Hi, this is actually my first post on this board, but I am a long time fan of the Legion, and I am also a big fan of the new series and hope that it can last.

Now for the purpose of my message...

Is Karate Kid a new member of the JLA?

In the latest issue of Wizard, there is a large pic of about 40 or so heroes that are shown as being potential members of the new JLA. Way in the back of the team pic is Karate Kid (current version). I wonder if there isn't a Kara/Val swap in the near future...

Any insight from anyone?

HI Cotton King.

Can't answer your question, but I can say "Welcome to Legion World!"

I hope it's not KK. These time swaps never went over well with me.

Wow. Nice catch.

Click for fullsize image

The image is a bit suspect since Dr. Fate is no longer alive and no longer looks that way. I hope they aren't changing Green Arrow's outfit to that. Yuck.

KK switching eras isn't without precedent.

And DC *does* seem to be on a bit of a 70s jag lately....

LET THE SPECULATION RUN RAMPANT!!!!

Some other interesting inclusions in that picture as well as some very interesting omissions.

I see Tempest, Troia, & Cyborg but no Nightwing Arsenal or Starfire. Could it mean that Dick, Kory & Roy don't survice IC? Or is that maybe Dick wearing the Bat cowl as has been speculated?

Both Supergirl & Power Girl are on that cover. Maybe Kara will only be a part time, time traveling Legionnaire (as in the original Legion)

Is that The Guardian in the center just above Cyborg's left shoulder? That would be cool. Cooler still if that was actually Mal Duncan (who was the Guardian prior to being Herald. [Big Grin]

Nice to see Red Tornado in the picture next to Ralph (who seems to be wearing fishnet stockings at first glance, though I imagine that means Zatanna is standing next to him off cover [Big Grin] )

Is that the new Blue Beetle below KK or is it maybe Bummblebee in a new version of her outfit?

Also nice to see Adam Strange, Black Lightning and the Phantom Stranger included. They have long been JLA allies (and quasi members)

Four Lanterns are depicted (Hal, Kyle, John & Guy) so I guess they all survived IC)

Is that Wally or Bart (or maybe even Barry)? Enquiring minds want to know! [Big Grin]

You can just make out Booster's arm and lower torso, just above the partial body of Diana, so it appears they both survived also.

And finally, is that Metamorpho or Shift? Hmmmmmm...

As for those not depicted...

Besides Dick, Roy and Kory (already mentioned) I find it odd that Barda isn't there next to Mr Miracle. And there is no Superboy (but I wouldn't necessarily expect him to be up for JLA membership) But most surprising, and of most concern to me, there is no Matian Manhunter and no Capt. Marvel Jr!

Is that Arsenal behind the "M" in "America"?

Looks like the new Blue Beetle.

Other interesting tidbits:
I love that the Question is there. Less so that he's colored brown instead of blue.

I like that they have Capt Atom in his silver look - the Kingdom Come looks he has now is ugly.

There's a little person on Ralph's shoulder (the Atom?), but s/he's almost completely in shadow. Hmmm...

Posted by Blockade Boy on :

Well I just spoiled myself a bit and got the trade so now I'm only 6 or so issues behind everyone else.

I reiterate everything anyone ever said about those issues. [Smile]

But I didn't see any hints of time traveling. Maybe that's what the spinner racks are for?

It might be. Does Arsenal have an Omega on his belt?

There are definitely inconsistencies here, though, because Dr. Light (the chick) and Captain Atom shouldn't be able to be in the Justice League.

I'm happy to see Fire, though!! I like her. [Big Grin] And Kyle. And a Flash that is too tall to be Bart. Uhm... yeah.

In "JSA:Classified" #2, Lightning Lad said: "I told Brainiac 5 the time traveling was going to mess with her head. Look at what it did to Karate Kid."

That ended up not being the real Lightning Lad(?), but this could be either a clue or a red herring. Even if KK doesn't end up in the JLA, at least it appears that he will be "present" and availlable [SIC?] for membership consideration.

Man, I so wanna see KK kick Batman's ass!

BTW, that's not a cover. It's an image Wizard commisioned for this article that speculates on Brad Meltzer's upcoming JLA series.

In other words, they could have asked for anybody to appear in it.

Posted by Mystery Lad on :

Whose hand do you think it is holding the membership notices, or whatever they are?

Nice spotting on the 'little person' perching on Elongated Man's shoulder-- I missed that completely.

Now I want to see Ralph adopt a costume with fishnets [Smile] ...

Is that Shilo in the Mr. Miracle costume, or Scott?

Hope Ollie's readoption of this uniform isn't long-lasting. If he *had* to go back to a different look, I'd rather he went all the way back to the GA look over this one. The 70's costume is the one to stick with, IMO.

Guardian, KKid and the 'little person' are the surprises to me.

The trouble with an image like this one is that whatever lineup is actually settled upon could pale in comparison.

I hope they go for a JL Unlimited-like roster. It'd be kind of interesting if *some* Titans or Outsiders or Doom Patrollers were simultaneously League members. Some openly, some in secret?

Hey! Good point. I got used to the idea of multiple Flashes when Waid wrote Flash a few years ago, it'd be pretty cool to see somebody else take that idea and work it into the JLA again.

I'd have a huge problem with any of the Legionnaires leaving the 31st Century to join the JLA!!! Karate Kid belongs with the Legion...besides, just like someone said earlier, these swaps never work out, unless it's Superboy or Supergirl going to assist the LSH!!!

It's funny they say they are not trying to be like the animated JLU with a big lineup. Yet Vixen (the one in question) looks very similiar to her JLU self here. [Wink]

Personally I think it's a good idea. I love seeing the big lineup in the cartoon. I mean watching the cowboy Vigilante fighting Thanagarians on an alien planet? Nice.

And you know there's no way the Question would've been included in that shot if it weren't for the cartoon. I wonder how much leeway the artist had in terms of who to include?

I figure its a promo piece, so it doesn't mean much.

Still, like others, I like the idea of a big JLA like this, with all the traditional big guns, and some secondary characters too that really get a chance to shine. Though perhaps a limit at some point?

I have to say that I really like the idea of the SS Guardian being in the JLA too if that were to come to pass.

And you know what? I actually kind of like KK in the JLA, but wouldn't he belong in the Titans? I certainly don't want any teenagers in the JLA. The idea of strong Legion connections to the past through Supergirl, Karate Kid, Mon-El and Superman when he was a boy is very pleasing to me--even after all the screw-ups over the years that have resulted from such things.

Posted by rtvu2 on :

Well since one's done one yet... here is the breakdown of heroes we see according to my eye.
Starting top left..

Animal Man, Fire, Arsenal?, Firehawk, Ion, Metamorpho, Mister Miracle, Adam Strange, Guy, the Mahattan Gurdian, Tempest, new Blue Beattle, Karate Kid, Dr Fate, Troia, Question, Firestorm, Dr Light II, someone with blonde hair?

Next row from the left....

Aquaman, Power Girl, Captain Marvel, Supergirl, Phantom Stranger, Huntress, Black Lighting, Captain Atom, Cyborg, Hawkman, Booster Gold-but why can't you see his face?, Vixen, Hawkgirl, Red Torando, Atom, Elgonated Man and Zantanna.

Bottom Row....

Green Lantern Hal Jordan, Green Arrow, Black Canary, Flash, Green Lantern John Stwert, Wonder Woman - but why no face again?, Batman and Superman.

Two Questions then....

So we have all everyone but one curical memeber of every JL. Where the heck is J'onn J'onzz?

Qho is the hand that is giving them the cards?

I say thee nay! That's my main problem with the teenagers thing. IMO the Legion is the JLA of the 31st century. Heck, they can be the JLA, JSA, and the Teen Titans since they are a Legion! I hate forcing them into just teenagers. My Legion was the brightest and the best of the 31st century...like the JLA. Waid thinks the teenager thing is a primary element...I don't.

Also Supergirl(Kara) was never a Teen Titan that I know of. But she was in the JLA (as well as Legion).

Posted by DrakeB3004 on :

I agree that the teen element isn't so crucial to what my notion of the Legion is. Having a wider range of ages would've been a cool way to reinvent the Legion but I do like that Waid changed things up, reimagining the Legion as a social movement and that there are thousands of Legionnaires now.

As for teens in the JLA, I'm not against the concept, as long as the JLA remains the top tier level of heroes on the planet - I've never been into the JLA lineups that were filled with unproven talent. (bwa-ha-ha JL aside cuz it was just funny, but it didn't really seem like the *JLA* until they added some power).

Its only Wizard. I usually rip them up for pictures anyway. If you look close enough you can see where I can never get the colors to match exactly when piecing two images together. For some reason one is always darker color even when I don't change the settings.

From the linework I don't think it's metallic. The computer coloring is modeled enough to be misleading (one of the things I hate about computer coloring in the wrong hands is when they make everything look shiny), but I don't see it as metallic flash - it's not as shiny as how the colorist rendered the other metallic objects. (why am I starting to feel like we're examining the Zapruder film?) If there's a version out there without the title over it, we might have an answer.

I also don't see how it could be Orion's helmet -- his helmet's silver (unless he has another one).

I wouldn't think much of that character, but if it weren't for the fact that "the Atom" (or whoever) is also draped in shadow... i duuno. There's so little to go on with that figure though, it's almost pointless (but when has that ever stopped us?)

Update from Comics Continuum on the JLU appearance by the Legion:

The Legion of Super-Heroes will be featured along with Supergirl in an upcoming episode of Cartoon Network's Justice League Unlimited.

In the episode, Supergirl is kidnapped to the 31st century for what the history books say was her last adventure. The Fatal Five appears, as do more than 20 Legionaires.

Among the Legion members in the episode are Brainiac 5 and Bouncing Boy.

The Legion's appearance has nothing to do with the Legion show in development at Warner Bros. Animation.

Not so fast! My first thought was "Well, that's where Nightwing is in this shot." It only makes sense since Tempest, Troia, Arsenal, & Cyborg are there that Dick would appear as well.

I will admit it COULD be Wildcat but my money is on Nightwing.

Clues are supposedly present throughout the first 12 issues as to some of the questions that have been raised.

With regard to Karate Kid & the JLA, I think there's a clue in #12 when Ultra Boy asks of Karate Kid if the way Jo is fighting is the way Superman would have done it.

Seems to me that the implication is that Karate Kid has first-hand knowledge of Superman.

I was afraid of that. I check CN's site over the weekend to find out what time the show started on the 8th and found it is NOT on their schedule.

I will never understand why this show does not get the love from CN. It is arguably the best animated TV show on TV right now. Watch the Booster Gold episode and you'll see what I mean.

Back on Topic, I'm sure that it is indeed Arsenal on the right of Fire. It is much clearer when you see it in Wizard.
