Here's an ad from around 1979. I'm pretty sure the art's by Joe Staton.
Feel free to add other group shots to this thread.
I don't have a scan (my collection is still in Newfoundland) but #300 has a wonderfull 2 page spread at the end
This is it, right?
I love how Batman and Spider-Man managed to sneak into that shot there.
Yup thats the one...and the easter egg images are awesome as well...

This great SWAN group shot appears as a cover to one of the old LSH indexes. Many may have missed it.
Here's one from the wedding tabloid. I had to scan it in several parts and cobble it back together. I also did a little bit of touch up and color adjustment. It's certainly not perfect...
We are so alike. I still have my original tabloid... complete with this pull-put that I used crayons on to correct all the coloring errors. Heh!!

Agreed about not perfect (What is?), but still a nearly seamless job. No apparent sign of color corrections, which means ya nailed it!
And a small group of my own...
Well... Swan, Kaye, and Adams, actually. From the covers of Action 252, Secret Origins 25, and Superboy 147.
Check out the way Lightning Lad's undies are bunching up over his belt. Lu totally just gave him her infamous triple-wedgie!
I don't think I've ever seen Lu with that hair, come to think of it. Both the color and the shape are not what I'm used to from her...

Interesting shot. Note that it has to take place during the events of Adventure # 317: Dream Girl is a member, and Ayla is still Lightning Lass.
Dreamy's giggling about all the boys fawning over her...
Well, she's the only one sitting around in a dang bathing suit!
She's such a trendsetter!
I'm surprised not to see Shady there. I always forget what a relative late-comer she was to the team, showing up after the Shooter Four (Karate Kid, Princess Projectra, Ferro Lad and Nemesis Kid).
Yup, she was the last new Legionnaire before the Legion left Adventure.
But that was a few years, I think, or at least quite a few stories.
She was in the Fatal Five comeback and the Mordru introduction arc, as well as, the 'girl' story with Ambassador . . . Thorna, was it?
All of which you probably knew, but some of the youngsters might not have.

Actually, no. Chemical King and Timber Wolf joined in Adv. 372; Tasmia joined in 366 (after having been intro'd in 365).
Ambassador Thora was the villain in 368.
It is interesting how much Tasmia appeared after her introduction. In many cases (Wildfire, for example), a new Legionnaire faded into the background immediately after joining. But Tasmia figures prominently in the next few stories, as you point out, and even develops enough of a personality that Lu cattily accuses her of going after Brainy, then Mon. I wonder if Shady was a favorite of Shooter's, or if he naturally gravitated toward the characters he created.

The man is very much hit or miss with female characters. Tasmia is almost without fail, a strong character, while Jeckie, another Shooter creation, is fainting all the time (and really doesn't seem to develop a personality until she snaps Nemesis Kid's neck, decades later).
Good point, Set. Although three girls (Projectra, Dream Girl, and White Witch) defeat Mordru and Lu's defining scene of pining for Superboy establishes her as a strong personality, those appear to be the exceptions during Shooter's run.
I think this art was by Jimmy Janes, but he wasn't credited. It's a subscription ad from around 1980.
Imra is in one of her strawberry-blonde phases.
Ah, the good old days, when the Legionnaire with the most cleavage was Cosmic Boy...

With Star Boy in a close second. Why did they change his turtle neck to a v neck?
Notice that Mon is missing. He must have been holding the camera.
Another offering from the Wedding Tabloid, by Grell and Colletta...
This was in the Who's Who in the LSH mini. I'm not sure who the artist was.

I have absolutely no memory of Chemical King joining the Legion, even though I know that he did.
I remember his death statue in the Superman special but not his later joining (or his death, for that matter.)
strange
Timber Wolf is similar.
I remember his introduction story in Adventure, but not his actual joining.
weird
Chem first appears (in story, not as a cover statue) in Adv. # 371 as a trainee at the Legion Academy. In the next issue, he and Timber Wolf (also a trainee) are asked to participate in an undercover mission, along with Chameleon Boy and Superboy, to infiltrate the School for Super-Villains. Chem and Wolf are awarded diplomas and Legion membership at the end of the story.
I have a special fondness for # 372, because it and # 368 were the first two Adventure-era Legion comics I read (not counting reprints). They belonged to a friend of mine who lived across the alley. Somewhat later--I think when he moved away--he gave me those two issues, and I still have them.
I recently reconnected with him on Facebook. I'll have to drop him a line to see if he remembers that.
Alex Ross Legion,from Justice #12
Love that shot from Justice...but Tasmia's taataa seems to be really in your face here.
The Ross portrait is very moody, but too many people are facing away from the camera.
Are there two Wildfires? One on the right and one flying above the time portal?
Sun Boy is floating above the portal.
Is the face behind Wildfire that of Tyroc or Invisible Jacques in the Alex Ross shot? He appears dark-skinned and curly-haired, but without a costume, it's hard to tell, since artists kind of make up their own faces. (Star Boy's face, in this one, is particularly distinctive, with that square jaw that's normally hidden by a beard.)
The Who's Who picture at the top of the page is funny. Characters you'd expect to see flying, like Mon-El and Ultra Boy, are running (and look kind of like Scooby-Doo characters, running from a ghost, in those frozen action poses), while characters you'd expect to see closer to the ground, like Timber Wolf, are flying.
I have to go with Tyroc in the pic based on the outfits on the others.
That would be my guess. He seems to have sideburns, and I don't remember Jacques having those. The picture doesn't go down far enough to show his high collar.
Originally posted by Dev Em:

Ah, I see it now. His chest emblem looks almost identical to Wildfire's, and other details are obscured.

My guess is Tyroc, because all of the costumes seem to be squarely Cockrum/Grell designs. I believe a number of them had been modified some by the time Jacques joined.
And thanks for posting this one. I adore Alex Ross' work, but hadn't seen that image before.
Here's the earlier Grell image modified
Long Live The Legion by Lightle
And here's another by Lightle
hmmm I sure wish we can see the actual full design of Phantom Girl's.....White Witch as nude? Element Lad, Saturn Girl - their costumes looked odd. Bouncing Boy skinny? interesting.
Chuck WAS skinny from time to time in Legion history.
Is the alien form behind Nura Quislet?
I like the sleeveless Dream Girl costume design.
It might work as a basic idea for the current Legion sleeveless female designs.
It's much better then the keyhole thing going on now.
Love the Ross picture, even though it's very difficult for my eyes to really make out.
In the Ross pic, is that a face behind Dawnstar's head?
If so, who's?
Yes, that's who crossed my mind, too.
He's the last of the active Legionnaires from that time period, isn't he?
I'll go with Blok.
Thanks.
(I understand that other's are missing besides Blok - Jeckie, Val, Lu, Mysa, Jan, Tenzil, etc.. I just ment ones I remember mostly from that era. Rightly or wrongly. Sigh.)

Val can actually be seen behind Garth's left shoulder. There's a dark harline and a yellow collar, plus white boots down below.
Great!
I see the boot, collar (a blackish point and the hair on his head.
Wow!
Does Imra have her arm going across to Garth?
I can't make out where her right arm and shoulder are.
Is there a face at her neck or is that just ear rings or . . . ?
(And I have the screne magnification on 150%!)

I think it's Ultra Boy's face behind Dawny. You can see green tights behind her... behind, and his style of boots down lower.
Also, I see a reddish cape and red boots behind Cos - must be Jeckie, but it could be Supergirl.
I think maybe Tinya is to the (our) right of Jo - I think that's her bell-bottomed pant leg and flat footwear.
I agree about the two sets of boots belonging to Jeckie and Jo but I think the face by Dawnstar is at on a different plane for perspective and orientation - foreward facing and closer.
The boot is much smaller and facing sideways, toward the screen like Cham, Lar and Brainy.
I was going to ask if that was a boot and cape, the one you identified as Jeckie or Kara!
Thanks to you and WWW for helping identify them.
Is it hard for you guys to make things out, too?
Or is it just me?
It is a challenge, despite its beauty.
I see what you mean about the face behind Dawny not really lining up with what are obviously (to me) Jo's tights and boots. I don't think it's Blok, though. It looks like a light skinned person with neat dark hair. Maybe it's Superboy?
Could be!
This is a preliminary sketch of an unused cover by Adam Hughes.
I did this one in January of 1999 - 11 years ago!
Now, I'm not saying I'm a big fan of his Legion work, but you can't deny Ditko's quirky uniqueness.
This is from LSH # 268, the Dr. Mayavale story.
Just thought I'd play with it a bit. I'm working with a new version of Photoshop, so I need to get used to the tools.
This is from #250, the Omega story.

From L31 #17, pencils by Sanford Greene.
oh oh oh.... what about the most beautiful shot of four most powerful guys flying upward with Dawnstar? drawn by Jim Sherman or Josef Rubenstien....hmm the guys are Ultra Boy, Wildfire, Mon-El, and Superboy...or only three? I cannot remember....they were coming out of the Legion HQ...one big splash page. anyone knows I am talking about? I think it's about the beginning of the Earthwar Saga...I believe.
It was Ultra Boy, Wildfire, Mon-El and Dawnstar. I recall being able to find it by doing an image search at google or yahoo, but I just tried and couldn't find it. I'll add it to my list of scans to do.
There's an artist who used to post here who gave some links to his work, which I love.

I've always really enjoyed Greg's work.
He and Steve Lightle are favorites of mine.
This must have been a commission since it's the only reason I can think of why he'd include Lydda in that grouping.
Especially since he didn't put her with Rokk.
Why DIDN'T he put her with Rokk?
Maybe that what the client requested, I guess.
Lovely colors, as always, LL.
You're just consistently wonderful.
Lydda's outfit looks slightly 'speckled' or 'glittery' to me.
Is that intentional on your part or is it just my eyes?
As Night Girl, I think that a starfield outfit is absolutely appropriate for her, much moreso than Troy's is.
Here's the Perez spread with the blocked out characters added in the best I could.

That was my thought too. The only other reason I could think of is that Greg simply forgot which Legionnaires were paired with each other. It has been awhile since he was the regular LSH artist.

Thank you!
Lydda's outfit looks slightly 'speckled' or 'glittery' to me.

I think that's more due to the shading Greg put into the original pencils. I didn't do anything to add any kind of a starfield effect to it, though you're right, it wouldn't be inappropriate for the character in question.
Those are awesome colors, Lou!
Love the Sketchy drawing above! It's nice that Comet Queen found another calling.
I love this one, I got it on these boards but I think there was just a link to it, or something like that.
Anyway -
There's a signature on the drawing, which I can't make out.
I suspect it's a Steve Lightle, another favorite of mine (but, as always, I could be wrong, sigh.)
It's by various artists from Wildstorm.
It'd be nice if they made the frikkin signatures readable.
These covers are so neat, especially this first one -

These are both by Gary Frank, of course.

I think there's one on the right, by Ayla's hip and one or even two(3?) on the left, by Gim's elbow.
Are there any more?
Multiple artists explains why I couldn't really pinpoint the artistic style, since there's multiple styles!
It might be fun for people to try to guess who drew whom!
I'll start the guessing.
Gim and maybe Brainy look similar in style to me.

Which means that Kitson didn't draw Gim.
sigh
He probably didn't draw Brainy, either.
And I obviously don't know who the Wildstorm artists are.
Did they all ink their own, I wonder?
If one person inked everyone, that might explain why Gim and Brainy have so many similar techniques (looking at them again, I can see quite a few differences, too
.)
On the other hand, Jim Lee is the caliber of artist that other artists learn from them and it effects their own styles.
Anyway, keep the information coming, I love the exchanges and knowledge gathered!

Actually, looking at Jeckie in that pose, got rid of the tiara and it might work.
It's working now, okay.
Thanks!
I HATE Jeckie's outfit there.
The gloves with the sleeveless look, the full mask with the keyhole, the garter look on the high boots, the crown with the rest of it, the cape with a collar, the yellow hair, ALL terrible.
Sensors low-cut top in that picture, as opposed to the gratuitous boob-hole shown in other pictures, is actually a big improvement. Real human persons wear tops that show off some cleavage all the time, so that doesn't seem nearly as stripperiffic as the 'cleavage window.'
The tiara is looking dumb there, as are the short sleeves, 'though. I think I like the original Lightle design best. Very sleek lines, no clutter.
Boy, if I ever thought Supergirl wearing a skimpy skirt made a lick of sense, seeing her flying out in front of a bunch of men just killed that notion. Way to make Cham look like a perv!
Huh, just looked again. Jeckie has hooters, and Kara has nothing. Tenzil and Jan have more prominent chest-thrustage going on than Supergirl. On the one hand, cool, not every super-babe needs to have beach-ball-sized-bazongas, on the other hand, it's more likely to be an oversight or trick of perspective than any deliberate design choice to portray a woman an athletic build...
It's a wonderful group shot of the Legion! I'd rather celebrate that than get caught up in the distraction of how women are portrayed in comics. The artist did a great job.
Nowlan\'s Legion This one's FABOO!!

Thanks everyone for the overwhelmingly nice comments about my artwork! I'm flabbergasted!
lil'rhino & MLLASH- Thanks for buggin' me to join Legion World! There seems to be plenty of swell folks commenting here!
Caliente- You made my day! (That was yesterday, maybe, depending on how many days it takes to read this message...)
Candle & Blacula- I wasn't even consciously aware that I left out the founders. I was just putting in lots of my favorite members and ran out of space before I even thought about them. I guess they get enough attention anyway! (I forgot about Brainy, too.)
And it's great to meet Nightcrawler & Mattropolis & knowjack, too!

That's an interesting group shot. Them scattering in different directions is an interesting stylistic choice, but I like that Colossal Boy isn't all growed-up and playing his usual role as 'Backdrop Boy,' and that Violet isn't shrunk and standing on someone's hand or shoulder.
Thanks Lone Wolf Legionnaire for the scan of who's who in the Legion number 6. I tried to find it in google images but never could find it.
I hope you didn't mind that I took out the logo, and if you need another picture just holler.
Mind it? We can actually see the entire picture, what's to mind?
The group shots look better without the writings. I hope to see more group shots from the Baxter era and also from the current Legion. The roster of the current Legion is also interesting in that it includes Matter-Eater Lad and Tyroc who were not seen much during the baxter era.

I love Shady's darkfield, Razsolo!!
Is that Tinya phasing thru Jeckie's cape??
She looks kinda pink.
Thanks rhino...re Tinya, I wasn't sure whether I should make her a little transparent or not, because it's not always a consistent effect in the comic, but I thought if I just put the glow around her with nothing else, it might not be obvious that she's phasing..
That's a wicked oool picture!
I love the light-on-dark mashup of Shady and Mysa, with Shady serving as the backdrop for Mysa. The way Shady seems to be emerging from her own darkness, she looks predatory, almost like a shark lunging out of the dark water.
Lu's capes look awesome. She's always been depicted with pretty boring capes, but you've put some flair into them!
Yera's shapeshifting is nicely captured.
Love Ayla's pose, and Imra's as well.
Dawny's wings look like real bird wings, with the shape and texture. I think, for all that it's a less detailed sort of picture than we see in the comics (usually), you have done a better job than most of making her wings look like living moving structures, and not stiff and lifeless.
I even like the perspective on Supergirl, all face forward and trailing back.
Very cool!
Really nice!
I love the loose, playfulness of the style.
Yaoi Legion by Ben Dunn.
As a thank you for all the positive comments on his Legion art, Daniel HDR asked the Legion World Facebookers to choose 5 Legionnaires for him to render in a sketch!!
I like! Not often we get to see Chuck in an action shot in his normal form (because most artists are scared to draw an overweight guy?)
It's an interesting team too! They have a good diversity of power/skills between them, Chuck and Tenzil's sense of humor would balance Dreamy and Dawny's lack of same, and nice to see a team where Gim is the muscle and not just a big slow target..
