During the Tians/Legion crossover with Harvest, where captive young metahumans were forced to fight for reasons I still cannot quite comprehend, one unfortunate captive (who for some reason did not seem to have any metapowers anyway) was killed, galvanizing our heroes into fighting back.

What was the name of this captive (who, it seems, got better in the end?)

I might be getting my bad Titans stories mixed up but I seem to remember hearing that Fever (I think her name was) from Arcudi's Doom Patrol died in one of them, so I'll guess her.

Fever did die, but that was way before this happened.

I really thought about listing another England to represent Hawk II but ultimately decided it was too inconclusive. Her background just states that she and Dawn were given the choice as to where to grow up (either the US with their father or the UK with their mother) and each chose different. Since both parents (the mother works for the US State Department) and Dawn seem to be American, I think it's safe to assume Holly probably is too, despite where she grew up.

I'm kicking myself for missing Mirage. I had a vague memory of her being Brazilian but when I quickly skimmed her biography I missed that confirmation, so left her off. Oh well.

I also almost included an entry for Lagoon Boy under "Atlantis (somewhere outside of)" since his first appearance makes it clear he's newly settled there, but just thought that would confuse things.

A pre-teen (but from the other direction; comic books, ladies and gentlemen!) Atom made a number of appearances beginning in issue #53.

And an adult Hawk and Dove made a continuity-iffy (even more so than by the usual TB&tB standards) appearance in issue #181.

yes, it was in Zero Hour, and yes, it was Damage. It was horrible and the only reason i remember is because it was my first crossover

I' ve done that for this thread and kicked myself as questions are tough to come by. I was going to say good questions, but I'm happy when I find anything.

Yes - my process is usually:

1. Think of some random member or topic (e.g. “Zachary Zatara” or “live action Titans portrayals”); and then
2. Do a quick Google until I find something interesting to ask about it.

But I’ve been feeling a little down and unmotivated lately.

That said, I just put my process into action and here is the random topic I’m asking about: “Titans named after living creatures”.

Q: Please name the 15 (by my count; you might come up with more) individual Titans who are named after living creatures.

* Rule 1: It must be a specific creature (so the generic “Beast” Boy does not count).
* Rule 2: Humans don’t count either (so no Wonder “Girl”).
* Rule 3: It also can’t be a character named after just a creature’s body part (so no “Talon”).

Cassandra Cain was on the evil version of Titans East that appeared in one story but I don’t consider them “real” Titans.

Yeah, La Dama was Brenda's aunt, not Jaime (Beetle)'s aunt. And La Dama was the one who would be classified as a super-villain. So the relationship got shuffled a bit.

There was that Titans story where Wonder Girl led a group of "substitute" Titans on a case in some snowy place, versus Cheshire. Roy was there, and Jason Todd, Hawk and Dove, and Red Star.

and in COIE, when the heroes were jumping to Earth-4, S and X to save those planets from the villains, Hawk goes "why is this Commie coming along?!" and Don had to shush him.

That's why I dislike Hank Hall so much. He reminds me of idiotic Facebook commenters that spread hate everywhere.

Kid Flash was the one I was thinking about, from the original Titans run. But Hawk's political views certainly made him dislike Red Star too.

Leonid wasn't actually in that Titans vs. Cheshire story IB. That was just Donna, Wally, Roy, Garth, Hank and Jason (as a substitute for Dick).

That panel in 'Crisis' though! THAT'S where I remembered that animosity from Hawk toward Red Star from!

However, if I recall correctly, that panel just showed a snide comment from Hank to Don without any interaction with Leonid.

Trying to get to the source of the vision took her, and the others, to the Yucatan. There she discovered that, when activated, the necklace didn't release the hero, but a larger scarab creature. To all intents and purposes it was a demon. It's a fairly creepy tale.

^ It’s the period just after that when the team seems to travel from one misty, spooky locale to another encountering things like curses and ghosts and witches. It runs from roughly issue #s 32-43 and also includes a team-up with Superman in World’s Finest.

Mal and Lilith were featured prominently during this period and they’re two of my faves. Nick Cardy also handled most of the art chores on these issues so you know they’ll look great.

IB got it straight away! It was Epsilon! The introduction of that crappy character and the even worse D.E.O.rphans was what made me drop that run of the book but I wonder if the revelation that it was Danny would have brought me back? Probably not, I was never the biggest Danny fan but I do love the design of Phantasm and thought that was a clever progression for Danny's character. So if he did ever come back, I would have preferred him to return to that role.

I knew there was supposed to be some mystery about Epsilon, but I agree, Phantasm would have been a better "return" for Danny. I'm not a big Danny fan either, but he worked well as a male hero who wasn't the conventional attractive, built, buff hero type.

And yes, Epsilon and the D.E.O.rphans were terrible and I hope I never see them again (well, Epsilon died so yay).

Not Kyle. I'm actually not the biggest Kyle fan. I don't mind him, but I think that there are too many Earth Green Lanterns (and it's only gotten worse since I stopped reading!) and of the first four, he's the one I'd be happiest to lose. I'd be cool with him adopting his own identity though.

Also not Tim. I like Tim and would be sorry to hear he was killed off permanently, but I think the Robin-verse is another extremely crowded field and one or two of them should be gotten rid of I think. I'd rather it be Jason (especially if he's just going to be a Punisher-clone) or Damien though.

I agree that DC has a problem with too many characters sharing the same identity. They know a money-maker when they see one...

Wally West?

Not Vic. Is he on any chopping blocks? I'd be surprised since DC seems to be trying to make him happen so bad. I like Vic but only as a Titan and through his relationships with them. He just looks so out of place on the JLA to me and I think that move will go down as a big failure for the character. If they wanted a minority on the team for the movie, John Stewart or Vixen or especially Black Lightning would have been much better fits IMO.

Also not Wally. I like him of course and loved the idea of a sidekick stepping up to fill his mentor's shoes, but I can see why DC is have difficulty finding a role for him now that Barry's back. He can't go back to being Kid Flash again and I don't think the Flash family can support multiple Flashes the way the Green Lantern Corps can (Jay Garrick being an exception because he fills a special role IMO).

Oh, I was thinking of Mal too. So I'll instead go for Bumblebee.

All great guesses because those are (or were in one case) three of my favorite DC characters ever at one stage!

* Fortunately, Mal Duncan is relaxing in limbo somewhere at the moment I think which is probably the safest place for him. He's my eternal fave DC character though so I would be supremely angry to hear DC were killing him off.
* Bumblebee is also another fave of course but I think she is fortunately safe for a while while they push her as part of the DC Super-Hero Girls.
* Roy Harper was my second favorite character in comics ever after I discovered him through my first favorite character in comics, his mentor Green Arrow. I would seek out and savor any and every appearance of his (rare as they were) during the late 80s and 90s when I was first collecting comics. I loved, and still love, his Speedy costume (especially as drawn by George Perez). I wrote a letter to DC begging them not to kill him off during 'Titans Hunt' haha and even had my brother read Armageddon 2001 #2 first to tell me if anything bad happened to him in it (I don't even know why I thought he was at risk in that issue but he surprisingly did make a one-panel cameo). But around the time he became Arsenal my love for him began to wane. I'm not sure if it was the succession of terrible costumes (there is not a single Arsenal costume I like, and there were many of them) or his ridiculous new 'powers' (he can suddenly master any weapon? despite only having long-time training in a bow?) or the fact that they began to lean really heavily into that 'ladies-man" (ugh) personality (as they also began to do with Green Arrow) but he just got worse and worse during the late 90s and 00s. His stint as Red Arrow gave me a brief glimmer of hope that he was returning to greatness but alas, that dreck Cry For Justice and The Rise and Fall of Arsenal came along and put the final nail in the coffin. AFAIC, killing him off now is a mercy killing. And guess what - they are apparently. In the upcoming Heroes in Crisis. But that's not the Titan death that's got me disappointed. Another hero's death in Heroes in Crisis is.

Tried reading some issues of Justice League and Justice League Dark but couldn’t get into it.

The Heroes in Crisis bloodbath is puzzling. Wasn’t DC trying to restore the old timeline by bringing back Wally and many of his contemporaries? Big sigh

The Titans may be felt as clutter if they want to focus main characters and have only one teir of sidekicks.

One of DC's peculiarities is the sheer size and number of "families". Bat-family, Super-family, Wonder-family, Arrow-family, Flash-family, GL corps... It can be a strength, but not every writer/editor knows how to use that strength.

I saw Sarky's image, if that's the one you saw and yeah, it would seem as though it's hunting season for sidekicks again. DC are a bit schizophrenic on the whole thing. They had families and then looked to bring out strength in individuals at the time of Crisis. Only to fall back into giant ensemble casts. Personally, and I may be completely wrong here, is that the big casts can paper over the writer's inability to write consistently solid solo stories.

Some writers also lack nuance, taking each member of the big cast and reducing him or her to a handful of personality traits - or even worse, to cardboard that fills up the background!

But yeah, he got a bit better after that. And he definitely didn't deserve being ruined in Cry for Justice / Rise and Fall like that.

Jurgens' Teen Titans was a flawed book but I loved it anyway and Joto was absolutely my favorite member of the team. And to think I had to go through the grief of seeing him killed off for a few years once already in that book!

And I thought that his Hot Spot update was a great new costume and name (although I also liked the Swahili callback of Joto too) and loved that it hopefully meant that DC weren't going to consign him to the dustbin of limbo. And at first it didn't seem they were going to; he made an appearance in 52 and was one of Geoff Johns' 'One Year Gap' Titans. But best of all, he was the recipient of a spotlight in a totally random but totally stellar episode of Teen Titans Go. He'd barely appeared in the show at all and then he has a whole episode dedicated to fighting Madame Rouge!? I loved it. Although the ending was so tragic.

And now he's just one of many off-panel deaths in another DC slaughter-fest. I don't know why I still care about what happens to DC characters when Dan Didio killed off the whole universe for me years ago but I can't help it. I think, at the back of my mind, I still feel like I'll start collecting them again.

And now I'm going to take a break from Legion World for a while. Or at least the Spaceopoly forum anyway. Thinking up questions for this place has been taking up too much of my time! haha But I need to diminish my online footprint and refocus my life a little bit so I'm going to be less present. Half right, it was Gar Logan being snippy but not about the number of legionnaires. It actually involved something that those versions of the Legion and the Titans had in common, kind of.

I recall a Byrne cover. He's holding someone by the throat. Wonder Girl in my mind. She's also the strongest and could give Byrne Supes a fight. I'll go with Cyborg, to get torn apart by Supes strength. Gar because Byrne has a doom patrol thing and Starfire as Supes being solar powered might have been played with in Byrne's early run.

I forgot to put a reason in. Yesterday, I'd have gone for mind control too. But today I recall an issue where his powers went wild. That seemed to be an early, if not first, indication of him being a threat. I'm sure he was angry while throttling Wonder Girl. So I'm going with it not really being Superman in there. A mind seap with Titano or something.

Thoth has 3 right and Ibby has two. Winder Girl, Cyborg, Beast Boy. (Winder Girl?)

You have a good memory for images Thoth. Supes does indeed hold Wonder Girl by the throat while holding a separated Cyborg's arm in the other hand and Garfield lying at his feet. The fourth Titan involved does not appear on the cover.

As for why, it was indeed a mind swap but not with a regular villain, just some crippled genius who never appears again.

This was Byrne's first Action Comics story and finished with a single page of Luthor reading the Daily Planet and realising that Clark Kent always got the best Superman stories which makes him wonder what the connection is between the two. This is the lead-up to his big reveal plot where his experts and computers deduce that CK and Supes are the same but he rejects it because he cannot conceive that anyone with Superman's power would ever pretend to be weaker than he is.

So one Titan left to guess.

We're really left with Raven to cure the anger in the genius stile mentioned. I don't remember him at all.

This must have been quite early if it leads into Luther's guys figuring out that Kent was Supes, only to have Luther dismiss them.

There's also Jericho to possess Supes or the villain.

I was going to go with Raven. She's more visual and it ties up the plot nicely. But I think she might have been either missing or part of Blood's group. So I'm guessing Jericho.

Jericho is correct. He possesses Superman's body but knows he can't hold it for long when a crippled guy comes up to explain that he is Superman and his mind has been swapped. They fly back to the scientist's lab where their minds are swapped back, the crippled scientist moans about being weak again and Supes gives a lecture (appropriate but still a lecture) on the many disabled people through history who managed great things anyway instead of just becoming a thug like this guy did.

It's a decent way of splitting it. Pre & Post Judas Contract feels a good fit for me, and I reckon it might be different for lots of people depending on when they started. Pre and Post Nick Cardy is a decent shout too.

Funny how details of stories can be garbled in memory. I've read the Judas Contract once, but don't remember this.

I find that I need to read a story more than 3 times before I can remember the details very clearly. So, I can remember (or at least recognize) most scenes that belong to Crisis on Infinite Earths, for example, because I've read it more than 10 times. And most scenes from the Reboot Legion, I can place, because I've read each issue at least 4 times each. But Judas Contract... the most iconic scenes in the final battle, yes, but many earlier scenes, not really.

One reason I loved Titans/JLA so much is that nearly every character used (including every Titan ever still living, almost) and many former JLAers, had at least one scene / line which showed some personality. Nearly. And nobody had to die for it to be a great story.

that was it! The Technis Imperative. My first introduction to characters like Bumblebee, Flamebird, Argent... It really excelled in keeping a central narrative thread, while using the cast of dozens to create an epic scale without detracting from said main narrative.

I'd definitely recommend the JLA/ Titans mini, stile.

It was Jellyfish. Special, large electrically charged ones too. It was a by-the-numbers- story of sidekick proving himself through the means of his mentor being knocked out somewhere in the story. The only difference in these stories is how stupidly the mentor gets knocked out. Aquaman does OK here, and the Manhunters are a decent threat. This was only a couple of issues from Harbinger going through basically the same plot with Starfire.

intriguing question and story! unfortunately I don't know much about the music of that era, or of the comics of that era. But it's a fun one.

I read a synopsis of this one just a few days ago. I had a post in mind for him.

Considering how Groovy, Gear and Ginchy the Titans were around this time, I'll say that they beat their feet to the Beatles. I'll go with Help! to tie it with the story.

It is the Beatles but not Help! Both are famous Beatles songs and often repeated lines.

Lyrics from the radio appear in two panels. In the first a single line is sung which does have links to the story.

The second panel has a single word repeated three times (big clue).

Incidentally the Separated Man was able to separate his body parts into enormous separate parts, in this case a giant ear trying to listen in to the Titans plans, hence trying to drive it away by loud music. And yes this was only the second appearance of the Teen Titans and the first appearance of Wonder Girl.

It seems the Separated Man was not a lover of "modern" music and they succeeded in driving his giant ear away.

This was an interesting story particularly for the inclusion of Wonder Girl. I suppose most of you know the story of how the Wonder Woman comic had included tales of Diana at three different stages of her life as Wonder Woman, Wonder Girl and Wonder Tot, similar to the appearance of Superman, Superboy and Supertot tales. However the writer of this adventure, Bob Haney, thought Wonder Girl was a separate character and so included her here giving us the new character of Donna Troy (although she wouldn't have that name for a while yet).

Now who do I give the win to? Thoth jumped on the right trail first naming the group and the first song but Ibby finished off with the second. I guess it is Ibby's turn.

Yay! It popped into my head. Considering I'd seen the cover and glanced at the story not long ago, it could have popped in a bit sooner.

Donna's friend Sharon is in a state. She's got amnesia from something she saw in the park. While the Titan's get her memory back, I can tell you that she saw someone get shot. But what was odd about the shooting, that made it particularly traumatic for Sharon?

It was a disembodied gun hand a la Tyr?

No a disembodied gun. It wasn't a normal gun though and there's something about the victim.

She did not know the shooter. It is '60s DC and there's a sci fi theme to the tale.

I'm going to give it to you on this one. Danny Chase was off on his own trying to prove he could outdo the Titans and infiltrated the Royal Flush Gang, thinking he wouldn't be recognized because he doesn't wear a distinctive costume. But he was captured on a picture in the paper (surveillance) posing with the Titans (doing something Titan-y) by Queen, who demanded he be killed.

This is very early in the Teen Titans timeline and involves an organisation that was active and important at the time but rarely gets much publicity these days.

Hint: the Titans were surprised to be asked to join this organisation because they thought they were too young i.e. it is not a specifically youth organisation.

This happened in their very first self-titled comic, Teen Titans #1 (after they had appeared three times in the Brave and the Bold and once in Showcase) and the organisation was only a few years old at the time and relevant to the times.

Let's try one more hint. The Titans mission with this organisation involved them going to a Third World country to assist them with its development, which was the primary purpose of the organisation and still is to this day. That's the one. The Teen Titans were quite surprised since it usually requires a college degree or equivalent. They did have to go some "intensive training" but their help was really requested because the Peace Corps team trying to help build a dam and school somewhere in South America was having trouble. The rest of the story is a bit of fun although to our current eyes its portrayal of the local native americans is a bit off, particularly in their religious beliefs.

Now for a special announcement! I have got my little paws on the ICG Official index to the Titans! All of 'em. Hopefully no more digging through comic boxes for me! I had 2 of them, but this should be a big help for questions.

Misty eyed aside: ICG's release of an Index to the Justice League of America put a stop to my own Justice League index I was putting together, as I got the back issues.

My dad even went to the trouble of creating little quarter page reductions of the covers in the company photocopier. Each page of my book had little clear pockets, so I could slip in the copied covers. I'd then do a breakdown of the issue around it.

ICG's series opened up the whole of the JLA series, as I was being indulged in collecting it. It's still very much part of my JLA comics. Along with Who's Who and Crisis, it was a great time to start reading, while getting immersed in the history of the company.

I don't think I saw any of the other indices at the time. I picked up Legion ones years later, the Crisis ones were part of the Absolute edition, although I just got the issues of those, which is why I got the Titans ones too.

I'll dig 'em out of their little envelope shortly for a new question!

Canon. New Teen Titans vol 1#8 "A Day in the Lives ...". Very early in the first NTT run. Vic has just visited his old girlfriend who now can't bare to look at him and then wanders dejectedly in to Central Park where he gets bonked by a baseball. A kid comes up and asks him for it and is astonished at his metal hand, but instead of being afraid he wishes he had one which would be better than the prosthetic he does have. The rest of the group show s up with their teacher Sarah Simms who had taken the group of kids, all of whom have prosthetics of one type or another, out to play baseball as part of their training. The kids ask Vic to play and Sarah suggests he is probably too busy but Vic decides he hasn't got anything more important than playing with the kids. Sarah would go on to be a new romantic interest for Vic.

ah that tickles my mind! Dear Sarah Simms, I hated that they killed her in Games - thankfully, that is very much NOT in canon, so Sarah Simms is still around somewhere. (she did go out a hero though, with a memorial at the end, but still!)

After all the Titans are collected, Nightwing, Beast Boy, Flash and Raven manage to get free (Raven was never caught, she was some kind of intangible soul being then... anyway!) They began noticing that pretty much every living Titan was around... and they chanced upon these four and kept remarking "wow, someone was VERY thorough"; "the gang is ALL here!"

Quite odd, because Lilith, Mal, and Bumblebee at least were "real" Titans way way back, and usually one would expect the earliest members to be in the forefront. Mal and Lilith at least also had fairly long tenures.

Flamebird i can kinda get as she was part of the adjunct team...

Duela, despite having been a Titan longer than Bumblebee was, was left out and only collected when Cyborg went for Titan's allies (Chris King, Azrael, Frances Kane and a few others were also lumped under allies) - though Duela is the most glaring one.

Got it in one Ibby! It's a plot twist I don't think I gave anywhere near enough credit to at the time. Gar playing around with the helmet, then the terminator appearing, leading up to the non-battle issue.

leading into a rather interesting relationship between Deathstroke and the team... one alluded to in JLA/Titans, where Cyborg sent a pod to collect Deathstroke to help, but he declined - causing the pod to skip over him.

JLA/Titans is great for this... lots of possible questions. in JLA/Titans, Elongated Man commented that a certain building is always in danger of collapsing during every major Crisis. Which city, suburb or neighborhood /street was this building in?

PS I also thought it cool that they brought in so many characters in a way that made sense - like a bunch of JLA reservists showing up to help - it was a global crisis after all!

Thoth obviously has a good memory and is correct. From Teen Titans vol 1 #2, "The Million year old teenager" Garn was a "caveman" from long ago who while fighting an evil giant caveman who had a magic axe was buried with him in clay and ice. Garn recovered first in modern times and was adopted by an elderly gentleman and tried to integrate into school and local culture. His opponent was freed soon after and started causing havoc. Garn, attempting to stop him, became blamed by local authorities as the giant's accomplice. Garn's girlfriend contacted the Teen Titans for help who assisted in the battles and eventually cleared Garn's name. (The giant drowned in a river.) Neither were ever heard from again.

I learnt a new word from this comic. "frug".

Wonder Girl to the other TTs: "Hey, you three - does a girl have to frug with her won magic lasso?" From a comment by Aqualad it seem that it meant dancing but who really knows?

Luthor is not hiding them nor seeking them. In this tale he was an advisor to the Waynes (the previous King and Queen before Jor-El and Lara) but was exiled after the Els saved the Kingdom and showed how Luthor had ignored their warnings of impending doom. Luthor stumbled upon something glowing green which turned out not to be Kyptonite but a cursed Earth-3 type lantern ring which empowered him but also scarred him and rove him mad making him a kind of flying powerful Joker figure.

Kal-El grew up with Bruce but is currently battling grief while coping with the imminent war so not part of this search.

I don't think we have seen any of the Captain Marvel characters so far - although one of those involved does transform through speech.

Martian Manhunter has just been revealed in the latest issue as a rather surprising regular character but is not involved with the hiding or seeking.

A couple of hints. Those doing the hiding are 2 rather well known characters who it makes perfect sense to be ones who help those with powers. The one seeking has powers that are speech activated although slightly different to the main universe. Neither are typical for Titans stories.

It is Ra's Al Ghul! It was rather a surprise in the comic when he transformed into the Demon (the other one, Etrigan, you know what I mean).

I have been quite enjoying this series Dark Knights of Steel. It is slow to come out but the exploration of the setting has been done very well. The starting premise is that Jor-El and Lara escaped Krypton together in his experimental rocket and Lara gave birth to Kal-el shortly after arriving on Earth, an Earth that was set as medieval but with the characters of today we are familiar with. At first they live in seclusion until Jor-El discovers another disaster about to happen, the eruption of a volcano in the kingdom ruled by Thomas and Martha Wayne. After the Els reveal their powers while saving the kingdom they are welcomed and become close friends with the Waynes with Kal and Bruce growing up together. Then when the Waynes are killed in an attack they pass the rulership of the Kingdom on to the Els. Our main story then continues with Bruce and Kal as adults and a growing conflict between their kingdom and others that do not trust the Els such as the Kingdom of Storms (Black Lightnings family) and the Amazons. Lots of imaginatively but believably placed modern day characters acting out in this different setting. I often like elseworlds type stories but this one I feel has been done particularly well. It reminds me of the similar setting of Marvel's 1602, another favourite.
