Suppose that at the end of the "Death of Superboy" story, Superboy didn't die. He continued to be a part of the Legion, with the whole Post-Crisis, Pocket Universe explanation.

Would the infamous "No Superboy" edict still have happened? And, if it didn't, how would that have changed the Legion?

I think that the Byrne "anti-Superboy" edict would've stood and the poor guy would've been wiped from existence no matter what, given John's clout at the time.

If he had been allowed to live, however, I don't think that Levitz and Giffen's 5-Year Gap Legion would've been possible, because Superboy would never, ever have accepted letting things get as bad in the U.P. as Reep and the other legionairres did. Remember: Superboy and the original, younger Legion epitomized youthful idealism and the notion that technical advance in the future would lead to utopic civilization.

Yeah, there was no saving the Legion's Superboy. Looking back, I kind of think Earth Prime Superboy was supposed to be the one in the Legion. I mean, what other purpose does he serve?

If Superboy survives, first he has to deal with the fact that his whole life and universe were created specifically to create the Legion. I'm sure he manages to go on, but he has to lose some idealism.

Then, maybe the 5 year gap still happens. I mean, it's tough even for Superboy to fight an economic collapse. I think it would be like the way that Superman has to deal with the way modern ideals have changed in the real world. Superboy probably can't keep the Legion together by himself, especially since he doesn't live in the 30th century. He probably stays in his dimension for a while and makes sure no one lets out any Kryptonian prisoners from the Phantom Zone. When the boys start putting the Legion back together, he'd probably be the most exited member.

But with no need to erase Superboy, Legion 4 never happens. The 5 year later Legion plays out differently without the legend of Valor and all the retconning. I'll leave it to more creative minds to figure out how things would have turned out after that.

With Superboy still around, the "conspiracy" story would obviously have gone much differently. I suspect Superboy himself would've been one of the instigators against the Time Trapper. I also think the discovery that Superboy's future wasn't what the Legionnaire all thought it was going to be would've had interesting consequences for Luornu, who had given up her love for him one the assumption that she knew she would never be able to have him. Once that certainty is gone, what happens?

Actually, with Superboy around the Conspiracy might never have happened, since revenge for his death was one of its primary motivations.

Interesting idea about Luornu, though.

I like your new monicker and icon, by the way. But you'd better be careful about "horning" into Li'l Rhino's territory. [Big Grin]

If Superboy hadn't died then I wouldn't have
been so sad ... [Frown]

Somewhere I heard that the original plan was
for Superboy Prime to go to the Legion's time.
I think that would have been really interesting
... imagine being a comic book fan and the most
powerful Legionnaire of all at the same time!

Of course, the fact he'd be so much younger than
the rest of the Legion and lacking in experience
in the use of his powers could have lead to some
interesting stories ... and if they gave him a
different personality from the original one ...

Sigh. Oh for missed opportunities!
