have known that Legion fans want the ladies as well.

Yeah... I understand the $15 individual pricepoint, but as a 12-figure set it's a bit much. And $360 for the originally-intended 24 figure set?? [Eek!] [gasp] [Gasp]

Posted by Chemical King on :

Oh wow, those are looking really great. Especially Lightning Lad, compared to the rather lame look of the DC Direct figure... but hey, no magnetic pearls with Cosmic Boy this time? I rather liked this gimmick...

But I really hope that it will be possible to get them seperately. I don't need another Superboy, for example. And I think that 180 $ is a whole lot of money - even if it's possible to afford it, the question is if you really should... hm...

And I second the feelings of many here: Not enough female Legionnaires in the set. I've been dying for a Phantom Girl, Projectra or Dawnstar (especially in their sexy 70s costumes) for so long. Ah well, at least those new toys are really looking fantastic. Guess it will be impossible to skip them. Time to give my old Brainys, Superboys and Chams to my daughter...

... and hey: No Star Boy there, that's a good thing - as there just has been a Star Boy figure in his 70s costume.

Apparently in the original proposed 24 pack there wasn't just going to be a Duo Damsel but 2 of them. If they do a second 12 pack I hope they don't go with the 2 figures of DD. It would first of all take up 2 spots. I also liked her combined look.

Very happy though that we are getting anything. Great to see Matter-eater Lad already!!!

That is my thinking as well. They could do it at matty.com. I think it would be huge! Even though DD is not at the top of my list for female Legionnires -- I still want her and this would help balance the ratio. Then they could include other ladies in the next boxed set -- or whatever they have planned.

I'd buy that 3-pack! Good idea there Pov.

I hope the figures are the same size as the 4-pack that Mattycollector put out last year (with LL/CB/SG/B5) because I hate starting one collection then having to start yet another just for the sake of owning everything Legion.
Hopefully last year's Matty 4-packs will continue with more characters regardless of this new 12 or 24 pack they're currently working on.

That 4-pack was for the Justice League Unlimited tv show line and that line was in a totally different (much smaller) scale. The just announced 12-pack is part of the DCUC line and will be in the 6"-7" scale. While Mattel continues to release a few new figures for the JLU line each year, I've not heard them indicate they have any plans to release more Legion-related figures for that line.

Actually, with prices likely to go up each year, we'd all pay well over $180 for 12 figures if they came out periodically over the long haul.

$180 seems like a huge amount on the surface, but it's actually reasonable when you get down to it. Shipping has me a little worried, but I can deal with it.

I'm more worried about ordering it through matty.com. I've heard horror stories about that site.

Oh yea, stuff sells out on matty fast like hot concerts sell out on ticketmaster. It wouldn't surprise me if the 12-pack sells out the same day it goes on sale. I just hope they limit the number of packs per buyer so the scalpers don't buy everything up.

Shipping shouldn't be too bad as long as they don't try packaging the figures in long single row box or a 3 rows of 4 box, etc. Ideally the 12 figures would come in a couple of boxes so they
can easily fit into a standard shipping box. But the odds of that happening are probably slim.

If by "worried" you mean their shipping costs, well I have ordered from them 3 times now and I've always found their prices to be quite fair (and I'm in Canada remember so that is a factor). If you're worried about the condition of the package being shipped, again they are pretty good when it comes to wrapping the boxes tightly enough that they survive the trip. They even open them at customs first before they arrive to me in Canada, and the toys and packaging have always arrived in mint condition.

This has been my experience with Mattycollector in the past and I will be using them again in the future. Hope this info helps you.

Won't they presolicit the Legion box via Previews like everything else? That's the way for me over here in germany to get stuff, my comic book shop sends me the Previews catalogue every month, I tellthem what to get for me and they do so.

Do things work different with Mattel?

Oh my, why do they have to make it so complicated? Wouldn't they reach a much bigger audience if they would use Previews?

That's really a bummer. Guess I'll have to ask my comic book shop if they can support me on this one.

Posted by Director Lad on :

I think in this instance it's more about trying to drive traffic to the Matty Collector Web site. From their perspective, the more people they bring to the site, the more merchandise they stand to move, based on customers seeing something on the site they didn't know was available. Also, the more they sell direct, the more direct profit they make on the sets. A set like this is also likely a limited run, so they have more control over orders if they do it directly. For the Legion, they're probably assuming that the audience isn't that big to begin with, so why go through the effort and expense to solicit the set with Diamond?

It's rather interesting in that the $180 for 12-pack (or $360 for a 24pack) works out to $15
a figure, which is the average retail price you would pay for DCUC in stores (assuming you can find them). So you would be spending the same amount of money on average over time if you were to buy the figures individually (if they were made available that way). But by putting them into a single pack, Mattel has created sticker shock by making people go wow I spend a lot of money on this hobby and do I really want to spend that much on on a Legion sub-line.

It wouldn't surprise if down the road that certain figures (ie Brainy, Saturn Girl, etc) get re-released as All-Star singles in part of a future DCUC wave. But for figures like M-E Lad, likely the only place to get him will be this 12-pack.

If you mean early -- as in 2011! Won't be available this year -- unfortunately.

That's really a bummer. Guess I'll have to ask my comic book shop if they can support me on this one.

Actually, it's pretty easy to buy through MattyCollector, even from abroad. I've bought from them a number of times. Very simple.

In Germany, we have a saying: "Your word be in God's ear" meaning that I hope you're right [Smile]

Let's hope the Euro will have stabilized til spring 2011, might be a major price factor...

I don't think it's been mentioned here yet, but I saw on eBay that someone is taking preorders for a Tyr figure, which is supposed to be part of Mattel's DC Heroes Wave 14 line. This figure seems much more detailed than the one offered by Kenner in the mid-eighties.

Posted by kcekada on :

Well...yeah.

DCUC figures are much more sophisticated than the Super-Powers line of the 80s.

Most, if not all, of the figures from the 80s Super Powers line are finding their way into the DCUC waves.

I just wish Tyr had his original ball-shaped gun that Dave Cockrum designed as opposed to the clunky bazooka arm Jack Kirby added.

I cringe whenever I see an ad for one of these things. Because they're always aimed towards adult collectors. They're one more sign that the comics industry is in the middle of a long, incredibly drawn out, collapse.

$180 seems like a huge amount on the surface, but it's actually reasonable when you get down to it. Shipping has me a little worried, but I can deal with it.

I'm more worried about ordering it through matty.com. I've heard horror stories about that site.

I ordered the JLU type figures from them and had to pay almost the same amount again for postage costs as I did for the figures! I don't know why but the post office put some sort of import charge on them when they arrived in the UK.

So be careful when ordering these things!!

It didn't offer much new information.

The 12-pack was done in response to DC wanting something special for hardcore collectors.

The wanted to do Bouncing Boy, but it would require a new sculpt and was cost-prohibitive at this point. They wanted to do Duo Damsel, but couldn't make it work for the 12-pack. Other characters they would have liked to included -- Sun Boy, Phantom Girl (empahsized), Invisible Kid, Dawnstar, Blok, Ferro Lad.

More Legionnaires will probably show up in the C&C's.

Could be variants of the figures in the 12-pack down the road. Brainiac 5 was mentioned.

They want to finish the remaining four characters of the Fatal Five.

Don't give them any ideas. Before you know it, we'll all be living that old MST3K sketch about Johnny Long Torso: the action figure sold to buyers piece by piece so the manufacturers could drive the price up through the ceiling with minimal effort.

I am definately looking forward to this multi pack coming out next May (even if all the guys faces look exactly alike).

I wish Mattycollector would put out more Legionnaires like the Cos/Brainy/Saturn Girl/LL 4-pack they did last year though. It's good for them to continue something they started, plus based on the fact that you cannot get that 4-pack anymore since they've become sell-outs, I don't think they would have a problem selling out again and again...
It would be so great if they did, say, 6 more 4-pack so we could round out the entire Legion that way! LOL [Wink]

So what wave(s) are around for most people in stores? We just barely got the Validus wave here, & before that we had just recently gotten the Darkseid one.

Posted by ActorLad on :

Wave 17 of DC Universe Classics has just been revealed & it's Blackest Night themed. The figures are:

White Lantern Hal Jordan
Black Lantern Hal Jordan
Blue Lantern the Flash
Violet Lantern Wonder Woman
Orange Lantern Lex Luthor
Sinestro Corps Scarecrow
Indigo Lantern the Atom
BAF Anti-Monitor

Most of them look cool but I'd rather we go some more characters fitting the "classic/universe" idea, there seems to be way too much DC Direct overlap these days. Even with the sub-lines considering they have the GL Classics now too.

Posted by future king on :

Doesn't anyone else feel a bit ripped off that DC doesn't bat an eyelash endorsing and arranging for action figures of new GL themed supporting characters (Orange Lantern Lex Luther for cryin' out loud!??) but the Legion has been around for decades and we've barely seen a figure here and there? And even for that we have to scream/plead/beg and write in hoping it will happen?
So they finally do it, sort of, just to shut us up LOL

Just an FYI to any Legion fans who were interested, Mattel recently announced in one of their Q&As on The Fwoosh web site that the Legion 12-pack has now been pushed back to late summer 2011.

Oddly enough, they also admitted the original intent was to have it out by the holidays of this year.

The delay on the 12 pack is that supposedly the Four Horsemen needed more time to craft all of the figures (only 3 or 4 figures were in prototype stage when this was announced at Comicon.)

Also rumors are that the reason wave 17 is the deputy lantern wave (called the rainbow wave on the mattycollector boards and a wave made up primarily of repaints and tweaks) is because again the Four Horsemen have a growing backlog and apparently need more time to turn out the figures.

It's a 12-pack, so either they're all released or not.

Posted by Future on :

Yeah, like Colossal Boy said, with the addition of the Green Lantern Classics line and whatever else they sculpt for Mattel, the Four Horsemen have been getting backlogged. So the Legion 12-pack especially, as an online exclusive, is probably less of a priority than all the stuff that will make it to retail.

Considering the gamble on releasing the 12-pack anyway, I'd rather they take their time and get everything just right.

Posted by ActorLad on :

I'm keenly aware it's a 12-pack but it's not as if toys 1st announced to be in a multi-pack have ever been later rescheduled to another wave, had been downsized, cancelled altogether or a mix of those options.

These, do indeed look, awesome and I cannot wait for them to be announced

I do hope that Jo and Thoms absence is due to them not quite being ready as opposed to the pack being reduced in numbers.

The only. exceedingly minor, criticism I have is Brainy looks strangely bulky in comparison to the others.

I think the reason that the remaining figures from the 12 pack aren't being displayed is that the Four Horsemen have not finished the sculpting process on them.

Posted by Future on :

To clarify, the four figures yet to be shown (as Colossal Boy said, likely due to having not been sculpted yet) are Karate Kid, Mon-El, Ultra Boy, and Colossal Boy. Star Boy isn't among their number, unless the slots have changed.

Personally, with how much this set has been pushed back and with how it's still a secondary work-in-progress for the Four Horsemen, I was hoping Mattel might have heard the outcry from fans half a year ago and changed the last few slots over to some Legion ladies. Nura and Ayla in their 80s outfits come to mind as simple repaints using the existing Imra body (minus the skirt piece). I almost wish they'd go that route. I could see Mon, Val, and Jo surviving in regular waves of DC Universe Classics easily. Plus, their inclusion in a regular wave could help justify the inclusion of their compatriots who otherwise we may never get to see - Shady, Jeckie, and Tinya.

Wishful thinking, probably. Still excited for this set and will support it regardless. I'm glad Cham is in his yellow/purple outfit just so the team has a more unified look, minus 70s Timber Wolf. Believe Mattel hasn't said anything since the report a few months back that the Legion set was coming late summer 2011.

Whoops, you're correct. My numbers were off. I forgot the first unveil had five Legionnaires instead of four, like this time. Which I'm fine and glad by. Mon-El will do good on his lonesome.

I love the sculpts on these figs. Brainy's face is exactly how I picture it, based on the various artists of the '70s. And I love Wildfire's boots! So cool that they really went for the swashbuckler tops. Gotta say though, isn't Drake rather ripped for someone who's a shapeless ball of anti-energy?

Wish they had gone with Cockrum's design for Chamelion Boy instead of Giffen's. Hopefully CB and KK will be more Cockrum/Grell goodness.

I, too, was disappointed to see that Cham's outfit didn't match the image shown at SDCC. I never liked Giffen's tweaks to Cockrum's work. I can live with (and customize) the dreadful violet/yellow combo, but if they dare go with Giffen's (downgrade) Colossal Boy pajamas over Cockrum's spiffy outfit, they'll be Hell to pay!!!

I know they haven't even been mentioned yet, but Phantom Girl and Shrinking Violet must both be 70s outfits. I can live with Element Lad in his horrid magenta/black combo, but would prefer the green/dark blue/black Cockrum version.

Frankly, I want to see Imra in her bikini eventually.

More than a few DCUC collectors are saying that the money they're saving on not getting much from waves 17 and 18 will be spent on the boxed set.

As my local comic book store does not see itself capable to get me the set, I'm going to order directly in the US - quite interesting experience to order something from over the Atlantic ocean.

What do you think, will we have to be quick once the box set is announced, or will I have time to wait for a better exchange rate?

Anyway I saw some pictures of Wildfire and Lightning Lad and ME Lad and I think those toys are simply amazing - maybe the best action figures I've EVER seen... though definitely lacking some females.

Cannot wait for this! This will be the rare item for which I'll actually keep the packaging! I'm even tempted to leave the figures in-- but I know that won't last. It looks so cool, I'll bet they'll sell quite a few of these to folk that aren't even LSH fans! Maybe they'll get converted...

Between the figs, the Archives, the hardback Levitz/Giffen books, the Star Trek crossover and the multiple series, I think DC's going out of it's way to make up for the anniversary fiasco a couple of years ago.

Posted by Colossal Boy on :

Coming out to day's Mattel panel at sdcc is that the Legion 12 pack is still targeted to go on sale on mattycollector.com sometime this fall.

The big news is that the DC Universe Classics 6" action figure line (which the Legion 12 pack is a subset of) is coming to an end in 2012. Apparently since DC is relaunching with dcnu, Mattel is going to relaunch their 6" line as well to get in synch with dcnu. That likely means if we get any legionnaires in the new line, it will be in dcnu costumes. So that leaves the possible DCU Club as the only place to possible get Legion figures in classic costumes.

Posted by Future on :

Speaking of the new DCU Club that Colossal Boy mentioned, one of the figures announced was the Thom Kallor version of Starman. Mattel has fallen in love with swappable heads recently, so I wouldn't be surprised if he came with a bearded head so you can display him with your 12-Pack Legionnaires.

There are two ways to get Starman. First is to subscribe to the club (which is kind of expensive if you're only in it for like ... the one Legionnaire they may ever produce). Second choice is to buy him off MattyCollector.com as a single. On the 15th of a subscription figure's month, it goes on sale to the general public while supplies last. Judging from the timetable and the fact Thom was the third figure shown, it's likely he won't be released until June 2012.

Posted by Pov on :

That sounds like a retread... was it DCDirect who did that already in a JSA line? I *know* I have a Starman with a swappable Thom head... have to dig him out and check if he's a DCD or Mattel.

Posted by Future on :

Yep! DC Direct released the same concept in their JSA line, Pov. Unless you're a scale freak, the DCU Starman release will be a retread.

I'm hoping the DCU Club subscriptions will offer us other Legionnaires someday. I can see Dawnstar or Mon-El making an appearance eventually. Not sure the hopes of getting anyone else, at least in the first few years.

Posted by Mystery Lad on :

In the write-up of the Mattel panel I read, Jay Garrick and Atrocitus were the other two characters that would be part of the subscription offering (funny Freudian slip- I typed 'submission' instead of 'subscription' initially). When asked about completing teams like the Metal Men and Doom Patrol, the Mattel rep mentioned the new club, according to the write-up. Without explicitly promising anything, of course.

There was the standard warning of doom and blame that if enough memberships aren't sold, the figures won't be produced.

I wish they'd go ahead and announce the rest of the list. DC Direct has already produced at least two of the three, and the third's the one I couldn't care less about. I' d buy Jay, even though I already have him, and Thom. Maybe Mattel could package their version with a clean-shaven head with a crew-cut, just to differentiate it from DC Direct's. Or with two extra heads, with the bearded one as the second.

I really want Elastic-Girl, Platinum, Lead and Tin. If at least two of those were in the sub list, I'd join. Or if I knew they were starting the Freedom Fighters. Or the Rogues. I'd be really pissed if I got the ones we know and a bunch of bat characters and Green Lanterns to finish the year, though. I suppose they'd command decent ebay prices and my local cbs would probably take them in trade, but I don't know if it's worth the trouble. With vacation coming up, and the Legion set - I don't know if I'm in the mood to gamble.

Posted by Future on :

Since the Batman Legacy line is continuing, I don't think you'll have to worry too much about Batpeople shoving their way into the subscription service. At the same time, I wouldn't be surprised if Green Lanterns and other "New Guardians" were some of the teams Mattel was hoping to complete so that may be a deal breaker.

I agree that I wish they would give us a list of potential candidates. I'm likely to join regardless as I've seen this line through since wave one, but I'd be less nervous about my financial commitment.

No matter what happens to this line, I have to give it props. No one else has ever given us so many Legion characters in action figure form save for DC Direct, even if most of it is in one punch.

Sorry, I love that the guy shooting the video does not get the "joke" of the Invisible Kid slot in the box. Seriously, for me...it's genius. You are producing X amount of figures, so instead of leaving an empty slot, you do a little molding to the packaging, and you then have an extra bonus for the fans. I love it.

The ad (posted by someone as being here ) says "12-pack", yet I count 14 boxes, and even if you dont' count the empty Invisible Kid one, it's still 13...which one doesn't come with it? Proty? Or is this a "baker's dozen" or is the term "12-pack" somehow not intended to be taken literally?

As of right now, it looks like the price from over a year ago is being honored. The set will be $180 & sale date is 10/17/11. Since we've seen a completed set now, I'm almost hopeful that date WON'T be pushed back.

Posted by Colossal Boy on :

Is the sale date still 10/17/11? I've not seen anything on the mattycollector site announcing it, but I may just not be looking in the right place.

Posted by Future on :

According to a news post in September on their site, that's still their sale date. It's weird to think it's finally here. I'm not surprised it isn't listed on their sales page yet - Matty's site is kind of notorious, at least with DCU items, for not putting them up until day of.

after doing some research, and I found this link ---

originally they were gonna do 24 action figures, including two duo damsels!!! - now trimmed down to 12. oh boy...i want those females legionnaires!!! grrr... Dream Girl, Duo Damsel, Phantom Girl, etc. come on!!!

Like Dev said, no one else is selling it because it's exclusive to the Matty web site. Try checking out this link on the sale date and a listing for it should be up.

Yeah. I'm baffled they keep sold out items up on their sales pages as a showcase. I guess they feel their pages would look pathetically empty if they didn't.

Most DCU items don't have a history of selling out day-of like their He-Man stuff does, so especially at the price tag I'm sure the Legion set will be on sale for AT LEAST a week, maybe longer. But don't quote me. Typically once they sell out they sell out, though in the past some items have magical new inventory on the site for discount sales.

Posted by Chemical King on :

Thank you for your kind information, (Captain?) Future :-) That's what I was hoping for - an item with a 180$ pricetag on it should sell out slower than the cheaper ones... but well, that's just my hope :-)

So I'm ready to do this. Really. Guess the shipping cost to Germany won't totally kill me :-P considering what some of the US Ebay Stores take for delivery to the EU...

But hey, the best part of getting this new goodies would be that my daugther would then be allowed to play with my old DC Direct Legion doubles like Cos, Ultra Boy, Mon-El... and maybe that way might get some connection to the Legion :-)

It is listed as "almost gone"...

When I left work it was still "comin soon" (almost an hour late), then I had to visit two of my troubled adolescents in hospital (they're both doing fine), and 90 minutes later it was listed as "almost gone" ... oh my, this was a thrill, I was able to place my order in time to get an email stating that my order was confirmed and "in the process of getting ready to ship"...

...so I guess I really just spent 215 $ on Legion toys and shipping... [Smile]

Checked back at MattyCollector and the Legion Set finally showed up for me - as officially sold out!

Wow. This is my first try on the Matty Collector web site and I have to say I'm not terribly impressed on how they do business.

I had been looking forward to this for weeks. Don't think I'll waste my time there again, and I'm certainly not going to get pillaged on ebay. The good news is I have an extra $200+ dollars now in pocket.

So how many did they sell until they were sold out - what do you guess? And does this mean they will produce further sets, finally realizing there's a financially strong Legion audience out there?

@Kid Quislet

Definitely a bummer, I feel sorry for you. Hope you'll get your set from a less capitalistic dealer.. [Frown]

They seem to have totally underestimated the amount of Legion fans willing to spend 200 $ on action figures. There probably will be a second edition if they are not totally dumb [Wink]

My hope is that this was the big test for their Legion line and that now, they will start to produce some single Legionnaires. My favorites would be: Phantom Girl, Blok, Dawnstar, White Witch, Lightning Lass and maybe a tiny Violet [Smile]

Because of personal reasons, I didn't get a chance to buy this set as well. If Mattel has any clue they better get more of these out there stat.

It's ridiculous that they didn't have more in stock.

Well, if Matty doesn't do a second run, I guess I'll have to content myself with the Adventure era figs from DC Direct. No way am I rewarding some eBay non-fan jerkface for scooping real fans out of this set. Very frustrating. I've been looking forward to this set for more than a year.

I missed out, too. Some people have jobs where computer access for shopping just isn't a possiblity. I really wish they'd done preorders. Oh, well-- maybe some picky collectors will return their set for some minor reason that I wouldn't mind. Guess it's check the site every couple of hours for the foreseeable future, in case more are made available.

I'd think that selling out in less than two hours would pretty much guarantee a second set, but who can figure out how Mattel thinks?

Posted by Dev - Em on :

Didn't even have a chance. Oh well.

Posted by Glen Cadigan on :

Given all of the trouble needed to mold twelve distinct figures, you'd think that they'd make more than one day's supply.

Posted by Suddenly Seymour on :

The JLU-verse Legion figures never really sold out (except maybe when they discounted them recently), so they probably underestimated the sales potential. I am surprised they didn't even last a day, though, given the price.

But Mattel and their website have a long history of poor customer service and not seeming to care in the least what customers want.

I doubt they'll do another run. They're happy to let the scalpers take care of the people slower Internet connections or with lives that prevent them from buying toys online during the workday, true fans be damned.

Posted by Colossal Boy on :

I was lucky enough to get my order in before the set sold out. Selling out in three hours was definitely a surprise as usually only comicon exclusives and MOTU stuff sells out that quickly.

One beacon of hope - as long matty leaves the set listed as "sold out" and not "gone for good", there's a chance (however slim) that they may do another run.

There's a better chance we may be seeing s second Legion set at some point - hopefully sooner than later.

Also don't forget that Star Boy/Starman will be coming in the subscription line in 2012.

Hm, as far as I can see only Colossal Boy and me were able to get an order done... did everybody else here luck out and if they did - where do all the Legion sets go in the end?

Do you think that a lot of dealers bought ten sets (that was the maximum amount) on a gamble to make a 50% profit margin like the one offer on Ebay implies?

Another question: Do you know how quickly Mattel starts with their shipping procedure? Guess it will take some weeks anyway to get those beauties to Germany...

I remembered ordering the JLU Legion line (four of them) and it arrived in my mail pretty fast...I was surprised to see it arrived...since I thought that it would take about a month or two...but it was fast.

I think it is a BIG BIG mistake for the Mattel to allow the orders maxed up to 10!!! geez! I wish we can find a way to petition or protest or put a bad review on Mattel to make them listen to us..but nope not work becuase they are all business! [Mad]

grrrrr....

Posted by Future on :

I'm not totally discouraged because I'm hearing rumors on the internet that the package's size may have been an issue for the early sell-out. Apparently this happened before with a Ghostbusters item that sold out swiftly, which was much larger and therefore they could only fit so many items in their processing warehouse.

No idea when, how many, or how long the Legion 12-pack will go on sale again. I'd like to think it will, though. It's unlikely the existing inventory got bought through that swiftly compared to other DCUC items. If the number of units they ordered was so small that they sold out that quickly, the item would be marked up a lot more.

Posted by Kid Quislet on :

I like your positive thinking, Future, but I must admit I'm kind of sour on the whole episode right now. It was a borderline proposition for me to be spending that much on these to begin with, and I now think Matty Collector made the right decision for me.

Maybe Jim Gallagher will quit his day job and pump out some more cool custom figures on commission...

Know the feeling as well, Lone Wolf - last year when the tickets for the Eurovision Song Contest went online, the server went down for hours - and when I finally could enter the homepage, it was listed as "sold out" ... ??? !!!

by the way I had a look at custom and tax policies of good old Germany and there will be some considerable charges there as well. Never understood what customs are good for (taxes well... I doubts their legitimacy either [Smile] ), if things go bad I might have to pay further 50 € for nothing... [Frown]

But hey, I'm still looking forward to this set.

The max order was 10? See, that's just asking for scalpers to swoop in. There's nothing about this that I'm happy about. I was absolutely ready to plunk down 180 bucks for the set, but when I went to the site at 10am Pacific, following the link from the email they sent announcing the on-sale last week, the set didn't even appear on the page. I never even had the option to get in the queue.

Some good news. Mattel has posted on the mattycollector web site that are considering the possibility of doing a second run of the LOSH set. That doesn't mean it's a done deal, but my gut feeling is that it may very well happen.

I bookmarked a link to the page with the set, not the link that matty sent out. It was still avaialble at 10 PST. I purchased mine at 10:20.

But it does appears that more sets will get made -- just be patient. I'm also hoping that they announce that more new Legionnaires will be coming out way -- as in a second 12-pack.

I was hoping nobody would feed the scalpers, but eBay shows three sets bought via Buy it Now... for $300, $370 and $400... and that's not including shipping. Lots of individual figures from the set up now and already sold, as well... So Mattel and the scalpers win, I guess. [shrug] [Razz]

I got my order. Sorry to hear that everyone else couldn't get one. No how idea how I got one after everyone else had some much trouble. I shop alot on Matty. 'Sold Out' is much better then 'Gone for Good'. Matty always keeps some stock back in case of damage or something gets lost in shipping for buyers. For example, I missed out on the Animal Man/B'wanna Beast DCU Classic set when it first went on sale. Couple of months later, I got it on sale. So after a few months, there is a good chance that this 12pack will be back. Heck, maybe they will do it at Christmas for the Christmas sale. I do hope that the quick sale out means another pack would be considered but I would guess that want come till 2013.

And if your fan and not a big buyer of DC or MOTCU on Matty, get the mystery packs when they are on sale. You pay $40 plus shipping - total cost around $50 and get about $100+ worth of stuff. Totally worth it.

More good news from following the mattycollector DCUC forum is that it sounds very likely there will be another run made of this set. The bad news is that it will probably sell out just as fast and people will have to fight the scalpers for them.

Still debating on that. I usually leave everything in the packaging. The best things about this special sets is that they are designed so you can keep the packing but take the figures out. Each section has either a top/bottom flap that you can slide the figure in or out. Its very elegant. Right now its open on the floor of my living room.

Seconded! (no wait, given how many others have said about the same thing, more like 3 hundredth-ed!).

I was in Montreal at a conference, and even if I had remembered that morning (didn't until the next day), I'm not sure I could have justified being at my terminal during the 90 minute window before it sold out.

I just do NOT understand a business model that would stop production on a product that sold out in under two hours. Do they not want to make profit? Or are the employees there now the same people selling these hand-over-fist on eBay?!? I guess that's perfectly legal (never heard of price fixing laws for toys), but it does suck and certainly does not engender loyalty.

Oh well, hopefully the rumors so far of a 2nd production run will come true. I CAN imagine that they might just seriously not want to over-produce, so perhaps they can well gauge the size of the next run based on the comments and how quickly the first one sold.

You'd think if they were going to do so, they'd do so soon, though, while people are still chomping at the bit for it...

...unless of course they are still hoping to clean out some more wallets via eBay...

(Personally, I have collected every Legion appearance and item since and including adventure #247, but I will not on principal allow myself to be ripped off by paying a premium for a product that only recently was available for nearly half the current asking price. So there are stil a lot of us that won't overpay on eBay but will be glad to pay the proper market price.)

The Legion has finally arrived! It was about two weeks that it took them to reach Germany. Funnily enough, I had to pick them up at the local customs office cause Mattel did not put the actual bill on the outside - though there was a description there actually stating the price for the box and shipping... don't ask me, this was a typical act of German bureaucracy.

But thus, I had a funny meeting with a nice customs officer who very painstakingly noted every detail... "This is a twelve pack, but the officer in Frankfurt stated there are 14 figurines... now how many are there?" "Well actually, there are 13, if you don't count the invisible one..."

Finally, after paying 30 € for taxes (but no customs) I took the box home where my daughter greedily wanted to open it...

My favorite figurines are Colossal Boy (impressive!) and Wildfire, I very much like Chameleon Boy who looks way better than the old DC Direct version, Brainiac 5, Lightning Lad and ME Lad. I'm not so sure about the faces of Cosmic Boy, Karate Kid and Ultra Boy, though, who are looking very much alike. Saturn Girl is very skinny...

Anyway a great package! One minor quibble: Does anybody else feel that the white in the costumes of Saturn Girl, Karate Kid and Lightning Lad is rather grey? The costumes are looking as if they have been washed way too often :-) A side effect of the long journey or does Mattel have problems with real "white"?

And this is how my Legion scenario looks right now... guess I really have to look for a new background, though... -

Their posability is excellent. They have so many articulation points, more than I've ever seen on any other action figure. Four on every arm and leg! Their durability though is seemingly not that good. When I tried to pose Brainiac 5, he immediately lost an arm - I was a little frustrated about that cause that is not supposed to happen when you carefully handle your new purchase. Have to find some glue now to reattach the arm in some way that does not show too much [Frown]

Did anybody else have such a little accident with their new Legion toys?

I just took another look at my Legion set, and yes all of the whites on the figures are actually grey. Then I compared them against a Batman Legacy Mr Freeze I just got last week, and the Freeze figure has bright whites in it. So whatever plant was in charge of the Legion set production run botched up the whites.

Thanks for the info, though this just makes me want the set even more . [Frown]

Sorry to hear about your B5, I'd be pretty bummed ... important safety tip for the rest of us (once we get them, that is).

BTW, I think your Devil's Tower background looks surreal, which is exactly the look I'd expect for heroes from the future battling it out...

Also, thanks for your story about the customs officer ... "13 if you don't count the invisible one"... hilarious! (even more so for anyone who has ever dealt with a German customs officer!) Made my day.

So this should be something which we should be giving feedback to Mattel, shouldn't we? I can live with the greyish Karate Kid (hey, that's what comes with constant fighting!) but should they some day produce a grey Phantom Girl I would be very frustrated...

...the grey Saturn Girl is bad enough, but at least this version of her does not constantly fall down like the previous one...

Hey, now that there is a new Cosmic Boy I finally let my daughter play with the old one and she was quite enthusiastic about the magnetic hands. I really have to say that I also liked this feature a lot. The very first Legion DC Direct set was somewhat special - LL with the exchangeable arm, Cosmic Boy with the magnetic hands and Saturn Girl who had nearly no articulation points and constantly fell down.

Sort of on-topic. The blog Boing Boing links to an article about Wired and Creative Commons. Some older Legion figures appear in the second row of the accompanying photo.

Thought some other fans might enjoy seeing it.

I wish I had gotten Invisible Kid though. Actually, my DCD Legion is in storage, it's possible I did, but can't recall for sure.

I agree that the new figures beat the old -- hands down, but I thought DCD did an okay job with SA Colossal Boy and Timber Wolf. Those versions of the characters, though, just don't compare with their dynamic 70s looks.

The 12 piece set will be available again! Go to

mattycollector.com

for details!

The gist of it is that on Dec. 15th (a Thursday), the set goes on sale again!

But just what is the "burst" that you may or may not get because they don't have a shipping system from the 21st century?

Posted by Mystery Lad on :

I think it's either a sticker on the box or new art added to the second production run.

Posted by Colossal Boy on :

Yea it's just a sticker on the box to indicate that it's not from the original run.

Also a reminder that this set re-issue is not the end of Legion for Mattel. next year Mattel will bring us a Starman/Star Boy figure as a monthly release in the DC subscription plan. If you didn't buy the subscription, supposedly Mattel will be selling a limited quantity of the subscription figures but at a higher price. No word yet on what month this figure will be released.

Wait, where did you read that about the subscription. Have they announced any other figures?I haven't seen any news about that since that went on sale? Is there a link someone where?

I'm going from memory here, but I believe the announced figures for the 2012 subscription are Flash Jay Garick, Atrocius, Poison Ivy, Starman/Star Boy and Metron with chair (Metron will only be available to subscribers). There's supposed to be a figure released each month starting in the spring, but the release order has not been revealed yet.

The deal with Thom is that he's supposed to come with two interchangeable heads so you can have his JSA look and his legion look.

Ehm... doesn't such a figure already exist? If you take a closer look at my Legion scenario picture (page 22) then you will see Starman on the left side - and he did come with an interchangeable head as well. But that one I did get via my regular comic book store, not from Mattel. It is a bit larger than the other figures, though.

Anyway, I really do hope that all of you who missed out on the first attempt will be luckier the second time around! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you on December 15th! [Smile]

The Starman figure you reference was released by DC Direct as part of a JSA Alex Ross wave. I passed on that wave. Did it come with a masked head and an unmasked head? I think the scale for those JSA figures was 7" (to match up with the Justice line), so there may be scale issues between that figure and the Mattel Legion figures, which I think are 6" scale.

Posted by Chemical King on :

Yes, one of the heads was "star" masked, the other head was with the bearded face we love [Smile]

I don't know why DC is doing its figures in different sizes though. Starman is huge, though compared to the slightly larger Mattel figures he looks better than in interaction with the way smaller DC Direct classic Legionnaires... don't see the sense in it.

<pant> *wheeeze* <pant> <pant> *wheeeeeze* (gasp)...

hwOAh mygosh...

Got one!(!!!!)

that was one of the most harrowing, helpless
feelings I've had in a LOOOONG time...waiting for it to refresh...would it? would it? Come ON...

Finally got to the sale screen, put LSH12 into cart, then mid-order, it went into refresh mode again... exCRUCiating wait...

Then, I make it to the last step, and there's that "type the 2 words you see all-blurry here" code... one of my words was "nisader"...is that a word? Aren't these supposed to usually be English words? Finally, in a panic, I just typed what I thoguth I saw (the 'ni' weren't at ALL clear), and it went through.

(Just checked Dictionary.com, no "nisader". When it's that distorted, how can you be sure you're typing the right thing if it isn't an actual word?)

FINally, thankfully, my order made it in at 12:09, and I had been on the site and logged in waiting since 11:00.

MAN, that was tough.(!)

I hope it sells out far less quickly this time, I hate to think of others being disappointed (hopefully, being marked as "2nd production run" will reduce its collector's value enough that those of us who just want to have it because we are LSH fans can get one, without all the for-profit speculators swiping them up.)

These sorts of CAPTCHAs are words taken from book-scanning projects that the machines didn't recognise.

Moreover, only one of them is the actual test. The other is an unrecognised word for future tests...

oh boy....this morning....i finished my shower and saw my clock telling me its "8:50 am" and then I was like oh my gosh...then I went to grab my lap top and put it on my high dresser so I can keep my eyes on it...then went to the website... at 9:00 am..sharp...due to extremely high traffic...I was like oh no!!! I was using Safari and had to open another window - Firefox- and oh no...traffic....groan so had to leave them both open...and they automatically refreshed the pages after each 5 seconds...I was waiting and waiting and its 9:06 am...groan...so I had to go back to bathroom to shave my beard...and kept going back to laptop ....its 9:15 am...still refreshed the pages. groan....

then when I finished shaving my neck and saw that the website came on...oh oh I am in!!

then I had to type it fast and furious..making sure that I get the clubhouse ready to be ordered and paid. I made it through! ah.....

then I got an email confirmation that its being processed and ordered. ah....all of them finished at 9:30 am and I was late to my work. (yeah its worth of it. [Smile] )

now can't wait to get it - hopefully before Xmas or New Years .

ah...so I can relax! ahhh...

Glad you got one, ML! Especially as it was you who tipped us off to the new offering ... busy as I am, I really think I might have missed it otherwise, so thanks again!

Also glad, of course, to see that superboymddjr got one also! I do hope the inability to add it to cart now doesn't mean it's sold out...but you can add everything else, so doesn't look good..

Yay! Happy so many of you got a set this time! And maybe with your set, the costumes will actually be white instead of gray? Hmmmmm...

Remember to be careful with those upper arm joints, though. A colleague of mine managed to glue my Arms Fall Off Brainiac in the meantime, but it's still a shame when they are damaged.

Now that this second set sold out this quickly again.... will someone finally realize that there is a Legion fandom out there willing to spend huge amounts of money on their hobby - and will they start to work on a second set? Maybe even featuring some female, non-anorectic Legionnaires? Still hoping there [Smile]

Chemical King - allright thanks for the tip. We will be careful when we get to play with those action figures. and geez...I really hope that Mattel will consider a 2nd wave but will they come in a clubhouse or a bigger Legion clubhouse (the 2nd one?) *gulp*

I STILL want those females Legionnaires...Poor Saturn Girl, all alone while those macho men go out in action! I will guarantee that once they get Dawnstar, Princess Projectra, Triplicate Girl (especially her!), Dream Girl....whoa!!!! *BOOM* sold out in 5 minutes.

say, anyone who already got the set, I am curious, once you ordered, how long does it take you to arrive home? one week or two weeks?

With the second production run now officially sold out and with this set orignally planned to be 24 figures (and with 2 Duo Damsels), surely some pre-production work had already been done for the other 12 figures that ended up getting dropped. And hopefully with that having been done, it should allow Mattel to put another legion set on the fast track. Maybe we hear something on this possible second set during the
toy fair in February.

Even far MORE conspicuous: the LSH12 set currently stands (as of Friday night) as the ONLY item from the Dec 15 sale that is sold out, this despite it being By FAR the most expensive item.

If someone at Matty isn't licking their capitalist lips over the prospect of releasing more, they are truly bereft of all logic.

I can't believe this stuff is selling out within a day. This is a good thing for Legion fans, but as a collector it's ticking me off.

I would love to know exactly how many sets were sold in the two releases. Another set of Legion figures should be guaranteed by all this...

Posted by Mystery Lad on :

Not that it really means anything concrete, but Mattel has said in one of their bimonthly answer-your-questions 'interviews' that they would not be producing more sets as large as the Legion one.

They didn't say anything about smaller sets, though. I suspect there'll be a character or two in the new subscription deal they've got going, maybe somebody like Mon-el or Dawnstar in the regular retail offerings and sets of two, three or more at matty.

Posted by Chemical King on :

Yeah it does NOT have to be another 12 set in my eyes... how about a six Legion girls set, or a Mon-El & Shadow Lass set, Blok and the White Witch... everything would be great as long as they are giving the girls some stronger arms than Saturn Girl... I really have to say that after watching at those dolls for some weeks now, the Saturn Girl figure is by far the least fun to look at...

Hey, does anybody have an idea why they gave Brainy the largest chest? [Smile] He looks rather strong than bright [Smile]

On another board, toyguru or fangirl 2.0 stated that the first set was very challenging and that NO MORE 12-PACKS OF ANY TYPE are planned.

I do think that the success of the boxed set will ensure more Legionnaire figures of some sort. My pick would be a female 5 or 6-pack -- maybe anchored by 70s Supergirl to build up the team. I can see Mon-El and Dawnstar in the sub though.

Indeed. I've been compaining about the toothpick arms on the female figures for quite some time. Yet, they are still in use. That and the fact that I never liked the Giffen outfit -- makes Saturn Girl the weakest link of the entire set.

Yea this set was basically the equivalent of two DCUC waves. It really bottlenecked things from the Four Horsemen all the way through production. I think it almost a year and half after the set was announced that it finally went on sale.

The nice thing about another 12 pack set is that it would come very close to completing the pre-Crisis Legion. Hopefully a 5 or 6 pack set is still a possibility. Otherwise we're looking 1 or 2 new Legion figures a year, meaning it would be several years before we get close to a full team.

Also I just saw this on EBay and can't believe someone put this up. Hopefully it is just a prank :

Mine arrived a few hours ago! Quite a long journey it took to get here, too. California to Nevada to Indiana to Atlanta to Tennessee, back to Georgia and then to Knoxville...

I'm surprised how much I like Colossal Boy. He looks like a Steve Lightle drawing come to 'life'. I knew I'd love Tenzil and Val (who really should've had articulated hands). Though the Ultra Boy is nothing like he's ever been in a comic, he somehow embodies that brief state of teen-ness when height, musculature, etc. has developed, but a gangly quality still exists. Jo as a sort of space surfer dude.

Superboy's grin is weird. Cosmic Boy doesn't look like I've ever pictured him, but I find the facial sculpt captivating enough that he's like a new version of him.

I am disappointed in the extreme twigginess of Saturn Girl's arms. I was scared I'd break them taking her out of her shell! I guess now I'm glad Mattel *didn't* make more Legion girls, it they'd all have to have this weirdly elongated body with super-skinny arms.

I'd have to say I prefer DC Direct's Imra, as immobile as she is. I really love that Cosmic Boy, too- with his magnetic hands.

Anyway- Proty's fun... Wildfire and T-Wolf look great. Brainy's a good bit brawnier than he should be, but he looks great.

My favorite thing is the clubhouse, though. With those 'ready for transport' messages, it's made me imagine a story around it. It's a neat addition to think that the old clubhouse actually *was* a rocket ship-- one equipped with some sort of state of suspended life support tech. What kind of mission would the LSH have to undertake to use this tech?

Invisible Kid's chamber is both fun and aggravating. I want a figure of him! I guess I could stick the DC Direct one in there... but I don't think it'd 'fit'. Personally, I'd like that uniform Lyle wore in the most recent SECRET ORIGINS, but I don't imagine that's what I'd get. Going by the timing of all the other costumes, I'm surprised they didn't make it Jacques.

Maybe an Espionage Squad set? Lyle and/or Jacques, Phantom Girl, Shrinking Violet and maybe Tellus? That is, if Mattel somehow comes up with a female body that works better.

Whoo, finally got mine today, too ... all the way from southern California to southeastern Connecticut!

First of all: BRILLIANT packaging, though I can see where it may have caused a headache in terms of its size...not quite sure where to put mine myself.

Second point (a question): On the sides of the packages, they state each character's symbol. I believe they have made some up? For Tenzil, they have an "M" with a bite chomped out...NOT what I remember seeing previously. Likewise, Colossal
boy has concentric, rising squares (getting bigger), which also does not look familiar.

Third: to answer Chemical King's question earlier, I did get the new version, and it
does have what I would call "off-white" whites, but not quite what I would call gray... they look more like they are just in need of a run through the laundry.

fourth: Agree that superboy's grin looks weird.

fifth: Saturn Girl's hips are just a bit too wide for the rest of her, I think...probably related to others' perceptions that her arms are too small.

overall, though, I'm thrilled to have this!!!!

As for who I'd like to see next: first, I'd like to FINALLY have, (please!!), an ELEMENT LAD figure!

After that, I agree they should catch up on the girls...I'd think Phantom Girl should be first, then Triplicate Girl, Ayla, Vi, Jeckie, and Shady.

Hee hee! I put Brainy and Jo on my Christmas tree, like ornaments! They're the only ones with holiday appropriate color schemes. Jo looks like he's riding his branch (does that sound dirty?) like the end of Dr. Strangelove.

Did anyone see the Dr. Who Christmas special? I sort of want to read a story where some weird cosmic entity traps legionnaires to put on his Christmas space tree! In giant see-through glass/plastic/technoinvention spheres, of course.

Sounds like a Dr. Mayavale kind of story to me - let's see some pictures [Smile] (this coming from someone who has had action figures in his Christmas trees for over a decade and whose parents actually found some REAL Star Wars tree ornaments on their housefloor last year...)

By the way I totally second your feeling about Colossal Boy, Saturn Girl and all the others. And I'm a little surprised that they did not manage to improve the greyish white on their second run - has nobody told them???

It could be with the symbols a similar situation to awhile back when Mattel put out Metamorpho and Obsdian figures but could use not those names on the products because of rights issues.

For example on the traditional tooth symbol for Tenzil, it could be that somebody in the dental industry has the rights to that imagery.

Mattel has some incentive to keep producing them, but as it is, they've sold all their inventory to make maximum expected profit off the two runs. A third run will have two risks: that greater availability will make the set less desirable to collectors thus driving down sales and that they might not sell out a third set, leaving them with stock on hand. When it comes to a big set like this, I'd be surprised if they wanted to risk not selling out. That's some very expensive inventory.

Part of the problem, as I see it, is that this set is marketed to the collectors, rather than the fans. While there's certainly crossover between those communities, it's the collectors (and secondary merchants who sell to collectors) who are the target for these items. If it was being made for the fans, they would have taken pre-orders and made exactly as many as they needed to meet fan demand. Their interest is in creating a secondary market to drive up demand for their products at their point of sale. Selling out of their inventory is their goal; any product that doesn't sell out is probably considered a failure.

Very good, Director Lad - your points are all well taken. Me, not knowing much about this business, would assume that since the molds are already made and the paint process and packaging has already been established, that it would be easier and cheaper and more profitable to produce more, even at the risk of having a few left over, given the perceived market demand.

I am interested in getting a set, but won't do it at 300%+ markup from a store or eBay reseller.

Actually, that's the case. Once the toy's been sculpted, developed and tooled, it's a lot cheaper to do a new production run because the major expenses have already been absorbed by the first run and the only new cost is the actual prod.

What irritates me the most in this being sold out for the second time within hours is that you have some ebay sellers announcing that they're selling some 30 of them at double the price [Frown]

Shame.

Good news (possibly) for those of you who didn't get one...

the 2nd run has indeed come close to saturating the market on the hoarders/speculators, and there are now people on eBay selling it ("Buy it now") for just under $250, one even with *free shipping*. Considering that the $180 set from Matty still cost me $205 or so with shipping and everything else, this is only just over 20% mark up, far lower now than double the price.

Sadly, none of them offer free shipping to the UK. With shipping, most of those will cost me around $300, not counting possible customs [Frown]

But i'm still looking

On principle alone I won't purchase a set from a re-reseller at even as 'low' as a 20% markup.

If Matty Collector was interested in serving their general customers, and not just their special store customers, they would provide a third run limited to a single purchase per customer and then open up the sales to more later if they have leftovers. If they are selling this set out within hours, it suggests to me they they have drastically underestimated the market demand, and if they produce more, everyone would be satisfied.

If Matty Collector doesn't produce a third run of this set where it is actually possible for some of us to purchase it, I won't even bother with any additional sets, Legion or not, that they may sell in the future.

I paid through the nose on EBay. But now I have a Wildfire, a Colossal Boy, a Matter Eater Lad, a Cockrum Timber Wolf... it's fun. My 9 year old is furious about the Invisible Kid fake out, though.

did anyone attend the ToyFair to find out if we will get more Legionnaires, more specifically, females and aliens?

There were no Legion announcements, though we did see the upcoming Starman figure with his 'Thom Kallor' swappable head.

Honestly, I imagine Thom covers any 'Legion slot' for the first year of the DCUC subscription that may exist. I wouldn't expect to see another Legionnaire before 2013, but I'd love to be wrong.

Many collectors feel that the 2012 sub is half full of figures that would have been in the next CnC wave. So the early announcements were all less than exciting, IMHO. Heck, it took some pressure from collectors to get a Star Boy head variant to the masked Starman figure.

We probably won't see another Legion-oriented figure in 2012 -- even though Starman was really filling the MA JSA slot initially.

But there's seems to be a good bit of demand for Dawnstar, and I would hope the next Legion figurre we get is of a female character. I'd say she has a good shot for the 2013 wave.

They won't even consider more boxed sets until they see how sales are for the 2013 wave. And even then -- nothing as mammoth as the 12-pack.

Did anyone catch the fist episode of the second season of the AMC series Comic Book Men? It featured a Legion fan buying the 12-pack (for $275) and afterwards she and the guys actually discussed the Legion for a few minutes--decrying the lack of female figures, lamenting of how Gim and Vi never became a couple, their favorite artists, and other topics. The one bummer of the segment was noted director Kevin Smith blaming Bouncing Boy for his not becoming a Legion fan...

The 12pack was to be seen in the comic book store of "Big Bang Theory" in season 5 (ep. 5 or 6 I guess). Really made me a little happy to see them in such a high profile show [Smile]

If they should produce a Dawnstar I really hope they make her less anorectic looking than Imra. The more I see Saturn Girl, the less I like her...

I don't know how I missed that discussion on Legion Book men, but nice to see them mentioning that the 12-pack should have feature more female members. Being that it appears that Mattel won't do any more multi-packs (and certainly not another 12 pack), not including more females the first time -- really cheese my ass.

Still holding out hope for Dawnstar this year in the sub, but the most likely females to be announced are Phantom Lady, Vixen and either Fire or Ice. Most of the 2013 sub is rehashes of what DC Direct already produced -- and the above certainly fit into that criteria.

It's a shame that Mattel had such a huge success with the Legion, yet seems to have completely abandoned it -- again.
