Hello Legion World!

Many of you know that I am a big fan of MLLASH's very creative writing and fandango artwork. It seems like I've always done fan art for the various creations he and others have come up with, such as Matter Eater Lad: The Series, Trash Lass, Uncanny Excellents, etc.

Well, it is Lash's childhood creation, Starsearchers, which has inspired me to be more than just a sketch lad, and plunge into the world of sequential comic art.

The intention is for Lash to write the stories and for me to illustrate and letter them. We will start off by posting here at Legion World and at the CBR Artist & Writers Showcase message board. We will also look into other web comic venues.

Right now, I will post some of my sketches. Sometimes I give my spin on what the character could look like. Sometimes I go with what Lash designed. Soon, we will present a sneak preview of what to expect for the Starsearchers, then we will begin telling the tales.

I'm very excited to work on this project. I think it will be a LOT of fun. I'm lucky Lash is into it.

PLEASE provide feedback of all sorts! Lash has offered to answer any questions that come up.

Enjoy!

9 Lil Aliens

Obviously, my take on Lash's group shot.

Omarr and his wicked queen...

Their outfits are based on Aztek Gods with starfield fabrics, giving them, I think, a very Cockrum-esque look.

Here's one more character sketch. I asked Lash if it'd be okay if Vamp was a redhead who wore red. He said yes!

That's it for now. Stay tuned for the preview!

I love 'em all, Sketch.
Your stuff is always wonderful.

But,
is that big green guy with the tentacles who looks so angry my darlin' sweetie K'zle????!!! -

Ohhhhh, K'zle!
boohoo

That *is* indeed K'zle, Shady. I think he looks awesome! We can thank Dean for suggesting he be featured in the upcoming short-story starring these guys:

Also featuring Krysalis, Seven and Johnny Comet. I fell in love with Dean's incredibly creative visuals for Krys and Seven, SO much better than anything I ever envisioned!

WOW, Dean-- first time I've seen your group shot of the young Starsearchers! BREATHTAKING to behold! I got a headrush looking at the image, that's how excited I am!!!!

This looks exciting. I'll read it!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

I have a feeling K'zle will become a fan favorite! I suppose he was trying to look intimidating for the portraits, but most of the time I'm sure he'll have a sweeter face, more like the way Lash draws him.

I can't wait to finish the preview story and begin the actual series!

Thanks for the feedback on these sneak peek images!

(The group shot of the 9 Lil Aliens was a surprise for Lash. [Smile] )

You are ever the sweet heart, Dean!
Draw darlin' K'zle any way you want. You're right, he's a teen on a team and they like looking fierce!

I love that you've used so many of my favorites of LASH's creations and I ALWAYS enjoy your wonderful productions.

Here's an image of SEVEN I did based solely on Dean's face-shot he sent me awhile back.

I suppose this means I should get going on a script for issue 1, huh? I want to have stuff ready for you once you finish the CBR preview. I pretty much have the story outlined in my head, just gotta put it to 'paper'.

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

....Sketch and Lash go into a behind-the-scenes plotting session.....

LOTS to come!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

I enlisted my 19 year old son's help with some costume design for the characters. He adds details that I don't think of.

He also had a BRILLIANT idea for space craft. Can't wait to show you guys!

..but it's not ready yet! [Wink]

Posted by MLLASH on :

I am starting the # 1 script today! Can't wait to see your son's designs!!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

SO much design work going on. Head spinning. Loving it.

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Just wanted to check in to say that I actually am doing a lot of work on this, just sort of spread out amongst other things (like Christmas stuff).

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

I re-did Krysalis' costume. I wanted her to have more of a "spun from silk" look than a "spun from ice crystals" look. She will be in very shiny pale blue.
 -

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Rikk gets almost armor-like attire, but he has excellent gadgets/accessories that coordinate with his powers, such as anti-shock tensors, longitudal dampener, and of course, stablization shoe soles.

Since his skin (it's skin isn't it, Lash?) is sorta tan/brown, I like the idea of keeping him in earth tones. His various sensors and nodes will glow - we thought blue, but that's not 100% right now.
 -

Posted by Candle on :

Pink goes nice with brown and might change things up to a little unexpected (I can see the kidding now, pink lights on such a macho looking guy!)

And I absolutely LOVE your new look for Krys,
very beautiful and very different.
Exciting, exciting!
[Smile]

Posted by MLLASH on :

Krys and Rikk look GREAT, Sketchy!! I love them both!!

Yeah, Rikk's skin is brownish/tanish.

AWESOME!!

Merry Christmas to all the Lees!!

Oh, yeah-- I've started the # 1 script. Mucho focus on the young aliens, and told from The Elder's point of view!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

I did this sketch kind of a while ago, but I just wanted to keep Starsearchers happening. I'm still working on sequentials.....

 -

Posted by Candle on :

I really like that drawing, the one so light, like a cloud, the other dark like an earthy desert sunset.
Even the hair styles match the personas.
The earthy gal's hair looks like a Christmas cactus!
[Smile]

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Thanks, Candle.

That's Starlette on the left. She was worshipped like a goddess, so I plan on presenting her in ever changing lavish hairstyles and outfits.

That's Gorgonna on the right. My goal was to mix Greek goddess with Rastafarian. I LOVE the way it worked out, and lucky me, Lash likes it too.

Posted by Candle on :

Gorgonna, huh?
So the hair looks like sea snakes, not cacti.
[Smile]
I LOVE the flattened tails of sea snakes.
I don't think I've ever seen a Gorgon using them, they just use vipers mostly.

That's brilliant, Dean and perfect.

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

My son and I just had a BLAST creating the Starsearchers characters in the Soul Caliber video game. First, it's really fun to make the players look like and dress like our characters, but secondly, it's a THRILL to see them animated!

I hardly know where to start, so I'll start with Seven!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Okay, here's a face shot. Now, SC doesn't have a lot of options for hairstyles (certainly not enough for me!), so I did my best. Please imagine her large oval gemstone in the middle of her forehead...

I have a bunch of pictures of Krysalis too, but I want to touch them up in Photoshop to give them the full effect.

And Dean-- don't EVEN think you slipped Cobalta past me! [Big Grin]

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Okay, the 7 page preview is posted! Please let Lash and I know what you think, here in this thread.

Question.. do any of you go to any web-comic sites where you think this would be a good addition? I'll be posting it at the Comic Book Resources Artist & Writer Showcase mb.

Let's hear it!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

I'll start by complimenting Lash's creativity and sense of adventure! Thanks, Lash!!!

Posted by MLLASH on :

You humble me with your immense talent and ability to turn crap into black angus! Thank YOU and I'm looking forward to more!

Posted by Candle on :

I missed 'Cobalta' [Frown]
And I wish that you'd do a link to the Resourse site since I can't seem to find it. [Frown]
(I'm tired.)

The whole preview was fascinating and delicious.

Thanks for the wonderful way that you kept the innate charm of MLLASH's characters while adding your own brilliance, Sketch.

Loved the Adventure style cover, it was a wonderful way to introduce the story line-up.
Awwww, K'zle!
And the little butterfly gal was so cute, too!

It's a given, really, after all of Dean's various projects, that the characters would be beautiful.
The action, something that we don't see a huge amount of from Sketch, is pretty good, too.

I got a little confused when the flowers turned to people, who then disappeared and glop bats showed up, but that might just me, rather than the story.

The hardest part of this medium, imo, is story flow.
I think that's true for any storyteller(s), but especially where visuals are concerned.
It's important from panel to panel AND from page to page.
I think you both had varying success with that idea, but over all, were successful.

I'm certainly in awe of you both and am really looking forward to any future works that you do together and separately!

Any confusion is my fault-- should have made it clearer that the interstellar transmatter/dohicky was bouncing the group from planet to planet... and Overthink eventually got 'em back to the ship.

It seems obvious to me because I'm the one writing the story, and knows what is going on from the get-go-- it needs to be made clear to the readers!! Good call, Shady, and advice I will be sure to remember!

I consider page 1 to be more of a splash page than a cover, but it's all good, and thank you!

Especially kind statement. I could go ahead and give a self-critique, but my goal will always be to keep trying and move forward.

Thank you for the compliment. My interpretation of the script was that the cast was moved abruptly from place to place and that it was all confusing and disorienting. Sounds like it worked on you, Shady! But I wonder, in order to address any confusion, if we could have explained what the transmatter/porter device did before Overthink tested it. Also, I wonder if I should have placed that aqua colored glow on the team as they shifted locations.

I'm certainly in awe of you both and am really looking forward to any future works that you do together and separately!
Thank you SO much, and I'm really looking forward to the next script I get from Lash.

This will be set up sort of web-comic style rather than traditional comic *book* pages. Also, we will pad each update with fun stuff, as only Lash and I can! (No presh, Lash!)

I meant the CBR Artists and Writers site - I can't seem to find CBR, for some reason I never seem to get there.
Not your worry though, I was tired and a little frustrated when I wrote that.
sorry

The agua aura would have been exactly right and not intrusive in the story but at the same time, it would have given me a clue that a change was coming, especially if it was a follow through from the first time that they jumped, which it was, if I remember correctly.

That's the kind of creative thinking that helps the writer create the flow need for story cohesion.
Proud of ya.

Arachne, thank you for your comment, too! I'd LOVE to see sequentials from you -- and Starsearchers fan art!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe someday. I'm not sure I'd be any good at sequentials.

Faboo!!
I love the eyePOPPING colors. I wish some of the background surfaces had a little more texture instead of being solid colors.

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Yay! A faboo!! from rhino! Thank you!

Well, based on the sneak peek Lash gave me, there will be LOTS of interesting settings in the upcoming storylines which will need to be clearly defined, so details will definitely increase.

If I may, I found myself getting more and more comfortable with doing sequentials as I worked on them. In fact, I began to enjoy investigating ways to make the sequences be even more interesting than my first instinct. This, I hope will only continue and improve with more time/effort.

I'm SO glad this is happening!

I was thrilled when I saw this the other night, and pm'd Nighty instead of posting here, so that people might see someone else's name besides mine.

I thanked him profusely!

Lash (and everyone else), we can link to that site, so we should start the campaign of promotion however, wherever we can. Please tell everyone you know about this series! Lash and I want to become famous! (heh!)

Such fun!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Okay.... gut reactions.
a. LOVE IT!!
b. Wow, are those the only character designs I posted? I did like, a jillion of them, but it looks like I only posted a few.
c. My screen is kinda old. It's a square shape intead of widescreen, so I have to scroll around to see the whole page. I wonder if it would be bad to have a reduced size available for those with dinosaur computers like me?

Notes to self...
1. Include page numbers! I'm annoyed when the comics I read don't include them. Why didn't I inlcude them?
2. If this format is used again, it looks like it would be best to do this...
* first window-
left side blank, with kewl starfield

right side actual cover image - with large logo, credits, blurb. The current "cover" image is actually a preliminary character study. Really close to the final designs, but some definite tweaking has happened since.

*second window -
left side, inside cover to include title, credits, info about us, LW, etc. Maybe even a "previously..." section. I'd be open to input on what could go on this page.

right side, story begins. Either a splash page or not, depending on the story, the script, the final format, etc.

next windows-
all about story. I must remember that they will be looked at side-by-side, so I have to keep that in mind as I create the visuals, to avoid confusion. As stated above, I have to remember to include page numbers.

final window -
left side, last page of story

right side, back cover - promote other projects by Lash and/or Dean, the next issue, etc.

Um, I don't know if this type of site will be used again, for future stories, but I sure do love what Nighty did for now!

Umm, hecks YEAH!! [Big Grin]

Posted by Nightcrawler on :

I can shrink them down. Maybe make them pop up as the mouse goes over them.

I'm forced to scroll as well, but I didn't want to mess with the pages.

I could even create a main portal linking to each of your issues in a separate web page, if you guys want. I just decided to throw everything I could find in there for now. I've been wanting to use that script to make a virtual comic for awhile, but haven't found anything worth doing it for until now.

And, Dean send me your other designs and if you have a proper cover for this story, I'll replace it. I used that image cause I needed a cover to make it all work.

This is a line up of the Rexallian military, starting with the Emperor himself, then a high ranking commander, ending with a foot solider.

Please imagine them with Rexal Red skin and with orange, black and white as their main colors.

The hand weapons are optional.

Oh, and these were 100% designed by Jakob (Jayke) Lee. (My 20 yr old son.) I just provided him with the blank figures.

Thanks, Jayke!

Consider Doc Battle approved! I can't wait for you to read her first scene.... it ain't pretty!

Temp's lookin good!

Jayke's got it going ON. I'm digging the look of the hand-help weapons so much, I'm thinking they could be used by some of the soldiers to intensify and focus their natural powers...

Okay, Dean now has the first 17 pages of issue 1 in his hot hands... well, inbox, actually...

and I think I'm going to go ahead and type out the rest and just send it on in. I'm so excited to see this full issue!

Also excited to see Deddy's Dr. Battle!

Dean, please inform your son about the creation of JAYKOB COMET, Johnny's younger brother who will be showing up down the road to cause trouble and fun for our crew. This hastily-tossed together windows paint is just to give you guys a sounding board to work on designs for him...

 -

...My little thank you to Jayke for his contributions. Jaykob's going to be a way-fun addition to the STARSEARCHERS universe!

Okay, # 1 script is DONE and SENT. Awaiting Dean's approval. I'm jazzed (or it's less gay, less hyperbolic equivalent: excited)!

Posted by MLLASH on :

I just finished the first 7 pages of # 2's script! Whew-- it's been a real STARSEARCHERS Sunday. I'm officially punching off the clock now!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Wow, great job, Lash! I still have stuff to do to get the first sequence prepped, then we'll launch.

Hey friends, it's really fun and exciting!!! Stay tuned!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Sorry to be a big tease, but I just posted the finished cover to #1. The rest of the first part needs just a *bit* more work....

How'd you guys like the cover?

Posted by Candle on :

Somehow, I missed that it was a try-out cover as a sketch when it's so obvious in the finished one!

I love it as I love K'zle!

I wish this was easier on you Dean and someone else could do the coloring for you.
sigh

Beautiful fun!

Posted by MLLASH on :

Dean, it is beautiful!

Like Shady, I worry about you handling the pencils, lettering and coloring... that's a LOT to do! Then I see INKS too... Dean, you're going to kill yourself!! I love the pencils to colors look of the preview. Isn't that easier?

On the other hand, this series is Dean's visually... he makes the calls (with my sometimes-input which normally amounts to: That's Awesome!!) and I've thought they are all excellent ones.

I'm thrilled he is into this!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Hey everyone! I've posted the cover, the inside cover and pages 1-5 of issue #1! I hope you like it!

Don't worry about me. I'll figure out a good way of working on this project and maintaining the rest of my RL! I'm hoping for actual regular updates, but I'm currently not quite yet that regimented.

Please let me know your thoughts on the new pages!

Posted by Candle on :

Very clever, you two!
The space ship looks a little like a TV Dinner with a cover and he's thinking about food.
heheh

I'll go look up the characters again in . . . fandango, they're wonderful.
I don't remember purple manga guy or SSSSSSS.

SSSSSSS is particularly impressive!

The idea that a 'bug' planet would have multiple species of sentients is especially kewl.
Insects just have SO many possibilities.
I love it.

The format is wonderful, too.
I really appreciate being able to enlarge everything for easier reading.

The purple thought thingys are easy to read, again, something I like.

The coloring is beautiful and distinctive.
Very satisfying on so many levels.

Thank-you both!

DEAN, I LOVE IT!!!

I know we had some concern about the talking-heads opening pages, but I think you made them so beautiful, like a calm before the storm, I don't find it a concern at all...

Colors are amazing, lettering is amazing... YOU are amazing. Thanks for making my script look perfect!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Candle, Lash,
Thank you for the very kind compliments. I really enjoyed working on those pages.

I went ahead and did rough layouts for the rest of issue #1!

Let me tell you, pages 1 -5 ARE the calm before the storm. The action is coming!

Lash's script is fantastic, very well crafted.

The way it will work is, I will post the next 5 pages, then the next 5, then the next 6, for a total of 21 story pages, plus there will be a inside back cover and a back cover. Right now I don't want to commit to an actual deadline schedule, but I do want to get ahead, artwise, so there won't be a lag.

It was really fun sketching out all the characters and all the action. I'm sure I'll post sneak peek previews at some point.

Don't forget that the comic is on drunkduck.com as well. We have some pretty decent stats as far as I know and some nice comments. It's cuz it's a labor of love!

Is SSSSSSSS Mharva?!
WOW!
And I found The Elder.
Very nice creative crossover on him.
I LOVE the blue eyes on him.

Ronal is still a darlin', and I like Drey, too!

Poor Hoppa, it must be so hard being an insect in a mammal universe.
sigh
In MIB, the insects were automatically the bad guys of the universe!
I hope she's up to the challenge!

So, everyone's fighting the Empire.
Last time I went for something like that I met Han Solo!
WoooHoooo!

Michael, Dean...I split up the site to accommodate the new material.

Can either/both of you guys give me any introductory text to describe each section?

Thanks!

(I'm still working on a way to display the book and magnify the pages at the same time.)

Posted by MLLASH on :

Wow, Nighty! Thank you SO much, the site looks awesome!

Hmmm... how 'bout something like this:

THE PREVIEW

When Dean expressed interest in drawing STARSEARCHERS, he requested a short 5 or so page story. When I asked him what he wanted to draw, he said weird exotic locales and creatures. This was my challenge as a writer, so I came up with Overthink's little invention, which is a big deal because teleportation doesn't yet exist in the Starsearchers universe. This sequence will be worked into the series at some point. I think it turned out excellent and was particularly impressed by how Dean's mastery of coloring bypassed the need fot the pencils to need inks, as well as his usage of panels.

(feel free to edit these, Nighty!)

CHARACTER DESIGNS

The Starsearchers are one team of about a jillion characters I made up and drew stories of as a kid.

I was fortunate that my windows paint images of the Starsearchers piqued the interest of Dean Lee, whose artwork I have long admired on legionworld.net. That interest led Dean to want to draw a short story...

STARSEARCHERS # 1

It begins HERE! Dean has totally knocked himself OUT with this and I could NOT be prouder! I'm writing and Dean draws, colors and letters. Each issue will be 20 or so pages with additional yammerings by me and hot pinups by Dean. Enjoy the trip, why don't you?

I created a magnifying window for the books. Hopefully it works the way I intended and doesn't detract from the pages.

Looking forward to seeing the rest of issue #1.

Me too! Site looks great, Nighty, we are so proud of it! You're awesome!!!

Yes, thank you for giving it such a nice home!

Update.... we've done some beneficial design work and I've done rough layouts for the rest of the first issue. I just have to polish up the pencils and do the colors & letters. No actual posting date yet, but it is underway.

I think I'll practice for the upcoming new LSH issues by doing a CALLING THE ROLL of STARSEARCHERS, if that's okay...

...so let the roll be called!

OVERTHINK: Wow! I spent a couple of minutes looving over OT and the panoply of interesting-looking gadgetry he's wearing. I liked that he almost followed, and perhaps *will* follow, Seven's sarcastic suggestion to experimentation. That'd be a fun character trait that's a little different for a comic book super genius-- taking random suggestions and making them real.

The teleport gag was fun and allowed for a nice intro to a couple of the characters. I chuckled at the final teleport when it was Overthink's face peering into the crystal ball instead of a slimebat.

IRITT: I'm always drawn to the shrinkers or, in this case, I suspect?, the 'little people'. She intrigues me.

K'ZLE: Gets the funniest lines, right? Is he from a race of bog-people or is he a one-off?

SEVEN: No-nonsense tough gal with a sarcastic mouth. Somewhat familiar, so far. Is she the leader?

JOHNNY COMET: Seems the odd duck of the group. "One of these things is not like the others..." But that's the plan? He looks to promise high-adventure with humor and romantic hijinks.

KRYSALIS: A crystal weaver/spinner/maker bearing a lovely design (they all are, really). She's apparently the graceful, nice girl of the group. I want to know more...

The second part, set on the prison ship was a nicely done, spare, taut scene. I immediately want to know more about each of the prisoners and what they're 'in for'. As a FARSCAPE fan, I immediately caught a tremor of that show's vibe... if their ship were alive, it'd all be there.

I don't know if these are villains or shades of gray or something else entirely... and I like that. I don't know if the two groups I've just met are heroes and villains or victims and rescuers or escapees and capturers. Perhaps there'll be some 'blending'?

I do know it'll be fun finding out! Good job, guys!

YAY!! Todd, I know I can speak for both myself and Dean when I say we are honored by your Calling the Roll for STARSEARCHERS! Thank you so much for the detailed comments.

Now, to answer and discuss your queries/comments:

Doesn't Overthink look incredible?? His look is 100% credited to Dean Lee. I LOVE what Dean did with him.

One thing about Overthink-- there's NOTHING he can't invent... if he has time to do so. What's uncertain is if the sparse spare time he has is a curse or a blessing to the universe!

I'm tickled that the "Overthink's face gag" thing worked for you! Again I have to honor Dean Lee, who just KNOWS how to make a scene work without being beaten over the head with instruction. A rare talent.

Iritt is indeed one of the little people. But her kind is not like any other little people you have encountered before. One might think the butterfly-based race of an insectoid planet wouldn't last 2 generations, what with all those ferocious scary bugs out there. She gets a great scene later in issue 1 and I can't wait to see how Dean makes it look.

The K'zle you met in the preview-- actually the entire preview itself-- is set a bit in the future. He's got a way to go before he reaches the point he's at there. You will see. His gelatinous form is fairly standard on his home planet (as will be evidenced later in issue 1).

Seven (another round of applause to Dean for her stunning look) is not the leader but she is sort of a moral center for the group, and doesn't suffer Overthink's attitude very well at times. She's a lot more complicated than she at first seems in the Preview. Hang in there with her.

Johnny Comet is going to be a lot of fun to read. Your first impression of him is pretty accurate!

Krysalis (can we give Dean another standing "O" for her design?) is going to be in high contrast to her brother Rikk, which will really start to be noticeable in the opening pages of Issue 2. Her poised, polite nice girl manner I have to credit to Dean Lee who has mastered her body language. Way to go Dean!

I kinda forget that the readers don't really know what's up with any of these guys yet! But the next sequence of issue 1 is going to begin to make things clearer....

Thanks again, Todd!!!

Thank you for Calling the Roll, ML!

I've finished pencils on pages 6-10 and will begin scanning and coloring then lettering.

My new RL schedule has been pretty intense, but I feel like htis is the week when I'm starting to get used to it and am able to add fun stuff like comic art!

Stay tuned....

Posted by MLLASH on :

Whew! I was worried your new schedj was going to suck up all your time... I'm glad it has left you some room for this!

The script for issue 2 is just about done... in it, we begin to learn a lot about the charcaters and the universe they live in!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

My new schedj just about killled me for a couple of weeks there, but as of yesterday, I fell almost kinda normal again!

Hint--- action is gonna start brewing in this sequence!

Posted by MLLASH on :

Yay! I just got back from Drunk Duck, and we have some very nice comments/ratings there.

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Thanks for pointing that out. Yes, very nice.

I've returned to coloring over pencils instead of inking. I do clean up the linework a bit. It's funny, because I do prefer the energy in my pencil work more. Inks just tend to dull down my drawings. The consequence is, of course, that there can be some sketchy/rough work.

Anyway, LOTS of action on the way!

Posted by MLLASH on :

Dean I actually prefer your noninked work on Starsearchers! Yay, can't wait to see it!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Did a TON of coloring today, yet there's still rather a lot to do.

I just want to thank Lash again, for writing such a perfect series for me to play with! I love creating the visuals for all the settings, architecture, gear, vehicles, creatures and most of all.... the characters. I just wish I could get it all done sooner!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

End of night update...

Finished colors on page 6.
Did the flat colors on pages 7,8 & 9. Still need to go in and add tones, highlights, etc.

Scanned page 10, but haven't done any coloring on it. Lot's of stuff going on on that page!

Still need to do all the lettering and sound effects, which truly add a LOT to the story.

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Finished colors on 6,7,8 & 9. Still need to color 10, letter and sound fx. Really happy with this!

Posted by MLLASH on :

It looks sOooOOOoooo awesome.... poor I'xxi! You made me feel her pain-- and the panel of K'zle swinging the soldier guy is perfection.... thank you!

Updated the site. Lookin' good.

Can't wait to read more.

(Poor I'xxi [Frown] )

Thank you Gary!!

Dean, I'm inspired to write more action scenes just to see what creative use of panels you will use... L'AMOUR them...

Posted by Candle on :

Poor l'xxi is right.
sigh

I so loved the Neptune pages.
All the gloppy K'zle types in lots of different colors and sizes.

Maybe, after the Lord comes back and if I ever get to make a planet and a people, it'll be like this one.
I'll want a bug planet (Irrit, Lumen, Gates, Shikari types all) too, and one for a Krysalis people.
I'm kind of kidding but you guys have done such a great and awesome job!
Thanks!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Thank you for the great comments! I purposefully made I'xxi cute and charismatic, knowing what would happen to her. I'm glad the impact of the scene worked as intended. Good writing for a sad moment, Lash.

I think I'm going to go ahead and get page 11 done and posted before I start post at Drunk Duck and elsewhere. Now that I think about it, look at it, that page is a better pausing place.

LOVE working on this, and I can't wait to get more done!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Just posted page 11... a much more exciting pausing spot!

Even MORE action to come in the next sequence!!

Posted by MLLASH on :

CRAP ON A STICK, I'm now SO excited for the next sequence!!! Looks GREAT the way you set it up, Sketchy!

BTW, I'm putting the finishing touches on # 2's script this weekend and then will pronptly e-mail it to you!

It's gonna get FIERCE!! I'm glad you're a fan, Gary!!

Just read the last few pages guys...amazing!!
Lash your writing is fanastic...conveying perfectly the personalities of the characters and the situations they are in.
And Sketchy, your art is spot on, dynamic yet not over the top! Nice vibrant colours as well.

I'm a huge fan of this project guys, keep up the good work!

Posted by MLLASH on :

Dedman, thank you SO much... I'm thrilled that Dean could use your 3-D images-- which are truly incredible (I mean, Dr. Battle looks freakin' ALIVE in that closeup!!) within the story!

I could write a sequence especially for a set of those images....

That would be pretty cool, though I'd have to know WELL in advance what you wanted to do...I strive for near photorealism with my 3D work, the textures take a long time to do as a result of that.
As long as the sequence is relatively short I'm sure we could work something out...PM me!

Posted by MLLASH on :

You have been PMed!

meanwhile, I finshed and e-mailed Dean the script for issue 2, and await his approval.

Posted by MLLASH on :

Well, a bout of insomnia coupled with my continually rolling around the opening scene of issue 3 in my head has resulted in my going ahead and writing said scene. It intros Omarr's assassins. It's quite the massacre.

I may go ahead and plow forward on issue 3 now.

Thank-you, gentlemen.

I interpreted the intensity of the Starsearchers to be based on the fact that they are striving to come out from under the oppression of an evil emperor and his army. They're at war, so they fight as soldiers do. Vamp is a... vampire, so I definitely wanted to show the scary side of what that means. A touch of sci-fi gore comes with that territory.

I appreciate your comments very much. This is a really fun project to work on. I wish I had more time to devote to it.

Lash, I'm proud of YOU and your magnificent work. You are juggling a LOT within this series and it's going GREAT! I wish I had more time to put into it, but I'm still pretty happy with the overall product even though I could critique my work to pieces.

The final sequence of issue #1 will take more time because a LOT is going on. I think I mentioned that I already thumbnailed out all the pages of #2.

Stay tuned!

Posted by MLLASH on :

Guess what? I just 2 seconds ago finished the script for # 3. It is TOTALLY SLAMMIN' I think. With this issue, I feel like I have gotten my flow down really well with this series.

I'm going to proofread it now. Let me know when you are ready for it, I don't want to hit you with too much stuff at once (although I can't WAIT for you to read the script!!!)

Posted by Nightcrawler on :

Updated the site. Bluu's my favorite charcter for superficial reasons. And that page was pretty shocking.

Like Shady, I have to remember that these characters are not the Legion or traditional super-heroes.

Posted by MLLASH on :

Going to check the site next! It's the closest thing to STARSEARCHERS in a real comic book format. Thanks Nighty!

No, the STARSEARCHERS (though certainly inspired by the LSH!) are not like them in many important ways.

You will meet Omarr Shalb in issue 2 and begin to see why they have to be tough-- and by issue 3 you will be rooting for them to get even TOUGHER!

Posted by Nightcrawler on :

The page sizes are a bit too large all at once.

I'll have to work on that.

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Again, thank you SO much for housing the comic! It just feels .... real... there.

I can't wait til it's totally done, and I can read it "cover" to "cover."

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Completed all the pencils for the rest of #1!

Now to scan, clean up, then color and letter.

Posted by MLLASH on :

Wow... STARSEARCHERS # 1.... almost done! VERY excited.

Maybe soon there will be an Overthink action figure!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Just did all the background flats. (It's the easiest part, though vital.) Next come the character/prop flats. Then shading. Then highlights, then special effects. Then lettering.

It'll be a bit before it's all done, but I plan on working on it for a while today.

Posted by Candle on :

K'zle should come first, imo!

Gosh, Dean, that all sounds so complicated and hard!
Wow!

Posted by MLLASH on :

Hear that, Hasbro? We are guaranteed one sale of a K'zle action figure in Oregon!

Seriously though, Shady you are so right... Dean is doing a COLOSSAL amount of work on Starsearchers... drawing, coloring, lettering... the work of multiple people.

I am VERY lucky he's into this project...

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

I LOVE working on this project!

I had a few days off there, but am now back at it. Neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeearrrrly done with the coloring!

Honestly, I'm getting a *wee* bit tired of coloring Rexallian soldiers.

Ulp! Don't mean to give anything away!

Posted by MLLASH on :

Heh! Fortunately, there's lots less soldiers in 2 and 3...!

Glad to see you back, Sketchy!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Finally got the last pages of #1 posted! It was a LOT of detail, but so much fun. Thanks everyone, for waiting!

I still intend to do an inside back cover and a back cover, so that's coming soon. I'll update CBR and Drunk Duck when I get that done.

I have thumbnailed all of issue #2 also, but I do need a little break now.

PLEASE let me (and Lash) know what you think!

Thank you!

Posted by Candle on :

First, greatest impression?

On the top of the final page, how did you get those tiny little figures to all look so different?!
gads
I'm so impressed!

The rest of it was great, too.
This was a wonderful way to introduce your 'stars' and I thank you and LLASH for all of your work!

It's a fun read and beautiful to look at.
sigh

Posted by MLLASH on :

WOW.

I mean, what can I say about this? To say it's the one thing I am proudest of in my life right now sounds a little nuts, but call me a little nuts.

My favorite background scene: Hoppa kicking Rexallian nass! Rikk looks awesome.

"Come with US if you want to live!" Heh! Unnamed is wacky!

Dean I couldn't have asked for a better artist. I feel really lucky.

Posted by Nightcrawler on :

Great stuff!

Unfortunately, like all good stuff...I just want more.

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Thanks for the comments, and thanks, Nighty, for the website update.

As I mentioned, #2 is all plotted out visually, based on Lash's script. I'll do my best to keep it coming gradually without TOO much time between updates.

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Hey! Just added a bit more fun content to the first issue. An inside back cover and a back cover. Really, on the web, we don't need *covers* but it was fun to show Jayke's design sketches and Lash's various "reports" are extremely entertaining. Very LSH V4!

Posted by Nightcrawler on :

I finally worked out a zooming feature that works in I.E., Firefox and Safari.

I'll need to add a warning about the images loading.

The latest pages added to the book. can't wait for me. Keep up the great work guys!

#2 update....

Cover & inside cover are done! Page 1 & page 2 are nearly colored! Lettering needed! I'll post when that much is ready! Exclamation point!

# 2: The gang's all together but tensions are going to run high. I've only seen Dean's art for the first 2 pages but I think it's looking even more incredible than ever! We will begin to learn more about the Starsearchers here, and in some cases maybe wish we hadn't! And how about that poppin' cover by DEDMAN, huh? WOW!

I have to say that the colors are pretty magnificent, so deep and rich!

You guys should be proud of your work.

Dean's coloring skills continue to amaze me. I love the reds on the ship, Overthink's powder-blue accents, Rikk's outfit's accents, EVERYthing!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Too kind!

I did some penciling for the next sequence. Gonna do some colors, letters. You know the drill...

Posted page 3 of issue 2. Just a one page update this time.

Posted by MLLASH on :

But What a page! Love the shot of the little aliens... How perfect is that? IIRC, the script says, "shot of li'l aliens-- looking downtrodden". Wow. Dean rules.

Guys, I'm lovin' it SO MUCH!!
The colors are knocking me offa my chair!!

YAY, rhino's reading! Thank you, and I KNOW, right? Dean's coloring = pure love!

Page 4: I love Rikk!!!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

yes, yay for rhino! I appreciate the love for the colors.

SPOILER --------- not all of the scenes on the ship take place on the bridge, so not all scenes on the ship will have red lighting!

Just added page 5!

Posted by MLLASH on :

Yipes! At this rate, I better go ahead and write issue 4! (yay!!)

Dean, loving it. Drey and Ronar look great!

Posted by Mattropolis on :

I am gonna have to check this out over the weekend...

Update...
I've pencilled several more pages of issue 2, and have begun colors on page 6. I won't be posting again until pages 6 & 7 are both done, which might be next week.

Mattropolis, I'm very pleased to know you're with us. I (we) would love to hear your thoughts!

Posted by MLLASH on :

Yes, please let us know what you think, Matt!

Posted by dedman on :

I'm a bit behind on the series right now, work and other IRL stuff has me falling behind.
BTW, I'm still working on the Dr. Battle renders, I just haven't had much time lately. I'll post to the fanart thread whenever I get 'em done

Posted by Candle on :

I really enjoy the varied panel perspecivies, horizen lines, group/individuals and far away/close-up shots!
That kind of work makes everything so much fun!

You amaze me with the detail that makes everyone recognizable even from far away, above and at the back of!

The story makes so much sense, too!
And I've loved Ronal from your early postings, LASH.
Now, in 2 panels, you've made me adore Drey, too!

I hope Dr. Battle can help K'zle's friend.
Lovely stuff!
[Hug]

Posted by MLLASH on :

Ded, can't wait to see 'em. Let us know what you think when you get caught up please!

Shady, [Love] to you!

I can't praise Dean enough!

Drey is very charismatic AND noble... this will wear thin on some of the Starsearchers quite quickly!

Dr. Battle and Z'vle appear again at the end of the issue in what I feel will be a very powerful scene.

remember: "We will begin to learn more about the Starsearchers here, and in some cases maybe wish we hadn't".

Script for # 4: BEGUN!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

spoilers!

I've become frustrated with the 2 pages that feature the emporer. I've re-drawn the pages and am still unhappy. I'm too tired tonight to work on it but I plan on trying tomorrow.

Posted by MLLASH on :

Oh no! I am sorry to hear this-- Can I help in any way??? If it's the script, we can revise! Email or PM me!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

No no no! It's not the script! I'm just being a fussy pants artist.

Sorry to come across negatively.

I've actually reworked the scene and am now ready to scan and color!

Posted by MLLASH on :

You never come off negatively. Glad you are happy with the reworked scene!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

I can't stand it! I gotta spill....

SPOILERS!!!

I'm now coloring the emperor's 2 page scene ---
a full page splash and a....
9 panel grid!!!!!!

Stay tuned!

Posted by MLLASH on :

WICKED!!!!

Posted by MLLASH on :

ohmigosh.... LOVE PAGE 6! Decadent! Lavish!

Love the little pet thing... it adds so much to the scene... WICKED, indeed!!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

I gave the pet the sound effect, "schooch" so maybe that'll end up being its name?

Added page 7!

Posted by MLLASH on :

Page 7: KICK ASS.

There should be no doubt who is the REAL bad guy here now... right?

This issue is FAR from over. *evil chuckle!!*

DEAN LEE, you ROCK SO HEARTY!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Heh! Thanks, Lash.

As I've mentioned, I have the whole rest of the issue thumbnailed. Get this, my frustration with pages 6 & 7 had to do with the fact that my supposedly fully pencilled pages didn't tell the story as well as my little tiny roughs! So, when I re-worked them, it got better. Whew!

Posted by MLLASH on :

I **love** your brave choice of lavish splash-followed by 9-panel grid!!

Posted by MLLASH on :

For anyone curious:

Dean and I have fallen into a pretty laid-back script-to-art formula;

Basically, I use "page numbers" to help me know how long a script should be, and I make suggestions as to how long a scene might/should be, but Dean ALWAYS has last call on the visuals: his choices have been IMPECCABLE (I just know I misspelled that!! --Teeds?)

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Too kind, Lash! I do appreciate the flexibility with the layouts.

As always, I have reiterate that I would not be able to create a series like this on my own, and certainly not script it so well. It's the *perfect* project for me when I need that escape from reality time.

SPOILERS!

I've finished pencils on the next 4 pages and have begun colors. We're gonna get REAL sci-fi now!

OOPSY! I commented on page 6 in the wrong thread!
Please forgive me.

Wasn't able to get onto the computer over the last couple of days, but I did go ahead and complete all of the pencils for issue 2!!! I'm quite happy with them, and can't wait to color them and bring 'em to life!

Posted by MLLASH on :

ALL pencils? Yipes! Better get on with # 4!

And can't wait to see 'em! AND # 3, which is gonna be FIERCE!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

I can't wait! I'll post page 8 now, and then post 9,10 & 11 together, when they're done.

Yes-- thanks, Dev!

I finished colors on page 11, but not 9 or 10 yet. So, I'll get to that soon. Also, I've thumbnailed all of issue 3! Can't wait to start full pencils. Well, it'll be a while....

My son and I are looking over the assassin character designs.

I'm caught up...AND I WANT MORE!!!!!!!!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

You get your wish, Dev! We're now up to page 11!

I'll wait a couple of days until I post those pages at drunkduck.com

We got 550 views there on Monday and 100 more yesterday! That sounds like a lot to me!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

It's a lovely day, so I don't want to sit at my desk on the computer, so instead of coloring the next sequence(s) of #2, I've penciled a few pages of #3. I can sit by the window, in the daylight to do that.

Jayke has given me some very cool designs for the assassins, so I'm looking forward to "animating" them in the series.

Next update will probably happen early next week.

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Gonna do a bunch of scanning and coloring today!

Opening sequence of # 4 done!

Dean, just gave the latest pages the careful lookover they desrved... AMAZED by the 3-D effect you're working there...

Thank you Lash. This is a good time for me to mention that I'm still very happy working on this project and I want to do it forever. I know that my art is very.... Sketch Lad-ish.... but I accept that and am willing to continue working at that level as long as someone... anyone... is interested.

Can't wait to read #4, especially that sugary scene you just gushed about!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

I like gross, too!

Posted by MLLASH on :

IMO, your art is perfect for STARSEARCHERS!

re: the sweet scene, it's SO not what you are expecting, I bet! But pretty sweet for STARSEARCHERS and especially one of the characters involved...

Pg 12-- The new kids begin to mingle with the S'Searchers, yay! It's just going to get nuttier from here... can't wait to see the final sequence of # 2!!!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

If I may say so, the pencils meet the needs of the script for that sequence. I can't wait to get to coloring it!

Your chit-chat is so cute!

Page 12 is gorgeous and I'm going to keep it forever.
Bugs, bugs, bugs!

And the winged snake girl.
The first time Sketch showed her was amazingly chilling.
I can hardly wait to see what he does with her!

I love Iriit and K'zle (even when he doesn't have any lines!)

Glad you're enjoying Mharva. I'm now looking forward to #4 to see what Lash has planned for her.

Thanks!

Gotta admit, I really enjoyed working on page 13...

Posted by MLLASH on :

IIRC, page 13 has more S'Searchers/'Li'l Aliens' mingling...

Dean, Issue 4 is shaping up to be heavy on the 'Li'l Aliens'... you may also want to think about visuals for a couple of planets' surfaces (I'm going to e-mail some info to you tomorrow)...

The next update will be 2 pages (IIRC).

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

I did not recall correctly. It was actually a 3 page update! [Smile]

Posted by MLLASH on :

And WHAT a 3 pages! Love the choice for white/light backround on pgs 14/15, because it makes the characters pop and some of these guys have had less 'screentime' so far.

I do think I've done OK juggling the huge cast and am glad I started things where I did and got the team all together in 1 issue (except for those 'insiders' Gorgonna mentions).

EXCELLENT work on the 10-panel grid on pg 16.

I can't believe this issue is almost over, and I look forward to what I feel will be a powerful ending scene...! Dean rules!!

OK. I have finished reading Starsearchers!

First, the art. Simply amazing, the pencils, the panel layout, the colors! Just WOW! Each character looks distinct and unique! Bravo!

The characters. In an ensemble piece like this, certain characters about bound to stick out to diffierent people. I currently love Bluu, Iriit, the Unnamed and Vamp. The newcomers are also intereting but I will reserve judgement until we see more of them, The only one I personnally don't like is Seven, just because of her character type (Big Strong Warrior Woman)but that doesn't mean I won't fall in love with her eventually. Lash, huge KUDOS on an amazing cast that I cannot wait to see more of.

The writing. LOVE IT. The character bits combined with the space opera epic story remind me of two of my favorite writers (Levitz and moreso Englehart). I find myself comparing the writing style to Englehart more than Levitz, but since both are my favorites, you can do no wrong either way.

For one reason or another, the one scene that chilled me to the bone was when the Unnamed freed the prisoners. His line there totally creeped me out, reminding me of a cross between Obsidian and the Child Catcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

I cannot wait to read more!

Posted by MLLASH on :

YAY MATT's onboard!!! I'm thrilled you enjoyed it so far.

I echo every ounce of praise you give to Dean. I love that boy (his art too)!! [Big Grin]

I can only blush with pride at your kind words about the script. That means so much coming from another whose stories I have enjoyed here. Thank you.

Hang in there with Seven. There's more to her than we've seen so far. There's quite a story behind how she came into possession of the Jewel of Siffra that gives her her powers.

Yeah, Unnamed is a bit unhinged. It ain't gonna be pretty when he meets up with Venoma (the other survivor of his home planetoid that you will meet in issue 3), who is one of Omarr's top assassins.

Thank you for reading and commenting, Matt!!

Posted by Candle on :

I especially loved page 15's layout!
Sketch is really varying the look of the pages and I love it.

Great inclusion of Rexall and Omarr.
I just can't stand him or that culture!

Poor K'zle.

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Thank you Matt and Candle, for the supportive comments!

Lash, I'm SOOO close to coloring the final sequence of issue #2. I'm also quite pleased with page 17, which features the lil rebels in Click Here For A Spoilercivilian attire!

Hang in there!

Posted by MLLASH on :

OMG, YAY, new pages!!!! MUST GO READ!!!

Also, FYI... 15 pages of # 4 are done... the final sequence is going to be quite violent so I thought I would take a brief break before I tackled that.

Glad I did...! Off to read...

WoWwwww... PuuuuuuuRDY!!!! LOVE Hoppa's new look! Awesome! I notice a new plan with Temp's look, thanks for providing the explanatory dialogue there!! And again, the colors SNAP, CRACKLE and POP!

Issue 2 is SO almost done!!

Dean, I gotsta axe... is Starsearchers the longest sequentials you've done as an adult artist?

Posted by MLLASH on :

Annnnd # 4 script is DONE. First a proofreading then an e-mailing.

Posted by MLLASH on :

Dean, when this issue is complete I will plug again on FACEBOOK... do you know any other places/sites I can attempt to spread the STARSEARCHERS word?

Also, how do you get the stats from DRUNK DUCK that you have posted previously? I'd be interested to see. I can tell from the comments there we have a few followers, but not everyone comments...

Posted by Mattropolis on :

I think page 17 is my favorite so far!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Glad the pages please.

I've begun colors on that last scene, and I've done actually a LOT of pencils for #3.

Lash, I'm glad you're good with Temp's verbiage regarding his uni. Honestly, a color change maybe could happen, but the design is as is.

As far as sequential pages, yes, this has become my largest body of work in that regard. I love it!

Okay. Random thoughts from the notes I took:

It reminds me of a lot of favorite sci-fi comics and TV shows and movies, especially Dreadstar, but it's got its own unique identity.

Lash, you have an Engelhart-ian flair for writing strong female characters.

Dean, excellent art all around; your eye for color is exquisite.

Overthink is a classic archetype in the same mold as the Dox family line.

I like the way that the cutest characters -- Iritt, K'zle -- are also the toughest.

Iritt has what I thought was the funniest line, "I was more a royal pain."

Love Johnny Comet's Gim-esque headgear.

More Vamp, please. Much more.

More Goddess Starlette, too.

Love when Bluu insists everybody be well-dressed.

I have 2 big crushes: Drey Danger (please don't ever cut off his beautiful long locks), and Ronar Shalb (bless his noble redemption-seeking soul.)

Plenty of LOL moments, especially Iritt's aforementioned line, and of course...slimebat poo!

At the same time, you can shift the tone very smoothly, like Alan Grant did on L.E.G.I.O.N. The fate of K'zle's friend brought a tear to my eye.

The secondary villains are memorable, especially Commander Esmerelda.

Which brings me to my one criticism -- Omarr is a bit buffoonish for someone's who's supposed to be the series' Big Bad. Even his most vicious moment is played for laughs. Of course, it's all too easy to go too far the other way, but I'm sure you guys will get the balance right.

Eagerly awaiting issue #3.

Stealthie (I'm just not ready to stop calling you that yet, give me time) THANK YOU for the detailed notes! You've made my morning as I work on the script for issue 6.

I'll touch on some things in order--

I'll cop to Overthink being this team's Dox. And he's a helluvva hoot to write! Wait 'til you see what he does in # 3!!

Vamp-- there's a major reveal (done in 1 panel) about her coming in issue 4, then she kicks some serious space-ass in issue 5. She WILL be getting a spotlight.

Starlette-- More coming!

You like Drey and Ronar? Wait 'til you see them square off against Omarr's assassins... those crushes are well-deserved. [Smile] Issues 4-5!

Hmmm... Renee Esmerelda is actually a Starsearchers plant, which will be clearer in coming issues...

Now, your criticism re: Omarr actually brought a BIG SMILE to my face. Why? Well, I've told Dean to make Omarr's scenes (verbatim, iirc): "totally over the top".
*JUST BEFORE* reading your post, I was writing a scene in # 6 that will I hope make Omarr's general ridiculousness/ridonkulousness make more sense... there's an old cliche about "behind every great man stands a great..." something, I went blank... [Smile] #6 makes it quite clear who the TRUE power is!

I totally appreciate you taking the time to read Starsearchers and make these comments! [Hug]

Aha. Very sly. I do recall a hint or two being dropped about that, now.

Lash, I'm curious -- other than the various incarnations of the Legion, are there other direct influences on your Starsearchers stories? I mentioned before that I perceived some similarities to Dreadstar. Did you ever read that? If you haven't, I think you'd like it.

Posted by MLLASH on :

Non Legion-proper influences would be L.E.G.I.O.N., Omega Men, Guardians of the Galaxy, Star Hunters and Josie and the Pussycats in Outer Space.

I never read DREADSTAR, but I DID read the DREADSTAR thread and have wanted to read it ever since! [Smile]

Aww, bless your heart, Lash. [Smile]

I think Dynamite is beginning a series of trade reprints of the Dreadstar saga.

L.E.G.I.O.N., of course, is a favorite of mine.

I've only read the first 12 issues of Omega Men. The opening 6-part arc was a classic, but after that it seemed to meander. Someday, if I find reasonably priced back issues, I'll check out the New Direction (starts with #26, right?)

Loved Steve Gerber's Guardians of the Galaxy, plus their Gerber-written appearances in Marvel-Two-In-One and the Defenders.

And I remember Josie and the Pussycats in Outer Space! What fun that was!

I've seen so many cartoons (Ecuadorian TV in the 80s had a lot of airtime to fill) that I even remember Partridge Family 5700 A.D. or whatever it was called!

Posted by MLLASH on :

re: OMEGA MEN... yeah, it did get meandery there after # 6. 1-6 is classic though. I *did* enjoy around issue 15 or so, where Primus attempts to destroy the force-field surrounding Euphorix so he can get back to Kalista... I very much enjoyed the Primus/Kalista soap opera/love story...

The new direction does begin with 26, but the previous issue (Shawn McManus' first art job) starring Kalista on Euphorix is a MUST GET. SO be sure to start there, it's a beautiful, sad standalone story.

The STARSEARCHERS # 6 script is quite intense... I'm proceeding slowly and catiously, but surely on it.

#25 it is. Thanks, Lash.

Thanks for your comments and compliments, Fanfic Lass!

I'm slowly working on the content for #3. I wish there were more waking hours in the day(s)!

My pleasure, Sketchy. [Smile]

The cover to #3 is simply amazing. So many characters and yet, it doesn't feel crowded at all!

Posted by Fanfic Lass on :

I can tell, even at tiny size, that the cover is a thing of beauty.

Will get the full goodness on my next visit to the library.

Posted by MLLASH on :

GROUP SHOT! Dean I can't believe you (attempted to and SUCCEEDED SO BEAUTIFULLY to) fit all 19 of the primary Starsearchers on there!! LOVE it, thank you!!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Thanks for the comments! It did take a while to get this done, even with skipping the inking phaze. I pondered whether or not to include Renee E., but I obviously chose to wait until I see what happens with her to include her in a Starsearchers group shot.

I'll now begin coloring/lettering story pages for #3, which I'm very excited about. I've looked over my pencils for WEEKS now.

Oh, also, I've thumbnailed all of #s 4 & 5 as well. So many thrills to come!

Oh, also, I haven't forgotten the surprise I mentioned before.

Posted by MLLASH on :

Awesome news!! Lots of weirdness, action and fun coming in 3, 4 and 5!!

Script for # 6 is particularly dense and am proceeding at a slOOOwer pace. 6 pages written but it will be a while before this one is done.

Take your time! You're WAY ahead of me.

Just read through the entire issue #2.

You guys are doing great. I'm slowly getting a feel for all the characters, and some very distinct personalities are becomiong apparent. Good characterization, great story and superb art.

I love the cover for issue 3.

Thank you for reading and commenting, Dev!

You guys are so supportive... I'd be writing this as long as Dean wants to draw it but it sure is nice getting the feedback from fellow Legion Worlders!

Wrote pages 7-8. Whew. THERE is SO MUCH happening in # 6. Dean is going to KILL me when he gets this script...

#3 update...
Finished the front inside cover.
Finished colors on page 1. I've scanned up to page 3 and am continuing to scan, looking for sneak peek content to show you guys. Touched up a few panels/pages throughout the issue.

#4 update...
Couldn't resist! I began penciling and got to page 10.

#5 update... well, as already mentioned, it's been thumbnailed .... spoiler.... there are LOTS of 2-3 panel pages....! That's a GOOD thing!

Well, even though I have a TON of coloring to do for issue #3, I still went on ahead and FINISHED PENCILS FOR #4!

See, I can draw with pencil and paper anywhere, like on the couch or in bed. But I have to color on the computer, which is downstairs in the TV room (no windows!).

Anyway, LOTS of fun Starsearchers stuff to come!!!!

I am now starting page 11. Though I am finding this issue the hardest so far to write, it is also the most enjoyable so far. Weird.

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

I've completed colors on pages 1-4 of issue 3. I need to finish up to page 6 in order to post.

I have a hurt foot right now, so I can't do much. (I'm missing school today!) Maybe I'll get a lot done.

Heh! I'm always curious what you think of the differences between your actual scripting and my final presentation. I try not to change things TOO much, but I do a little.

Posted by MLLASH on :

FLOORED BY IT'S RIDONKULOUS AWESOMENESS, I am.

The one change I noticed involved the splash page scene (which was originally broken into panels) but as I always say, you know what works visually. I LOVE IT. The scene was everything I was shooting for and the Assassins are 500% badass. I particularly love Venoma's head/hair and Pede looks savage. Perfect.

Colors are stunning,as always and I **LOVE** the panels included with the PREVIOUSLY section.

I'm WICKED PROUD of us!!!!

Hah! Lash, you make it very gratifying to work on such a project, with your very energetic positive responses! Please let me return the compliment by letting you know publicly, that I am in love with ALL of these characters. I love the way the story's going. I love all the interesting locations. Thank you.

Starsearchers Fan Site is updated.

Posted by MLLASH on :

FFLass, I'm looking forward to your comments!

Thank you, Nighty! The book looks so cool in that comic-like format!

Oh and my summary/comments for issue 3:

"ASSASSINS"... Things can come apart just as quickly as they are put together as we find out the Rexallian Empire is not the only deadly danger facing our crew. What to do when the danger comes not only from outside forces but from your allies as well?

Posted by Candle on :

Wow!
Those Assassins ARE creepy!

I'll have to read this new material a few times to get the living characters straight, but the vampire (one for this team, too), the gal with the red tatoos and the teleporter in the giant red cowel really stand out!

I LOVE the group shot cover!
K'zle is SO big!
[Smile]

The winged reptile girl looks very different, doesn't she?
She's pretty now and before she was amazingly scary with her hsssssss and things.
Does she have retractable armour like Shikari, only like, ugly?

So much work.
You're both just too great!
Thanks!

Posted by MLLASH on :

Thank YOU, Shady. Yeah, Dean outdid himself on these designs.

Red tatoos is Killda. Wicked-awesome design for her. Love it.

Giant red cowl is Witchery, who does come from planet NEKRONA, like the Starsearcher Vamp. Lots of horror-movie-type stuff on that world (hence the witches and the 'walking undead' we see in # 3).

The vampirey looking Assassin, however, is Shadowshade. She's not a vampire but does look WAY vampy, yum!

re: The cover, I'd been bugging Dean for a group-shot cover; I figured 6-7 characters or somesuch. Instead we got ALL 19 STARSEARCHERS... I was floored. Dean is LOVE.

I think winged-reptile Mharva is looking different now because she finally has some clothes on. No retractable armour, although there is a surprise about her coming. She's still amazingly scary, which will be all-too evident when... well, stay tuned. [Smile]

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Hey you guys, thank you so much for the comments. It means a lot to me, when I work on this stuff and get ANY kind of response. Of course nice words are my favoritest. [Smile]

Nighty, I can't thank you enough for the site. Just awesome.

Candleplay in Shadowlight,
You kinda worried me when you said Mharva looked pretty instead of scary. I thought I'd forgotten how to draw her or something. But I think Lash called it-- her brighter clothing seems to lighten her look overall. As he said, you'll be seeing her again....

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Oh, notice how Killda's facial tats all seem to frame an oval on her forehead? What could THAT mean?

MwAH hahahahahahahaha!

'Kay, gettin' sleepy....

Posted by Candle on :

Well, is this Mharva from issue #1:
 -
I thought that she was who LASH identified her as.
Is it Hoppa in a very bad mood, instead?
Anyway, this is what she looks like on your cover:

I wasn't sure at first, but now I *AM* sure... you read what I wrote on my Windows Paint thread about a certain obsession of Killda's and worked it into her design ingeniously. DEAN IS LOVE!!!

This is WONDERUFL! (I'm so far behind on all things Bits, I just read issue #3 so far). What a nasty bunch of villains, they're absolutely spine-tickling. They'd certainly give me nightmares. Really good diversity of appearance, power and character.

Posted by Candle on :

Thanks, Dean.

This sounds bad, but I didn't actually SEE Mharva's upper body until just now when you named her.
Her brownish body just blended into the background for me.
(I DID wonder what the purple thing was, though.)
I thought Vamp had Mharva's wings but they must be a vampiric type of transformation.

Thanks for being patient and, literally, clearing that up for me.

I knew my eyes didn't see clearly anymore, but that was pretty bad.
Sorry for the mix-up.
sigh

Lash, Dean, great news!

I decided to give my computer one last try at loading Starsearchers, and this time it worked!

I just finished reading the first 7 pages of #3. I love them. The Assassins remind me of the 20th Century LSV from L.E.G.I.O.N.

Intense opener, guys, and I look forward to seeing where it goes from here.

Posted by MLLASH on :

Cramey, thanks for reading and commenting. Issue 1 & 2 introduces the cast, slaps 'em all together and tells a bit of backstory on the Starseachers' universe. Check 'em out when you have a chance.

Dean, those stats seem pretty good, right? No new comments there yet but I am sure there will be some.

FFLass, Horray! Glad it worked this time. THANK you for the high compliment about the L.E.G.I.O.N. LSV, those guys were reaLLy scary!

Seems like the opening for # 3 was everything I intended.

Shady, with 12 years in the ophthalmology field, I hate nothing more than visual problems! Please have your vision checked, I am very concerned about your eyesight!

***JUST finished the script for # 6. I'm going to give it one final re-read before I mail to Dean. I always look forward to reading what he has to say; his suggestion awhile back saved me from including a scene I wasn't really happy with and working that scene into issue 6 in a MUCH better way! [Smile]

1 page update (#3,page 8)!

Hope this will do until the next page(s) get colored/lettered!

I'm glad you like it, Lash. I'm really looking forward to presenting page 9. I think the emphasis I went with will be mildly surprising to you - in a delightful way.

For everyone else, thanks for your patience as these pages come along. A LOT of exciting stuff is in store. Lash is WAY ahead of me, so I might have to augment my story pages with other eye-candy!

Pace yourself so it's fun.
And maybe you can find time to play on some of the other threads, too.

Didya notice Seven and Iritt leaving with Krys and K'zle? That's an example of the many ways Dean saves my ass. The scene wouldn't have worked with them still in the room. >>whew!<< Thanks, Dean. I'm glad you realized it, 'cause I didn't until I read the page.

It's nice to see some on-screen bonding with the little rebels!

Damn, there's enough untold tales of the STARSEARCHERS to take up a whole other book. *runs away!!*

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Well, it was written for Drey to encourage Ronar, but I felt like we were due for a group hug and a couple of smiles. I thought it was okay because none of them really knew Z'vle and K'zle was out of the room.

Wouldn't it be cool to have a friend like Drey?

Lash, I can't over-state how much I enjoy/approve of your scripts. Really good!

I have lots of pages penciled, it's now a matter of me finding the time to scan, color and letter them.

Hope everyone's good with pauses between updates, but they ARE coming.

Oh, BTW, one of my Facebook friends (Christian Zamora of COMICS ALL TOO REAL) is reading (on Drunk Duck) and has offered to link us on his blog and website. COOLNESS.

Also, there may be a thing going with T-Shirts. If and when I get this going, do you mind if some of your STARSEARCHERS art is possibly used... you would get a 50% cut, of course, if/when any might be sold.

Don't try to make me empathize with Battle!
She should have, at the very least, found out if there was a way to obtain what was needed to save the blue jelly kid!
Overthink has shown us that he has an instantanious form of transport.

She has no true excuse.

She didn't have to splatter him, either.

Love page 11.
The change up between 10 and 11, color and mood wise, is very effective and interesting!

I'd like a bootneck black T, please.

And I love Renee's hair!

There's no rush, Dean, but I'll sure be happy when the next page is ready.

Wow... I'm humbled by that statement FFL... thank you so much, that means so very much to me!

Loads of stuff is coming...

The rest of issue 3 will deal with a previously unseen menace and a twist with the Assassins.

Issue 4-5 take a look at Seksha-- home to Iritt and Hoppa, and features a knockdown dragout with the Assassins. Longest battle sequence ever! [Wink]

In issue 6... stuff hits the fan. LOTS of stuff.

Thank you NIghty!!

FFLass... One of these days I will have to read DREADSTAR. I'm just hoping Dean will survive the ridonkulousness that is issue 6 first.

And I hope you guys enjoy the rest of issue 3... you're not gonna beLIEVE what Overthink does to-- *shuts mouth*

Shady, Overthink and Johnny Comet are probably my favorite to write... but Mharva jumped way up the list, probably to 3rd favorite. I like them all really, even Dr. Battle. She's got a wicked li'l scene coming up in issue 5--

Thanks for reading, ya'll!! [Smile]

It's a huge cast... I am trying to make sure everyone has a moment here and there, a moment that makes the reader not forget who they are, even if they don't appear every issue.

And when issue 3 is done, Facebook is going to get hit HARD... Christian at Comics All too Real is going to post it and with Nighty's kind permission I am going to post it at Legion World.

Sounds exciting! I fixed page 11. Imageshack is terribly unreliable. I gotta figure something out....

I hope to work on more pages real soon. I'm looking forward to completing issue 3 and moving on to 4.

OMG!!!!!!!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

On page 15, we get a sneak, unclear, vague peek at the Lloachern.

At one point, Lash and I had discussed the concept of comics that include the "talking heads" style of storytelling. Well, page 17 is the ultimate -- 15 panels -- of talking heads. Hey fanboy, I think it works!

It's been SO fun getting back into coloring Starsearchers pages! I've had the pencilled art ready for a long time.

Puh-LEEZ let me (and MLLASH) know what ya'll think!

Posted by MLLASH on :

I *LOVE* the 15-panel grid... it SO works for that scene!!!

I'm curious as to how this little stunt with Temp will affect opinions of Overthink.

Looks GREAT Dean, as always!!!

Posted by Fanfic Lass on :

This is wonderful.

And the 15-panel experiment worked beautifully.

In answer to your query, Lash, it hasn't negatively affected my opinion of Overthink. It's just the sort of thing I'd expect him (and, for that matter, some though not all of the Doxes) to do.

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

I figure Overthink is very objective about things. I mean, he checked with Dr. Battle about K'vle's death in a fact finding way. Then, he sent Temp out after the Lloachern with a clear strategy. Does that make him cold? Maybe, but he doesn't appear to be full of malice.

Glad the 15 talking heads page was cool. Don't have plans to use that method again. There are lots of cool visual still to come!

So many fun toy ideas....

I'm working on the final pages of issue 3. Don't think they'll be done tonight, but really soon.

Ah! Our first hint as to what makes Renee' 'special'!

The Omarr/Renee exchange has been drawn beautifully, Dean!

SO CLOSE to the end of this issue!

HEE! LOVE IT! I hope people catch on that Witchery's teleportation can make them pop in and out like that. If they don't get it yet, they will when a big deal is made of her teleport spell soon! You make them all look SOOOO deliciously evil, I love it!

Love the behind the scenes designwork!

I'm going to link on Facebook to Drunk Duck!

And, DAMN. I really like putting Renee through the wringer, huh?

Posted by Candle on :

Very fun.
It's interesting that Temp can't project heat with his hands or eyes, just his whole body.

Overthink is a great name.
He seems to be himself, to me, and not a spinoff of Vril or something.

Renee is in trouble!

Posted by Nightcrawler on :

Updated site. Great job!

Posted by MLLASH on :

Shady, thank you SO much for reading!

Yeah, the Rexallian-designed suit Temp is in keeps his body heat WAY WAY down. A Mercurian youngster like him can't regulate his body heat like an older one can (i.e. Infernal of Omarr's assassins). There's a story behind why Temp ended up on the Undesirable that I hope Dean and I can get to one day. (Actually, there's a story behind how ALL of them ended up there, but that's a whole 9 issue miniseries...)

I admit I love Overthink. Also must admit that Vril is definitely my current inspiration for writing him, but I do hope he stands as a character on his own and am glad you see that he does. I also think Dean's design for him is positively inspired.

Yeah, poor Renee... she does SO MUCH for the Starsearchers... her contributions to the rebel cause are not lost on Overthink. There's SO MUCH backstory on these guys I let go of so that we could start the series with the team all together. One of these days, I'll get around to telling all of that, as long as Dean stays interested!

Hmmm... you're right! The only time we've seen Temp use his power besides on the Lloachern ship is on the cover of #3, and that might have been just for show. Let's see what Lash does with that.

I LOVE Overthink! It is so much fun drawing him. I can literally see him animated in my mind!

The BUGS!
[Big Grin Bounce] [Proty] [Big Grin Bounce]

The two little guys look fun and the milliped one is a bad guy?

Very interesting.
Just curious and the answer is probably obvious, for easier story telling purposes and visual identification, but why do the females have mammalian breasts?
Or do they just LOOK like breastsk, parallel evolution like?
Or something?

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Hey Candle, thanks for the happy dances!

Lash will have to tell you the history of Seksha, and how its inhabitants came to look like they do.

Iritt is definitely female, and has a primarily human body, but she has the butterfly wings and antennae. She's smaller than humans.

Hoppa looks like a combination of grasshopper and human, and she is female. She is a bit taller than the typical human. I would assume that a male of her kind would look armored, as she is.

Pede is male, and looks like a centipede but with a humanized face. Yes, he is one of Omarr's Assassins.

The ant folk look like ...ants... that stand erect. By the way, their gender is not obvious. Maybe they're female? They are smaller than typical humans.

The 2 characters in front are not obviously male or female, but that should become clear in #4's story.

I loved the bug characters from this series so much, I just HAD to spotlight them on this cover!

Posted by MLLASH on :

It's a valid question but one I haven't figured out the answer to [Smile]

Short answer: If you stand Johnny Comet and Hoppa side by side and then devolve them, what's left of Johnny would be protoplasm and what's left of Hoppa would be a tiny lil grasshopper.

Why their species evolved with specific types of anatomy is open to interpretation [Smile] I'll just say for now, that's how the Creator made 'em.

And I sure do LOVE that cover!

Posted by MLLASH on :

YIPES!! Belated THANK YOU to Rhino and NIghtcrawler from the previous page!

[Hug] [Hug]

Posted by Candle on :

The question's just for fun!

And Pede is an awfully cute name for an assassin!
I'm surprised he didn't change it to Pisen or Pesin or Pois or . . ..
Is he poisonous, by the way?
Many of the centi/milli types are, I think.
Or maybe acid poison?
Or he curls around a victim and crushes them or rips them apart with his feets!
sigh
Violent little buggy thoughts.
[Frown]
( [Smile] )

Posted by MLLASH on :

The question is fun but also thought-provoking. I enjoy being asked about all these guys that 14 or 15 year old me never would have thought anyone but me would know about. Thank you! [Smile]

Pede is more the crush/kill/rips you apart type. Not reflective of any cuteness in his name at all. I love how Dean draws him, and all of them.

Yeah, I am both fascinated and repulsed by 'bug culture'. Some of it is going to be seen during the scenes on Seksha in issues 4-5. Wish I'd been able to explore it more.

Posted by Candle on :

Oh, yes.
14 and 15 year old creator.
That explains the breasts on bugs!
lol

Gay teens think about boobies?
The gay men I've met seem to.
Still.
Or is it 'anyway'?
lol

Okay, so I posted up to page 8.

As an artist, I have plenty of options for how to depict certain scenes. I really thought about the way I did all of the new pages, and stand by my decisions.

They are certainly not pornographic, in fact, they are pretty tame, but they do push the envelope a little bit. I'm just being very careful here. They are thumbnailed, and I put a little content notice on the pages in question.

I LOVE these pages, and I thank Lash very much for the script!!!!

Posted by Candle on :

Love, love, love the Irrit and Overthink page.
What a wonderful relationship.

Love the red background work.
Johnny must be pretty desperate to go to a vampire, and not very smart.

I can hardly wait to see who's gone.
I'm guessing the gal with all the hair, the purple guy, and possibly, the red guy and the brown haired guy.
(Sorry for my lack of memory on names.)

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Glad you liked the Irrit/Othink page! I sure hope Lash likes it.

The interiors of the ship are mostly reds and beiges and browns. I have a feeling Johnny and Overthink will re-design the ship if they choose to keep it....

Yeah, Johnny seems kinda desperate.

On the very next update, you will find out who's gone. It's going to get exciting!

Thank you SO much for posting, Candle!

Posted by MLLASH on :

Lash **LOVES** the Iritt/Overthink scene!

In my original teen-drawn series, the more human Overthink and regular-sized Iritt were a couple. I decided-- why does that necessarily have to NOT be the case now, in the official version?

Dean-- I LOVED Vamp's room!! I'm so glad you went that route, design-wise. And those people in her room? Yep, there's a story there!! [Smile]

Johnny, desperate? I dunno, but he certainly fancies himself a bit of a player. Looks like he didn't know so much about Vamp... he was quite surprised and horrified by what he saw.

Dean, you totally took me off guard with naked Johnny Comet, Pilot in the buff! [LOL] It fits that he doesn't have a problem running around starkers.

Happy you're happy!

#4's up at the fan site. Wow. You guys are doing a great job. I wish the big two publishers would come out with comics this good again.

Michael - I like how you're piecing things together but not wasting too much time on any one scene.

Dean - Your designs are incredible and you've really become an excellent story-teller.

Thank you both!

In general, I'm trying to move around quite a bit to keep things interesting AND to show as many castmembers as possible. I'm so glad it's working for you!

There is an extended battle sequence coming up but I trust (hope!) it will be exciting!

Wow, Nighty, SO kind!

I love looking at the pages on (y)our site because the pages are laid out side-by-side like a real comic "book."

I want a couple of 'pews'!
They seem adorable!
I just got the idea, just this moment, that they might not be so nice.
Are they really bad pews disguised as cute pews?
sigh

I really hate the bad ruler guy.
Ugh in every way.

Bad, funny little ants, too.

Posted by MLLASH on :

I must say I LOVE Dean's animals... the "skooch" and the "pews" are completely him and only him, and I love them. I think they add so much to the Omarr and Manora scenes.

Speaking of Omarr-- if you are hating him, then I am succeeding. He deserves to be hated. Keep your peepers peeled for the final scenes in issue 6 when he-- >SPOILER DELETED<

Peeke and Abeew are actually scavengers from the roach tribe, but you will be seeing a member of the ant tribe soon.

[Love] to Shady!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Glad you guys like the Rexallian pets! Did you notice that Omarr was actually wiggling his toes for that one?

There will be 2 more batches of updates for issue 4. Still working on them at this time.

Posted by Candle on :

Good to know they were bad, funny roaches, not ants.
I knew that Hoppa said the ants were rather neutral toward Rexall, but there are so many 'traitor' types in the stories that I thought this must be 2 more.
Now, I can hardly wait to see the ants!

I'll check out the pews and the toes!
Love your thoughtful work, Dean.
Your creativity reminds me a little of Lightle.

That last page is BEE-yootiful.

Okay I'm officially announcing the start of the script for issue 7. I'll be starting it this week!

I'd like to get at least 2 issues written, maybe 3. I like Dean to know what coming up. [Smile] And it may get crazy in # 7 while we establish what happens after the dust settles. After that, though, look for a smaller, quieter character origin spotlight issue before the next star-shattering arc begins.

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

I feel like I'm almost kinda catching up with Lash! Now that #4 is done, I've thumbnailed all of #5 and most of #6. I'm really happy with my plan for #5 in particular. LW friends, Lash has put it into high gear!

I'm looking forward to your long term plan, Lash. You are SO creative. There's SO much that can be done in the Starsearchverse.

# 5 is pretty much the action-packed full-issue slugfest that should please fight scene fans. No half-talk, half-fight issue... it's ALL fight! [Smile]

It also sets up the satus quo-changing events in STARSEARCHERS # 6.

After hearing input from Dean, in a way I'm looking at the issues so far as set-up for what the series will eventually become.

I still haven't set # 7 to type yet, but the happenings are all rolling around my head. It's just a matter of typing it in correct order at this point.

Dean, I am sure the wait for the full issue of # 5 will be more than worth it!

Okay, I thought about it and thought about it, and finally decided I couldn't wait... I HAD to post the first page of #5.

Again, I've copied the Star Wars "previously" desgin. Hey, if it works, it works!

Lash will notice that the page numbers in his script won't match the way I visually laid out the pages, but I hope everyone enjoys the way we present this slug fest issue.

Please let me know your thoughts! Yes, I still use Sketch Lad quality linework, but how's the storytelling?

Lash, thank you SO much for the awesome story to tell. I LOVE doing this!

A Holo Model competition?!
Oh, man!
I mean, oh BOY!
A Starsearcher's competion?
Sweet!

I'm waiting to read you and Lash's Halloween pages until after I post something on the Halloween thread.
I don't want to get too discouraged knowing how incredible your stuff is.
sigh
It's hard sometimes, with all of the talent running around here!

Page 3 makes the other boo-boos that K'zle's gotten pale in comparison!
boo-HOO!

Thank you Rhinolicious! Shady, looking forward to your comments on the Halloween story.

When I saw page 3, even I said "OWWWWWCH!" and I wrote the scene-- Dean *really* brought the pain to K'zle!! All the lil Rebels are getting the hurt this issue it seems [Frown]

Candle,
I'm glad you're excited for the Holo Model competition coming up. I've done all the pencilling already, just need to color and letter, and that part takes quite a bit of time. Don't really have a deadline for when it will happen.

I know, Lash keeps doing mean stuff to the poor Neptunians! I figure the cut off tentacle will re-grow, but I have no idea what happens when he gets so stretched out....

PLEASE don't hold back on posting stuff!!!! Your contributions to the Museum exhibits have been invaluable!!!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

I'm currently scanning the rest of the pages for #5. Can't wait to color and post them! It'll be a while, though...

Added pages 4 & 5! The action continues....

Totally digging you doing many panels then a fun splash!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

That's the MO for this issue!

I added up to page 8....

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

page 6 - I thought there were more word balloons taking up space in the large panel. Oh well, I like the way it shows that the fight scene is all cleared.

page 7 - Proud of the way a lot was done in 7 panels.

page 8 - What do you mean the blue and red spiders remind you of someone? [Smile]

Looking good--! I have **GOT** to finish the # 7 script THIS WEEK!!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Issue 5 will be contain 14 pages of story. I don't know if that's a good thing or bad thing, actually. I did consolidate things differently than they were written. I think I was trying to be clever, but I think I just ended up shortening the issue. Sigh.

Still, I am happy with how it's turning out and I hope Lash is too.

I don't have much of #6 pencilled yet, but my thumbnail sketches are more faithful to the script this time. The cover will feature a secret that only Lash and I know about for now. Only he will know what I mean when he sees it. The rest of you will have to wait. Heh!

I'm really looking forward to #7, because there will be changes. Changes we can't yet give away, and changes that I don't even know about yet!

I'm SO in love with presenting this Starsearchers series! Addicted, I tell ya!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Oh, Nighty, I noticed that the website has had changes, too. I find it a bit confusing, but exciting. It kinda makes my head spin a little bit, but that's me anyway.... [Razz]

Posted by MLLASH on :

I did notice some changes and shortening, but nothing that really altered anything storywise. Don't worry about it. This ain't Marvel or DC, we get to be our own boss. [Smile]

Or look at it like this: if we throw in the VAMP solo Halloween flashback, it makes for a full issue.

Off to check out the Webcomic now!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Oh wait, I remember now! I wanted to consolidate issue #s 5 and 6 into one! I was able to bring #5 to 10 or 11 pages, but not #6.

Silly artist - trying to think all outside of the box and stuff!

Posted by MLLASH on :

Really? I thought # 6 was the most packed issue so far...

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Yeah, #6 is the one that needs all the pages as written. #5 is the one I was able to shorten (unnecessarily).

Sorry. It looks/works fine in Firefox but degrades poorly in I.E. I'll work on an alternative. I was trying to make room for the future issues. I also created a guest book which will eventually have Starsearcher smilies.

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

omg, I can't WAIT to see the smilies!!!!

JUST finished script for # 7. Wow.

Will re-read then send to Dean!

So, we all know that Omarr seems to love his little pets, so we meet Funky and the Tee Tees. We also learn maybe a little sumpin sumpin about his "marriage."

Posted by MLLASH on :

This page is a prime example of what makes Dean a true pro: the direction just made it clear that Manora would NOT be present in this scene, nothing else.

But Dean took that and ran with it-- ran in a direction that is going to totally enhance the Omarr/Manora storyline in the very near future.

That is one reason why I like Dean to have at least a couple scripts "in hand" at all times, so he is informed on upcoming happenings and can really use his imagination and make the absolute most out of these scenes-- because he DOES.

THANK YOU, Dean!!!!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Ah shucks, Lash!

I'm sure it's obvious to everyone that we are in fan-boy bliss with this project.

Thank YOU!

Posted by CandleLASHlight on :

Dark on Dark, especially red dark is almost impossible for me to make out very well.

Umm.
So the 'lights' are Tee Tees amd Funky is a mouse, sort of?
And there's a number of one eyed and two eyed females wrapped in blanets and holding disco balls?

Is any of that correct?
sigh

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

It saddens me that you have such trouble with your vision, Candlelight. You post your reactions more than anyone else, yet it seems you have to struggle to see what we do.

Sigh.

Well, you are very close in your description of Omarr's little love den.

Yes, the TeeTees are the little white floaty creatures. Yes, Funky is that bulbous creature sitting with the lavendar coneheaded lass.

I hope you can see that that's Omarr lounging in the center of the panel. Yes, there are a number of lasses, most scantily clad. The one eyed girl is holding 2 large, round fruits of some type - melons? The woman on the floor has a bottle or carafe of something that is letting out steam. There are 2 small Sekshans in the upper left corner with vials of something or another, also steaming.

Naughty, naughty emporer!

Issue #5 is nearly over. Things really get rolling in #6!

Starsearchers #5 is complete. Please let us know your thoughts, LW. There is a sketch by a guest artist included this time. Feel free to seek out his artblog and let him know you found him via Starsearchers.

PewPews and Skooches would be easy enough. I just wonder if a Funky would have to be bouncy? If so, how does the head stay up? TeeTees would need to be really lightweight and fluffy, but with their little antennae.

It's never easy.

Will do:

# 6

"READY... AIM..."

You say you want an execution? Omarr does, and he usually gets what he wants! With the younger Starsearchers on Earth about to be executed on galaxywide holofeed and the veteran Starsearchers still in deep space, things look grim. Still, it's never wise to bet against Overthink.

Lash, #8 is terrific. Let's call it a "transitional" issue, shall we?

Would you like to write up solits for 7 & 8? I'll start on the covers and we can start promoting!

Meanwhile, I posted page 4 of #6. Manora really shouldn't be such a shrinking violet, huh? smile

I ****LOVE**** that page!!!

I'm glad you like # 8!

OOOh, solicits. I'll BRB with those...

Wow, that was hard to do without spoiling anything. Here's what I came up with:

# 7:

"CUTS" The fallout begins after the cataclysmic events of last issue. Will anyone escape the metaphorical scissors that have been taken to the Starsearchers' universe?

# 8

"NO PLACE LIKE IT" When some of the pieces of the Starsearchers puzzle are removed, what will fill those gaps? It's the start of something different as the answers begin to be revealed!

Nice! Cover roughs have just become my next Starsearchers priority. Then coloring coloring coloring.

Spoiler..... Soon, the lil rebels will be brought into the stadium for the execution.

Posted by Candlelight on :

These highlight pages of the Assassins and the stage setting are wonderful.
I can see why Omarr would have ordered the spectacle.

I would think that most of them would be very uncomfortable on up there, though.
Their role is traditionally very covert.

Pede especially, is an under the rocks and hidden kind of creature, millipeds are, anyway.

Vamp and Witchery seem to be especially enjoying the moment.
I expected that of the glamorous Vamp, but Witchery's attitude is a surprise, and very interesting.
Her position is a little awkward, which I've seen on some models before.
Usually young ones.
It's also interesting that she still hasn't revealed her face.
Why?
Perhaps she doesn't really have one or it's damaged?
The people on her planet have normal looks.
Perhaps she actually feels shame at what she's doing and/or doesn't wish to be recognized by someone(s) in particular?
You can tell she's one of my favorites.

These are all very different and shuddery denizens of the dark!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Candle, thanks for the comments about the Assassins!

I like that you've questioned Witchery's hood. Maybe we will see her face at some point. I guess it all depends on what Lash does with the Assassins. Spoiler - we haven't seen Slaggar's face (yet) either!

I agree that Pede should/would be a creature of dark and cool places, but he's so large, it must be nearly impossible for him to remain hidden on these mostly-human worlds.

To clarify, you're seeing Shadowshade, not Vamp in this sequence. She does not seem to shy away from the spotlight, does she.

Plenty more to come in issue #6. Just takes time to get it all done!

Posted by MLLASH on :

You make a good point, Shady, about the Assassins seemingly would be a covert-type team. That thought never occured to me actually. [Smile]

See, in my head, Omarr considers himself such a big badass, he WANTS everyone to know the type of deadly power he can send after you if he so desires.

And his Assassins eat up the Spotlight. Well, except for Renee and yes, Slaggar and Witchery's faces are still unrevealed, although both are considered "celebri-gods".

I can promise you one thing: Slaggar's face WILL be seen, I'm figuring Dean will find a prime moment in issue 9 where he won't be wearing that scary helmet.

Thanks for giving me some things to consider! Love your comments, as always!

The Johnny/Overthink dynamic is so interesting and full of potential. Johnny has proven to have a very animated face, something I hope to continue to emphasize.

I like drawing mugs like Rikk's!

As ever, I'm having a great time with this.

Next... the Rebels are brought out into the arena!

Posted by Candlelight on :

I probably don't want to know what Rikk is doing, do I?
[No]

You are introducing more new characters, aren't you?
Gads!
I love your characters but I can't even remember what Rikk does, besides 'whatever'.
This is all so very anti-hero.

I can see Comet being played by James Dean and Rikk by Steve McQueen.

Posted by MLLASH on :

Shady-- Rikk was asleep, promise.

There are absolutely MORE new characters on the horizon, so get out your scorecards! [Wink]

It's okay if you can't remember what Rikk does-- he hasn't played a huge role so far-- but he has vibration powers (last seen used on the spiders attacking them in issue 5 on Seksha).

I'm not sure what you mean by "anti-hero", help me understand. If by anti-hero you mean there are no clear shades of black and white in many of the Starsearchers, I very much agree.

Hang in there, things are going to take some jagged twists and turns THIS ISSUE, promise.

Oooooh, casting call! Dean, didya see that?

Shady, I'd love to see you on the Starsearchers and Legion World Facebook pages. Let me know if you need help getting there!! And as always, THANK YOU for the comments and for reading! [Hug]

Shady,
I realize you have vision issues, so I must ask... could you see the verbiage on the first few panels of page 11? I hope that it is obvious that a dark, ominous voice/presence has visited Rikk in his sleep. Rikk bursts awake to find his sister asking him to join the group.

Meanwhile, I love that you are thinking about who could portray these characters. On our Facebook page, I collected LOTS of inspiration images for many of the characters. It would be fun to get your opinions on those.

Again, thank you for reading and posting.

Posted by Candlelight on :

[Hug]

I saw them.
I just thought that the voice ended up belonging to his sister, that she was seeing him doing something 'bad' in the dark, in the bed.

lol, gads

Shades of Omarr!
lol
I'm sure what you were showing and what LASH was saying would have been perfectly understandable to most everyone who read the scene.

I'll check out your site.
I'm still a little shaky on Facebook, I'm afraid, but this will give me a great reason to work things out.

Posted by Candlelight on :

And Michael,
yes, that's a good definition of anti-hero.
I also see them as complex and very often, depressed and unlikeable.
The two examples of film stars that I gave were icons of the genre, one for each decade during the 50's and 60's.

I like that you have some true heroes in the mix.
Not that heroes aren't complex, they can be and I like them that way.
I just need likeable/endearing in order to hold my interest.

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Nearly done coloring the scene where the Rebels come before the crowd.

Posted by MLLASH on :

Well I'm loving the extra-size assassination extravaganza!

I love that you took the time to create a whole page for each young Rebel and am glad you suggested the additional dialogue.

I didn't write it like this, ya'll-- I kept it at the usual 20ish pages, but Dean is going above and beyond the call, and we all get to benefit!!

And it's a treat for my eyes!! All the pages are powerful but K'zle's P.O.V. page is especially excellent, and of course Drey's. EXTRA-Very nice. [Smile]

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Thank you, Lash.

Giving the Assassins and the Rebels so much panel time was a true indulgence, which I couldn't resist.

Now that (almost) all the introductions have been done, it's time for action! Buckle your (space) seat belts!

Posted by MLLASH on :

Omarr is a scoundrel for certain.

But there are planets out there who adore him (we saw some residents of Seksha cheering his name).

I see him as one of those charismatic people who has stumbled into good fortune; he used his charisma to take over Rexall and turn his people's warlike tendencies away from each other and toward other planets in the beginning.

None of that makes him a good person by any means, though. He's wicked and petty to the core.

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

The bad news: Our home pc is still messed up, so I can't scan/color/letter/post stuff yet. We're slowly dealing with it. The complexity of the issue, plus busy RL is keeping it from getting done.

The good news: I've been doing LOTS of penciling! I just finished pencils on issue #7, and am a few pages into #8 now!

Sidenote: I also have'nt picked up my comics since December or November, so I'm out of the loop on all that, too! Gah! Sigh! Choke!

OH MY GOSH!!!! There's some characters... one in particular... I'd LOVE to get a sneak peek at, when you get there!

I feel like I should go ahead and start # 11 since you're doing all this pencilling, might as well keep it going, right?

Today I'll do my standard re-familiarization (rereading the past scripts) and get going on # 11 tomorrow!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Finally, our cracked out computer stuff is manageable!!!! I was able to color and letter a couple more pages of #6.

So, if you recall, the Starsearchers' young rebels were paraded onstage before the assassins, and Omarr had just arrived. Well, now that he's here, it's time for some booty kickin'!

Please let us know what you think of the execution scene so far!

Thank you Lash!

I assume you'd tell me if you had concerns about the way your story is being depicted.

So, issue #6 will have a total of 36 story pages. I'm working on page 29 right now.

Hang in there, LW! The excitement is just beginning!

I hope Temp is okay, somehow.
Perhaps he's not actually killable or he can absorb the Rexallian energies or something!

I loved the twisty parts at the end with the delayed time casts and the other 'variables'.
Good old chaos theory!

Thanks, Shady, I was very pleased with myself for coming up with that time-delay twist! [Smile]

More surprises coming hard and fast in the remaining pages!

Thanks, Shady!

So on page 28 we meet Delana and Jaykub, cuz... y'know, there just aren't enough characters yet! [Wink]

Overthink's made a whooooole lotta rebel friends on a whooooole lotta planets!

Jaykub has strong ties to one of our regular Starsearchers cast, which I'm sure will be easy to figure out.

Hey LW, I finished #6 and posted it on Facebook, but haven't had time to upload it to photobucket and then post it here. I will do so soon.

Oh, I haven't seen a mention about the podcast here.

Is LW interested in Starsearchers?

You guys are definitely getting better and better with each issue! Didn't see that ending coming!

Posted by MLLASH on :

Thank you EDE! I spent some time regretting the slap-dash way I put the crew together in issue 1, but have decided upon several rereadings that I am still glad I got the entire gang together in one issue... some storytelling suffered a bit perhaps and that is all my fault.

I like to agree things have gotten better every issue writing-wise (Dean has knocked a home-run every time IMO); I think # 3 I hit my stride as a writer here, and have kept on running!

I only hope I can maintain interest with the transitional issues following # 6's bananas cliffhanger... a couple of issues depend heavily on intrigue here; I know I can count on Dean 100% to make what I've written look immensely better than it actually is!

I'm pretty certain that both Shady and Nightcrawler follow us exclusively here.

I know uploading and posting is a LOT of additional work on top of your pencilling, coloring and lettering!

If it would help, I am happy to post the pages here (I can do that from the Facebook page, save the images to my computer and go from there).

Love you, Dean!!!!!

Gosh Lash, that'd be nice! Let me know if FB shrinks them down too much. If so, I'll work it out.

I also mentioned on FB that I will be posting some cover roughs for #7. I like my first idea, but I have even more ideas, so I want to submit them to the group(s) for input/vote for favorite.
[Cool]

I still need to add the to drunkduck, too. At least dd doesn't shrink 'em like FB does.

Posted by MLLASH on :

I will get on this right now!

Thanks so much!

Thanks! Very exciting with good twists and turns.
Reminds me of Power Company (one of my favorite books).

I need to get you both set up at the web-comic site so you can post them directly there in comic book form, if you like.

Posted by Candlelight on :

I can follow the webcomic if you prefer.
I plan on trying to do facebook LW soon, too.

Don't go to a lot of extra work.
Doesn't NC run the Legion World facebook?
I'm sorry that I'm so far behind on the internet stuff.

I'd love it if the flipbook was updated, especially now that #6 is complete.

Thank you for the responses.

Lash and I have done some behind-the-scenes work on the next issue. We have actually chosen the cover image, so the readers' vote thing is unfortunately cancelled.

Let's call #7 a "pivot point" in the plot. Lash, would you like to post a "solicitation" type of blurb? Images soon....

STARSEARCHERS # 7

"NO PLACE LIKE IT"

With one swift and sharp action, the universe of the Starsearchers has been changed forever! Find out how eliminating one puzzle piece alters everyone else in the picture in this oversize roller-coaster ride of an issue!

Everyone's reactions are spot on.
I've been in a moment like that a number of times.

1. The teacher came back into the classroom crying and said that President Kennedy had been shot.

2. When I went outside afterdark and a storm to check my horses and saw that the barn wasn't there anymore and something was screaming.

3. The spaceshuttle blew up while I watch on live hook-up.

4. We were watching the effects of the first jet that hit the first tower and the second jet flew into the second tower.

There've been a few others, but that's the idea.

Great job, guys.
(Poor Overthink, caught by his very name. Chaos is smiling.)

Thank you so much Shady!!

Dean, your skills with pencilling, lettering AND coloring continue to enthrall me. Just WOW.

Shady and Lash,
Thank you both for the comments on these pages, and for your comments each time. It is a pleasure for me.

Interesting tidbit.... there are 172 more panels to go in this issue! Some large, some small, some detailed, some simple. There are 31 more pages. That makes an average of just over 5.54 panels per page. This does not include bonus material like rejected cover roughs, character sketches or pinups, or back cover material.

A LOT to come. Lash and I strive to keep it interesting!

We're up to page 5 now!

Pede is dead!
Alas, with a name like that, my kitty's name is Poom, he couldn't be around long, I guess.
What a mess!

Omarr's brain should be about dead.
Couldn't have happened to a better guy.
Was he REALLY Ronar/s father?
gads

Pede chunks...

Posted by MLLASH on :

re: Pede chunks... in the script I wrote an aside to Dean, something like "yeah, he's very much dead!" so Dean could go a little gross with it if he wanted! [Big Grin]

So Omarr and Pede are gone for good... WHO will be NEXT? *nefarious chuckle*

Up to page 8 is posted.

Art confessions-- Starlette is prominently featured because I like her prominent features.

My word balloon placement did not go as planned on page 7, panel 2. I didn't want to cover up the civilian Rexallians, so things are weird there. Oh well..

I did spend a moment longer on the panel where Drey grabs Ronar. Yes, I'm playing to the speculation about them. However, I don't think it comes across as very homo-erotic really.

Lots of fun stuff in the works!

Thanks, Lash!

Oooowwwww!
Page 14 is pretty exciting if one is a Mharva fan, which I am!

The Elder is an empathic healer?
Very wonderful!

And, I never thought I's say this, poor big spider!

I'll be restarting the posting of STARSEARCHERS to Legion World very soon!

Dean JUST NOW posted 3 more pages of issue 13 to the Facebook page, and they contain THIS hysterical panel I am posting to whet your appetite:

ISSUE 8 has been posted in its entirety! In this issue, we deal with more fallout from Omarr's death, and lose some more folks from the primary team.

We also first visit XYNTYN, the Starsearchers' new home base planet, and meet Gruugan!

Comments welcome and appreciated.
