Always wanted to commit thread-i-cide? Well, this is the place for YOU!!!

Welcome to......

Kill This Thread (XVII: the-one-almost-old-enough-to-vote-but-old-enough-to-watch-dirty-movies-edition)

The following rules were established by Kent at the start of the first 24-hour version, adapted from the original rules by EDE:

The rules:

1. The Basic Idea: Post to this thread, if no one posts after you for 24 hours, you win!

2. Posts that are not direct responses to one of the five preceding posts are ineligible to win. The topic can drift, but no complete non-sequitors. Posts that are responses to non-sequitors are also ineligible to win. Posts that are responses to responses to non-sequitors, and response nses to those posts, etc., become eligible, however.

3. In the event that this thread is locked, there shall be no winner unless a new thread is started for the contest. Furthermore, any post that results in the banning of the poster shall also be ineligible to win.

4. So, more precisely, one wins if one makes a post, and then no one makes another post that's eligible to win for 24 hours.

Will this be a tickle fight?
Posted By: Lard Lad Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/10/17 10:24 AM
That could give one of us a unfair advantage if one happens to be invulnerable to tickles!
Posted By: Invisible Brainiac Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/10/17 10:55 AM
Gasp! now it’s down to a tickle fight!
Posted By: Quislet, Esq Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/10/17 07:36 PM
Wouldn't both the tickler and the ticklee be unable to post while the tickling is going on?
Posted By: Invisible Brainiac Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/10/17 09:21 PM
Gosh, that leaves this thread wide open!
Posted By: Lard Lad Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/10/17 09:24 PM
Yeah! All you others need to get in a 24-hour tickle fight...starting right now! nod

I am good At multi-tasking!
Posted By: Quislet, Esq Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/11/17 02:18 PM
They say that we don't really multitask so much as we do small bits of different tasks one right after the other.
Posted By: Invisible Brainiac Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/11/17 05:14 PM
True. It’s very difficult to actually concentrate on two tasks at the exact same time.

There is also a time delay when we switch from task to task, and this accounts for a lot of the extra time that we need to accomplish things when “multi tasking”
Posted By: Quislet, Esq Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/11/17 06:17 PM
Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so.
Posted By: Lard Lad Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/11/17 07:46 PM
So, what you're saying is....it's time for lunch?
Posted By: Quislet, Esq Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/11/17 09:03 PM
Nobody gets a free lunch.
Posted By: Jfposey Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/12/17 02:45 AM
I missed breakfast so can we make it a brunch?
Posted By: Lard Lad Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/12/17 03:08 AM
I missed lunch. Can we have linner? (Or is that lupper? confused )
Posted By: Invisible Brainiac Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/12/17 09:11 AM
I’m not really sure what supper is. I always just use dinner.
Posted By: Quislet, Esq Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/12/17 02:40 PM
For me, supper was the main meal of the day, eaten in the evening. Dinner is the main meal of the day, but eaten mid-day and usually on Sunday.
Posted By: Invisible Brainiac Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/12/17 07:03 PM
Oh! So dinner is like lunch?
Posted By: Quislet, Esq Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/12/17 07:13 PM
No, lunch is usually a lighter meal,- lots of times just cold sandwiches. A dinner is a hot meal - meat & vegetables that you need a knife and fork to eat.
Posted By: Invisible Brainiac Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/12/17 08:28 PM
Oh, that’s interesting. I was raised to have only “snack” as a generic term for a lighter meal like a sandwich. (in the Philippines was say it is “merienda”)

Then breakfast, lunch and dinner for the three main meals of the day
Posted By: Quislet, Esq Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/12/17 09:30 PM
Supper and dinner were also cooked meals, whereas breakfast and lunch were not cooked meals.
Posted By: Invisible Brainiac Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/12/17 10:58 PM
Breakfasts around the world are interesting. The French make do with some bread or croissants. In the Philippines, it's not a proper breakfast without rice (usually fried rice), eggs, and an assortment of meats.
Posted By: Lard Lad Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/13/17 02:18 AM
In the American South supper and dinner are usually the same thing. Breakfast, lunch and dinner/supper can all be cooked meals or not. Dinner or supper, though, is always a cooked, sit-down meal.
Posted By: Jfposey Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/13/17 02:51 AM
Now I am just plan hungry. Let's just call it blinner.
Posted By: Invisible Brainiac Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/13/17 07:47 AM
time for blinner! though i’m afraid three blinners a day will make us all very fat
Posted By: Quislet, Esq Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/13/17 02:11 PM
I'm not fat. I'm just big boned.

So's a stegosaurus, Giganta!

Ha! Used to be my catch phrase as Lard Lad!

Must say, though...I'm a bit mystified by the stegosaurus/Giganta comment. I mean, are you calling Ibby "Giganta"? confused
Posted By: Invisible Brainiac Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/14/17 01:26 PM
I’ve never been called Giganta before. At least not by non-Asians wink
Posted By: Quislet, Esq Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/14/17 02:31 PM
The stegosaurus (my favorite dinosaur by the way) and Giganta bit - actually the whole bit was from one of Judy Tenuta's routines. She was talking about her roommate Blowsane
Posted By: Invisible Brainiac Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/14/17 04:08 PM
Blowsane. What an exotic name.
Posted By: Quislet, Esq Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/14/17 05:00 PM
She was 2'8", 500 pounds, and smoked. She was like a planet that smoked.
Posted By: Invisible Brainiac Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/15/17 11:45 AM
We should introduce her to Mogo
Posted By: Quislet, Esq Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/15/17 02:42 PM
I am sure that Mogo prefers non-smokers
Posted By: Lard Lad Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/16/17 01:38 AM
There should be some slashfic with Mogo and Ego the Living Planet hooking up! nod

Is the universe ready for more sentient baby planetoids?
Posted By: Invisible Brainiac Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/16/17 08:10 AM
Perhaps Ego and Mogo would use protection.

Do hero/villain romances ever work out?
Posted By: Ann Hebistand Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/16/17 10:09 PM
I'm tempted to say Batman/Catwoman, but I stopped liking Batman in the late 90s.

OTOH, the Earth-2 Batman/Catwoman hero/villainess romance worked out...at least in the sense that Selina really did reform, and their daughter, Helena Wayne aka Huntress was awesome.

Then again, Earth-2 Selina and then Earth-2 Bruce both died horribly, leaving Helena and orphan...and then there was that damn Crisis on Infinite Earths...

AAAAAARGH!
Posted By: Invisible Brainiac Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/17/17 10:08 AM
Happy endings sure are rare.

I was on a walking tour in Prague, learning about the history on Charles Bridge and at the Castle complex. A Turkish lady in the group says, "Why are all the stories so sad?"

A dreaded sunny day
So I meet you at the cemetry gates
Keats and Yeats are on your side
A dreaded sunny day
So I meet you at the cemetry gates
Keats and Yeats are on your side
While Wilde is on mine

So we go inside and we gravely read the stones
All those people, all those lives
Where are they now?
With loves, and hates
And passions just like mine
They were born
And then they lived
And then they died
It seems so unfair
I want to cry

Happy Together

The Turtles

Imagine me and you, I do
I think about you day and night, it's only right
To think about the girl boy you love and hold her him tight
So happy together
If I should call you up, invest a dime
And you say you belong to me and ease my mind
Imagine how the world could be, so very fine
So happy together
I can't see me lovin' nobody but you
For all my life
When you're with me, baby the skies'll be blue
For all my life
Me and you and you and me
No matter how they toss the dice, it had to be
The only one for me is you, and you for me
So happy together
I can't see me lovin' nobody but you
For all my life
When you're with me, baby the skies'll be blue
For all my life
Me and you and you and me
No matter how they toss the dice, it had to be
The only one for me is you, and you for me
So happy together
Ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba
Ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba
Me and you and you and me
No matter how they toss the dice, it had to be
The only one for me is you, and you for me
So happy together
So happy together
How is the weather
So happy together
We're happy together
So happy together
Happy together
So happy together
So happy together (ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba)

Argentina's equivalent of cowboys were known as "gauchos".
Posted By: Invisible Brainiac Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/19/17 03:53 AM
I somehow managed to go on a date with an Argentinian gentleman who spoke very little English. It was quite a test of my Spanish.
Posted By: Lard Lad Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/19/17 11:24 PM
I took 2n years of Spanish in high school and two more semeseters in college. Not even close to fluent. frown
Posted By: Ann Hebistand Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/20/17 01:38 AM
Awwww, don't worry about not being fluent in Spanish, Lardy. We'll always have El Chupacabra. wink hug love

"Sugar, Sugar" was the big hit by the Archies.
Posted By: Invisible Brainiac Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/22/17 03:20 AM
My mom had a cassette tape with that song on it
Posted By: Lard Lad Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/22/17 05:43 AM
Ah...cassette tapes! I don't know how much this was exaggerated, but I've seen headlines that imply that cassette tapes and players have made a comeback because of the popularity of the Guardians of the Galaxy films. Not sure if this is true, but I doubt it's more than a tiny niche comeback that probably far trails behind the enduring appeal of vinyls in certain circles.
Posted By: Invisible Brainiac Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/22/17 01:22 PM
Indeed. I can understand a few super-Starlord fans who might want to use those tapes, but come on! There's a reason cassette taps and floppy disks have given way to better technology...

And cassette tapes are much harder to use than vinyls, too.
Posted By: Quislet, Esq Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/22/17 02:18 PM
But you can rewind a cassette tape with a pencil. Try doing that to vinyl.
Posted By: Invisible Brainiac Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/22/17 05:55 PM
I wonder if anyone reading that will try it
Posted By: Kappa Kid Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/22/17 07:38 PM
I don't think cassette tapes will make a comeback. Vinyl at least has the appeal of the beautiful album art and relatively easy storage since they're so thin. I don't know what appeal cassette tapes hold.
Posted By: Quislet, Esq Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/22/17 07:49 PM
Plus with cassettes, it was impossible to find a particular song unless it was the first song.
Posted By: Invisible Brainiac Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/22/17 08:05 PM
I feel the same way about floppy disks: good riddance

Styx and Stone were two rather forgettable Spider-Man villains co-created by none other than Todd McFarlane. Good thing he has the Venom thing going for him.....

I think this TV version of Spider-Man blows its contemporaneous Amazing Friends show out of the water, but no one I know seems to have ever seen it:

In "Some Like It Hot" Jack Lemmon's boyfriend doesn't mind when he reveals he's really a man.

In White Chicks, one of the characters didn’t care that the two cops lied about being female. He was offended that they lied about being white

Back in the bad old days some states had the one drop rule. That is, if one drop of your blood came from a black ancestor, then you were considered black.
Posted By: Invisible Brainiac Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/28/17 12:48 AM
I’m glad things have changed then. If that were in effect now in the Philippines, a much larger proportion of the population would be considered ethnically Chinese
Posted By: Lard Lad Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/28/17 01:11 AM
Do people in the Philippines actually call it "the Philippines"?
Posted By: Invisible Brainiac Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/28/17 05:04 AM
We usually shorten it to "Pinas", short for the Spanish name, Las Filipinas.

By the way, I've heard foreigners refer to it as "the P.I.", short for "the Philippine Islands". Please don't when speaking to Filipinos; it's also a shortened form of a very, very bad swear word which our "dear" President loves using.

For good reason.
Posted By: Lard Lad Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/29/17 03:02 AM
Also for good reason, "Pinas" reminds me of penis.
Posted By: Invisible Brainiac Re: Kill This Thread XVII - 12/29/17 03:10 AM
A common name/nickname in France is "titi". I had to explain to my classmates that this is Filipino slang for "penis". We had quite a few laughs over it.

Surely the reindeer are entitled to rest breaks as they travel across the whole world. Not to mention whether its right for them to be used in such a fashion at all. I notice that there aren't any relief reindeer, leading me to think that they have to work, even if they feel poorly.
