Start thinking about it!

It's the Return of the Legionverse's Search for the Next Top Pinup Model...of Space! Return of the Pinup Model(RPM)!

As always, the contest will be driven by viewer votes, but this time, it's a little different. There's only one spot available. It could be filled by a male OR a female, or, in the Legionverse, a non sentient or non gendered being.

This is the plan... it's going to come together American Idol style.

AUDITIONS. First, there's an open call. ANY character in Legion comics is eligible for nomination. We are looking for something new, something different. We will accept Legionnaires, villains, supporting cast, obscure players of all ranges.

No pinups will be rendered at this point. They will stand on their name and potential alone.

The nominees will either be REJECTED! or told "You're going to METROPOLIS!"

THE METROPOLIS ROUND.
The characters that make it to Metropolis will have black and white pencil sketches posted. Voting will determine which characters move on and which are rejected.

THE FINALISTS.
The top 10 characters will begin typical Pinup Model challenges. They will be given themes, settings, props, etc, with which they will star in fully colored pinups. Voting will decide which characters get rejected.

THE HOST AND JUDGES.
We will not hear from the judges until we get to the top 4! Our host will be Dream Girl and our judges will be Emerald Empress, Marte Allon and Saturn Girl.

THE WINNER.
The winner will join such esteemed pinup supermodels as:
LIGHTNING LAD
LEUNG
INFECTIOUS LASS
IRESA
MEKT RANZZ
CHLOROPHYLL KID
THEENA
ROND VIDAR
LUORNU DURGO
BEAUTY BLAZE

Looking forward to it!

Hooray! The nominees begin to roll in...

Lots of excellent opportunities.

I wish to formally pull my nomination for Nemesis Kid and, instead, second Set's nomination for Lazon. There are some very early front runners for METROPOLIS; Laurel Kent, Dawnstar, Blok, Colossal Boy and now, Lazon.

Still, it is early. No one has been rejected yet, and no one is a sure-thing yet. I like how some characters from previous challenges are being requested to get another shot!

So fun! I'd almost forgotten!

Can't wait! Will there be surprises!?! A corporate sponsor perhaps (mmm Coca Cola and Covergirl)?

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

So, the audition round is over! But what about those surprises?

Well, here they are....

Surprise #1
Blockade Boy totally intrigued me with his campaign to get the Eye Thingy into this competition, so he/she/it is in. Now, I *think* I have that issue in my collection, but I gotta dig... I might be calling out for a reference shot.

Surprise #2
PAGING QUISLET, ESQ!! You have been selected by the Pinup Models, Inc. crew to choose a contestant to go to Metropolis. Any Legionverse character you want, baby!

Surprise #3
PAGING THRIFTSHOP DEBUTANTE!! For your constant dedication to this series, you may choose any Legionverse character to go to Metropolis.

Surprise #4
Whichever Legion World member makes the very next post on this thread... may choose a Legionverse character to go to Metropolis.

Okay, I'll be checking back in Monday morning....

Hooray! Teeds! Yes, I have Who's Who. Can't live withou it. I *thought* that was who Blockade Boy meant, but I wasn't 100% sure. I'm glad we have a name instead of "Eye Thingy."

I somehow knew you'd be choosing Warden Tsaquin! Uh, which issue did he(?) appear in?

Per Warden Tsaquin's WWLSH (#7, p.26) profile, his first appearance was Baxter 22. He also appeared in Baxter 45 and TMK 11. Possibly more.)

I believe Gruertis Nyefib, Governor of Ventura, is an eye guy. The dude from DCCP seemed to be an average, everyday space-schlub who preferred the superior mass transit from back home on Drak Some-number.

The groupings were completely random except for the "wild card" additions. They were each intentionally put in different groups.

I realize that groupings make for an uneven playing field, but there's a certain amount of *chance* that I like in doing it that way.

There will be more groupings to come, but they'll be different.

Shadow Lass - I think this one goes to the guys, Tasmis has got too tough of a competition
Lazon - It was a litle pitchy, I'm sorry.

Okay, the top 12 have put on a fashion show for us to judge. Please list the three models you wish to REJECT!

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Reject:

ANDROMEDA: I have to say, I really don't like that outfit at all.

GIM: Not bad, but just not that exciting. I loved all of his audition round appearances, however.

PULSAR STARGRAVE: Yeah, he's pulling off the villainous look, but I'm not really digging the "less is more" idea.

COMMENTS ON OTHERS:

--I'm actually not a huge fan of the nothing but a bit of gas or feathers motif, but I decided to pass these girls anyway.

--Lazon still isn't smiling.

--Cal took me awhile to decide about, but in the end I think I kind of like the look. Love the "Queen" written on her leg in particular.

--I'm generally not a fan of the punk-look, but it kind of works for Pete.

--Lydda is absolutely stunning. My favorite pic by far.

--GiGi goes for something a bit unexpected. And it works.

--Jacques also rocks. Totally has an A&F thing going on. Keeping him in was worth it for this pic.

--Shady is a very natural model. She's got a lot of potential, although I think this pic only hints at it.

Andromeda really hasn't been blowing me away in any of her pictures. She gets my vote this round.

The "less is more" for Porcupine Pete really isn't. Some people shouldn't wear speedos...

Pink is definitely not Tasmia's color. She's too dark for something so... girly. Not sexy at all.

Random note: I think I love Gim Allon. Seriously, the boy looks yummy. [Big Grin] I heartily approve!

Great start to what looks to be a great Pinup Model game!! [Big Grin] Can't wait for more, Dean.

Calorie Queen: This outfit doesn't do it for me.

Tasmia: I agree with Cali. Pink is not for her.

Comment: I also agree with Cali on Gim. That's one tasty piece of man! [Drool]

So far the bottom three are:
Andromeda, Pulsar Stargrave and Shadow Lass

Reject:
-Pulsar Stargrave
-Gigi
-Calorie Queen

Andromeda: I would have voted for her instead of Cal, but I'd like to see whether she gets better later on. She didn't do it for me at all this time around, though.

Lazon: Meh. He should have glown more (literally) in this challenge. And enough with the frown already!

Gas Girl: Yeah! The picture works really well. The only thing I didn't like are the 'invisible' (?) boots. I think she should have gone with bare feet.

Porcupine Pete: Er, I don't know how to say this, but he looks like a dog on a leash. And he owns that.

Night Girl: It took me a minute to 'get' the design on the gown, but yes, it's quite original.

Colossal Boy: Good picture of him. You know, Gim should take off his hood more often, he really looks better without it.

IK2: An interesting outfit. The white line leads one's attention to his crotch, I don't know if that's what was intended (who am I kidding, of course it was!)

Shady: No... Something is not working here. The two shades of blue? The face, maybe? That floating pink thing? Close call for the last spot on the reject list between Cal, Shady and Andy. I chose Cal because I'd really like to see what Shady and Andy do later on in the competition.

Dawnstar: You know what, this picture really works. Dawny is just a very beautiful woman.

Winner of the round: Colossal Boy

I vote to reject

Lazon (If I pick a hunk, it's gonna be Gim)
GiGi (I just have it in for the little...I don't know why)
Shadow Lass (I love her, but she's working that blue thing a little to hard)

And might I add, I never would have thought a porcupine guy could be so hot.

"I'd like to have a Super-Walkoff...of Space!"

I will attempt to separate on the modeling (the work of each contestant) from the clothing or lack thereof (Mr. Glissand's handiwork). We'll see how far I get with that.

Andromeda. A fine start. Nice framing collar on a good-looking outfit. (And wouldn't you know that even in a holo of her front there'd be attention paid to Laurel's As.) Downside: if I didn't know better I might think this was Dreamy. Gold, not platinum!

Lazon. OK. Outfit's kinda eh. Hey, be more exciting & I'll write more stuff.

Gas Girl. Like Ester, I prefer clothes that are clothes. GG could have done some nifty effects to enhance actual clothing. I think she has potential though.

Pulsar Stargrave. Yeah, givin' us a li'l something different. PS: just remember to keep mixing it up.

Calorie Queen. I don't care for the outfit -- although I like the "Queen" writing. But I love Cal, what can I say?

P-Pete. Look at that expression! V. good.

Night Girl. Now, see, here's an example of giving a model something to work with.

Colossal Boy. He looks like he's enjoying himself.

GiGi. Goodness gracious, GiGi!

IKII. Clever, Glissand. (And a tad raunchy.) I like Jacques.

Shadow Lass. I like Tasmia but I am not feeling this picture.

Dawnstar. Not for me.

More commentary from the other side of the aisle

Andromeda: Nice use of hair to keep the center of gravity over the pumps.

Lazon: Not comfortable with his color choice but like the retro look.

Gas Girl: Word is Gas Girl may be disqualified. Apparently some scandalous photos have been making the rounds on the holonet showing Gas Girl fully clothed. Backstage a large floating hairpiece is creating quite a ruckus over this.

Pulsar: Phantom Girl wants her pants back. Still, a good look for taking over all reality.

Calorie Queen: I’ve voted her off three times. Three times I’ve been wrong. I’ll take the blue flame for 500 Alex.

Pete is proud. Needles haven’t looked this good since Dreamy gave up knitting (yeah, I don’t know what that’s supposed to mean either).

Night Girl: Wearing the perfect gift for the buxom playmate who insists you look her in the eyes.

Colossal Boy: Reminds me of my days as a crossing guard.

Gi Gi: What goggles?

Inv Kid II: Like this diatribe of mine. Trying just a bit to hard here.

Shady: Nice color choice but the Flying Nun hair ware is so last millennia.

Dawny: Wildfire needs to keep his energies to himself. He’s set her on-fire.

Off:

So, Dean, I'm curious, what would Anton have done if Blok had still been in the competition? I'm trying to think about a sexy outfit for Blok, and I'm coming up with a blank. And a giggle.

Maybe you should take this up as a challenge?...

Posted by Set on :

Andromeda: I don't even like her, but she's seriously working.

Lazon: I *do* like Lazon, and even would go for a surfer-schtick, but he's just missing it. Maybe some zinc-oxide on the nose, a surfboard, a chinsy necklace and, what am I missing here? Oh yes, *feet!* Whatever the hell that is on your legs, you can't surf in it! Dood!

Gas Girl: Meh.

Pulsar Stargrave: Less is indeed more, but it's too early in the contest. I need to see 'it' before you start playing coy with 'it,' Stargy.

Calorie Queen: [flails around blindly]

Porcupine Pete: Looks like a prick to me.

Night Girl: Stop the competition! I call fraud! There's just no way she can be so hot, and so cool, and so room-temperature, all at the same time! She wins. Game over. Everyone else take your crap and go.

Colossal Boy: Nice hint of rough play for those who like them big *and* mean.

Gigi Cusimano: Back girl! Lydda's already got this in the bag, don't be coming on so scorching hot, like you've got a chance!

Invisible Kid: Hm. One would expect a man whose power is to skip by unnoticed and steal the show to have more subtlety than that.

Shadow Lass: Oh sprock no! Beautiful Shady, eclipsed by headgear. This is a woman who *is* shadow, she shouldn't be overshadowed in her own entry! I like the boots, 'though. They look dangerous.

Dawnstar: A feather boa and the theme to A Summer Place come to mind. Well, mine anyway. Not hers, apparently. Perhaps she would look suitably mysterious crouched, wings spread, wearing nothing, but holding a dove just in front of the 'good bits?' Nothing says 'E! Entertainment special in the making' like humorous anecdotes about on-set disasters involving live animals.

Hey, you, get offa my tree!

Reject Porcupine Pete and (unfortunately) Andromeda. I agree with Teed's comment from above: Andy is gold-blonde, not platinum! I think that's what irked me the most about her picture.

On notice: Dawny. She looks as if she just came out of the shower. And IK2, what a bland picture!

Lazon, Night Girl and Colossal Boy are great (this challenge really goes well with Lazon's and Night Girl's powers...) Pulsar and Gas Girl are OK.

Sometimes Zaton goes by Aton because when you translate names on his homeworld, the first and last character of their alphabet can be exchanged, left off or otherwise altered.

(Did I explain that with enough authority? Or does it seem like I'm just trying to back peddle my way out of an error?)

I'm rejecting Invisible Kid II & Colossal Boy

I think Gim was trying to be someone else with that hair style and Jacques just didn't pull it off with his lighting/color effect.

Dawnstar looked very high humidity sultry. Night Girl played it safe with the dark color, but safe doesn't mean bad. I liked Pete. He looked quite fierce. If he looked that good at his Legion Try-out, he might have made the team. Lazon made good use of lighting as he should. Pulsar & Andromeda looked good, but not outstanding.

Gas Girl is the real stand out in this challenge. Followed by Pete.

Posted by Caliente on :

This time I've really got to go with Pulsar Stargrave and Porcupine Pete. Those boys really let me down. On notice: Gas Girl, Invisible Kid II and Night Girl. All had aspects I liked but none WOWed me.

The big winners for me this time were Gim (once again) and Dawny. She eyes just looked so... exposed. Lazon was absolutely fabulous, too. Really liked the color you chose for him and the way you used it on him. Great work, Dean!

Posted by Ram Boy on :

I vote to kick out Pulsar Stargrave. Sorry to say, I really wasn't groovin on Porcupine Pete this round (kind of grinchy lookin), but I'm stickin by him and tossing Lazon to the wolves instead .

I love what your doing with Gim. Night Girl looked very exotic. But it was Dawnstar that amazed me this time around. But then again your work is usually amazing.

Posted by Thriftshop Debutante on :

Forget a title, I'm declaring my luv for P-Pete here & now.

Favorite colors: Dawny's purple/pink palette, Jacques' serene aquamarine, and (though on the pic I'm not so keen) Pulsar's glowing green.

Although I usually don't pay much attention to Dawnstar, this holo is compelling.

Space-kudos to Gas Girl and Porcupine Pete. GG looks like a Vogue fashion illustration circa '67. Now, for PP, the colors aren't as lush or pretty as others'. They're actually kind of off-putting if you don't take into consideration that this is a replication of an OLD COMIC BOOK enlarged and reprinted on good paper in a coffee table retrospective. He's giving you what you like, sentients, how could you vote him out?

OUT:

Pulsar Stargrave

Andromeda

Totally on notice: LAZON. Dude. Be interesting or go home. (I totally mean to be mean.)

I vote against Porcupine Pete (who looks like he escaped from a Dr. Seuss book in the Library of Unwritten Books in the Dreaming...) and Pulsar Stargrave, AKA descendant of Marvel's The Leader. How *that* could happen boggles the imagination.

I liked Gim the best this round.

Y'know, Dean- Gas Girl doesn't *have* to have the gas-effect hair in every pic. She can have normal looking hair and have gas appear somewhere else on her body. I mean, it's a signifier of her power, not a permanent condition. An effect like in the animated opening of "I Dream of Jeannie" could work for her...

It's gonna take some work for anybody to beat Lydda's opening round pic. That dress was amazing...

What do you guys think of this idea... the top seven are the tour guides for the Seven Wonders of the 30th Century. They will appear in an omnicom designed especially for the tour.

The thing is, the models only appear in a very small portion of the screen. I suppose the test for them is to really stand out, to POP in the midst of all the other stuff going on.

OR...

Should I come up with something else for them?

Please let me know what you think.

Posted by Doctor One on :

You should do whatever you like, Dean, you've shown again and again that you have a great artistic vision. Just draw whatever you're thinking of, we'll sure tell you whether we liked it or not...

Regarding the Night Girl picture, maybe we can have the guides be more active, more involved in what they are showing. Otherwise they just look like TV anchormen (anchorpersons?). Or is that what you're going for?

Posted by Set on :

It might be more fun to have them as part of the action. Night Girl *in* the trans-earth tunnel, for instance.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Yeah, I agree. I'd love to see the Seven Wonders as backdrops, but the models need to be in the picture itself.

And, if you really want to give Night Girl a challenge, put her in Sun City.

Posted by Quislet, Esq. on :

I agree with Doctor One about just having a head shot in the corner. We need more interaction.

Perhaps a future challenge would incorporate them using their powers.

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

I'm glad I posted that example, because even though I like the idea of using "footage" from the comics, I agree with what most of you have said about having the models be more interactive with the exhibits. I'll be taking a bit of time to get these sketches right.

Just some insider info,
You all know that the next challenge has to do with the seven wonders. There will be 2 more rejections made, bringing us to the top 5. From then on, we will have judges' commentary and only one at a time will be rejected. Get your box of tissues ready...

Jillikers, late for the partyagain and all the good booze is gone!

Still, that won't stop me from drinking the cheap booze and getting in some comments, even though they won't affect anything!

THE FASHION SHOW:

Well, *I* certainly never would have voted Gigi out.

I must admit Taryn's outfit was... well, I wasn't surprised she goot booted.

LOVED Lydda's Hooters-gown! Nice job of implementing her longtime owl-logo design.

Gim Allon: Sexy? S'true. I've always liked him but never thought of him as sexy until now.

And Pete looked GREAT! Wow, that was a real surprise.

Lazon looked hot here too.

EXTREME FACIAL SHOTS:

It's **ALL** about Dawnstar here. A magnificent potrait.

Gas Girl was another standout.

Pete may have got the boot too soon, as Stargrave hasn't done too much for me in either round.

Posted by MLLASH on :

Heh... thinking about that Giffen "noseless horrified Stargrave" page got me thinking how much I'd like to see Dean's version of same.

Maybe Dean-recreated "famous poses and panels"?

Anyhoo, how long will it be before Pulsie attacks our handsome host Tenzil? And will Nura wake up before the competition ends? Stay tuned!

Wow, I think Night Girl is the only remaining model that I haven't rejected somewhere along the way.

How did Marte Allon get to be a judge? I just know there's a conspiracy going on somewhere. Did I see a "twinkle" in Allon's eye? We all know what that means! Hey? Has anyone seen Rond?

Marte, Imra and Sarya have been longtime MODELS judges. Something crazy generally happens between them.

BB, your comment about Lydda's gown ("perfect for women who want men to look them in the eyes") may be the funniest thing I've ever read!

Hi.
Sketch Lad's art is fantastic. I've been looking at all the previous RPMs for 3 days(nights actually) now, and I can't describe how much I've enjoyed them! Some of them made the Legion even more "real" for me (if that's possible) and it was like having a magazine about what goes in "behind the scenes" in the 31st Century.
I wish Sketch Lad were the artist of the Legion comic.

Umm, is it ok if I vote too in the next challenge? I mean it's more or less the middle of this contest, and I'm not sure if that's permitted.

Okay, so after trying several different ways of presenting the models at the Seven Wonders of the 30th Century, I finally came up with an idea I liked!

Please list the two who should be REJECTED!

Posted by Quislet, Esq. on :

Reject:

Pulsar Stargrave - too haughty looking and trying to be bigger than the Giant Hall of Fame.

Lazon - Maybe if he had shown his bathing suit of light...

Other:

Gas Girl is great again. I love her wind-swept hair.

Invisible Kid II looks like he is enjoying himself here and that exuberance carries over.

Gim looked good. Although he would have looked better standing next to the Stratosphere Laboratory.

Dawnstar looked a little (ok a lot) haughty. But I Like the view point (AKA her point of view) of Sun City.

Lyddia, you look a little bored. Don't let your early lead go to your head.

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

I've given myself the giggles over my own dang work. Gas Girl at the Great Wind Control Center!
snicker^^^giggle **hyuck **hyuck!

Actually, your comment about Stargrave was exactly what I was going for with him, so I wanted him at the HoF.

I had considered making Gim as tall as the Strat Lab, but I don't think he could actually grow THAT big.

I would have considered it artistic licence. As it is now, it kind of looks like he's doing one of those Leaning Tower of Pisa poses.

Can I just say that I love these?

Reject Stargrave and Lazon, though it's more for their past performances than this one. At least Lazon finally smiled!

Credit where credit's due....

When I was thinking about what to do with seven models, I went to the SLSH board and did a search for "seven" and I got a couple of hits. One was a thread about the seven deadly sins and another one was EDE's thread about the Seven Wonders of the 30th Century.

So, thank you EDE for the idea!

Hmm, I'm off with the group again. This is the best Pulsar yet TO ME and the first I've chosen near the top. Well proportioned. That bit of smugness I'd expect. IK II wins this round on my card.

Rejected!
Colossal Boy - Looks more like Steroid Boy. Some things large beyond proportion and some thing eh,... not so much.

Reject Pulsar Stargrave and....either Night Girl or Colossal Boy...Night Girl or Colossal Boy....Colossal Boy!

So, Pulsar and Colossal Boy.

And I can't believe that people are voting against Lazon this time around, he looks awesome with those piercing yellow eyes and that mischivious smile. I think he rocked this challenge.

Winner of the challenge: Lazon. Dawny and Gas Girl also look great, love Dawny's expression and Gas Girl's hair. IK2 is OK, if not too exciting (but I do love the concept of upside-down waterfalls). Night Girl is just not doing it for me, her expression looks.. well, fake, maybe she should have gone INTO the tunnel. I agree with Blockade Boy regarding Colossal Boy: he looks as if on steroids, and his proportions are not quite right. Pulsar... there's something wrong with his neck. I do like the red glow in his eyes, though.

Posted by Fat Cramer on :

Reject Invisible Kid II and Colossal Boy, although I commend Colossal Boy for resembling the Laboratory.

Lydda is also commended for appearing in bright sunlight. Her eyes match the sky perfectly.

Lazon, Dawny and Gas Girl blend very well with their chosen wonders and of course Pulsar and his ego have to dwarf the giants.

Lucky Sevens

Dawnstar: No sense in hiding your light under a space-bushel, right? Right. Not even at Sun City.

Night Girl: "Okay, what's going to get me through to the next round...highlighting a tunnel or highlighting my space-bikini?"

Pulsar Stargrave: this suits him very well. Good show.

IKII: Hee hee! This one looks like he jumped into the frame. "C'est moi, Jacques!" A bit doofus-y in a charming way, lively and kinda funny. More interesting/memorable than some of the others.

Lazon: Hey, Lazy, finally you take some time to shine. Good ta know you have some personality.

OUT:

Colossal Boy.
I think I get what you were going for, but it didn't quite work for me.

Gas Girl. It's the facial expression.

Gim, Gim, Gim... [No] You disappoint me this round! He was the top of my list and an early front runner but, alas, this round I must vote him out. He was just too... too... I don't know what but I didn't like it.

I was torn between Night Girl and Dawny for the other vote because, unfortunately, these ladies let me down, as well. I'm going to have to go with Lydda, though. Something in her whole image didn't work for me.

I really loved Jaques and Lazon this round. Those boys blew me away. Gas Girl was by far my favorite of the fem. At first I didn't like Pulsar Stargrave but, upon second viewing, I realized how much it suited him.

Great show, Dean. [Big Grin]

Thought this would be a good time for some notes from the Artistic Director at Pinup Models, Inc.

The Zaton Glissand fashion show...
Zaton and the models collaborated on what to wear. None of the models had any conflicts with the designer and vice versa. It was a very calm and pleasant event. I was a bit surprised Calorie Queen was eliminated. I thought Tasmia looked great in pink, though I do admit that Zaton's headpiece for her was rather odd. I thought Gigi was hot! Evidently too much.

Extreme Close Up Colors...
I'm in love with that picture of Dawnstar! If I do say so myself! I was very happy with all of these except for Andromeda and Pulsar. That drawing of Andy would look great in regular color. I may do that someday. I did a drawing of Cal for this contest, which I still may scan and post sometime.

Seven Wonders.... This contest result is still pending, so I'll talk about the ideas that were rejected. I posted the Omnicom idea. I was going to use "footage" from the comics plus a new little headshot of each model, but I agreed that it should have been more about the model than all the other stuff. I found it very difficult to place the models near their exhibits, because they are all pretty large. So, the Wonders needed to be in the background. Another idea was to have them in old fashioned, kitchy tour guide uniforms, and work for Oli-3 Queen Enterprises. Cute, but kinda dull. Then, I was going to have them selling holo-maps to the 7 Wonders. They were going to be nude, but covered up by a sandwich board showing each person's individual Wonder. Gim would have been giant, so his board would have been right in front of the private bit. Dawny's wings would have been fully extended, to draw attention to her sign. (.... see, that's where the idea lost its charm... what would the others do?) So, to hell with it! Put 'em in bikinis and stick 'em in front of the wonders!

I like the wind blowing Dawnstar's hair back. Neat. Plus the whole native american / sun city thing made me laugh, in a politically incorrect sort of way.

Colossal Boy, eh, but I like him, so he gets a pass. Had he been standing behind the strat-lab, hands over it like some movie monster, it might have been more dramatic. Little people running and screaming in sub-titles...

Night Girl is awesome, as always, although her 'cups' are differently shaped. Lop-sided boobies! I'm gonna fall out of my chair!

I like Pulsar's stance. I guess I won't vote him out.

Oh Jacques. You're not Lyle. Go away and take the skunk-lock with you, 'cause you're not Rogue either.

Gas Girl's been hitting the botox. Check out those lips! Such big eyes you have grandma! Sort of a mix of 'ooh' surprise-and-alarm and 'quiche me baby.' I'm not feeling it. The whole expression says to me, 'Wedgie!'

Nice placement on Lazon. The lopsided smile suggests mischief. Or possibly a killing spree. So hard to tell with that boy...

Ditch Gas Girl and IK2.

This was hard, but...

Pulsar looked a tad... inappropriate in tightie wighties in front of presidents. Not that they were his presidents, but still. Actually, it could be that that makes it even worse. Nice attitude and pose, though.

Dawnie-- the ocean looked beautiful beneath her and I liked her outfit, but there was something just a bit too arrogant in the tilt of her chin. Yet, I can't help liking that about it.

Gim-- I like the idea of him growing to a height to match the Stratolab... he even looks like he's concentrating on growing some more, as he's held in stiffly. Love the shorts, though.

Gas Girl and Night Girl are the best, this round, for me. GG looks a nanosecond away from a Lucy/Ethel comic scene, for some reasons. NG very much eclipses her surroundings. Maybe there should be points off for that? Nah...

Jacques is fresh and appealing. This should be an ad for something or other. The tourism board of _____? Some would take exception to that, I guess.

Lazon-- great expression and a good marriage of subject and background. What's he wearing though? Makes you wonder, doesn't it?

Sigh-- I vote off Pulsar Stargrave and Dawnstar. But I don't wanna do it!!!!

Late and puffing here's my vote (I guess I can only vote to reject one now).

Dawnie (even though it kind of feels strange to reject anyone of them).
I'd expect Dawnie to fly unencumbered and happy over the open sea, not try to emulate a rather haughty stance that has nothing to do with the background. It just isn't Dawnie. My vote goes to her.

A few comments on the rest (they were all great as sketches anyway).

Dreamer(as a judge): Nura looks incredible in everything anyway. [Big Grin]

Pulsar Stargrave: I'd expect him to try to look bigger than the Pyramids, the Empire State Building, the Earth itself if he could, and that's what he went for! His pose worked for me. [Smile]

Gim: "I can be as tall as the Laboratoty. Well, almost" he seems to say slightly amused/annoyed. Heheheh. I liked him. Great composition.

Lydda: Great pose, Lydda is always cute and sexy.
I wonder whether there could have been some sort of interaction in the image between the contestant and the Global Tunnel. Am I making sense here? (Anyway she'd be my second rejection).

Jacques: Beautfiul painting, Jackques looks so happy and joyful.

Gas Girl: Always a favorite, she has the interaction I thought lacked in the Night Girl sketch. Very, very sensual. Yum!

Lazon: Kinda scary and dangerous, but also mischievous and playfully naughty. Great interaction between him and the background.
What is he wearing, though?

Poor Gim. This isn't the first time he's been rejected.

His ultra-secret origin is that his scientist father was working on an experimental 'male enhancement formula' and Gim snuck into his lab one day and drank it on a dare.

He attempted to join the Legion with his new 'super-power,' as Enormous Schlong Boy, with the power to drop his tights and stun evildoers into shocked silence. After a few moments of stunned silence the three founders voted 2 to 1 to reject him. (Technically, twenty-three to one, but it was ruled that Garth's frantic pressing of the reject button only counted as one vote. Rokk later claimed that he had meant to also vote to reject, and just hit the wrong button. Imra patted his arm and said, "What's important is that you believe that Rokk.")

His father worked tirelessly to refine the formula, and Gim applied again with a now-proportionally enhanced anatomy as Colossal Boy.

Posted by Blockade Boy on :

Gi Gi was pretty upset in the hospital during their Mars vacation from SP Academy training. I bet that's when Pops gave him the new formula. Tricky how they attempted to cover this up, making it seem as if the meteor had put him in the hospital when it was probably a sprain to the crotchal area that'd done it.

This also would explain why Gi Gi was such a smiley face in the beginning of that vacation and a Sunboy hopping tart after. She didn't exactly beg the downsized Gim not to join LSH so they could have their careers together.

I find a lot of credibility in this report.

As for Pulsar's and Gim's rejection, we should have predicted this.

Tall only works for female and non-humanoid models.

Nice round.

Although Veilmist did mistake Gas Girl for an Earth Girl. She is from Lallor.

Gas Girl looks suitably threatening and sexy. She really pulls of this outfit.

Invisible Kid II looks fierce.

I love Night Girl's storm cloud of hair. I would not mess with her.

Lazon looks like he is ready for playing in the dungeon.

I like Dawnstar's valkerie look and the slice of the moon eye make-up. I do wish there had been more costume.

From my initial take, I had it between Dawnstar and Lazon to reject. In looking at all the contestants again, I'd say there are too many nice things about Dawnstar this round.

Good-bye Lazon.

PS: I hope Marte recovers from her "diplomatic issues".

KHUNDA UNDA DRESSED

Gas Girl. Good work.

IK2 aka Cocka2. This is a pretty sharp outfit (discounting the heavy metal -- sorry, Veilmist)

Night Girl. Top holo. Is Lydda the one to beat?

Dawnstar. I hope Khundian double-stick space-tape is all the rage this sola year too.

OUT:

LAZON.
You're boring and you have jars on your arms. (Mean again? Gotta be cruel to be Khund.)

Interesting, very interesting. I like the uniqueness of this challenge. Good work Dean!! [Big Grin]

I've gotta vote out Lydda. Her hair, her pose, her outfit-- everything about it bothers me in this one. She just didn't come through.

On the plus side, I loved (!!) Jaques. [Invisible Kid II] Seriously love. And, I agree with Quis about Dawny's Valkyrie look. I dig it. [Dawnstar]

Posted by Set on :

Oh Gas Girl, I take back every mean thing I said about you! Very nice!

IK2, very, um, busy ensemble. But he's doing it justice, so that's saying something.

Oh Lydda, quit this soulless business and run away from me! Looks can fade, but tawdry lust lasts forever! Love the thermonuclear action going on with the hair. Nothing says avante garde like a hairdo of mass destruction. Blousy pirate sleeves and a bare midriff? Thigh high boots and a thong with butt-cape? Gah. I even like the earrings!

Lazon, after Gim you're my favorite male in the competition, but my God man, what were you thinking? Words fail me. As does my man, Lazon.

Nice winged headgear Dawny. The belt thing is a little odd, though. The strappy bits are neat. Hint, dear, you have enormous gorgeous feathery props attached to your back. Flap them or something. Nobody else has this advantage, use it to beat them about the head and shoulders!

I'm tempted to give Lazon another chance to shine, but then I look at that outfit and all forgiveness fades. Bye Lazon. Better luck next time.

Posted by Hunt Drouin on :

Well, I say keep Lazon. This wasn't his best effort so I blame it on Veilmist.

Dawnstar looks hot and so does Gas Girl.

Jacques, calm down the hair, dude.

Speaking of hair, I vote to eliminate Lydda this round.

Great work and lots of fun, Dean. Thanks for taking the time and effort to do it!

Posted by Mystery Lad on :

Gas Girl: Dragonbat Wings? I could see this as a permanent look for GG with a tamed-down, open-topped version of this headdress with some simpler gloves. I like the pose, the face-stripes and the smoldering eyes.

And she's not relying on her cloudy-hair! Good one!

Invisible Kid: I'm having a flashback to Mohawk-wearing Storm of the '80's (or was that '90's?). 1/2 Karate Kid, 1/2 Tharok. Doesn't work for me. But I love the facial marking and the vortex background.

Hairstyle would've been a bit much, but OK. Earring would've been OK. Hairstyle and earring? Oy.

Night Girl: Look out! An atomic mushroom-cloud is sprouting from Lydda's head! Er- oh- that's her hairdo? Hee-hee! Never mind!

She looks like a 1920's flapper/vamp. Louise Brooks gone Theda Bara.

Seeing this makes me think that she designed the old Cosmic Boy nipple-flap costume... and *made* him wear it (he owed her, after the Shadow Lass/Night Girl team-up when he stepped out with Cindee whatever-her-name-was).

Lazon: Everything works but the gauntlets. Is he the Khundish version of a milkmaid? They cover his hands, don't they? How does he use his fingers? I'll bet his boots are ornamented, to balance out the costume.

Dawnstar: "Khundian skin pigments?" "Twilight Rose"? Cool. I like the Valkyrie-ish head-dressing. And the subtle facial make-up. The slicked-back hair works. Best of the round, for me.

I vote out Invisible Kid. Leave the funky head-treatments to the 'other' Invisible Kid.

Gas Girl: Sharp-edged and fierce. Oddly enough, I keep switching from seeing those wings on the helmet as dragon wings to seeing them as floppy bunny ears, and that kind of wrecks the first impression...

IK II: Wow, you've made Jacques' miserable skunk stripe palatable. It would be so great if he just stuck with that hair style. The outfit is pretty busy, but cool all the same.

Night Girl: I'm speechless. Just, totally awed. Until now, I think I've liked your mermaid Lu best of all your pictures (those I've seen, anyway). But this is a serious contender for the top spot! She's just, so, so... otherworldly different !

Lazon: Some kind of accident had to be involved to create this outfit. But where? In a bottling plant? In a diaper factory? In an Italian restaurant, hence the pizza wheel stuck to his chest?

Dawnstar: Not much clothing or hair to be seen, so she looks a bit bare, or fleshy, somehow (which is probably an asset if you happen to like Twilight Rose skin).

Reject Lazon - Out with Mr. Troll Hair!

I'm still bummed about my boy Gim [Frown]

But...

I'll vote to eliminate Gas Girl this time.

The Empress MUST make that connection with Veilmist. Maybe drag that stuckup tart Marte Allon along.

This is getting tough. The gents are getting bolder and better with each round.

Generally I find both all the ladies a bit underarmoured and we know that's an Earth product.

Dawnstar is outstanding, the skin pigment ingenious.

Down to Gas Girl and Nighty. I like risk takers and for me, Nighty went too safe here. Not a good idea in the challenge courts.

Rejected [Frown] Nightgirl.

I can't decide. They are all so good.

I vote for Lazon.

Posted by Doctor One on :

Wow, what a wonderful round. This topic was an excellent idea, Veilmist is a great clothes designer.

I, too like Lazon the least in this round, but I'm not going to vote against him, I would really like to see what else Dean has in store for him in later rounds. So, who do I vote out?

Not Dawnstar, love her skin tone and her valkyria look. Great job on her.

Night Girl is my favourite for the round. She just looks so... weird. When I first saw her I laughed out loud, but now I keep going back and looking at her again. She looks like something out of a nightmare....

IK is great, too. Love the way you play with his white strip. He looks the most elegant of them all

So, I guess that leaves Gas Girl. Not that she looks bad, on the contrary. I guess my main concern is that she does not look like herself at all (if you hadn't put her name on the picture, I wouldn't have known who it was)

So, I vote to reject Gas Girl

You're right. Sorry. First time voter. Just wanted to comment on how great Nura looked.

Anyways, a great round as always. Veilmist's comments on her designs were very funny like the "shy, demure type" one about Lydda's eye-popping sexy outfit.

I'm also amazed how in-character the judges comments are. Emerald Empress in particular has been incredibly in-character in all contests.

My vote goes to Lazon (again it wasn't easy to choose)

The margin was just untouchable! Lazon's light faded!

Since it was so clear, I actually completed the top four's holos. I've also pencilled and written the hosts' and judges' parts, I just need to scan, letter and color that, so I'll need some more time. Probably be posted tomorrow.

It's getting close!

Hey Sketchy,

I just had an idea for the next competition. Top Number 2. All the runners up from the previous competitions compete.

Posted by Blockade Boy on :

Wow. Looking at Lazon's "rejection" montage reminds just how stunning this competition has been.

Question?

Has Arn Strikl ever designed for a competition? I don't think we ever did get a look at the wedding dress he designed for Phantom Girl.

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Quis, I have considered both an "All Star" Pinup Model competition, where the winners from each previous contest compete for the ultimate title, AND a Runner's Up edition, so that previously eliminated models could get another shot. I suppose it's been too fun putting new characters into the spotlight to go back, though I'm very pleased to have Night Girl return.

BB, I have actually considered a "wedding gown" theme for a challenge. It could still happen. Did we ever *meet* Arn Strikl in the book or was the name just mentioned? Yes, we're always looking for hot new designers here at Pinup Models, Inc!

I have an idea for the next competition, but I'm not sure when it will happen.

Arn was only off-camera I think, mentioned in one of the "omnicam" pages after the "five year gap." I'm not even sure if we saw the wedding dress. Maybe in a flashback when they got around to telling the story of Tinya's disappearance?

Night Girl It's her colour but I think its all little too much.

Gas Girl. Stunning indeed.

Dawnstar yeah it works for her. Lester picked a good piece.

Invisible Kid II, Why aren't you holding a hamburger? Channelling some Jughead Jones i think.

I vote to eliminate Night Girl.

Posted by Blockade Boy on :

Buh BYE! Marte

IK II and Jughead. I agree with the comparison. About time he loosened up a bit. It appeals to me. The moping around act was getting old.

Dawnstar. hmmmmm. To me it just seems to clash with her eyes and she hasn't shown much risk with her hair in this competition.

Night Girl. I agree with Tamper, this is her color. Could have been a bit more subtle. I blame Spiffany on this one, subtles never been his style.

Gas Girl. Same deal as Nighty. I prefer a bit more subtle but the color works.

Reject: Dawnstar

The judges' comments were enjoyable as usual. I love how the entire contest is almost like a story and things happen with the judges too. [Smile]

My vote goes to Dawnstar. While the jewel reminded me of the star beautiful Dawny had on her forehead in days long past (but never forgotten)it didn't "feel" like Dawnstar, and the rest of the contestants looked much more comfortable.

Lydda is incredible! What a lady! A real gorgeous diva! I'm sure the Emerald Empress would agree if she were a judge!

Tal is a doll! She never seemed like a shy girl to me, but here she is definitely happy but a bit shy, a bit embarrassed which makes her even cuter. Exquisite!

Jacques as Jughead? [LOL] Well, he seems relaxed and enjoying himself. He gives me the impression he's laughing inside. Nice. [Smile]

Night Girl-- I agree that it's a bit too much, but I think it still works.

Gas Girl-- She, however, could have gone with a bit more than just the earrings. It also looks like the camera caught her before she was quite ready.

Dawnstar-- The look on her face is actually a bit weird, and I think the jewel is kind of distracting. I guess it's just a kind of weird choice to have attention focused on your forehead of all of you assets.

Jacques-- I kept think he didn't quite look like himself, but I couldn't figure out why. Maybe it's the Jughead comparison.

Reject: Gas Girl.

Posted by Doctor One on :

Lydda wins this challenge, hands down. Great picture. Yes, it's all a bit much, but I don't think that's a bad thing.

Gas Girl is also very good. All that red, and the vapor on her head, she looks like she's smouldering

IK2: I'm not a big fan of Jughead, so I didn't catch on the joke early on. A bit goofy, but OK.

Dawny: Didn't like this picture at all. It's that 'heroin' look that was making headlines a few years back, she looks literally sick. Hate that style.

I vote to reject Dawnstar.

Posted by Dain on :

Heh. When I first saw Tal's gaseous "hair" back in the 80s I had thought it was some strange fashion fad. Like an extreme 30th century equivalent of a new wave/Cyndi Lauper/Sinead O'Connor 'do.

Still can't shake that impression, but I like it anyway, especially in a close-up sketch like this one! [Big Grin]

Huh. I really liked that challenge. [Big Grin] I feel like Dawny and Gas Girl's expressions didn't quite match up with this challenge. And Lydda had a bit more 'bling' than necessary...

But I feel like Jaques was just sort of there. No spark. No magic. Nothing special about his image or jewelry. And I do realize it's a bit harder with a guy but still.

IK2 gets my vote out.

Posted by Set on :

Lydda, as always, owns my heart. And any other part of me she wants to claim.

While Lydda went 'heavy' on the jewels, Gas Girl went completely minimal, and it really worked for her.

Dawnstar also favored a minimalist look, and I really love the crystal / stained-glass look to that star on her forehead. Beautiful.

IK2. Man, disappear already vanishing boy.

Vote out Invisible Kid 2: Revenge of the fashion-impaired.

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Thank you for the votes and comments!

It's fun to have the judges back. Seriously, I start out just expecting them to judge the contest, and some kind of muse comes along and gets me going on their sub-plots! I had NO idea Marte was going to have such an emotional reaction to Gim's elimination. I had no idea she was going to turn to glass. I had no idea she was going to shatter!

I vote to reject Dawnstar.

She is trying to pull off the regal look, but looks like she is sucking a lemon. I do like her jewel.

Night Girl choose the right color jewel to suit her. But I don't see Lyddia with long fingernails.

Gas Girl looks sophisticated and sulty.

Invisible Kid II looked like he was having fun playing King.

Posted by Mystery Lad on :

I vote out IK2. He looks like a frat boy who's been raiding the costume department at the local college's theater.

Gas Girl was my favorite of this round-- though I loved Dawny's jeweled forehead piece (does a piece of jewelry worn there have an actual name?) and loved even more the detail in her eyes, something about her face was off, for me. I'm not sure what.

Who knew Lydda was such a ham? Guess the choice of a bouffant hair-do in the 31st century should've been a clue.

Poor Marte! I hope she appears whole and hale before the competition's over. I guess now the rumors about her falling to pieces during times of stress while president can be confirmed. Is this a sort of negative super-power, one she gained when kidnapped all those years ago?

Lydda was by far the best this round!

Dawnstar...traditional.

Isn't it strange and thrilling when they do that? I've felt it when writing my stories and novel(s). It's like the characters have a mind and life of their own regardless of what the "author" has in store for them, and they just do what *they* want! [Smile]

That's one reason, among many, why I'm enjoying these contests so much. The unexpected can happen either *in* the contest itself, or through the judges!

HAUTE AS ICE

This round's all about the expressions.

Gas Girl. Looks like she's up to something. Nice! I dunno about the dangly earrings though.

IK2. Bemused Jacques! Tee hee!

Night Girl. Hmm. A more "model-y" pose -- there's nothing wrong with that, but GG and IK2 show far more personality. Lydda's showcasing the gems more than the gems are showcasing her. The mosaic background is quite nice but I don't care for the color...that's a personal preference, others may love it.

OUT:

Dawnstar.
Expression kind of unpleasant.

Lydda looks amazing! Definitely my favorite!

Gas Girl has been a pleasant surprise throughout.

Dawnstar is fierce! She really pops! (been watching ANTM marathons)

Posted by Mystery Lad on :

GAS GIRL: There's a bit of a Malicifent (Malificent?- the witch from SLEEPING BEAUTY) vibe for me.

NIGHT GIRL: ELPHABA! She looks *great*! Her second best, but only by a smidgeon. That owl-inspired dress looms in my memory.

I sort of wish Lydda actually had an owl, like the Doctors Mid-nite/Midnight/Mid-night.

INVISIBLE KID: Where are the Supremes? I like the stripe on his face and this pic in general, but I'm still voting out Jacques.

Posted by Dain on :

I don't know if I can choose this time. All 3 are wonderful! I love wizards and witches (mostly the imaginary ones) and I hope this challenge will be part of another contest so we'll see more Legion characters in sorcerous garb!

Lydda is the sexiest Elphaba I've ever seen in a perfect composition. The lighting, her costume, her expression, the owl. Everything blends wonderfully. A real magical lady!

Jacques reminds me of my favorite rpg game Mage:The Ascension, a modern/futuristic wizard with a bit of 60s thrown in. Mysterious and alluring.

Tal's heavy make-up doesn't change her "doe-eyed" expression, that's so in contrast with her "power" costume. Gorgeous composition and that gaseous "tentacle" adds flare making the design even more pleasing artistically.
The head-thingy did remind me a bit of Maleficent, as Mystery Lad pointed out. There's a slightly sinister "vibe" to the costume (maybe because the head-thingy looks a bit like horns). It didn't spoil the effect for me, I don't think Gassie looks sinister all in all, but I have to reject one contestant, even grasping at straws trying to find something I didn't like! So my vote for rejection goes to....sigh...Gas Girl.

On a side note, it's incredible what a potential the Legion has, and how many different stories, worlds, situations, styles etc we could see if the writers of the magazine simply realised what a powerhouse they have with the Legion. Not to mention all the artistic styles, fashion designs, characters designs they could use, like Sketchy uses in his contests and in the work of other fan/semi-pro artists I've seen.

Oh, IK wins this one! Love that look on him.

So, who do I vote out. In this particular competition, I like Night Girl the least. But she's been very strong in the past. I'd also rather see her win than either of the other two contestants.

Gas Girl is OK, but again, I can't really tell that it's her. I suppose it's my own fault, I'm so enthranced by her gaseous hair that when you can't see it I don't recognize the character at all. So...

I vote to reject Gas Girl.

Lyddia just rockets back in this challenge. Nice!

Jacques was looking very 5 year later mystical.

Gas Girl, whom I have loved throughout this competition, really let me down here. Nothing to really let you know it is her. If I had been her consultant, I would have told her to raise her arms and make her hands gaseous. Vapor always is a good effect for mystics and as someone who can generate vapors, she blew it.

It would heighten the "Maleficent" effect but it'd also add drama and character, I think. It'd be fantastic if her hands were gaseous, as you suggest, especially if Sketchy added another tentacle effect or something.
On the other hand, if Jacques had raised his arms, a dramatic gesture that many wizards/witches use before they disappear, he'd look more powerful and maybe even dangerous. [Smile]

Actually, I think Jacques' hand placement was right for his picture. He seemed to be holding a gem in a mystical sort of way, focusing his energy to trigger the mystical gem.

I think Gas Girl should win.

It's easy to draw a beautiful picture of either of these women (at least, it is for you, Sketchy. I wouldn't try it.) but I think Gas Gil's shot is just so much more dramatic. Excellent work on both, Dean, but I prefer the mists.

Posted by Doctor One on :

Difficult decision. In this particular round I liked Gas Girl's portrait better, she looks beautiful and mysterious.

Who should win? I went back and revisited all the previous pictures, and compared the two contestants.

1. Zaton's Sexy Outfits: Night Girl wins hands down with her owl-gown
2. Colorful Headshots: Gas Girl wins
3. Seven Wonders: Gas Girl wins hands down. I really didn't like Lydda in that round.
4. Khundian Fashion: Night Girl is both strange and haunting. She wins.
5. Jewels: Night Girl is magnificent.
6. Witches: I'm going to go with Gas Girl on this one, Nighty didn't do very much for me on that round
7. Final Head Shot: Gas Girl wins hands down.

So, with the smallest of margins, Gas Girl wins.

I vote to reject Night Girl.

Gas Girl is amazing, you've completely captured whats she's about(no easy task I would imagine). However, I just can't take my eyes off Night Girl. She's stunning in this picture. Her eyes draw you in and keep you there. And as she's had the WOW factor going on for most of the competition I think she should win. So I vote to reject Gas Girl.

So hard to choose between two of my favorite minor LSH characters!

Going just by this pic, I'd give it to Lydda. This is the first portrait that really captures *her* essence, IMO. And it's beautiful.

Since she also had two of the most impressive pics in earlier rounds (Elphaba the witch and the owl-gown), I'd say she's earned the victory.

Gas Girl's a worthy second, in that she had *no* mis-steps, IMO. It hurts to type it, but I still have to reject my gal, Tal.
