Situated in the Legion headquarters, the Hall of Heroes holds statues of the many fallen legends who have sacrificed themselves to save the universe, planets, loved ones and freedom.

Here's a look at the last moments of those Legionnaires who have departed. Some have returned from the dead, while others weren't quite as dead as originally suspected. But all were willing to give their lives for the ideals of the Legion.

January 1963, Lightning Lad, Adventure Comics 304, Garth was struck by a freeze ray from Zaryan the Conqueror's invasion ship.

July 1963, Ultra Boy, Shrinking Violet, Chameleon Boy, Triplicate Girl, Element Lad, Phantom Girl, Colossal Boy, Invisible Kid, Cosmic Boy, Saturn Girl, Brainiac 5, Lightning Lass, Sun Boy, Bouncing Boy, Mon-El , Adventure Comics 310, Feeling humiliated by the Legion during his attempt to raid Metropolis, Mask Man vows to kill everyone on the team. He proceeds to do just that, leaving Superboy as the sole survivor. Superboy discovers that Mask Man is Mxyzptlk. Upon banishing the villain everything returns to the way it was before his arrival.

Note that Bouncing Boy and Sun Boy are considered to have been killed off panel, as Superboy is depicted as being the sole survivor. Star Boy is on the splash page, but does not appear in the story. However, "others" are mentioned beyond those named in a ship explosion. He could have been there.

September 1963, Proty I, Adventure Comics 312, Sacrificed itself by transferring life force into the body of Lightning Lad.

January 1966, Triplicate Girl, Adventure 340, Luornu's first body was killed by Computo, as she was escaping from an computer controlled Legion HQ.

February 1967, Ferro Lad, Adventure 353, Andrew detonated a bomb, destroying the Sun Eater at the cost of his life. Andrew’s death was foreshadowed in Adventure 351 (December 1966). His statue in the time of the Adult Legion (Adventure 354 March 1967) read “Ferro Lad: Who gave his life that the galaxy might live.”





March 1967, Shadow Woman, Foreshadowed in Adventure Comics 354, In the time of the Adult Legion stories, her statue will read “Shadow Woman: Who died saving the science asteroid.”





March 1967, Quantum Queen, Foreshadowed in Adventure Comics 354, In the time of the Adult Legion stories, her statue will read “Quantom [sic] Queen: Perished preventing an escape from Cosmos Prison”




March 1967, UnknownAdventure 354 foreshadowed the deaths of Ferro Lad, Chemical King, “Quantom” Queen, Reflecto, Shadow Woman, Power Boy and at least three others.

January 1970, Mon El, Action 384, Lar died from lead poisoning, ironically in an effort by his cousin Eltro Gand to kidnap and replace him to avoid a prophecy of Lar's death.

June 1973, Erg-1, Superboy 195, Drake sacrificed himself to stop the Devourer on Manna and save the Legionnaires.

August 1974, Invisible Kid I, SBoy 203, Lyle managed to destroy the electronic brain of Tharok, even as Validus crushed the life from him.

June 1977, Chemical King, SBoy 228, Condo absorbed the energy of Deregon’s cosmic energy sphere, saving much of the Earth from devastation and the rest from World War VII. Condo’s death was foreshadowed in Adventure 354 (March 1967). His statue in the time of the Adult Legion read “Chemical King: He sacrificed his life to prevent World War VII.”

April 1981, Ultra Boy, LoSH 274, Jo as blasted into seemingly nothing by Pulsar Stargrave as the team looked to clear Brainiac Five's murder charge. He had simply been transported, but again seemed to perish in the blast of a Quintile Crystal powered energy cannon in June 1981's LoSH 276 (picture on the right).

November 1984, Karate Kid, LoSH v3 4, Val flew into a power sphere, destroying the plans of the LSV after suffering injuries at the hands of Nemesis Kid.

December 1984, Nemesis Kid, LoSH v3 5, Hart's neck was broken by Projectra, who executed him for the death of Karate Kid.

June 1985, Kid Psycho, Crisis 3, Gnill died during an evacuation operation of England, as Anti matter swept across the skies of Earth.

October 1985, Supergirl, Crisis 7, Kara saved her cousin Superman, destroyed machines that were destructively merging five universes, but died from injuries sustained in conflict with the Anti-Monitor.

January 1986 Superboy/ Superman, Insect Queen, Elastic Lad, Pete Ross, Super Pets, Crisis 10, Kal, Lana, Jimmy, Pete and all the Super Pets were removed from existence upon the rebirth of the Universe. Kara and possibly Gnill are also removed from existence.

September 1986 Mentalla, LoSH v3 26, Having been rejected for Legion membership, Delya infiltrated the Fatal Five. She was discovered and killed by the Emerald Empress.





September 1987, Superboy, LoSH v3 38, Kal died saving his pocket universe and transporting the Legion back to their own time and universe.

February 1988, Laurel Kent, LoSH v3 43, Laurel was revealed as a robotic agent of the Manhunters. She self destructed when her mission to stop the chosen of the Guardians failed.






June 1988, The Wanderers, Wanderers 1, Celebrand, Quantum Queen, Psyche, Dartalg, Immorto, Elvo and Ornitho were killed by monsters spawned by the mutated offspring of a Controller and his cloned wife. Note that the March 1967 issue showed Quantum Queen as a statue in the Legion Hall of Heroes. That statue may not have been the first time the character had died.







September 1988, Duo Damsel, LoSH v3 50, Luornu's second body was killed by the Time Trapper at the end of time.

June 1989, Mon-El, LoSH v3 60, Lar died following injuries inflicted upon him by the Time Trapper in v3 50.

June 1989, Magnetic Kid, LoSH v3 60, Pol sacrificed himself to gain the Legion access through a mystical portal to the Sorcerer's World, during the Magic Wars.

Five Year Gap, Phantom Girl, Revealed in v4 2 December 1989, details shown in v4 Annual 1 1990, Tinya was killed in a shuttle accident travelling through inter dimensional space between her Bgtzl and Earth.

Five Year Gap, Reflecto, Revealed in 2995 Sourcebook, Stig was poisoned in a duel with the Molecule Master during investigations that would lead to the Black Dawn incident at Earth’s sun. Stig’s death was foreshadowed in Adventure 354 (March 1967). His statue in the time of the Adult Legion read “Reflecto: Killed in a duel with the Molecule Master.”

Five Year Gap, Wildfire, Shown v4 52 December 1993, Drake merged with Earth's sun to prevent it imploding during Black Dawn.

January 1990, Blok, LoSH v4 3, He was murdered by Dominator backed villain, Roxxas.

February 1991, Nightwind, LoSH v4 15, Berta was shot during a Khund attack on Xolnar.




April 1991, Power Boy, LoSH v4 17, Jed was killed fighting against the Khunds on Xolnar. Power Boy’s death was foreshadowed in Adventure 354 (March 1967), where a statue was seen by Superman in a garden setting.




April 1991, Tornado Twins, LoSH v4 17, Don and Dawn were executed by Dominator controlled Earthgov, following their arrest for supporting the resistance or in revenge against Iris West for her working in exposing the Dominators.

August 1991, Atmos, LoSH v4 21, Marak was incinerated as a trial run of the Dominator controlled BION.

August 1991, Chameleon Boy, Karate Kid and , Princess Projectra, LoSH v4 32, Reep, Val and Jeckie were killed in a detonation following the successful rescue of rebel forces from the dominator pods beneath Metropolis.

November 1992, Sun Boy, LoSH v4 36, Having been caught in the blast of an exploding power sphere, the radiation caused Dirk's powers to feed on him. He was shot by Circe after his retrieval from the Dominator pods.

August 1993, Bloodclaw, LoSH v4 46, Fighting Mordru's forces, Bloodclaw was forced to kill himself, as the powers of a reanimated Magnetic Kid's controlled his metallic claws.

March 1994, Valor, Valor 17, Lar died from lead poisoning. He refused to join Glorith as it would mean abandoning everything he stood for.

July 1994, Veilmist, LoSH v4 58, Having been forcibly returned to the Khunds,Veilmist offered to remove bombs from Webers World only to be shot by Firefist.

July 1994, Laurel Gand, LoSH v4 59, Surgeons were unable to save her life from injuries sustained in a bomb blast on Webers World in v4 58.

August 1994, Leviathan, LoSH v4 60, Gim was killed by Glorith as he tried to disable the time beacon that was the reason behind her attack on the Legion.

September 1994, Everyone, LoSH v4 61, Zero Hour seemingly removed the Legionnaire's universe, and everyone in it, from existence.

November 1994, Kid Quantum, LoSH v4 62, James' neck was broken in an encounter with Tangleweb.

1995, Apparition, Legionnaires Annual 2, Tinya was incinerated by one of the White Triangle Daxamites who were rampaging across Earth.





1995, Tornado Twins, LoSH Annual 6, Jenni Ognats recounts the death of her parents fighting the Dominators.






1996, Phase, Membrain, Graft, Nervosa, Metrox , LoSH v4 Annual 7, In the far future, this group perished fighting a star destroying space ship.

November 2005, Dream Girl, v5 10, Nura was crushed by debris during an evacuation of the Legion HQ.

June 2006, Superboy, Infinite Crisis 6, Connor died destroying Alexander Luthor's tower, preventing him from rearranging the universe.

May 2008, Una, Countdown 5, Luornu was killed by a pack of mutated rats as she saved Buddy Blank and his grandson in the 21st century.

July 2008, Karate Kid, Countdown 7, Val succumbed to a virus upon travelling to the 21st century.

November 2008, Dragonmage, Lo3W 2, As he faced the Legionnaires, Mordru called on those who died "by pain and torture" at his hands to rise once more. Xao was one of those named by Mordru.

November 2008, Rond Vidar, Lo3W 2, Having pushed his colleagues to safety, Rond faced a revised LSV. His neck was broken by Superboy Prime.

April 2009, Karate Kid II, Lo3W 3, Myg was incinerated by Radiation Roy during a battle with a revised LSV.

April 2009, Sun Boy, Lo3W 3, Dirk was frozen and broken apart in a battle against Superboy Prime.

June 2009, Kinetix, Lo3W 4, Zoe was killed by Superboy Prime's heat vision.

June 2009, Element Lad, Lo3W 4, Superboy Prime threw a piece of kryptonite through Jan, killing him.

October 2011, Variable Lad, Adventure Comics 329, Oaa saved his tutors and academy colleagues from Cosmic King of the LSV, but died in the final duel with the villain.







October 2011, Earth Man, v6 16, Kirt used the combined will of the Legion to absorb the power of the Adversary, but could not survive the energies that he took into himself.

April 2013, Sun Boy, LoSH v7 17, Dirk died piloting his colleagues to safety when power failed on their craft.

May 2013, Star Boy, LoSH v7 18, Thom was crushed by debris from collapsing Legion HQ, after ensuring the safety of Dream Girl.

July 2013, Duplicate Damsel, LoSH v7 18, One of Luornu's duplicates is killed fighting the Persuader in Metropolis.

That was a really unsettling read. I only read it for the first time as part of the reread thread, and I was shocked. Having read the Reflecto saga, seeing Ultra Boy supposedly dead wasn't a new thing. But then it just got worse and worse for them... >shivers<

Apparition died as well in the reboot.

I feel kind of dumb for missing that. I mean, she got better and all, but Apparition's death was one of the most memorable scenes in the Reboot for me

It was a powerful, visceral, haunting scene. I consider L* Annual 2 to be one of the single most well-written issues in all the decades that the Legion has existed in one form or another.

I also LIKED Apparition pre-death much, MUCH better than I EVER liked Phantom Girl. I talked about that quite a bit in my Luornu thread recently, so I'll just reiterate the gist -- Postboot Tinya was well-defined, complex, and strong, while I feel that Preboot Tinya was never more than a pretty face framed by a couple of age-inappropriate but very healthy-looking pigtails.

Point being, I think bringing Apparition back to life was a cop-out. After she was back in the future, she and Jo (whose Postboot version I also far prefer to his Preboot counterpart) both got whinier and less likeable, and DnA just made them both even worse.

Personally, I'd like to have seen Postboot Jo and Sussa gradually drift back into each others' arms in the aftermath of Tinya's death.

Oh, hang on a minute, Tinya can turn intangible, so no worries then, la la la la la.

Jed's death was much more meaningful than Berta's, despite them dying in the same "story". At least Jed succeeded in awakening Mysa's spirit, so to speak. Berta was just cannon fodder.

And like Dave said above, Una's death by rat was such a waste of space.

Seeing it in this format and factoring in a few of the Elseworlds, it's interesting which Legionnaires seem to die frequently across continuities and who never register an appearance. Colossal Boy and Sun Boy have really tallied some deaths. Not to mention poor Lu.

All these retellings of the Legion's early years, and I'm surprised that nobody has written in early members like a (Caucasian earth-woman) Shadow Woman or (unrelated to the Wanderer of the same name) Quantum Queen as Legionnaires who end up dying (instead of figures like James Cullen/Kid Quantum I). In my head, the (referenced but never shown, IIRC) 'first battle with Mordru' might be a good place for 'Shadow Woman' (predating the appearance of the blue-skinned Shadow Lass from Talokk VIII by years, and having different powers, like the ability to turn into shadow) to lose her life.

I guess that, as it was an adult Supes visiting a more distant future, that these were to be members after his time as Superboy. By #300 Levitsz had marked these as an alternate future. You're right that retconning in Kid Quantum could just as easily have been the story of Quantum Queen. Perhaps, as she had already appeared as a Wnaderer, they felt it had to be a bit different. Of course, the Wanderers' Quantum Queen didn't have to be the first with that name.

It's a shame that Interplanet Janet was used to scout worlds by Buck Phaser in the pages of Xenophobic Monthly back in the '50s or rather in the 1950's when it was set.
