I seem to remember an archive on the Dave Cockrum/Mike Grell period of the Legion. Was it a dream?,if so , then DC had better get off it's duff and print it...This was in my opinion, the best period of the Legion, followed closely by "the Great Darkness Saga"...

Dave's run was neatly collected in Volume 11 of the archives, and they started on Grell's run (While inexplicably using Dave's art on the cover!) with #12.

Seeing as most of the issues yet to be collected are still very affordable, maybe DC is hesitant to put them out as a $50 hardcover just yet.

Are you talking about those $50 hardcover-bound books?

Cockrum's in one, Grell's in another (Volumes 10 and 11 I think). The split occurs with Superboy 202 (Cockrum's pencils, Grell's ink)

Grell/Cockrum was the period of the legion I most enjoyed, too.

The Cockrum book was very memorable. Not only did it, by whatever luck, contain Dave's entire run in a single volume, it was also, by whatever luck, the 1st one where PRINTING errors crept in that were so bad about 1/3rd of the pages looked TERRIBLE.

But DC was decent about it. The did a 2nd printing and allowed buyers to trade in their defective 1st printings for it at no cost. I DID!!

Actually, Dave's was #10. #11 and #12 feature for the most part Grell's run. smile

D'oh! Thanks for the correction, G. I haven't bought 12, and was thinking of 10 and 11. shake
No worries.

I actually have two #10's. The one with the printing errors and the one without (There's not really that big a difference).
any idea when Archive 13 will be released ???

Matthew.

Wasn't there also a printing error in volume 12? I think that's why I put off getting it...

Sounds like you've gotten used to how MARVEL MASTERWORKS (and any reprints from Marvel Comics) tend to look.

Could be.

I recall Paul Levitz saying in Baltimore that they were considering cutting back to a Legion Archive every other year instead of annually. But he didn't say when he wanted to start that.

They already have. Volume 11 came out in 2001, Volume 12 in 2003, and Volume 13 will likely be this year. If not, it'll be more than an every other year schedule.

And anyone who pays $50 for an archive in this day and age is either a)crazy or b)lazy. They're always at least 30% off online, usually with free shipping.

Depends in which country you are... wink
The Archives *should* be a great purchase, but unfortunately, they continually end up being full of printing errors and coloring mishaps. I got into great debates at the DC message board Archives section with people because of my typical Legion fan analytical review of the coloring of the most recent (Grell) edition. There were lots of little mistakes, like the way they colored Karate Kid's costume, but then there'd be big mistakes like coloring Lightning Lad with green skin. I just wondered what the f*ck was up! I emailed the editor in charge, and he said that the last colorist was fired. I offered to be a consultant on any future editions being done, and the editor said he'd keep that in mind. I have no idea what's next for Legion Archive Editions.

Personally, I hope they continue to produce them until they catch up with recent continuity. I would buy them. Even though you can find back issues at a reasonable price, a hard back volume full of Legion stories is a worthy investment.

I love having all of them, so far, and I will obviously be a future consumer.

I've always wondered something about the Archives and here seems as good a place as any to ask.

How "complete" are they? I mean - if I buy say Archives 1 - 10 will I be getting all the Legion stories of that time period or have certain Legion stories been left out? I'm not too worried if some one or two panel appearances in some other title have been excluded but what about more important/significant appearances?

I ask because I've been chugging along buying individual issues of Adventure Comics and its starting to become mucho expensive so I'm thinking of switching to the Archives.

I'm also concerned about the colouring errors discussed in this thread. Do they detract from the books? And are there any other mistakes/problems with them that I should know about?

Thanks.

P.S. If some stories or appearances have been left out (even the minor ones) would it be possible to get a list of them here so that I could maybe track them down?

Thanks again.
I've got all of them, and consider them to be a great collecting option. I have always been under the impression that they are complete (not AR complete, but complete in the main titles in which they appeared). I personally can live with the minor errors, but I understand how some might be frustrated with such obvious screw ups. #13 might bring me perilously close to having a complete Legion run...an objective I've always wanted, but I like knowing that there are a few stories out there I haven't read yet, so completing my collection will mark the end of a fifteen year quest. Closure isn't always all it's cracked up to be...

OH, I KNOW!!!!!

Every time I look at the top shelf on my bedroom wall, crammed entirely with DC ARCHIVES, all of which were bought at my comics shop THRU the Diamond catalog, it's hurts to think of how many of them I could have gotten for FREE with the money save if I'd bought them almost anywhere else.

These days, when new ARCHIVES or MASTERWORKS are anounced, I make a note of them, add them to my "wanted" list and get them elsewhere, when I get the urge...
i'd love them to produce ARCHIVE's up to at least the end of "LSH" V2 [ before the BAXTER reprints started !!! ] i'd buy them laugh even though, the issue are pretty cheap, and i own them all anyway ...

Matthew.
with regards to to the more "modern" issues, DC produced 2 "New Teen Titans" Archives !!?? these must be easier to get hold of than the issues that would appear in 13, 14 and 15 of the LEGION ones ???

Matthew.

How many other comics received 12 Archive editions? I'm thinking that Legion is one of the few, which really says something about its long-term fan-base.
what number are the "JLA" ones up to ??

they must be quite high ....

Matthew.
I think JLA's up to 8 Archives now. Maybe 9.
JLA's at 9, All-Star is next closest at 11 (in Feb.).
All-Star #11 will wind up the Golden Age JSA run. I don't know if they'll archive the '70s relaunch after that or not. At any rate, it won't catch up to Legion.
