They're a bit thrifty with item description considering their OPENING price is two bucks an issue for this auction.
Posted By: Greybird Re: The Legion of Daffy eBay Lots! - 01/04/04 08:33 AM
It's not a good idea to buy anything from ANYONE with a feedback rating of zero.

The way to get a handle on how eBay works is to first build up a few dozen positive ratings from successful purchases. Then you know enough to avoid, as a seller, creating such utterly vague listings as this one. You've then been through the wringer with their shortcomings already, and are less likely to inflict them on others.
Posted By: Fat Cramer Re: The Legion of Daffy eBay Lots! - 01/04/04 08:39 AM
They might even be cheaper - it says "at least 100" books - could be 101, maybe even 102...

Of course, the lot could comprise 20 copies of Space Circus, 30 of the ProFem story and 50 of the Bizarro Legion.
Posted By: Lightning Lad Re: The Legion of Daffy eBay Lots! - 01/04/04 08:42 AM
Exactly. Way too little on the description and not enough on the feedback. And the new seller notification isn't there so this seller has been around for at least 30 days.

I'm with Grey. They need to build up some feedback with purchases first then try selling. And try being more descriptive. If it isn't worth your time to catalog what you are selling then it isn't worth my time or money to bid.

"They must be outta their ****in' minds!" I bought that book a couple of years ago, i think it was. And while i love it, it wasn't that good, or that rare.

However, maybe i should put my BoP #8 up for sale. I hear some places are askin' $75 for it.

Superboy #212, CGC grade copy at 9.4, is worth $25. A 9.4, non-CGC graded, is worth $12. Anyone who doesn't do their own research before falling victim to eBay sellers like this deserve the item they purchase.

The monetary value of this comic (or any comic, or anything) is whatever someone will pay for it. I ain't holding my breath for ol' niceprice$ though.

What's a trip is, the stuff he has would likely sell-- but in small same-issue sets, with nice affordable opening bids of $4.99 or such, depending on the size of each lot.

Sure, it would be more effort, but he's a lot more likely to make his $200 (or more) that way, with several seperate lots.

Well a 9.4 CGC graded copy of Adv. #247 is currently priced at $45,000.00. But a regular, ungraded, mint condition copy is only worth $9,750.00.
And we\'re back to vague!

How could you Digitally recolor a vintage poster? Unless you scanned it and then printed it on a large format color printer.

I have never heard of this before. Although I do know that here in the UK we used to get a thing called double double comics which would bind together "american" comics (from marvel and dc) in a new cover.

Adventure Comics # 247 Unique variant cover

So is this for real or just clever marketing? And if so is it a good price?
Posted By: minesurfer Re: The Legion of Daffy eBay Lots! - 02/28/06 03:02 PM
I'm no expert... but it smells hinky to me... and I'll tell you why. He says he has something that should be worth a lot, but it sounds like he doesn't even know the facts behind it.

For instance, the description states, "The covers include Red Circle Comics 4, Blue circle 5, & Blazing Comics 5,6 All printed in 1945." But the first appearance of the LOSH (as stated here ) wasn't until 1958.

I don't know if that's clever marketing or not. If you look at the sticker on the PGX comic, it says "DC 4/58", which I'm assuming at this point is the publisher, month, year of the comic.

Now it could be that he made an honest mistake in the description and that the book is really worth the over $300 price it is at right now. I don't know.

What I do know is that I wouldn't pay that much money for that comic when I could pick up the DC Legion Hardcover Archives (which has this comic reprinted along with several other early appearances) brand new for $50 or less.

Other than that, it sounds like a legit first appearance variant cover. The seller has a pretty good feedback rating so I'd be inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt.

FYI... if you go here you will see that a CGC 5.0 Adventure 247 sold for $1,200 (although I don't know when it sold). So by the reasoning of the description, this variant cover should be worth in the $600 range.

Maybe someone with actual expertise can add a little more to this than I can though.

Elmo\'s Junction: A Golden Age Oddity

Quote
For anyone who thinks variant-type comic books are something relatively new, think again. Comic book variants have been around since at least the time when DC Comics (then, National) stuck a fifteen cent sticker over the original price of the 1940 World's Fair comic and re-released it for sale.

What I think was one of the most interesting variants ever published was Red Circle No.4 (pictured above). Red Circle was published by Rural Home Publications (also known as Enwil Publications) from January to April of 1945, producing four issues. Each issue in the series contained stories about such characters as "The Pranster", "The Judge", or "Red Riot". But obviously, sometime in the early 1950's, this company discovered they had a LOT of left-over covers around for the 4th. issue. So they re-released the comic, but this time they put all of these covers on some OTHER comic!

Now, other companies had re-released remainer issues before, most notable Fawcett with their Gift Comics in which they bound together various comics with a cover and re-sold them, and even EC did that with a title or two, but each time they'd created a new cover , AND, they'd used their own publications. Enwil wasn't so picky.

They'd just used ANY coverless remainer comics they could find (or maybe even removed the original covers just so they could have coverless books) and reattached their OWN cover back on it. So finding a copy of Red Circle No.4(cover date April,1945) could have just about ANYTHING within it from the early 1950's.

Some of the variations that are known are: Woman Outlaws(published by Fox), Dorothy Lamour (also by Fox), Crime Does Not Pay (Lev Gleason Pub.s), Sabu (Fox as well), Diary Loves (Quality Comics), Love Confessions (also Quality), Young Love (Prize Publications), as well as the above book (that is from my personal collection) which contains Strange Adventures #24 (from 1952, and is a National/DC Comic).

I would'nt call the number of variations endless, but there are literally thousands of different variations of the interior of this particular comic!
So bascially it is probably an original, remainder, issue of Adv. #247 that had its original cover stripped and this company tossed on one of their extra covers from a book from the 40's. Worth it? To me only if you have an original cover to #247 to make a true issue.

What would you say this Dan Jurgens art is worth?

[Linked Image]

It's specifically described in the eBay listing as: "Nice art." That's it. The whole set of details. Nothing about condition.

The sellers want $5,800. Fixed "buy it now" price, no dickering or auction.

Even though this is the best cover from my favorite Dawnstar story, and even if I'd won this week's Mega Millions jackpot, I wouldn't shell out one-tenth that price for it. I've seen signed Giffen original-art boards go for one-tenth that price, and he did fewer of Dawny than Jurgens did.

Crazy, mon!

Ah, but just think what it will be worth in 3008. Your great great great etc. grandchildren will thank you!

With the anniversary next year, I wonder if Legion material prices in general are going to inflate. Or if people will try to boost the prices.

those look like the feebie posters that all retailers would get week-in, week-out.

Cool. No photo and 6 bucks for shipping. Who wouldn't want to buy this little gem... smile

The only thing daffy about this one is the price, although it is respectable, just too high for me. Great adaption of the cover to X-Men #141 by Bob Layton. Thanks to Michael at the Omnicom for finding this one.

Intergalactic Vigilante Squadron?

I'm not going to buy it but I'm dying to know what that blurb means.

The Overstreet price guide has a history of erroneous listings for various "try-out" first appearances, particularly early SA Marvels. Sounds like this seller is trying to capitalize on something like that. The fact that he offers books graded by PGX and lists himself as an Overstreet advisor... pffft. Don't sweat the hype, Art. wink

By the way, in that Legion Checklist, all the links that point to online versions of the stories that were from the superman.ws site are now bad. That domain got moved to supermanthrutheages.com several months ago, but now, even that site has been shut down, apparently permanently (see DC message boards ).

Thanks! I'll delete the links then.

Calling Dr. Mayavale. DoctorMayavale

Actually, I don't find the auction listing itself "daffy", Scooter. It is the best page of art from that issue... (Ditko interior work... lol shake

IMO, the sheer fact that it's Mayavale classifies it as daffy. But then you know how I feel about those kind of characters. wink
