The preview of Justice League United #8, due out this week, reveals a cameo of a missing Legionnaire everyone's been asking about....

I think that page might have malware. I went to it and it just tried to download something onto my computer.

Bummer. I only viewed it on my iPad, so I didn't know there was a problem.

Who was the missing Legionnaire?

Plus an interesting aside, the narration states the inspiration for the forming of the Legion was the.......,.Justice League!?!

I, for one, am always glad to see an appearance by Colossal Lad!
Posted By: Blacula Re: Justice League United #8 - 01/13/15 04:19 PM
It also introduces the exciting new Legionnaire, Colossal Lad...

Clearly the villain of the issue will be that DC main-stay, Bad Editor. He's a worse panel-hog than Brainiac 5.

^ haha Looks like EDE's copy editing skills were quicker than mine!

That was one little Easter egg I was saving for you guys to find. My jaw dropped when I saw they got Colossal Boy's name wrong on the roll call.

I also was bummed to see White Witch listed in the roll call. While I love Mysa as the White Witch, I had hoped they'd keep her Black Witch self in continuity so we could have an epic Mordru returns storyline someday down the road.

No Night Girl or XS so far...
Posted By: Leather Wolf Re: Justice League United #8 - 01/14/15 09:56 AM
Well this was a more Legion focused issue.

XS is back! Not sure why Quislet was in roll call since he didn't appear in this issue. Can anyone identify a couple of extra Legionnaies in the story? One could possibly be.....Ferro Lad????

This is the Retroboot Legion, but with changes.... Dream Girl is acting Legion Leader. Star Boy is definitely still alive. The way the story is presented, it would appear if this is picking up the future as portrayed in Legion Lost #10 (You might want to pull out that back issue to read as a future companion to this one) and bypassing Levitz's New 52 run...

XS! That makes me happy. And Dream Girl as leader is great.

Andromeda? Monstress and XS too?

For those of us tired of the original, reboot, 3-boot and post-boot Legions we now have the composite Legion.

Yay! Best possible outcome.

Unless it turns out to be a 'goodbye gift' from DC to the Legion fans, in which case change 'yay' to boo!!

Then add to that list the other Legionnaires that appeared last issue...

Chameleon Girl
Gates
Tellus
Wildfire

That's quite a Legion roster. It's the Retroboot Legion at the core plus everyone else! Thanks for filling in the missing links. I didn't recognize the Reboot and Threeboot Legionnaires because I've only read and collected the Original and Retroboot Legion runs.
Posted By: Elvar Re: Justice League United #8 - 01/14/15 04:27 PM
Sun Boy also from last issue
Posted By: Dave Hackett Re: Justice League United #8 - 01/14/15 05:27 PM
So at this point I think we can safely dump continuity up to this point and just go with it, as the Amalgam Legion here can't possibly match up to anything that's come before. I'm curious as to whether it was Lemire or the artist who added all the extra Legionnaires, considering they weren't in the roll call.
Posted By: Eryk Davis Ester Re: Justice League United #8 - 01/14/15 05:31 PM
Yeah, as Lemire himself said, he's not trying to give us any particular continuity, but just a vaguely "classic" Legion, which appears to now involve throwing everyone and Kitchen-Sink Lad into the mix.

My guess is that whenever we get a new Legion title, it will be a wholly new continuity, and none of this will matter.
Posted By: Leather Wolf Re: Justice League United #8 - 01/14/15 07:18 PM
It's like a reboot of the Retroboot Legion only with a different outcome from Lo3W joining the teams together. Perhaps this is what Geoff Johns should have done at the end of Lo3W to make the new Legion more palatable to all Legion fans instead of only adding Gates and XS to the Retroboot team. Is this what "Convergence" will ultimately bring about?

Still, there is still some continuity wiggle room left between Levitz's last run and Lemire's arc if DC editors decide to go for it. I for one will be interested in seeing how this storyline finally plays out. It is interesting that Lemire decided to use DeFalco's Legion Lost series as being in continuity with his tale while casting Levitz's series aside. Perhaps the Lemire/DeFalco Legion is the real New 52 Legion after all...
Posted By: Silver Age Lad Re: Justice League United #8 - 01/14/15 08:55 PM
The pedantic continuity freak in me wants an explanation but the fanboy just goes yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

I guess all of the reboot Legionnaires we've seen could be simply new Legionnaires recruited during this crisis, Danielle was already in continuity and Ferro could be Douglas Nolan.

Still no Night Girl though. I will not be satisfied until we see Night Girl.
Posted By: Silver Age Lad Re: Justice League United #8 - 01/14/15 09:11 PM
Thinking this through a little. DC might have a deliberate plan to include ALL Legionnaires so fans of the reboot can't say well I'm not buying this Legion because Kinetix isn't in it or whatever. Perhaps we will see Kent Shakespeare, Kono and co next.
Posted By: Harbinger Re: Justice League United #8 - 01/14/15 10:06 PM
No Comet Queen, Glorith, Chemical Kid, Harmonia or Dragonwing though? frown
Posted By: ultrajo Re: Justice League United #8 - 01/14/15 11:30 PM
About time we got the Legion in most of the book. My favorite issue of this storyline.

They could always recruit one from Bummb'l where all natives have the same ability as Bouncing Boy.

I had to control myself from screaming out loud when I saw CANDI and DANIELLE.
Posted By: Portfolio Boy Re: Justice League United #8 - 01/15/15 04:12 AM
On Page 3, any idea who that is under Cosmic Boy? My guess is that, just as the miscolored reboot Element Lad (aka Alchemist) this is a miscolored Invisible Kid. However, as we got multiple versions of the same characters last issue, I'm not certain if what may be a headband is actually headgear, and we're looking at another Gim. Maybe THAT'S Colossal Lad?
Posted By: Portfolio Boy Re: Justice League United #8 - 01/15/15 04:20 AM
On Page 10, who is that behind Computo and Kid Quantum?

Interestingly, this page gives us a mix of reboot and Legionnaires teams. After all (correct me if I'm wrong), M-E Lad, Dragonmage and Computo were never members of the reboot team. Tenzil and Xao appeared, but never used these costumes.

Interestingly, the Legionnaires team was between the original and reboot teams, which raises the question of whether the TMK era existed, since the retroboot characters seems to have skipped that era.
Posted By: Portfolio Boy Re: Justice League United #8 - 01/15/15 04:23 AM
I think I answered my own question. The Unknown Boy on Page 10 must be a relative of Konk!, from the Uncanny Amazers. On Page 11 his body appears at the far right of the top panel, while his head (notice no legs) appears between Garth and Tenzil.

KINETIX LIIIIIVES

And so good to see so SO many others again, after SO long.

And yes, Zoe returns, and I had to dust off and remove the mothballs from my account. ;D
Posted By: EmeraldEmpress Re: Justice League United #8 - 01/15/15 07:23 PM
Some incoherences between the scriptwriter and the artist...

If in the Justice League United we see flying in the space :
Dream Girl , Ultra Boy, Blok, Star Boy, Cosmic Boy, Lightining Lass and inside with the 2 teams . Bouncing Boy.

Why in the Issue 8, all these legionnaires are in the 31st century again.

And if Nura has just said that Shadow Lass continues in medical stasis in Mars recovering, for that we see her flying close to the group.

Mention separates both versions of Tyroc and Chamelon Girl coexisting...

On the other hand it is pleasing to see again to XS, Kinetix, Ferro, Monstress, Magno, Computo, Andromeda, Dragonmage and Radion? (the guy in orange and Black costume).

I think is the first time that AndrĂ³meda and Supergirl are in the same issue...

That made me go YEAHH!! as well! It was actually the first thing I saw on Facebook when I woke up, so this promises to be a good day smile

It's good to see all those long-lost Legionnaires again, if only for a bit. Kinetix, XS, Monstress, Kid Quantum II, Magno, Gates, Andromeda, Computo, Dragonmage, Ferro...

Posted By: Leather Wolf Re: Justice League United #8 - 01/17/15 07:15 PM
While I see a number of us are excited to see so many Legionnaires in this issue, I must wonder what the fans of Justice League United must be thinking to have the Legion take over their book, especially with it being such a new book.

Is some ways this is similar to when Superboy, the Teen Titans and the Ravengers took over Legion Lost. I know at the time I hated the title being over run by so many guest stars. I just wanted DeFalco to have the time to tell Legion stories. I'd think JLU fans must be thinking the same thing about Lemire now!
Posted By: Invisible Brainiac Re: Justice League United #8 - 01/17/15 08:05 PM
Interesting and empathetic insight, LW. Having not read the issue yet, I can't comment, although hopefully there is a good balance between the screen time of the two teams.

Nope. The Legion has the whole first half of the story. The JLU team appears on only one-third of the pages. And by team, I mean Martian Manhunter and Supergirl. The other JLUers are only cameos.
Posted By: Invisible Brainiac Re: Justice League United #8 - 01/18/15 04:52 AM
Oh, thanks for clarifying, LT. I can see where Wolf is coming from.
Posted By: Portfolio Boy Re: Justice League United #8 - 01/22/15 04:12 PM
It just occurred to me why JLU #8 is SO bad. It's a filler issue. Note that this issue says it is {art 4 of 6 in the "Infinitus Saga." Previous issues, however, have listed the story as a five-part event.

My guess is that Jeff Lemire plotted out the story before the directive came down to wrap everything up for the "Convergence" cover-our-asses-while-we-disembark-so-sunny-Cali linewide mega event. Rather than write one stand-alone issue for #10, because what comic book writer today is capable of doing that, Lemire simply padded out the current saga with one plotless filler issue.

Aside from no plot to speak of, this theory also answers why there are so few words and panels in this comics, that that I was able to read the entire thing in five minutes, 15 seconds. It was a last-minute rush job.
Posted By: Leather Wolf Re: Justice League United #8 - 01/22/15 07:44 PM
Not only that, Portfolio Boy, but 6 issue arcs make better trades. I'm sure this will come out as a trade. Everything does anymore.

It amazed me how quick of a read this issue was when you hold the actual comic in your hand. It felt like there was a little more meat on the bones when I first read it on my iPad.

You'd have thought that if this was a filler issue, then they could have drawn a few more JLU characters to keep its readers happier instead of just focusing on the Legion.
Posted By: rickshaw1 Re: Justice League United #8 - 01/23/15 01:30 AM
I'm in a quandry here. I haven't been impressed by either team, and I haven't liked what Lemire has done here, but I liked him on other books.

It took me a book or two to realize that this was supposed to be like the old JSA/JLA teamups, but it just doesn't feel like it.

Maybe I'm just old now, but my legion seems a long time gone.
Posted By: Leather Wolf Re: Justice League United #8 - 02/08/15 02:45 AM
Well with the news of June's company wide re-launch of titles, and Lemire's departure from JLU, it's no wonder he stretched the Legion arc out from 5 issues to 6. But that still doesn't excuse him for not telling more story in this issue. Instead of padding it with more artwork, Lemire could have used the extra issue for character development or something...
