That's easy--

The 70s TITANS, whose h.q. was... a disco!

Posted by Thriftshop Debutante on :

But does the LSH outpower them in disco frockery? Think Cos. Think Pulsar Stargrave (villains count). Think Cal. THINK IMRA'S HAIR!

Posted by MLLASH on :

Nothing outdisco's that one infamous HORNBLOWER outfit. NOthing. "The frock that time wanted to forget but couldn't!"

As for skin, Golden Eagle showed his share of it, and Bette Kane (Bat-Girl/Flamebird) had legs second only to Robin's!

Plus the TITANS one-upped the Legion on the funky-ometer with not one but TWO "heroes of color"! Top that, Legion! 'Course, the Legion's brotha sure showed a lot more skin. But the Titans' sista had butt honey-blasters!!

So the Titans win!

Posted by Bicycle Repair Man on :

Depends on what you consider "winning", in this contest ...

Posted by MLLASH on :

Plus no one in the LSH could match the disco-y ivory flesh and magenta magnificence of Harlequin's hair! They rejected the one hero who could in S/LSH # 201! And did the Legion have anyone who blasted villains with high-powered lip-shaped projectiles? Nooooooooooooo!

Posted by MLLASH on :

Buuut...well, no one could match the 70s Legion for amount of bell-bottom-bedraped characters.

Posted by MLLASH on :

And I remember when Garth, Imra, Salu and Gim were doing the space-hustle during the Klordny festival.

Posted by Omni Craig on :

I'd have to go with the Legion too!

Tyroc's costume sonic-screamed the 70s, as did Tinya's. And don't get me started on Imra's pink disco boots!! [Love] She was a hottie!!

Come to think of it, Dream Girl had a 'do in S/LSH 237 that instantly reminded me of Farrah Fawcett...

I demand some pictorial documentation.

Posted by MLLASH on :

Nonsense, Arms!

You'll simply have to be pressured into buying the TTs back issues like Eryk Davis Ester was!

Delight & Joy await you!

Posted by MLLASH on :

The Titans did a bit of hustlin' themselves when The Fiddler attacked them!

Posted by l.e.g.i.o.n.JOHN on :

C'mon that's a no-brainer, with Phantom girl's bellbottoms and Tyroc's funky open shirt-chest revieling-with the gold chains on the front-wearing outfit, and remeber most of the guys had those funky "Grell" sideburns. you can't get more disco-riffic than that. [Tyroc] [Phantom Girl]

Posted by Thriftshop Debutante on :

Remember when certain Legionnaires went dancing in an exotic aquarium filled with sense-depressant liquid and then went to a hologram show with chemical-enhanced air?

Posted by MLLASH on :

They were higher than Speedy during a GREAT FROG performance!

Posted by Thriftshop Debutante on :

Backsliding Brin!

Posted by MLLASH on :

Brin may have had his li'l nibbles of the Lotus Fruit but only the 70s TITANS can claim a member who perfromed illicit sex acts for drugs! THATS disco-ey!

Posted by Thriftshop Debutante on :

TEMPORAL TECHNICALITY! Whatever Roy did or didn't do, did it take place in a 70s comic? (If he 'fesses up to it now, it took place 10 or so years ago...which isn't the 70s!)

Posted by MLLASH on :

Hmm. Well, Speedy's drug addiction is certainly catalogued during the early 70s in Green Lantern, around 1970-1972.

IIRC, his admission to doing certain... things while an addict came during the ARSENAL mini of the 90s.

Posted by Thriftshop Debutante on :

Disqualified!

Posted by MLLASH on :

Nonsense!

Posted by KidChaos on :

So does the 70's Blacksploitation award go to Mal or Tyroc?

Posted by MLLASH on :

I demand a cracked-out-Speedy-performing-illicit-sex-acts graemlin!

Posted by Thriftshop Debutante on :

Next exhibit, disco-counselor!

Posted by MLLASH on :

I'd hand the Blaxplotation award to Tyroc, I think.

Although Karen Beecher-- The Bumblebee-- has the corniest origin in superhero history.

She donned the guise of the Bumblebee in order to attack and whip the ass of her boyfriend Mal with the Titans present, proving to him that his "friends" The Titans didn't care a whit about him! Of course, The Titans stood up for their brotha, proving Karen to be some sort of nutty extremist!

Posted by MLLASH on :

So what's the tally so far...?

Most bell-bottoms: LEGION

Discoteque Headquarters: TITANS

Most male members with no shirt: TIE

Most male members baring legs: TIE

Members with magenta hair: TITANS

Blaxplotation award: LEGION

Most members of color: TITANS

Most members in a jazz-disco-rock fusion band: TITANS

Sex for drugs: TITANS

On-panel dancing: TIE

It pays to research, kids!

"Yeah, they call me Speedy, and I guess I'm a super-hero. I'm 18 now -- but when I was 13, I was just like you. I was taking everything that came down the pike. Pot, hash, coke, LSD, heroin -- everything.

"...and though my body cleansed itself, maybe my mind still hasn't. I mean, I was a superhero, and I was stealing to support my habit. Man, you don't know how guilty I felt."

It's not really fair to allow Cham, Shady and Brainy, since the Titans didn't dabble in alen worlds until the 80s revival. By the time Dawnstar came along, TTs was in Cancelled City, and as you stated, Val only counts depending on who the artist was.

Most Unfrozen Caveman Mechanic members: TITANS

Like Speedy's gonna tell some little twerp about all the tricks he turned!

Mon-El pulls that up even!

And may I add that "The Phantom Zone" sounds like a disco!

Maybe someone was fibbing all this time about how dreadful it was.

Posted by Blacula on :

There's been precious little talk about Duela Dent in this so-called "disco" thread so far!

Surely she is the most disco-rific character ever! I mean, she occasionally fought crime on roller-skates!

For the love of God people - ROLLER SKATES!

Was she before Dazzler? I'll have to look that one up.

Posted by Blacula on :

And if anyone has Mal's brief Hornblower outfit available please post it!

One look at that disco monstrosity and its "Case Closed!"

Posted by MLLASH on :

Yeah-- Duela's roller skates DEFINITELY predate Dazzler!

To go out in an outfit like that is the true meaning of heroism!

BWAhahaha!

Yes, as I stated, NOTHING out-discos THAT outfit, in ANY timeline!

Posted by Mystery Lad on :

Hmmm... clearly, Tyroc patterned his costume after this... inspired... ensemble.

Hornblower-- Tyroc's sonic screams-- is there a connection?

Did Mal get his belt from Duela?

Reading this has lit up a memory I can't retrieve. Did we ever find out where Karen got her Bumblebee equipment? Was it STAR labs?

Posted by Nightcrawler on :

I believe Marv Wolfman retconned it as STAR Labs, yes.

Posted by Mystery Lad on :

Hmmm. If he retconned it, where did she originally get her bee-stuff?

Posted by Nightcrawler on :

She just invented it and sewed it into her costume.

[Actually, I may be remembering wrong. I looked and it remians a mystery, so I guess Marv didn't retcon anything.]

Thanks, Gary.

Maybe this mystery'll be solved in the pages of the SECRET FILES coming out later this month-- the one that's supposed to examine Duela Dent's back story.

I think it'd be fun if Karen had some sort of connection to the JLA villainess the Queen Bee from whatever-the-hell-planet-she-was-from.

Hi Mystery Lad!

If i recall from Zazzala's (QB) first apperarance in JLA (vol. 1) 23, she was an inhabitant of the planet Korll, altho whether she was its ruler, i don't have a clue - sorry

I don't know much about Mal, as he is a character who hasn't appeared very much in the comics I have. So it would appear his superpower is having a "horn of wonder".

Hmmmm...I'd love to know what this mysterious horn of wonder can do!

I guess having a horn of wonder is pretty disco, come to think of it.

That costume is hideous! He must have said he liked it just to humour Karen. Either that or he has the worst taste of any superhero ever!

I'm sure having the horn of wonder made up for it though. Whatever that was.

[Gasp]

Posted by Thriftshop Debutante on :

I dunno either. Guess it's a wonder-what-that-horn is.

Posted by Thriftshop Debutante on :

About Mal's costume, though...yes it is a feast for the eyes, but it's so...covering!

Posted by MLLASH on :

ABOUT MAL'S HORN

In the REAL, ORIGINAL, PRE-CRISIS aka THE STORIES THAT COUNT Teen Titans (# 45, to be specific)....

Mal was fatally wounded, and in a NEARnear-death experience, he challenges Azrael (the Angel of Death, not the sucky one later introduced by Wolfman) to a fistfight/wrestling match.

When Mal defeats Azrael in battle, the angel Gabriel presents Mal with his horn-- actually a ram's horn known as a shofar.

Gabriel's horn has the power to make Mal the equal of his opponents, or to even the odds for Mal (as it did when it teleported the Titans to his side when he was being ganged up on).

In the stupid post-crisis tales, the horn was something Mal and Karen invented. **YAWWWN!**

Ah, those were the days . . .

. . . when female super-heroes designed and made costumes for their boyfriends.

. . . when someone thought that attacking a super-hero team would prove how much that team didn't care about said boyfriend.

. . . when someone got away with attacking a super-hero team by admitting they were mistaken.

. . . when "that must remain my secret for now" was short-hand for "the writer didn't think up an answer."

. . . when fans could design super-hero costumes and get credit. (Wonder if Dave actually got paid?)

I'm pretty sure he's going to be for that for all eternity.

(My other possible joke was to claim that I wasn't going by that last name anymore, my family couldn't take the shame. I didn't want to risk the cosmic fate gods and have any stray lightning bolts come my way. I had nothing to do with it!)

Posted by He Who Wanders on :

I don't hold it against Dave Elyea for designing the thing--he was just a fan doing what fans do. Somebody, however, decided that Mal should wear it. That person should be in the Witless Protection Program.

(And if Dave got money for his creation, more power to him!)

Is it really any worse that collosal boys original costume, or Element lads?

Plus, if he had any other gadgets to go with the horn, wouldn't that be disco-tech?

Posted by Quislet, Esq. on :

I liked Colossal Boy's original costume.

Hey, i liked PP's with the silver beehive, but that doesn't mean it wasn't silly. That was part of the fun to me. [Wink]

whoa whoa....the Legion wins hand down - know why????

Phantom Girl's bell bottom, Klordny, Saturn Girl's pink bikini and Farrah hairdo, Tyroc s costume.....the best of them all:

Cosmic Boy's Black corsette-like Costume!!!! who can top that?!?!?

PS Hornblower's costume - ewwwww.

Posted by Mystery Lad on :

I don't think so-- the Titans had a member who was a full-fledged go-go dancer (Lilith).

You can't get anymore disco than that.

Posted by Director Lad on :

I don't know. I think Lash's original point seals the deal: the '70s Titan's headquarters was an actual disco. How much more disco can you get?

OH MY GOSH, INDEED! That's amazing! I can't believe Dave Elyea has resurfaced for us after all these years! How cool is Facebook for bringing both him and Tom Fatsi back into our lives!

I love his comment about Robin stealing the look for his first Nightwing costume too. I never noticed it before but it's so true.

P.S. You do such a great job on that Great Frog Facebook page, MLLASH! It's much appreciated by this 70s Titans fan.
