Sad news for Legion fandom...

APA-247 (that's the British Legion APA) founder Peter Hayward-Brewer died on May 16 in Brighton. I don't know anything beyond what's included in the following email which was sent out by his friend Will Morgan, but Peter's place in Legion history is assured. He was a member of Interlac during the Bierbaum's run, and when they needed something to call the Legion clones, they chose SW6 after Peter's postal code. In the U.K., postal codes contain letters and are usually in two groups of three, and Peter's started off with SW6, SW standing for South West London. He was also associated with 30th Century Comics (whose area code starts off with SW15), but I'm not sure if he founded that, too.

As to why Tom and Mary decided to use the SW6 prefix, they just thought it sounded cool.

I have sad news. Apa-247 founder and my beloved friend, Peter Hayward-Brewer, died in hospital in Brighton yesterday afternoon at 4.30.

He had been taken into hospital several days earlier in respiratory distress, and had notified 30th Century that he wouldn't be in, but asked us not to make his illness generally known as he hoped he'd be out quite soon, and didn't want anyone to worry.

Then, by the time it became clear that things were gravely serious, it all moved very quickly.

He was moved into intensive care, and shortly thereafter, was put onto a respirator as he could no longer breathe unaided. Complications arose, and he went into kidney failure.

Bernard, his partner of twelve years, was with him when he died. Peter's children had also visited him in hospital, as had his brother and many of Peter's local friends from the church group they ran in Brighton.

Obviously, this has been a devastating blow. I had known Peter for twenty-six years, and counted him my closest friend.

I hope I may be forgiven the relative impersonalness of this e-mail,but, as I discovered making some phone calls earlier, I'm not really very good at the coherent conversation right now.

Bernard asked me to make sure that everyone in the comics/fandom world who knew and loved Peter, as many of us did, was informed.

As soon as the funeral arrangements are made, I'll make sure they're posted so that anyone who wishes to can attend.

In the meantime, please keep Bernard and Peter, and Peter's family, in your thoughts and, where appropriate, prayers.

I'll be in touch again as soon as further information is known.

Will Morgan.
That email was written on May 17, so I would imagine that Peter has been laid to rest by now.
Sad news, but thanks for posting this, Glen.

(I didn't know that Peter H-B was the source of "SW6".)
I believe he was also the guy who guessed that Projectra was Sensor Girl. I remember reading his letters in the baxter legion books.
