Well, with Blink back & Austen gone, I bought my first issue of this featuring the team since 22 (the abberation being the Nocturne flashback two-parter).

Not bad for Bedard's first issue, apart from his leaning too hevaily on Beak (which makes me think that he's going with the team to "Earn his wings" at the end of this, leaving TJ, and her possession-power, behind - and with another pointy-eared blue female on the team... not a swap I would be happy with). Namor & Reed's guest spots work though.

As for Namora (I'm presuming she is a gender-bender counterpart of Namor, and not his late cousin/Namorita's "mum" who ended up in Namor's role), she came off as a bit of a parody really. I presume the "Imperius Regina" (their bold), wasn't meant to elicit sniggers...

None of the others were out of character (as I remember them), but only Morph & TJ got any moments that showed their character. And the fact that Bedard did a good TJ isn't going to help if he boots her off. At least Mimic was relegated to background noise.

Any other comments?

Looks like you were right SoM!!!! I just hope we see TJ around!!!!!

Though i like the characters of Mimic, Blink & Morph (who doesn't seem to be the AOA Morph who was actually a mutated version of Changeling?)Exiles is one of those books that just annoys me.

That's not changing here, mainly because of Beak.

Did anyone else get the impression that Beak is now an American with some severe retardation instead of a Dutch kid who doesn't speak English very well?

Posted by Frostfyre on :

Also it appears that Nocturne will be a member of the new Brotherhood Of Evil!

Posted by Comet King on :

I was thinking of buying this again after the Austen run because I read a preview that said Beddard was going to address who the flip the Time Broker (or whoever) is.

But if Beak's on the team I might not bother. He was annoying enough in Morrison's X-Men as it was!

[Bump] for 59, out this week.

Well, I still like EXILES, and I ADORE the art too! Really enjoyed the recent Kulan Gath (sp?)storyline!

Posted by RTVU2 on :

Hey LASH,

can you tell me what happeend to Nocturne and Sunfire-was that her name?

Posted by Quislet, Esq. on :

Does Beak have any super power?

With Heather de-powered (IIRC), that's two members without powers.

Posted by Just Pov on :

VU-- I'm nowhere near as cute as Lashie, but I've got some answers for you. [Wink]

Nocturne was left in the main Marvel universe when the team picked up Beak. yay. [Roll Eyes]
I hope after TB's done his big Beak story we get TJ back where she belongs...

And Sunfire died [Frown] while the team was fighting a Brood-possessed Mimic.

And I think Beak's powers are super-annoyance and super-uselessness, Quis. [Razz]

Why the hell anyone would wanna recycle useless Morrison characters like him and Ord, I haven't a clue.

Posted by ActorLad on :

Er, unless I've missed something Ord of Breakworld isn't a Morrison character, he's all Joss.

We're headed back to the AoA, bayBEE! [Eek!]

I buy this title in TPB form (chastise me, I deserve it!), and just bought the 'Earn Your Wings' collection.

Sigh. I understand the value of a lesser powered character as a kind of window for the readers, but... Beak???

If the next trade isn't stupendously awesome, I'll be left with only Invincible and Losers as my TPB pull list... Maybe for the best?

Although I am very interested in what the real deal with the Timebroker is... Been intrigued ever since the Exiles/X-Men crossover where it seemed as though the 'bad Alex' had possessed the Timebroker or something (IIRC)...

Paul Pelletier is the new artist of Exiles, beginning in September.

YyyyyyyyYYESS! [Bouncing Boy] !!!

NEGATION's Team Supreme reunited... on EXILES!!

Sorry, as much as I love Bedard's writing, Calafiore's work is to angular for me...and Sakakibara just hasn't been doing it for me either. But THIS has me the most excited about EXILES I've been in a looooong time.

I just wish September wasn't so far away! [Frown] [Smile]

I may have to start getting this title again. I lost interest and dropped it after the Hyperion story but if Povikins is excited about the new creative team I probably ought to give it another chance.

Posted by MLLASH on :

EXILES is still good to me, and I am interested in just what is going to happen now that they've gone to confront the Timebroker.

Beak being non-powered never bothered me as a member of Exiles, but you have to remember that when I was a kid, non-powered characters WERE sometimes members of super-teams, like Mal Duncan over in Teen Titans. I kinda find stuff like that cool.

Pelletier, eh? That's pretty groovy although I really like the 2 current rotating artists.

# 64 SPOILERS!!!!!

SAY IT AIN'T SO!!!

Namora... NoooOOOOoooOOOOooo! Well, she had a decent run on the team. I thought Blink and Mimic were goners too... scary issue.

That last page made my DAY!!! Can't wait for the Hyperions to lay the MAJOR SMACKDOWN on evil Hype!

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

One of the casualties of my recent title purge. To me Exiles has been going steadily downhill and I'm tired of the two books every month shipping. Marvel can't get half their titles out once every three months but we get five issues in three months for Exiles?

Posted by MLLASH on :

I forgot toout about # 64-- page 1 (2 if you count the PREVIOUSLY page) made me bust out laughing! [LOL] The only comic I've read today (and I've read several) that made me do that!

Of course, I still have GLA and I Can't Believe It's Not the JLA to read... and the wacky-looking Ultimate Defenders on the cover of ULTIMATES 2 # 6 look promising... [Big Grin]

Looks like Beak'll be heading back 'home' fairly soon, Star Boy. I kind of like the character, but he does take up space in a valuable 'superteam' slot. Maybe he can be like a mutant Rick Jones sidekick sort of guy.

Unless Namora has some regenerative powers, looks like she'll no longer be appearing in EXILES. Now if they'd get rid of Sabretooth, I'd be happier.

I was prepared to drop this title, but the last couple of issues have convinced me to stick around. New from the convention of where the EXILES will be visiting make me want to hang around, as well.

So I had the first three trades for a while. I decided to get the next eight trades! At once! I've been reading Exiles straight now since early October. [Smile]

Wow. The Austen issues certainly were the weakest. Especially that story where Magik killed the Avengers. The arc he did after that weren't so bad. Bedard was better but not as good as Winik though he has grown on me. (I loved his CG stuff!)

Star Boy, Beak is the Exiles Bouncing Boy. Anyone can be a hero! [Smile]

I love the artists. McKone, Calafiore, Travis Henry(!!!). Sakakibara I didn't love but he was all right.

The only thing that worries me is the formula may be gone forever. I hope to see them in a "typical" story again where they arrive on a new world and must save it, etc.

Posted by Star Boy on :

Well, I just got the latest trade, with the Timebreakers and Destroy All Monsters arcs... And they were... okay? Not sure what I think about it all. I like Mimic, so it was good to see some cool character stuff from him, and the loss of Namora was a total shock! All in all it was good but not excellent. Maybe I need to read it again. [Smile]

Posted by Jorg-EM on :

Namora was kind of evil...but was hot!!! I kinda liked her better than TJ.

I have to agree overall it was good not excellent. Winick/McKone were excellent. As I said above I am worred all this recent stuff has broken the formula.

The upcoming stuff looks excting. New Universe, 2099, Squadron Supreme, etc.

Real quick idea about Exiles. Maybe have some of the Marvel 616 time lost heroes all join. Cable, Rachel Summers (Phoenix), Bishop, etc. Time lost heroes in the proper MU i think complicates things. This is a title I LOVE because of the setting. Sometimes the stories are average but the setting is so cool I love it. I can lose Sabertooth and add some more heroes! The crystal is a big place. [Smile]

Alan buys this from time to time but not regularly so I'm never really sure whats happening - I'd love to see Cyclops and Havoks mother turn up - we've met their dad so why not? Maybe they get their mutant gene from her?

Good idea! Ever since Adam X an obscure X character that is rumored to be her son with Lilandra's brother D'Ken (i think)I have been interested in her. Anyways he was a cool human/shiar/mutant back in the 90s.

[Bump] !

Issue 75, and we're gonna party like it's 2099!

No Pelletier for this arc, apparently, but Jim C does a decent job this issue. And the story even picks UP a beat. Bedard is really finding the right voice for his characters, especially Proteus. And wait until you see P's new host...! [Shudder]

Posted by DrakeB3004 on :

Is Longshot in this now? Is it 616 Longshot? What's up with him these days?

Posted by Calybos on :

Longshot's been added, and (according to Mojo, anyway) there's only ONE Longshot... this is him.

Posted by Pov on :

Yes, and I don't know for certain... but there's only one Mojo across the whole continuum. Maybe it's the same with Longshot?

Heather made a trade with Mojo-- TV access across the timebreakers' nexus to other realities for Longshot. The catch is, he's not the Longshot we're familiar with; Mojo wiped his mind again after his most recent failed rebellion.

Still good to see him, though. And he had the best line this issue, I thought--

"So much for not impacting your timeline... [LOL]

Posted by Pov on :

Calybos got it, then... I'm too slow. [Embarrassed]

Posted by Ultra Jorge on :

So they are in 2099 right now. And Proteus is in the body of Click Here For A Spoiler2099 HULK...scary

It was a very good issue. Not that i never trusted Bedard but it seems he's getting better and better.

I do worry what happens next. He's changed the Exiles status quo. World Tour stuff is cool! But then? Do they get to pick what worlds to save from the Crystal Palace? I hope so. I liked the basic just go to one world and try to fix the timeline original premise.

Also if Click Here For A SpoilerSpider-Man 2099 joins which appears he is...I always find it odd to have TWO agility guys on the same team. The other being Longshot.

I do love this title. I love all the alternate world stuff.

For some reason, this made me think of Neo (or "the One") of "The Matrix" -- always fighting the same battle over and over and always destined to fail. Come to think of it, Mojo makes as much sense as the "Architect"...

And Mojo and Longshot were first... [Smile]

Bedard talks about the Exiles' visit to Earth-Squadron Supreme and beyond at Comicon's THE PULSE. Spoilers!

EXILES 84

I was all but ready to drop this (they've killed off all the characters I cared about), when who appears but a version of the heroine, lamely butchered in 'our' reality, Darkstar. Along with Northstar, Aurora and the rest of an Alpha Flight. Or against, I should say, since she's actually fighting the Canadian superteam alongside her own Russian one. Good or bad, I'm just glad to see her. Most of her, anyway, since she's been saddled with a truly hideous mask thing. Although I can't really call it a mask, since it covers her mouth and nose and not her eyes.

If *she* joins the Exiles, I'd definitely keep reading.

Posted by Ultra Jorge on :

Darkstar would make a good Exile. Mystery Lad I have a dream of the characters that got dealt a bad hand by the proper MU get a chance to join the Exiles. Magik(again) for instance to name another russian blonde.

Looks like the status quo is back. I did request it. But maybe not like this. But maybe the aliens are right. The Exiles did need some structure. Oh wait though...is there going to be a new team???

It didn't suck at ALL. It was usually pretty cool. I kinda wish I'd finished it out.

Of course, it's a pretty winning scenario as it is-- kinda a WHAT IF with recurring (yet everchanging) characters.

I dunno what happened to the EXILES after issue 88, but I bought the new EXILES # 1 this week, mainly because it featured 3 of my favorite femme-muties: Polaris, Scarlet Witch and Blink.

It didn't suck so far. Jury's still out though.
