Ugh! That top one is HORRIBLE! Not to mention inaccurate. Who drew that drek?
I'll say Lost, but I'm not crazy about any of them.
Actually kinda difficult to find any really decent covers with her in the spotlight.
I'm always amazed when there's a LSH cover I haven't seen.
Somehow or other I've never seen the digest cover.
I like the perspective and as it's new to me, it's exciting.
DIGEST.
Like Jim, I'm not crazy about any of them. My pick though is Legion 49

DIGEST.
I actually own the Digest one.
I think the digest cover artist is Pat Broderick.
My pick is Perez L3W
WOW. that first one is so over the top ......
i'm almost going to pick it. that is shocking, thanks Dev.
I pick Perez LO3W.
love these covers, but i also love coipel's early work especially his covers.
I've never seen the digest, and I'm picking it, if only because it's the only one without her standing around with her hands to her head.
Seriously, can you not come up with any other visual to represent telepathy?

Another reason I chose it!
Looking at the digest again, I was pretty sure the artist was Patrick Brodrick. And in looking it up, I came across
Comic Book DB . They confirm that the cover was done by Mr. Brodrick.
3boot #49 for me. It's odd - in a good way. The contrasting colors also appeal to me.
Three worlds for me. Love that cover.
That Blue Ribbon issue is new to me too and I'm tempted to vote for it just for that reason (as well as being all around hilarious) but Lost and Lo3W are my favourites here. I really like both of them.
Hmmm... I'll throw Coipel a vote since I think Perez is gonna win this one.
Threeboot 49. I like the use of colors.
Although that blue ribbon Best of cover sure is funky, and new to me also.
i like Legion Lost 9....because its cool...effect there.
LSH 49... that Projectra's the best illusion-caster of any of the versions. And I like the use of color, too.
Though everyone's right about the overuse of the hands-at-head pose. I'm pretty sick of it, as well.
I pick the digest. It's totally crackers!!
Perez's Lo3Ws.
Because this is my favorite verion of Imra, just beating out the Lost version.
Psychlock(sp) has a beautiful effect with the purple/pink mask behind her head. Or rather, she had it before she was changed to the Asian version. I don't remember for sure if that version has that effect.
I own that digest as well.
But I have to go with Perez and Lo3W with this set. The covers of the other three don't do Imra any justice.
Threeboot for me (despite the wretched interiors)...
It was between Lost and Legion #49 for me, picked #49 because I liked the contrasting covers and the nice sense of conflict.
Have to say the hands to the head pose never really bothered me, but after seeing it on 3 out of 4 covers I'm ready to take a knife to those covers. That is obnoxious.
Coipel. It's the most original and mysterious of the four.
Okay then,,,
Digest = 3
Lost = 7
3Boot = 7
Lo3W = 13
Not rally a surorise, actually more even than I would have thought though.

a big change from the Cosmic Boy covers!
OH BOY 57!!!
I'm having a Magic Wars-esque fit of excitement.
such a great story on the inside too.
#25 is a great cover (and it's got floating heads! they always rock!) but it's more of a Sensor Girl cover than an EE one.
But even so, #57 is fab. So that one gets my vote too.
wow...landslide so far...
Hate to follow the crowd, but 57 is exceptional!
I'll be the square peg. #25 for me.
I'm gong with the Tales of The Legion cover.
57. I don't remember it AT ALL, but it rocks.
I don't remember it either, but 57 for me, too.
25 for me.
57 is a neat picture, but I have no idea who half of those people are. I recognize Tellus and Jacques, but the dude wearing the fur mantle with the bear-paws hanging off of it is a mystery to me, as is the chick in the middle with the Emerald Eye in her chest and the skull tattoo on her face.
57 *sigh * the best death story ever on the female villainness....Emerald Empress.

the one with fur is Timber Wolf...yeah..believe it or not.
the one above Jacques is Blok, as you can see the spike on his shoulder.
The chick is Emerald Empress with a new look.
the one cut off at lower right corner - I cannot remember but think it may be Polar Boy or Magnetic Kid... ???
I prefer #25 as well. It's more dramatic and really captured the whole "who is Sensor Girl?" mystery of that time.
25 as well. I remember getting that book and being so excited to find out who Sensor Girl was!
#25 for me.
#57 is cool but in the end I think all the green drowns out the details so the effect is lessened.
25
I really like 57 as well, but I had no idea who Sensor Girl could be at the time, so this was a big issue.
Gonna stop the bleeding stat.
Tales = 2
57 = 14
25 = 7
Throw him a bone and vote. It'll be a ruff one!
Yeah, I know the last one is not really a Legion related issue...but I love it.
My all-time fave Krypto cover, Superman #680, isn't here, so I'll go with LSH #2, even though the dog isn't front and center.
A word about some of these. At times, like this one...I chose the first three I could find. There will be other challengers with the winners of several of these face offs...with several of the covers brought up. There are times where I specifically choose the covers for reasons of my own...muahahahahahahahaha!!
I'll go with Legion of Superheroes #2 because Krypto is with his master.
Originally posted by Quislet, Esq.:

Ditto.
Superman #697. The Conner/Krypto relationship was one of the best things to come from the recent Johns/Robinson tenures on the Superman titles and the new Adventure.
I was expecting to see that Alex Ross one (was that Superman #680?) here but I guess it would have romped home with the victory so I can see why it wasn't included.
I'll vote LSH #2. The last one has Krypto looking too much like one of Lobo's angry bulldogs to me and the second one would be better without Mon-el (and his dopey costume) on it - he makes it look cluttered IMO.
Superman #697.
Possibly, my all time favorite cover, in the world.
LSH #2, The boy of steel and his dog.
697
Krypto looks more like a fox or a rabbit on the LSH one.
Not fond of any of these. The first cover says "LSH" but only Superboy and Krypto are featured! The second one features Conner, a character I've never cared for, and the third one (sorry, folks) looks silly to me: a rabid Krypto? That's what we need.
I'll go with the second one because it at least features Mon-El. The artwork is also more natural and the colors warm and pleasing. (As a bonus, I just read most of Lo3W, and it's the first time I've liked Conner.)
697
Krypto looks too small on the LSH cover, and Superboy looks like he has no internal organs.
I think McGuiness's cover's pretty bad-ass, personally. Maybe it's not the character's essence, but it certainly says, "don't piss off Krypto!" So 170 for me!
697... even though Mon looks like a tool in that costume
697. It's warm and fuzzy. I like it.
This one is pretty hard for me.
170-- what a terrifying cover. Can anyone spoil what happens within? I agree with CeeTee that it's badass.
697 is very sweet and just screams "Fall weather" to me, which I really like.
2-- Krypto and Superboy look so happy!
So it's down to the basics: Am I feeling badass, comforted by the arrival of fall weather, or happy feel-good?
For the record, I think all 3 covers do their jobs very well... they make me want to see what is happening inside.
But for my pick here, the arrival of fall trumps:
697 for the win!
Krypto gets his due...
LSH #2 = 8
Superman #697 = 11
Superman #170 = 1
I like the appearance of the Time Trapper in the Legionnaires 3 cover. There are no Legionnaires in the LSH cover.
I am picking Legionnaires #61. I like the composition better than the Legionnaires 3 cover. And it features more Legionnaires.
Geez Dev, Love the choices they are tough sometimes. but LSH #5 barely beats Legionnaies 61.
61 is a lot of fun.
but #5's composition and moodiness is just magnificent.
#5.
I'll echo Kent's sentiments regarding #5. It's also rather understated, which works in its favor.
But #61 stands out to me more for some reason, maybe because of the wacky vibe, so I'm going with it.
#61.
Legionnaires #61 for me too, hands down.
Legionnaires 3, #3. The fact that Garth is being physically separated from the other two (which was a plot point in the mini-series IIRC) and the sensation of unbalancing is what makes it for me.
The other two are nice, though.
I abstain. I don't like any of them.
LSH#5 is one of the more mysterious covers in LSH history IMO. I've never read that issue but I know(think) that something pretty weird and epic must happen in it for it to have a cover that departs so far from the norm like that.
So I vote for that one.
I can't imagine not finding anything to like at all about these covers... (but I found that true from the very first time someone abstained from a face-off on those grounds)
L3 3 is cool and stylistic.
5 is SO moody and atmospheric, I adore it.
But 61 POPS. It pops and ROCKS. It's pop-rocks.
61 for the win!
Nice days of our lives ref.
61, for me.
5 is nice and evocative, but lacks anything that makes it feel 'Legion-y.' It could just as easily be a Sandman Mystery Theatre cover.
All excellent but 5 for me
I love all 3.
#61 is my favorite of the 2 with Legionnaires.
But, I'm going to have to go with #5.
That's the Mordruverse issue, the result of Mon-el's destruction of the Time Trapper.
This is one of my all time favorite stories in any of the DC universes.
Gorgeous, inside and out.
#5 also. It's got a classic look, and I loved that issue through and through.
All wonderful covers. I'll go with 61, though, as it really stands out.
LSH #5
Changes were a'coming, but we didn't know just what they would be.
this one is really tough, i thought 5 for sure ....
(i was scrolling UP and thought 5 surely couldn't be beat by the whatever was the first choice.)
but i'm actually going with Legionnaires #3.
and i dont even like the founders. and 5 is one of my favorite stories.
btw i missed the previous one (bad power boy!) but i wouldve gone with LSH #2 .... that super boy just looks too delicious.
My vote goes to Legionnaires 3. For some reason or other I just like it.
#61 is technically the most attractive, but it says something that #5 was the only one of the three I immediately recognized even though I own all three issues. The story inside is extraordinary, and the cover is terrifically evocative of its contents.
Definitely #5.
Another thing about #5 - is it the only cover in Legion history to not feature a single character on it?
That's what stands out to me about it. I'm so used to seeing anywhere from 1 to more than two dozen characters on a Legion cover that this one immediately seems special to me.
New one will go up tomorrow.

Though I stand by my vote for 61, I love the point you make here.
The contents of # 5 are unforgettable. I cannot describe the contents of Legionnaires 3 or Legionnaires 61.
Very telling.

That's one of the reasons I DON'T like it.
I vote #5 - I also agree with Blacula that I think what makes it stand out so much is that it DOESN'T have any characters on it, it's purely a mood piece.

didn't one of the early DNAs not have characters? LSH 125, perhaps? Just the destruction of the HQ into the anomaly.

well....how soon will we see that new one?
#61 is where different Legion boots come together.
I especially remember it because in one of the story arc issues, this one, I think, Legions were shown that we hadn't seen before.
Including having another Sneckie, one with a hood and fangs like a cobra.
That was my major problem with Sneckie, she was a garden snake type and not colorful at all.
But I understand the point.
Comparatively, storywise there IS no comparison.
#5 is a super story.

Alrighty. Great reasons for the votes.
Legionnaires #3 - 4
LSH #5 - 14
Legionnaires #61 - 10
The voting was really close for a while, but 5 pulled ahead.
Hmmm...between L.E.G.I.O.N. and Secret Origins for me.
I guess L.E.G.I.O.N., but it's close.
The Secret Origins cover is a hark back to the Silver Age and shows her power in use. But I'm just not liking it. I want to, but I'm not. I don't know who the artist is, but I think if a different artist had done this, say Jeff Moy or Alan Davis, I'd love it.
The Legionnaires cover suffers from the white out effect. But it otherwise a beautiful drawing of Phantom Girl. I always like Moy's artwork.
The L.E.G.I.O.N. cover is OK. It has a nice drawing of Phantom Girl. It suffers from bad background coloring and a really bad drawing of Lobo.
My vote goes to Legionnaires.
Secret Origins is Dick Giordano. It has a Cockrum feel. I like it a lot. It gets my vote.
Legionnaires has my favorite PG look, plus a really striking pose and special effect.
Secret Origins is also nice, but-- ugh!-- just thinking about Lobo gives me hives. Which is too bad, because the
L.E.G.I.O.N. cover would be pretty cool otherwise.
Legionnaires, it is.
Well for once no debate for me Legionnaires 64
Honestly I'm not crazy about any of them.
The L.E.G.I.O.N. cover suffers from Lobo plus the fact that her legs are long enough to make Barbie jealous.
The Legionnaires cover is basically her just reacting to the massively burst of whiteness that's dominating the cover. Love that outfit, however.
And, well, I'm not quite sure what bugs me about the SO cover, but there's definitely something that doesn't feel right about it. It may just be the mesh of Silver Age with Bronze Age sensibilities which is a bit jarring.
I'll go with the SO cover, hesitatingly.
I'll take L.E.G.I.O.N.'89.
Love the outfit. Love the background colors.
Tinya's had consistently nice costumes, hasn't she? She's practically a female Star Boy.
I vote for Legionnaires too. But is that funky moiré effect part of the original cover or is that because of the scan?
P.S. The SO one is a nod to her panel in the Origin and Powers of the Legion feature from Adv. days.
Tinya "pops" in!! L.E.G.I.O.N. 89 for the win!
One of the finest, most fun reads available in comics. It (and the first run of R.E.B.E.L.S.) puts the current REBELS to shame.
The Secret Origins cover almost has a Cockrum look, a little bit? The flashlight effect detracts from Tinya's image on LEGIONNAIRES, but I do think both are nice efforts.
i vote: Legionnaires #64...our Phantom Girl in action!
Legionnaires #64 for me. That's my favourite of Tinya's costumes too. And she's had a lot of good ones (except the current one which, though not as bad as say, Tyroc's, suffers from being a pale imitation of her classic 70s one).
I like the exciting white-out effect too. And I think Moy is a vastly under-appreciated Legion artist. I really loved his stuff.
The others are both just 'lacking' in some ways that I can't quite put my finger on.
Secret Origins.
I want to like 64, but it's painful to look at, with all the white.
I like all of them, but I really loved Tinya as Phase.
I also love all of the dotLEGION characters.
So, dotLEGION 89, for me.
Legionnaires exciting and dynamic in a way the other two just aren't
Legionnaires 64
But that SO cover is a very close second.
L.E.G.I.O.N.
'89
phantoms!
who gets credit for the cover? it might be giffen but it looks more like al milgrom (maybe the inks are him) or kevin maguire
.LEGION 89?
That's Kitson, isn't it?
According to the Grand Comic Book Datatbase the L.E.G.I.O.N. 89 cover is Maguire with inks by Milgrom.
Kevin Maguire drew most of the early dotLEGION 89 covers.
Okay, but it looks to me like he was channeling Kitson.
Can one do that when the channelee is still kicking?
I actually rather like the Secret Origins cover.
I'm ready for some new covers, please!
Sorry.
Been really busy this week.
Secret Origins - 5
Legionnnaires 15
L.E.G.I.O.N. - 6
Pretty decisive win for Legionnaires.
I do like 17 but ...
28 really does it for me by far.
it's a landslide inside the brain of Power Boy.
I enjoy all these, but Tales is the most dynamic. So, a win for #315.
Tales is the only one where Dirk is using his power, but I just don't like it. #296 is really good, but is ruined for me by the floating heads. It makes it seem like the picture is cut off. #28 doesn't do anything for me.
My vote goes for #17. I find it simple and clean and conveys a feeling of purpose.
#296 for me. Tough one. All four are good.
Ooh! Some excellent choices. I'll choose #17 but it just beats 296 by a nose.
Would've loved to vote for the one with Supergirl on it but . . . No.
Baxter #17 and 5YL #28 are streets ahead of the competition in this one IMO. (Not that the other two are bad, these two are just very, very good.)
Part of me so wants to say #17 but while I love that it's a homage, #28 is a wholly original composition and much more powerful for it.
So I vote #28.
All of these covers have the striking disadvantage of featuring Sun Boy, never a favorite of mine.
Outside of that, they're all nice in their own way but #28 is the one that really stands out for me. So, it.
Something else else that's always bugged me about #296 - shouldn't it be Rokk there holding the body? Since it was his family that got killed that issue and all?
But Rokk wasn't there when the attack happened, Blacula. That was part of the build-up to "Mettle." His teammates knew the bad news before he did.
296.
315 and 17 are also good, but 296 is my fave. Great story, and a good cover that suggests the events within without spoiling them (since we have no idea who that is he's holding until we open the book).
17 is slightly spoiled for me by the strange expression / stance that Chameleon Boy is displaying. He looks like he's stamping his little foot in a fit of pique or something...
315 has the action, which is cool, and Supergirl, also cool.
28 has, uh, some red-headed dude with a mullet holding Sun Boy's costume. I vaguely recall some storyline in another continuity where Sun Boy turns against the Legion and eventually dies, so I guess this is someone mourning him? Devlin O'Ryan, perhaps? He had red hair, IIRC, although I don't recall if he had a mullet.
Sometimes, when you take a wrong turn(s), there's just the consequences to face and the grief.
I just wish we'd actually seen more of it.
We can go back and see where his mental health might have been undermined over the years, but the gap was too far to go, imo.
That said, I still vote for that cover, because it shows the only true and complex emotion that I ever remember seeing from the original Dirk.
Originally posted by cleome:

Good memory cleome. I'd forgotten that. Still seems like Rokk should have had some mention on this cover though. I love me some floating heads on a cover but maybe Giffen should have swapped them for a downcast Rokk or something.
Blacula - The thing that bugas you about the cover, is the very thing that I like about it. To me, it shows that the Legion were like a family and cared for all of thrit extended families like their own.
It's also one cover/story that gave Dirk something more than being the ladies man of the team.
28. The sizzling story of Sun Boy was steak AND sizzle, the cover conveyed the darkness within perfectly.
Shadycandle, you didn't specify which cover you are voting for. Based on your statement, I would guess TMK/Pearson's cover for LSH 28.

The artwork on the interior of this comic is unbelievable. The true nightmarish quality that Pearson was able to achieve with floating smiles that were too big, masks, and the fade outs...wow/

That is Sun Boy holding his own costume.
SLSH 287(?) with Sun Boy and Dr. Regulus would've been a nice addition to this group too.
I like #296 muchly, but
#28 conveys the angst, isolation, and despair that I enjoy so.
I have to vote #296 with this choice.
Definitely #28! none of the others even come close. Even without including the amazing story within, it's still the winner.

Yes.
I can't see the numbers very well today, for some reason and every time I 'guess' an artist I'm wrong, so I went with content description, as best that I could.
sigh
I hate to hear your vision might be troubling you... Does your computer have the option to increase screen size? I keep mine at 150% so I don't have to wear my glasses online. It helps a LOT.
I have to pick #17. I actually used that as my background for awhile.
296, 28? gotta go with 296.
#315, in honor of the late Chief Zendak.

And thank goodness for that feature.

I seem to be using that feature alot lately ...... hmmm
this whole aging thing is not working out. i want to break up with age.
I'm starting to think a LOT of you are having trouble with your vision considering how you've been voting!
ZING! Good one, Jim!
Did not really expect this one...
296 - 7
315 - 2
17 - 5
28 - 12
Didn't expect so much love for the Pearson cover...although my favorite of the group as well.
Let's go with the top two this time.
Voting until Friday night. Then we'll have a 48 hour vote off between them.
LSH
Baxter
Legionnaires
Legends
Threeboot
JSA
I go for Legion of Superheroes #306 a classic cover.
Then I pick Legionnaires #73. I do like this costume. And I like word ballons on covers.
I'll take #306 and v5 #2.
oh snap. lotta good ones.
306

narrowly defeats the creepy serial killer cover of JSA
2 is not bad either.

LSH and Threeboot for the win
Baxter 28 and Threeboot 2, for me. Two very different Star Boys.
Originally posted by Dev Em:

Whacky. I honestly didn't realize that was supposed to be Sun Boy. I thought it was some other dude mourning Sun Boy, and not Sun Boy inexplicably mourning himself...
I suppose reading the story makes all the difference on that one!
v.5 #2 is a good concept but the blandy mcblanderson colouring kills it for me. And Thom just looks creepy on that JSA cover. Plus I hate that full head mask. Let the beard flow free Thom!
So my first vote definitely goes to #306. I'll be surprised if this one doesn't win the whole thing. It's so awesome.
My second vote is between #28 and #73. I *LOVE* reboot Star Boy's costume AND Jeff Moy's artwork AND word balloons on covers but Thom's awful hair here is distracting me. The memory of how awful that story was isn't helping either.
But I still think I slightly prefer it over #28 so my votes are for #306 and #73.
Always thought it was goofy that the fire elemental on that Legionnaires cover is casting a shadow. Hello? The fire should be the light source.
JSA and Threeboot
(306 was a close contender, though)
First vote: LSH 306, hands down. I love it that Thom's starfield costume blends in with space.
Second vote: Threeboot 2. Simply as a work of art, it's eye-catching, colorful, and intriguing.
Thanks for making things easier for me Dev (and any other here with occasional eye issues.)
I like all of the covers and love the Kitson Star Boy costume (like the Shady and Imra looks, too.) Barry is always quite good at designing things. Well, he's just phenominal as an artist, period.
The JSA cover is first pick for me, though.
Wonderfully creepy and great storytelling in one image.
The Baxter is second.
Love the action and the lighting.
The Legionnaires story is one of my favorite, though since Umbra used her powers in a number of interesting ways against Mordru and for the others.

Hmmm decisions decisions. Ok 306 doesnt need my vote it's getting much love so It's a shoo-in. #28 Does get my vote. Coin flip between JSA #2 and LSH #2. LSH # 2 it is. So my votes are LSH #28 and LSH #2. But my money is on LSH #306 and LSH #28.
Go Tinya
BAXTER and LEGENDS. Guess I'm in a Lightle-hearted mood.
Wow...306 get's lots of love as always...but soo close between 2nd and 3rd...gonna switch up the contest a little.
LSH 306 = 16
Legion 28 - 11
Legionnaires 73 - 2
Legends 4 - 1
3boot 2 - 10
JSA 2 - 6
Three way race to the finish....
LSH
Baxter
Threeboot
#306, easily....Woof!
one vote this time, I assume?
Threeboot (I do love 306, though)
306. Tough choice, but I gotta go with the original. Avoid imitations, reboots, clones, parallel universes, pocket universes, etc. etc.
Gotta go with Giffen when he was good on #306.
BAXTER/28. The "bent" logo, the color, it works for me.
Make no mistake: I LOVE KEITH GIFFEN'S ART.
But I don't care for Thom's "bowl" haircut.

28 for me. There's stuff going on. Action!
Three great artists. I'd love for any one of them to be working on the Legion now, but Giffen takes it.
#306
306 - I wish Giffen would draw like that again.
Threeboot for me, since I HAVE to choose from these 3 greats.
Baxter for me. Love the action and the lighting.
SHould have left 306 out.
306 = 13
28 - 3
2 - 4
Close between the next two again...maybe another run off later.
Put some thought into this one.
(Amazing that he is on a lot of covers, but not solo very often.)
Baxter

LEGIONNAIRES. I can't resist the all-blonde issue.
Legionnaires for me on this one!

Although I do like me some Brainy's Lucky Day, too.
i want to vote the Legion's Lost...but nope. well...
I vote....Baxter - Brainy's Lucky Day.
I don't know.
You can't even see his face on the Baxter cover.
I wish we had the LOST cover, too.
But, since we don't, is that Chris Sprouse as the artist on the reboot cover?
Is Legionnaires #8 the reboot?
I thought they were SW6.
No?
Oh, well.
Love Sprouse.
Love Kitson, too, but I hate Legion Prime and Vril the Legionnaire.
I'm going with the TMK era new/retroboot Brainy by Jim Lee.
Beautiful stuff.
ohh it causes me physical pain to vote against Jim Lee (and he actually makes Brainy's boots look okay), but I am going with the
Brainy's Lucky Day one. I feel that it has way more emotional impact than the others. (Is that the issue where Universo 'killed' Rond?)
The LO3W one just looks like he has a Kid Flash lollipop. Silly.
From worst to first -
5. Threeboot #1
4. SW6 #8
3. Lo3W #4
2. Retroboot #6
1. Baxter #30

You're right, the Sprouse was the SW6...sorry for any confusion.
Brainy's Lucky Day. No contest.
yes. it's a Baxter rally!!
I'll go with Brainy's Lucky Day as well. (Oddly enough, I can't remember what it was that had him so down. It was after Kara's death and before the Conspiracy fall-out...so what gives/gave?)
he somehow remembered or figured out Kara used to exist. maybe it was her birthday or something?
EDE will know.
i feel like it's an abstract mourning of pre crisis in general. (or that's just me.)
I'm not a fan of any of these, but I'll go with "Brainy's Lucky Day." It has the same appeal as TMK # 28, in which another Legionnaire is shown grieving against a plain black background. The notion that these heroes can be subject to human feelings such as grief is a powerful and subtle counterpoint to the way they are usually depicted on covers.

it was actually Rond's "death."
Brainy got off onto a bad spell w Kara's death (#16), and this fed his obsession that Sensor Girl was really Kara returned (#teens-through-24ish)
just as he was starting to bounce back with Dr. Chasseur, Rond seems to die (one of many preludes to Universo Project, 32-35).
Ah, yes...forgot about Rond's supposed death, there. Good show, Kent!
I like the newest one, the Legion #6 alternate by Lee. On a side note, I actually prefer it to the standard Legion #6 cover with Earthman getting out of bed...

Let's see if the votes split evenly on this one...
Tales (316)
Baxter (52)
5YL (13)
Just added issue numbers
Definitely between 13 and 52. Gotta think on this for a spell...
Awrighty, 52 because it has Ayla on it!
Vote Ayla, damnit!!!
#13, because it doesn't have Ayla on it.

Hey! Ain't none of these covers featured my bro Tyroc! Typical of whitey not to give him equal time!
legion 52 - since it was the trio that kind of represented the founder - Magnetic Kid for Cosmic Boy, Tellus rep for Saturn Girl, and Ayla s taking over Garth's.
Shady's on a couple of them and she was almost black (and supposed to be black!)
That should count for something.
It does with me, anyway.
I was going to vote for 5YL but then, I noticed Shady and the dying Mon.
THAT'S who she is, not this current imposter!
So, I vote for Baxter #52.
It's tempting to pick 52; there's a lot to like about it.
But 5YL is slightly better.... and it actually has Kent on the cover! even if not identifiably.
I don't really care for any of these.
I'm not super-crazy about any of these, so I have to search for shallow, trvial reasons to vote.
Tales/316 has COMET QUEEN on it--
So I vote for it
I pick Tales 316 because it features a rare Stone Boy cover appearance!!
I like covers that split up into different sections but for some reason I'm not really into any of these. I guess that makes this choice tougher than others because I don't have any strong feelings of like or dislike for any of them.
I think I'll go for #52 because Mon-el looks kinda hot on it (and no, I'm not talking about his first-degree burns).
Not a fan of any of them, but I'll pick Tales (316), 'cause it's got Laurel Kent, in that rockin' space-poncho, on it.
Plus Lydda, although the lack of bouffant is a major bummer.

Crumbs I was the only one that voted for the Threeboot!
How far from the norm have I strayed?
I don't like any of these myself, but for the sake of vote I'll say Baxter.
Tales (not only the best cover, but also the only one I've read out of the three).

I almost voted for that one for that reason too, Rhino, but the "villain" looks like he came out of a McDonald's happy meal, plus it's got that twit, Comet Queen, so I abstained.
I'm going with Tales, because Laurel Kent is on it.
Fifty two. BTW can someone please tell me if this is the Shady's Shotgun...Sorry, "Cut My Finger" wedding issue?
Not really a fan of any of those TBH but I'll say #52 due to those dinosaur-ish things on it.

I believe those are Braalian metal-monsters!
Tales 316. Like the cover, like the story.
5YL # 13. The black border creates a nice contrast to the colors in the panels, making them stand out. Also, I like it that only one of the panels (the Persuader one) has obvious action. The subdued nature of the other panels invite the reader in, to carefully pay attention to what is going on, rather than throwing multiple action scenes at you, as # 316 does. The images on # 52 are too fragmented for my tastes.

I'm not sure, but if it isn't, it's close.
And it wasn't a shotgun wedding.
Shady and Mon talked about getting married, specifically in the panels when they stayed behind for Mission Monitor Board duty during Garth's and Imra's wedding.
They both said that they'd get married someday.
It's one of the reasons the new developments are so annoying and unbelieveable to me, now.
That would be Chuck and Luornu's wedding that they stayed behind on.
Yeah, the new Shady developments suck pretty hard imo. I want to know exactly why she left Mon-El and she better have a damn good reason. What that reason could be I can't imagine though.
At this point, I'm pretty tired of hearing about how awful Shady is. I'd rather hear something from Mon-El's POV and maybe it's
him who ought to have a "damn good reason" for whatever happened.
I hear Levitz sometimes reads this board, so I'll say it as politely as possible: a lot of readers seem to be under the impression that somehow Mon-El "marked" Shady; that she isn't an autonomous human being. I'd still rather see her "doing the wrong thing" of her own volition, as it seems she has done. Better that than another creepy brainwashing or deception rationale for a character seeming to behave differently from what we'd expect.
The constant drumbeat from certain fans about how she's a "skank" or whatever simply because she's not joined at the hip to the same guy anymore is really starting to get me down.
I hope that's not the impression that Levitz is meaning to create of Shady, because-- damn! I'm starting to get depressed over the attitude of some of my brother/sister fans here!
^ I sympathise with your complaint cleome and think your post has the potential to get some interesting dialogue happening, but I'm not sure if this is the most appropriate thread for it. We're mainly talking about covers in here.
I think you might get more considered responses on that topic if you re-post it to one of the issue-specific threads that people are talking about Shady/Mon in?
Blacula, I was responding to jgallagher's comments above. I don't expect much in the way of exchanges on the subject at this point. We've already had them;I believe in more than one thread.
Everyone's entitled to their opinions, but I still find the number of times I've seen opinions like jg's at this point to be depressing. I just wanted to get that off my chest, that's all.
There is a tie so far, and the other one is only 2 votes behind...need a few more votes to finish this one up.
I'll take the first cover. Not just for nostalgia's sake, but because it makes best use of composition. The figures lead the eye around in a circle and it's a good mix-up of proportions and angles. Very effective.
It's over and Tales has won the pennant...Tayayayayayayaales has won the pennant.
Sorry...
Tales - 11
Baxter - 10
5YL - 9
Good close one.
An SP theme
Original LSH
Reboot LSH
3boot
Ugh. I hate that last one. The way the figure is distorted and crammed into the space just to make sure we get the mandatory and unnecessary eyeful of boobage is REALLY effing annoying!
First and second are both good. I'm sorry that the second one has the "RESIGNATION!" line at the bottom because it's intrusive and breaks the mood. But that happens a lot with covers, so I'll pick it anyway. The drawing is very nice.
Legionnaires #63- even if does feature the dreaded (by me) Sneckie.
#312 just isn't that good.
#41 was a disappointing "bait and switch". Not forgiven.
i like the #41 better...regardless of what the story was about.
41, despite that it wasn't really Shvaughn.
all 3 were of a similar level; none really wowed me.
Sheesh, I don't really like any of them. This will take some thought.
The original LSH one.
At least there are a couple of real Legionnaires on it. Not voting for anything with that silly snake on it.
Agreed EDE, but the one I like most is the one that is drawn the worst. LSH 312, so that gets my vote.
Gosh, I'm gonna have to vote for Threeboot 41.
I don't remember the story at all, but that's a pretty, pretty picture.
Original LSH. That says Science Police to me. The other covers don't.
Tough call between the first two. (I agree with cleome: the third one is awful.) I'll go with the first one for nostalgia reasons and because Sneckie is too distracting. (Look, kiddies! A snake!)

I'll (begrudgingly) agree with Jerry.
Though my problem with #41 is more the, er, non-regulation S.P. uniform than the bait-and-switch aspect (especially since I haven't read the issue!).
I'll take 312 for Jan's awesome 'fro!
Not a fan of any but I'll go with #63 (even if it did dangle the carrot of the queen of the panel-hogs quitting the team in front of me, only to snatch it away when she rejoined an issue later!).
I like 41 the best, though again, none of these thrill me.
Legionnaires #63.
, cleome!
Seriously, Shady's been my favorite character in comics since I was 12 (give or take a year or two since I can't remember what year she was introduced), almost 48 years ago.
I know Tasmia.
She wasn't raised as a warrior.
She went to the Shadow Cave, I think with her cousin Grev tagging along, somewhere around 10 - 12.
She might have grown up to be Shadow Champion and spunky, but other than a sound upper cut and some girl wrestling grabby stuff, she didn't show ANY physical warrion moves that I remember.
And she dumped Lar.
He said that.
Levitz is trying to copy Umbra and the Waid 3boot simpleton and make her 'more interesting'.
I don't buy it and I don't have to and I don't have to be quiet about it any more than you have to be quiet about your point of view.
Although, I'm sorry that this stuff is depressing you.
I wish I could make you understand that it's not about her femaleness because it's not.
Honor, team, staying away from sick and murderous indivduals, etc..
And yeah, I hope he reads this.
(And no more comments from me on this thread besides cover stuff.)
312. I loved that version of the SP uniform with the funky helmet.

Shady is one of my favorite characters. The point is not that she's a "skank." The point is that it is completely out of character for ANY Legionnaire to sleep with a villain, even if he is on probation. I wouldn't be any happier if Mon-El was sleeping with the Emerald Empress. And it was just done for shock value, which makes it even more offensive.
312
41 is a pretty good cover but 312 is from back in the (hey)day
I'll go LEGIONNAIRES 63, because I really hated Jan and Dirk's hair there, and LSH 41 kinda pissed me off.
LEGIONNAIRES 63
LSH # 312
Another close one until the last batch of votes...
LSH 312 - 16
Legionnaires 63 - 11
LSH 41 - 4
Random covers I have always liked...
Superboy
Action
LSH
I think this is the first time I'll vote for a threeboot cover. Dang quarter.
well well a 3-boot cover I can vote for.
3-boot for sure, even though it was in awfully poor taste to do this to longtime fans.
3-boot. that's a mean dawnstar, blok, and tyroc he draws.
It's between the Superboy and the Action covers for me. I'm going with the Superboy cover because it has Chameleon Boy on it. Plus the Legionnaires on the Action cover are so small.
I'm voting for Superboy cover despite the fact that I like the LSH #15 better.
That was just too cruel a joke to reward.
I'll vote Action because of Krypto!
Threeboot gets my vote - yes, it could be considered misleading, but it was done with a sense of humor, could be considered symbolic, and is just an amazing picture.
Action is nice, as well.
Superboy.
That threeboot cover felt like a slap in the face once I read the issue in question.
Other than perhaps Graduation Day, that threeboot issue left me feeling angrier than any other comic I've read in my life - so, even though it is a great pic of those three, there is no way I'm going to vote for it.
My vote goes to Action Comics #591. Good cover and story.
Threeboot. One of the best renditions of Dawnstar I've ever seen.
Gotta go with Legion #568, even though it was misleading. Kitson's art is just too incredible on our missing Legionnaire trio!! Besides, I remember when Barry was hanging out with us at LegionWorld, and he asked us the hypothetical question about what issue number Legion would be on if it had kept the old "Superboy and..." numbering. How can you not vote for the cover when we, as a collective web-group, helped provide that valuable data!?!?
"Should have been Legion #568" indeed!!
I've never seen the first two covers, and they're wonderful.
The Superboy is Giffen?
Who's the Action artist?
My vote is for Kitson's LSH.
His work is go good it kind of makes me crazy.
It's the only way I can explain it.
I disliked Primeboot, but loved the art.
sigh
^ The Action artist is John Byrne
For me though I am going Superboy
I was totally not gonna vote for the Threeboot cover, but after lil'rhino's comment, I went and checked out that Dawnstar again, and darn it, he's right, that's just the best Dawnstar I've seen for ages. So yeah, 15/568 it is!
If only it *had* been 568! *choke*
Kitson's artwork IS gorgeous, but I've always hated Dawnstar and Tyroc so I'm voting for Action.

I would have been, anyway.
I am a John Byrne fan so in a choice he will always get my vote (plus it was a good little story too): Action Comics.

Action - I would have loved to see Byrne do some Legion stories.
I do like the threeboot cover too, but it was too much of a tease.
I've always liked that Superboy cover. The black hand covering the logo is an eye-catching graphic. Plus, this is one of my favorite Wildfire costumes.
So, yah, Superboy for me.
Legion Of Super-Heros v5 15. Kitson is big!
New one tomorrow or Friday. Been hectic at work, and am too tired to think about it today.
Um, why is everyone putting Lash in their names?
I have to vote Threeboot on the last one.
Jim, get on over to the Mission Monitor Board and join the Lash family!
(I just noticed, Lash without the 'a' is Lsh!)

Wow! I never noticed the birthday cake feature before. I turned 50 today! Eek! How is that possible?
Easy. You were born in 1960.
Happy birthday, Jim. We'll have to start a birthday thread for you, if we haven't done so already.
Sorry 'bout the delay folks...
Superboy got 5
Action got 8
and
Threeboot got 18
Pretty clear that even if the cover is misleading, it can still be beautiful.
This was a little easier than I thought to get together...a few others to choose from, but the Lightle one would have probably won hands down.
Adventure Comics
Tales
Adventures of Superman
Valor
I'm going with Adventure.
This is the Dev-em cover contest, right? I assume that that is Dev-em in the Tales cover in the Dark Circle costume firing off heat vision. But you wouldn't know it just from loking at the cover without the context of the other covers. I didn't like the Superman story where Dev-em becomes a psychotic madman. And the Valor cover is really about Mon-el. Anyone else could have taken Dev-em's place on that cover.
Meanwhile the Adventure cover is where Dev-em becomes one of the good guys.
Just lookin for Dev appearances on covers...
Adventures of Superman: Time and Time Again
That was my favorite look for Dev Em. Jurgens has always been a hit or miss artist for me, but his work on Superman during that period stands out. I also like the blackish/metallic coloring of Superman's costume. Nice background detail,as well.
This was a little easier than I thought to get together...a few others to choose from, but the Lightle one would have probably won hands down.
Lightle did one with Dev? Oh, I assume you mean the one with the membership drive he appeared on?

Tales (just read that one last night).
Adventure. I love Dev-Em's "punch me or kiss me" attitude.
Adventure
Totally Tales. 'Cause it's got Mysa!
Adventure #320 for me too.
Normally I love me an Adventure cover but I'm just not seeing whatever's got everyone else voting for this one. I'll say Adventures of Superman because I loved that storyline.
Tales. Ultra Boy and Mon-El in action (oh yes, and Mysa, too
)!
None of 'em are great....Adventure
I like Valor.....just cuz....Tyroc, Andromeda, and Shady there.
Okay...new one in the next day or so. Promise.
Valor 22. It's a sad great moment for Lar and Tasmia.
VALOR 22... End of an Era was a powerful tale.
Okay. Wow. Totally spaced on this. Gonna get a new one ready tonight.
Valor, if I'm not too late.
I'll go with Tales. No real reason, apart from my weakness for those old-school "pirate" boots.
Okay then.
Adventure - 13
Tales - 12
Adv of Superman - 2
Valor - 3
Battle of the #1's
Valor
Timber Wolf
Karate Kid
Cosmic Boy
Cosmic Boy!! Just look at those thighs!! God bless Steve Lightle!!
Ah, this one's easy ... Karate Kid #1. A true classic.
The Timber Wolf one is well-painted(?) but I didn't like that version of Brin.
Cosmic Boy for me.
Got to go with Karate Kid! Love the representation of him leaping out of the Time Bubble to kick some 20th century ass!
As much as I'm a fan of Mon-El, I can't vote for his cover for two reasons: I hate the name Valor and I especially hate those headlights he's wearing on his chest.
No, my vote goes to Karate Kid, which is pleasing on the eyes, imaginative, and conveys a lot of information in a deceptively simple design.
Iron Mike shines on Karate Kid. Easy choice for me.
If that had been regular Brin it would have my vote.
I'll vote Karate Kid.
nah.....Timber Wolf works for me! grrooowwlll!
Cosmic Boy for the win. Steve Lightle is amazing!
That is really nice art on the T-Wolf cover, but that's not my Brin, so it doesn't pass muster. And, yikes, is that an unfortunate Karate Kid cover...
I'm torn between Mo... er Valor and Cosmic Boy.
Valor

What he said.
Another vote for Cosmic Boy. Love the Lightle.
as much of a Steve Lightle fanatic I am ..........
I think I'm gonna go with Karate Kid! It's got an energy to it.
I'll go with Karate Kid. Of the three, it stands out as having more going on and isn't just a solo shot of the character. Never liked that look for Brin and the other two, while well-composed, aren't really all that visually interesting or definitive.
Valor
Timber Wolf
It's between these two for me, since I liked both versions, although I disliked the name 'Valor'.
I love Lar, but his cover isn't really very dynamic or revealing of who he is.
It seems that DC has been trying very hard with Lar for a long time, with or without Shady.
They might have succeeded with Robinson's Superman crossovers this time.
Maybe.
sigh
TW fits right in with today's cultural icons.
He just needs a couple of ghoulish buddies.
His cover is very 'in your face', which is who he is, too.
I choose Timber Wolf's cover.
Coin flip time and........ Sorry Cos, Val gets my vote.
Why do the colors look so washed out on Valor's cover? If not for that, I might have voted for it. Plus I hate the name Valor.
