Well, Miner, Kent, Abin and I are here. This will be the thread in which we will tell you all about the fun we are having and you are not. Preview night is coming up.

Mllash,

On my train trip here, I crossed the Mississippi on Monday evening. So I wrote a quick note, put it in a bottle and tossed it in the river. Did you get it yet?

well, we survived Preview night. man it was crowded! dunno how the regular con's going to be.

Upper Deck's Vs. card game is going to have a LSH booster pack line, but its release date hasn't been set yet.

The worst burrito in America can be found at the Dallas/Fort Worth airport

When a guy uses the phrase "I feel JOHNNY LAW is in the house!" 9 times in a 2-minute span at ever escalating volume, it's best just to leave the room.

San Diego has a Transportation Vigilante, who roams the night, dispensing invaluable info on bus and trolley schedules to tourists and other lost folk. Seriously. I think he even had a cape.

Why am I not surprised that, even though he's not in San Diego, Scott still is still the best source for inside info?

preview night was crowded, damn crowded!

I'm not even going to try to get out on the floor on the weekend; I'll go right to the upstairs programming. I think the con's outgrown even this mega-convention center.

I'm leaving soon, eeeeee!!

Btw, I'll be sans bike since it refuses to fit in my car. One less thing to worry about. [Wink]

Uhm, yeah. No more 'net for me!! See you around 8pm. I'll be calling Abin. Ye be warned. [Good]

Day one:
easier, actually, to get around vs. preview night.

I went to the Battlestar:Galactica (1st of 2) panel, and stuck around for the beginning of the Rosario Dawson panel that followed. They didn't make a winning presentation re: her new comic, but she's delightful (of course).

This Battlestar panel focused on Richard Hatch, the music gy and the science advisor; we only got a small snipet from season 3, of Baltar lamenting. We also saw a 4-minute segment of Hatch's 90s BG effort; but I guess that's been shown several times before.

I went to the Batton Lash/Kyle Baker/Phil Fogliopanel on self-publishing, too. THAT was great! It reignited my enthusiasm for my own comic projects, many of which have been stalled for years.

I touched base with LEGION-John and met his friend Raven; they can't make dinner with us tonight (but hopefully Mechana and her Shawn can)

I found some back-issue bargains (despite a HUGE show floor (Abin estimates 10 times Boston's) there aren't a lot of back-issue dealers; sooooo many toys, games, manga, new product, film/TV, etc):

Adventure 308, 316, 354, 368, Best of DC Digest 24 (LSH), Action 391,, Superboy 184 and Lois Lne 50. Also some Gaiman I'd missed, a new Eddie Campbell GN, and a few other things.

PS Make Abin tell the Greg Rucka story!

I/we have even less reason to like him now. I'll let Abin say the rest.

C'mon Abin!

Tell all, you can't possibly keep us hanging now.

After 4 hours of delays, Caliente's train arrived in San Diego at 11 p.m., after being stuck in Anaheim because of brake problems.

At one point, Monkey-Eater Lad and I were ready to drive up and get her, but just as we were letting her know that the train started moving, so we stayed at the restaurant with Mechana and her fella. Abin had to leave early, L-John had other plans, and Quis and Miner apparently had a different interpretation of our plans (and were sans cell phone).

"The Greg Rucka Story;"

Chapter 1: Hatred of the Legion

It was a crowded and noisy convention. I was in line to meet Mark Waid, who was signing autographs at the DC Booth. As I approached the booth I searched the freebie table desperately for something, anything, Legion Related for Mark to sign. But ALAS, there was not even a scrap of an old discarded pink bikini in sight. Trepiditiously, (if that's a word, and if it isn't it should be) I approached Mr. Waid empty handed.

In my best awe-struck fan-boy voice I nervously asked Mr. Waid why there was no Legion Related Material at the booth.

At that point, Greg Rucka, who was seated next to Mark interupted with the comment "Just Come Back In 2-3 HUNDRED Years!"

Mark was not rude enough to make any comment and signed a Blue Beetle Poster for me.

BUT! In that moment my rage and hatred was born. I knew in my heart of hearts that there would be a reckoning.

Chapter 2: Greg Rucka Must Die! (or at least be vilified in an upcoming LMBP Tag Team Story)

Not to let the guys steal all the glory...

I MET GEOFF!! [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Big Grin] Yay~

But, I have seriously exciting news from on high--
-- I talked to Steve Wacker for, like, half an hour. And, even though he hasn't seen Firefly or Serenity, I can forgive him because he was waaaay nice to me and talking to him got me a free Manhunter shirt from the writer whose name I can't pronounce or spell (it really was exciting).
-- Despite his hatred for the Legion, Rucka was the one at the 52 panel who confirmed that "the Legion" will be showing up. (I asked the question.) There was some confusion at first, though, so I don't know if that's the Legion of Super-Heroes or L.E.G.I.O.N. or whatever. They did promise a backup Legion of Super-Heroes origin story, though.
-- Last, but not least: Convention goal met!! I managed to get Geoff to sketch me a Flash!! It was a quick one but it's actually really good (no, seriously, it is). Waid sketched me a Batman, too, which is funny and has an eyebrow. Don't ask me why... but, yeah. It was exciting. [Big Grin] I only wish I'd had a camera, so my stalking could've been documented on tape. Though, Abin does have some funny pictures from my question asking at the JLA/JSA panel.

Speaking of the panel-- a few JSA-related spoilers:
Click Here For A SpoilerObsideon will be on the Justice Society of America team!! Jesse Chambers will be important to the team-- Wacker told me not to forget who her mother was, so... yeah! I'm excited!
Also, in the already announced JSA/JLA annual thingy-- there will be a third team and it will probably be Infinity, Inc.

One last thing, we all wanted to congradulate MEL for getting his art into the Convention program!! It's really great. [Big Grin] We're so proud. *sniffsniff*

Okay, I've rambled enough now. Love from the Con. I'm sure pictures will surface soon enough... *hinthint* Abin and MEL *hint*

Last nights dinner was great, a little quiet by LW Standards, but Great none the less.

We dined at a little place called the Bay Beach Cafe on Coronado Island.

In Attendance: Abin, Kent Shakesphere, Caliente, Outdoor Miner, Quislet Esq, L.E.G.I.O.N.John & Ravenette84, Mechana & Antiquated Computers Lad, and the Guests of Honor: Nightcrawler & Mogli.

Fireworks did go off for a few minutes in the middle of the dinner and at one point Gary mentioned Shutting Down Legion World, but other than that brief episode it was just a nice quiet dinner.

After dinner several Legionworlders decided to semi-skinny-dip in the pacific ocean but that's a tale for another day.

well, me, Abin and Quis have left the con to get Quis to the airport. Miner is the last hold-out of the Coronado Quartet.

Abin and I (especially Abin) went back-issue wild today; my top prize was Action 267 for $18! No "yeo turds off" but a lot of last-day deals nonetheless.

And I may have recruited a new LWer (knock on wood), a indy-comic pro who's a big Grell Legion fan.

So who was gifted with an inflatable farm animal at this con dinner? Isn't that a new Legion World tradition? Or does that only happen when Cobie attends? [Big Grin]

Posted by Caliente on :

I think that's a special Cobie-inspired thing. We missed him, too. *sniff, sniff*

Okay, s'more fun con tidbits now that I'm home...
-- I enlisted Morrison and his wife to help me find Wacker at one point. His wife is mega-nice and they have matching accents of scariness. It was just about the cutest thing ever.
-- It's wrong when a man wearing Supergirl's current costume can pull it off better than you yourself ever could. Wrong but oh-so-right.
-- Paul Jenkins loves me because I read Flogging a Dead horse... and am a girl. His son is the Cutest. Kid. Ever.
-- Mike Carlin should never ever say anything about Geoff Johns rubbing against me ever again ever. Geoff is married and Mike is old. >< Just no. No, no, no, no, no. Seriously, no.
-- Yaks are soon to be an endagered species.
-- Judd Winick proposed to Brad Meltzer {or possibly the other way around} when they first met in college. Theirs is a love that is based around She-Hulk. I really think that's all that needs to be said about that.
-- Brad Meltzer's dad is the cutest thing ever. He wears baseball shirts and caps that have his son's work on them-- I want a "!pots namtaB" shirt, too!! He even signed stuff at one point-- it really was adorable.

A couple more spoilers, this time about JLA, Flash and the Suicide Squad mini:
JLA: Click Here For A SpoilerThere's a decent chance, I think, that Vixen will show up as a member of the new JLA. That's the impression I got, anyway.
Flash: Click Here For A SpoilerBart will be impulsive once more. He's just "dealing with some stuff" right now. {Understatement, what?} The writers love the Rogues, especially Trickster and Gorilla Grodd.
Suicide Squad: Click Here For A SpoilerThe roster includes Mirror Master, Icicle, Tattoo Man {the original} and some person I'd never heard of before. And the Squad that appears at the start, in Checkmate and whatnot, will not be the one at the end... I have a sneaking suspicion about who will die but I know that Mirror Master won't.

Okay, I've rambled enough!! It was just so fun. [Big Grin] First Con and all that jazz. Oh!! And MEL was telling the truth-- Geoff does now have competition for my love. What can I say? He didn't make any attempts to win me over when I was talking to him. [No] Silly man. Clearly does not know what he's missing. >.> Yes.

Also, why is Jay Garrick the only Flash whose costume doesn't look like it belongs in a gay bar? He's got the jeans (blue pants, anyway), t-shirt and cool hat! The others have... lots of red and yellow spandex.

I'm just sayin'... they should've honored the man at the Flash panel. (66th Anniversary anyone?)

Well, I am home now and the convention is in the past.

The dinner Saturday night was almost perfect. Unfortunately Monkey-Eater Lad wasn't able to join us. (and the special of the night was Rhesus Ribs in an Orangutan sauce) The after-dinner dip into the Pacific Ocean was fun. I have not been disappointed in meeting any Legion Worlder. And I hope L.E.G.I.O.N.John's friend Raven does visit us here.

I mostly attended panels. (I am getting to old to just walk around all day). The first panel I attended was the Spotlight on George Perez. He is a funny guy and very appreciative of the fans. He said that he does want to draw the Legion and that talks are in the works, but after his commitment to Brave & Bold is over. Which prompted me to get in line to ask a question. (Although Caliente is Question Queen of the con) My question was "which is your favorite Legionnaire and/or which legionnaires do you like to draw?" George answered (paraphrase in spite of the use of quotes) "Chameleon Boy - am I showing my age? it's Chameleon now right? Bouncing Boy (pause for thinking) And the Legion Babes. What 12 year old boy wouldn't like to see the Legion Babes? or 52 year old man?" I didn't have the heart to reply "me". That was my big moment at the con.

hey Guys, just made it back from SD, had the time of my life. Vegas was fun but hot, got to meet Kent, Stu, and Abin. Star Trek:the Experience was great. the rides were enjoyable. liked the Borg 4D ride a little better than the Klingon ride, and the food at Quarks was very, very good although pricey, i recommend the Warp core breach, Stu and i had it and it was good.
the Con was awesome!!! i knew it was big, but i didn't know it was that frikking huge, went to as many pannels as i could but i missed the DC one's. got to see Richard Donner at the Superman: through the ages pannel. Noel Neal still looks very beautiful. time has been very good to her. got to sit in at the Bruce timm pannel. but i sooo missed the LSH animated preview. [Frown] but i did enjoy the Boondocks pannel, and then i got to finally meet some other LW'ers. Quinslet,Miner, Nightcrawler, and the every glorious Caliente.
we hung out on the outdoor patio, talk for a bit, found out that Cali was a Geoff Johns stalker. and everyone got to meet my friend Raven. Raven and Cali seemed to hit it off like they were old friends.
at dinner i got to meet Mechana & Antiquated Computers Lad, and Mogli. good food great company, and yeah there were fireworks, but the "skinny dipping" part was started by Abin, he was the first to run to the water ripping his clothes off. so the rest of us just looked at each other shrugged and said: "When in San Diego". but seriously had the best time of my life. can't wait till next year.
and Nightcrawler, my nickname for you is Commander Kool, you are so quiet and easy going, and to quote "Fast times at Ridgemont High" you act like no matter where your at this is the cool place to be.

Thanks John! It was a pleasure meeting you too.

Ohh and i forgot!! i made the Ultimate comic book Faux Pas. i mistook Kurt Busiek for Mark Waid. Kurt was at the DC booth it was like 5 minuets to closing time and i said "hello Mr. Waid, it's nice to meet you." and he replied: "Ummm, i'm not Mark Waid" he turns his Con-badge around and it said Kurt Busiek on it, my mouth dropped and i grovled for a few minutes apologizing, we had a laugh and i walked away in shame. and later i burned my comic book fan boy identity card. *hangs head in shame* [Frown]

Looks like I'm the last to leave! I'm sitting in Old Town, sipping a margarita, trying to arrange meetings with college folk en route to Montreal tomorrow. My flight's a red eye at 10:25 tonight.

After we dropped Miner at the airport yesterday morning, Abin went to drop off the minivan, while I picked up my day-and-a-half rental: a red Mustang convertable!Despite using gobs on suntan lotion, I am a bit sun-burnt!

I drove up the coast to Pismo beach (after a long delay in LA traffic and a short stop in Hollywood), where I caught bautiful Pacific sunset (it was actually chilly! can you believe?), drove east across the mountains (73 miles of nothing (in the dark) but a wild boar (i think) and a half-dozen cars going the opposite way) and overnighted near bakersfild. today: palm springs (the road up the mountains south is a-maz-ing!) and now I'm back to San D.

I'll give more con reflections as I get to it. it's still going ot be a busy week!

Oh sure, NOW you go to Old Town, after I leave! It's charming though, isn't it? Special thanks to Gary who swayed my decision to stay there; we really enjoyed it.

My trip to SD and LA has put me insanely behind at work, but hopefully I'll have time to write up my "memoirs" soon, while they're still fresh. For now, just wanted to say how much I enjoyed meeting everyone from LW. Thanks to Kent Shakespeare, Abin Quank, Monkey Eater Lad, Quislet, Outdoor Miner, L.E.G.I.O.N. John, Caliente, Nightcrawler and guests for being so friendly and welcoming. It was a pleasure to meet you all. Gary: I'm sorry we didn't get a chance to talk more. We should have played musical chairs at dinner so everyone had a chance to visit!

I'm sorry that we couldn't be joined by some other LWers who are particularly special to me. I'm talking about you Scott, Caroline, and of course my good friend Pov. Next year guys!

Is this you guys? From someone else's con report on Friday at the Rock Bottom Brewery:
"Not long after I was seated, a very pretty woman asked me if I was alone, and if she could sit with me while waiting for a table. Naturally, I said yes, and suddenly found myself sharing a table with five other people. Beth, Rob, Kevin, Jeff, and ?, were all internet friends, who knew each other from a Legion of Super Heroes fan site. They were a fun bunch to eat with, and I'm glad I met them. Soon after finishing my dinner though, I left them to finish waiting for their table."

Beth, Rob, Kevin, Jeff, and ?, were all internet friends, who knew each other from a Legion of Super Heroes fan site. They were a fun bunch to eat with, and I'm glad I met them. Soon after finishing my dinner though, I left them to finish waiting for their table."

I knew sending Caliente to ask was the right move.

And he was a real nice guy too.

I've been called worse than "?" Then again, I was the last to arrive, having to find a parking spot.

Welcome, Raven! Glad'ja made it!

I arrived in Albany at 9-ish this morning; the flight from San D to Dulles was very turbulnt and I didn't get much sleep. But I made it, and just had a nap.

It's weird to suddenly be be somewhere without palm trees; how quickly one gets used to them.

PS I finally found a post office at 5 pm on Monday afternoon, in Oxnard. The print I mailed myself got home before I did! I hope the other package arrives/ed safely as well.

Guys, where are the pics and so forth? I've been living vicariously through your tales but like any junkie I need a stronger fix. I'm totally not jealous of all the fun you all had. Cleaning out years of accumulated junk from our room was soo much better.

Nightcrawler said this...

"I was assuming that everyone would understand it's a joke based on when/where it was posted.

Everyone was saying how nice I am and how nice the site was at dinner, that I announced I was giving it up and closing it down on Sunday.

Well, at least they all laughed. Guess you had to be there."

Eeeeek. Don't do dat no mo'.

Scared seven years off me.

Sorry guys but that's all for now. I have to clear some old stuff off of my personal web space to make room for the rest of the pics.

The file size of the pics from my new camera is just plain huge (about 1.5 - 2.2 MB each!)

Help!

Hey Cali is this you?

From Newsarama 5.2 about 52

'There was one weird San Diego experience, though (in the hallway, I think), where some fan made a joke that pretty much matched one of our endings. Needless to say, I had her locked up until next May. After which, I’ll hire her.'

Tell me it is and what you said!

How about scandal lite? (Very lite!)

Quinlan Vos hugged me! Yep, that's as scandalous as my life gets: surreptitous hugs!

For those of you who are not huge Star Wars comics fans, Quinlan Vos was a popular Jedi character in the comics series. I kept seeing this man around the Dark Horse booth at SDCC that people told me was the artists model for Quinlan Vos. When I met him later at a party I asked who he was in real life. He said: "this will be easier", then he hands me a business card, gives me a big squeeze, and disappears into the crowd. Turns out he actually was a male model, that's who he was in real life. So I hugged a model! Shawn even managed to feign jealousy when he found the business card. [Wink]

Posted by Quislet, Esq. on :

From what little I saw, Shawn doesn't have to feign jealousy.

I think I told all my stories already... The exciting ones, anyway. I was amused by how nice Paul Jenkins was just by me telling him that I read Flogging a Dead Horse.

But Abin and MEL-- can you boys email me the pictures you took please? I want a new Facebook picture. (I'll just cut out all the old guys who I took the pictures with. [Wink]

Now that you mention it, it did seem odd that seemingly every restaurant in the area had their own microbrewery.

I did get one for the sketchbook - a Wonder Woman by Irwin Hasen. I figured a book spotlighting Golden Age characters should get at least one genuine GA artist.

I entered an A.C.T.O.R. lottery a few times to try and get a George Perez sketch (he was only sketching for them), but I didn't win. Had I won, I would have asked for a GA Supes. Still, George will be at two other cons I'm attending this year, so there's hope.

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

That would be hell-kewl to get a Perez GA Supes sketch! And sounds like another awesome addition with the Wonder Woman pic.

Legion Worlders who happen to meet Outdoor Miner--you must check this sketchbook out! It really is awesome! I keep meaning to steal this idea for myself but I've only ever been to one con.
