1772 - The Watauga Association (sometimes referred to as the Republic of Watauga) was created. Although it lasted only a few years, the Watauga Association provided a basis for what later developed into the state of Tennessee and likely influenced other western frontier governments in the trans-Appalachian region.

While there is no evidence that the Watauga Association ever claimed to be outside the sovereign territory of the British Crown, historians have often cited the Association as the earliest attempt by American-born colonists to form an independent democratic government.

Honestly, these are starting to get boring! lol The world is less interesting as it goes backwards thru time! wink
^ I'm sure it seems boring because we are far removed from the actual events.

Personally, I find this interesting:

1712 -- Sweden, apparently not happy with the Gregorian Calendar, reverts to the Julian Calendar by adding February 30.

If Sweden's reversion to the Julian calendar (temporary, as it turned out) had caught on, we would all be celebrating our birthdays about 13 days earlier.

1707- The Acts of Union take effect, joining the Kingdom of Scotland and the Kingdom of England together as the Kingdom of Great Britain.
1706 - Death of Tsangyang Gyatso, the Sixth Dalai Lama. He was an "improper" one, enjoying women and drinking. He was deposed in 1705.

He wrote poetry which is still being recited today in Tibet.
^^ So much for history being boring. smile

1705 - (from Wikipedia): "The Shogunate confiscates the property of a merchant in Osaka "for conduct unbecoming a member of the commercial class". The government seizes 50 pairs of gold screens, 360 carpets, several mansions, 48 granaries and warehouses scattered around the country and hundreds of thoudands of gold pieces."

Can't have those pesky merchants acting like they're rich or something!
"Several" mansions? How wonderfully opulent!

1704 - Sabah is "given" to the Sultan of Sulu for his help in stopping the Brunei civil war. Currently, Sabah is a state in Malaysia, and contains such landmarks as Mount Kinabalu (my uncle almost passed out from oxygen deprivation there) and Sipadan (fantastic dive spot; Shark Lad would be at home here)

I use Brainy history too, to identify events, but then I always end up doing further research to find out WHY the event was significant.

Brainy history also occasionally has errors, such as with the entry below - it says Eton College was founded in 1441, but other sources say Eton was founded in 1440.

1441 - King's College, Cambridge, founded by Henry VI. "King Henry founded the College to advance education, religion, learning, and what we now in a later age call research." It was meant as a sister college to Eton, but lack of funds stalled its development until 1508, when King Henry VII began to take an interest.

The economies of several areas in southwestern China were disrupted, and many tribal allies of the Ming Dynasty were disgusted at how wasteful and inept the Ming army was. In the years to come, several tribal uprisings would occur.

The Ming would favor diplomacy over warfare in the years to come.

In 1091, a tornado strikes the heart of London, demolishing the then wooden London Bridge. Thankfully, despite the strength of the tornado and the amount of damage caused, only 2 were killed.

It's a little known fact that, due to dwindling populations, early Londinium was constructed entirely from Balsa wood. This enabled the inhabitants to carry their homes with them, if there was a better proposition elsewhere. It's where the phrase "up sticks" comes from as people would be seen carrying the rafter of their homes across the countryside. It's also why the tornado was seemingly so devastating. It was really a fairly minor tornado.

"Take any 3-digit number, say, 732 and write it backwards: 237. Subtract the smaller of the two numbers (237 in our case) from the larger (732). With our selection, we obtain the number 495. Write this one backwards too and compute the sum: 495 + 594. Here comes the surprise: regardless of your original selection, the final result will always be 1089!"
