EDIT: Going to take Sketch Lad's advice and turn this thread into an overall "spam" thread for posting my art so I don't clutter up this end of the forum with multiple, separate posts.

(Animated LoSH) Timberwolf bugged me at 5:30am to draw him. ...so I cracked open Painter Classic, picked up my WACOM tablet and granted the request.

 -

Not the true animated style... I decided I'd rather draw the character MY way based on the animated style this time. And the lighting's not perfect...but you can't win 'em all this early in the morning. LOL.

Oooh, I love seeing interpretations of characters. (I mean, if everyone tried to copy the original style exactly, it'd all look pretty boring, wouldnit?) The muted, brown tones work really well here, and you've done a great job shading.

Whoa, and now I just noticed little details, like the metallic shine on his belt and omg white tuffs at the end of his ears. (ADORABLE!) Oh, and the wrinkles in the fabric - nice touch.

Really liked your Brainy picture too - are you going to do a portrait of everyone in the animated cast? Awesome that would be. Eagerly awaiting more!

Really cool! I hope there'll be plenty of fan art coming!!

Straya, I might recommend creating something like the "Straya Art" thread or something, and update it as you go along. People will come to look for it...

That's not a hard rule or anything, just a suggestion.

Looking forward to more, more, more!

So pretty! Though he reminds me of how, during critiquing shot assignments for school, a girl looked like she was trying who to blame for a murder...That look is generally creepy.

I faved the copy on DeviantArt.

Brin! [Big Grin]

Fantastic work, Straya. [Smile] You did that all with a tablet? And with Painter Classic? I've got it, but I haven't played with it very much.

I haven't been in this forum in ages. I just saw the thread title and couldn't resist popping in.

The way things are going, I just might. I still want to do Brainiac 5's "battle bot mode", tricked out Transformers comic style. Lightning Lad is definitely on my list to draw, as well. And I could probably do some pretty neat things with Phantom Girl in Photoshop...hn.

I think I'll go ahead and edit this post for that purpose... I guess it would be better than spamming up the forums every time the art bug bites me? LOL. That's not REAL often, anymore, but it happens... Ah, to be a teenager again and churning out ten sketches a day (even if they weren't very good ones). x_x

Yeah, it's a 4x6 WACOM Graphire, pressure sensitive. I've had it for years and it still works pretty well. *knock on wood* Painter Classic doesn't have as much to it as the full version and like the older versions of Painter, there's no layers option. But it's a lot of fun to play with. I did TW as a sketch in light gray, then went over him again with dark grey to harden and darken the line work. Then I used a lightnng effect to throw the gradient over top and most of the rendering was using the dodge and burn tools on that gradiant. There's some watercolor in there as well because the burn wasn't good enough on its own, but that method lets me turn out stuff with some decent amount of speed.

Well done Straya
I REALLY like this. Like others have pointed out The little detail work is really eyecathing.
Where did you post the pic of Brainy that you mentioned, I'd like to see that.

The topic's a short ways down the list in this forum, but I'll go ahead and repost the image to this thread so everything will stay collected and in the same spot from now on.

Drawn in non-photo blue at an ungodly hour of the morning, then inked at work with a rollerball pen.

And Lightning Lad is indeed next up... I just finished sketching him out in Painter. Just need to darken up the linework. Not sure if I'll give him the gradiant/dodge/burn treatment, but using his "fists o' lightning" to set off the light source might be too much to resist. Also saving this one in steps because...I don't know why. But it kinda shows some sort of process.

VERY nice. I love the chromatic {mono-chromatic?} style you have. It gives the image a subtle pop that a larger color pallet would hide.

Keep them coming.

Sketch process on Lightning Lad for the heck of it.

 -

Between the first two, I decided the further leg didn't look right and that the torso was too long. Used copy/paste to edit the torso length (actually removed the lower half from below the belt down and reattached it slightly higher up) and redrew the leg.

Going to work up my own version of Brainiac 5, next, and not follow the 'toon so heavily, I think.

Also, I've had too much candy and soda. Erm...gonna be one of those nights.

*laughs* you're like Issac from Heros. (awsome show) draw the most awsome stuff only while you're high...suger high that is. unfortunately, I went swimming just a few hours ago and it's 40 degrees outside, I'm sitting in a 50 degree room with thin pajamas and still wet hair, so I think I better curl up in my nice warm bed before I catch a cold. but I will be WAY looking forward to some new artwork in the morning. don't let me down.

LIGHTNING LAD

Solid work on the shading there. Any chance of you showing the process you did? (You mentioned that you saved the steps, yeah?)
EDIT: Okay, I'm a dumbtard and didn't notice the second page. Yaaarr!

Small nitpick: His head seems joined to the neck oddly from the angle the collar of the tights is drawn (I hate drawing heads from worm's eye view), and the feet look rather stiff. Other than that, I love it! Especially the way the muscles are implied, and his adorable, adorable face.

Oh, and I didn't comment so on your other thread, but that Brainy picture is total rawk.

I'm still trying to get the hang of the worm's eye view thing, so yeah... I see what you mean. I played with it a little while working on it, but couldn't seem to get it to look just right at the time and ended up leaving it. Kinda lazy of me, but...eh. x_x Nothing for it but more practice, right? I'll keep at it. [Smile] And thanks for the concrit!

Busted out a lot of Rockman and Rockman X music for the next one...

 -

...knew I was going to drag in some Mega Man X and Transformers influence without hesitation. (And, in a way, his face kind of reminds me of Red Alert's from Mega Man X7.) Decided not to do the gradiant render thing on this one, though. If I do color it, I think I'd rather go the whole way, since his costume has a lot more color contrast to it against his green skin as opposed to the color shift variations in someone like Timberwolf.

I like it, a more classic look for Brainy. Looks like he's ready for a long day of work in the lab and the mechanical shop.

Of course, this may not be a positive thing considering he spent his first 30+ years in very fashion-challenged purple mechanic's coveralls.

I think the problem is that I've loved Transformers since age eight, and in recent years, have come to think of many of their faces as being extremely attractive with the facial lines, chin guards, simplified noses, battle masks, visors, etc. And since I started taking mecha art seriously in early 2004, I've been trying to ramp things up a bit whenever I draw anything robotic. More details, more mechanical kibble, etc. (I actually tried to take Mega Man X himself to another level by drawing him as a Transformer.)

I may try some variations, though. I mentally played with the idea of a visor, but didn't actually try it. (And, if anything, it's probably the added lines and nose that are turning you off a bit because they make him not only more robotic, but older. The funny thing is, though, is that the spots were I placed the added lines are actually where his face divides and resets for battlebot mode; they're just more like invisible seams in the cartoon.)

LOL, sometimes the fashionable challenged ones are the most fun... Because then it's an excuse to draw them in clothing variations. XD Plus I'm very much a fan of WB!Brainy's snarky side. Tried to put that through on this one. "Don't bother me, I'm busy!"

RAWKMAN X! [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Big Grin]

I love the more robotic look that you've given Brainy, actually XD Makes it less anime-ish, more... okay, gundams are still Japanese, but you know what I mean. Hee hee, HUGE feet. (There's a joke here, but I'm going to let it pass.)

Interesting combination of fabric and machine - although, since the 'clothes' part of him transform too, I would've thought his outfit was just emulated tech. But of course, this is the future. In space. Anything can happen.

And for some reason, I have fallen in love with your ear interpretation. And his clunky little fingers. Brainy looks a bit older, here!

...Hawt.

I'm still trying to figure out whether it is fabric in the series, or something else. Drax actually grabs Brainy by "the shirt" in "Phantoms", making it look like it is a shirt and it is cloth. At the same time, everything folds out and transforms when he goes battle bot mode. ...some kind of nanite tech? Dunno.

...Hawt.

I blame the fingers completely on the recent slew of Transformers comic artists (like Don Figueroa, Mark Brooks, Makoto Ono, etc.) who have upped the anty on drawing TFs with heavier amounts of detail. (Makotron's Rodimus Convoy art is a good example of it.)

The ears... I think I almost wanted them to look like they could expand and contracts like mini-satellite dishes or something, LOL. I think I picked that up from how Mega Man's robocat Tango looked years and years ago.

Well, I will continue to play with the design...as well as designs with the other Legionnaires, more than likely. The thing is that while I CAN emulate the cartoon style decently, it's not MY style. Even if I drew him younger looking and forced it, he probably would still look a bit different than what's in the show. And truth be told, playing around like this is a lot more fun than drawing the same designs over and over again, especially when I haven't hit up on any real ideas for full on illustrated scenes or anything. ^_^;;

I already broke a plate and blamed the microwave, I wanna see what else I can get away with, lol. It was one of my mom's expensive Longaberger plates...like Longaberger baskets...If they're known for making baskets why should they make/sell pottery? ANYWAY, I know some other things you could put in a microwave that you shouldn't...^_^

Pleasepleasepleeeease continue playing with the style. I love seeing your interpretations of the design - they're so fun. And really, if all fanart tried to copy the original style exactly, then it'd get... kinda boring after a while.

(Besides, I like my Brains a little meatier. No, not as meaty as that. Or as that. Uh..)

Brainiac 5! What are you doing with a primitive hunk of trash like a microwave? Those belong in the dump. Either Legion HQ isn't as well funded as we think (R. J. a pinch-penny?!), or someone's antique collection just got knocked down a piece.

I probably should have used "microwave emitter", but for one...I was too brainfried. And two...the joke actually came to me out of a short Transfic I read a while back. I wish I could remember who wrote it, but if I find out, I'll post credit. Anyway... Decent sized explosion inside Autobot HQ and Wheeljack, mad scientist inventor and engineer, reports to Ratchet, Chief Autobot Medic. Ratchet, irritated to see his friend in shambles and suspecting some experimentation with explosives yet AGAIN, demands to know what happened. Wheeljack responds that, "Some fool put a fork in the microwave." ...of course, what use does a twenty foot tall alien robot have for a kitchen appliance like a microwave? XD

Okay, NON-LEGION art incoming...

I figured I would go ahead and post this here, however, because it's an image of my lycanthrope avatar, Aestraya. She usually wears almost full, high-tech body armor, but I worked this version out to have her sporting Wastelander style gear from Jak 3.

 -

Her ears are supposed to be more tiger-like, but I went ahead and extended them to look like Jak's people's ears.

I'm sort of hoping I can turn this into a series-kinda thing on the side, as I'd like to do a Legion version of my online persona as well.

No one's commented yet? Odd - though maybe just for the fact it isn't Legion? Either way, despite not being the biggest fan of most anthro art, I like your drawing style and I love the outfit. That, and a decent handle on anatomy! It's so little to ask for, and yet so very important.

That expression is the same one my cats give, every day of their lives.

Yeah, wasn't sure how it would be taken since it's not Legion, but it is my avatar, so I figured I'd post it. I've been working on a Legion version of her, as well as finishing the Brainy Battlebot I began a little while ago, but it's been a really rough week. It might be a bit longer before I post anything of real interest, again. =/ Thanks for taking the time to comment, though!

Again, thanks for the commentary, everyone. I haven't been around much lately because the last month was kind of crazy-go-nuts for me, to quote Strong Bad. Aside from the usual holiday complications of Christmas shopping, bits of family drama and all that, I got the bug that's been going around and one of my pets fell ill and died. That was $170 in vet bills down the tubes, but if I thought it would have saved his life, I'd do it again in a heartbeat. My fiancé and I are also trying to plan a move to an apartment over the next month, month and a half or so, so my presence here might be sporadic from time to time. (And hopefully the incoming ice storm this weekend won't cause us a major power outage, either.)

Anyway, more personal avatar art...this time OF a LoSH nature.

 -

I wanted to keep it simple, more cartoon-styled, though I didn't have any references at the time to really push it over the edge. Aestraya would be a lot like Timberwolf, with abilities such as heightened senses, claws/fangs, great strength and speed, etc. I also gave her a pair of beam sabre like swords that attach to her forearms when not in use. We'll attribute the design and creation of those to Brainiac 5, but the character has always been a melee fighter, choosing close range weapon combat over firearms.

I'll likely never write LoSH fan fic with her in it, though.

Ho boy. It's been a little bit of a while, hasn't it? *digs up thread and throws forum dust up all over the place* I figured since we'll be getting to see "Brain Drain" later today, I should get back on that sketch of Brainiac 5 in Battlebot mode that I kept mentioning/promising. It's still not done, but it looks better than it did and I'm seriously considering a run through with Illustrator to ink it digitally. (And I have been making art, lately, just not Legion-related art, specifically. Lots of Transformers stuff. And some art based on the Jak & Daxter games. Hee.)

 -

Right off, it's not canon battlebot mode. I really, really wanted to put some Transformers influence in there, so I started working in joints, hip sockets, etc. that would add a more "giant freaking robot" feel. I also let a more Mega Man X feel influence his head by adding the antennae with side bolts on the helm. I also tricked the hell out of his left arm as an extendable projectile weapon (even though it's so messy looking right now it's kind of hard to tell what the frag I'm doing with it, but I'll continue to clean up further).

And really...because it's just not good enough for this Brainy fangirl that the guy is the smartest one of the bunch... I had to go and make his "alt mode" (or true form if you want to call it that) as bad aft looking as possible. If the 12th level intelligence doesn't get you, the bottom of one of those big feet just might. *grins*

On another note, I'll have to go back through and change all the image URLs on my previous posts. I recently lost my domain name (sylversword.com) and all attempts to get it back have resulted in failure, so I've been forced to use my host's direct URL for linking and images. I really need to think up a new domain name and once I have one, I'll be getting it for free through my current host. The problem is thinking of something artsy, snazzy and hip sounding that would make a good base URL. Uh...suggestions welcome if anyone has them? LOL.

It is the 31st Century. The battlefield is Earth's New Metropolis. Not long after Brainiac 5's forced contact with the "hive mind" of his race, the super logical Coluans learn of their wayward unit's location and find that not only has his contact with humanity tainted his mind, but also the hive mind on the whole. The result is chaos on Colu, and unable to properly cope with what they consider an invasion of their way of life and minds, the Coluans make plans to invade Earth and destroy the source of their aggravation, taking Brainiac 5 back in the process.

Knowing, however, that Brainiac 5 has made powerful allies during his time away, including the legendary hero of the past Superman, the Coluans build their own time travel unit and seek forced assistance from a past and alternate universe. In their search for power, they locate and "borrow" several larger mechanoid beings with incredible strength and capabilities, forcing a connection upon them with the hive mind to better control them.

And thus the Coluan-Decepticon invasion of Earth begins.

Overrun and outgunned by the massive Decepticon forces, the Legion of Superheroes, the 31st century guardians of the United Planets, is forced to take drastic measures. After learning where the Coluans found their new slaves for destruction, Brainiac 5 modifies and reactivates his time travel device to reach the home time and plane of the Decepticons in order to find a way to stop them and send them back.

Can Lightning Lad, Superman and the other Legionnaires hold the Coluans and their Decepticon "allies" at bay long enough for Brianiac 5, Saturn Girl and Phantom Girl to make contact with the Autobots, the enemies of the Decepticon forces? Will the Autobots consent to a leap forward across time and space to battle the Decepticons and Coluans in New Metropolis? And what will Megatron do when he discovers the identity of those alien beings who stole half his troops...?

Thirded! [Big Grin] I really dig your style. And the notes are really interesting (for the art-impaired, anyway). Can't wait to see what you cook up next. [Smile]

Wow these are good! The Aestraya in Wastelander style gear and Shrapnel versus Lightning Lad are my favorites. If I saw the first at a gallery I'd more than likely buy it.
