Continued from the original thread by our pal Lardy/Paladin/Ossifer Taylor/Lardikins!
The rules:
1) Puzzles consist of a word or phrase whose letters have been replaced by blanks to be filled in, along with a category/clue to the word/phrase.
2) Rounds consist of a period between puzzle updates by the puzzle creator. Puzzle updates consist in the puzzle creator filling in correctly guessed letters and a list of incorrectly guessed letters. The frequency of puzzle updates is up to the puzzle creator, but should be roughly once a day or so.
3) Each round, anyone may guess a consonant, regardless of whether they have participated in any previous rounds.
4) Each round, the player who correctly guessed the most frequently occurring consonant in the previous round may guess a vowel. In the case of a tie, no one is allowed to guess a vowel.
5) Each round, any player who correctly guessed a letter in the previous round may attempt to solve the puzzle by guessing the word/phrase.
6) Whoever correctly guesses the word/phrase becomes the new puzzle solver!
I think that's basically it!

Ack! I think I know what this is...
G for Gala
That is correct. Two of my great-nieces had them. I went to one. I assumed that they are popular in the Philippines and that IB would have guessed it.
We don't really celebrate the 15th birthday in the Philippines, the 18th (or debut) is more important.
I actually had no idea what that meant, but it sounded right given the letters we had!
Usually in the US it is a sweet 16 party. However my niece's husband is from Bolivia and it is a big deal on his side of the family. Actually our side doesn't even do a sweet 16 party.
I thought it might be big in the Philippine given the Spanish influence there.
I actually had no idea what that meant, but it sounded right given the letters we had!
It is a coming of age party for girls on or about their 15th birthday. There is a court of attendants (like bridesmaids and grooms) and there are special dances performed.
We do something very similar, but for the 18th birthday. I wonder where we got that... I know Sweet 16 is big in the US, so I always wondered why the special age in the Philippines is 18

Yeah, it's not as well known here either.
I've heard of Tennessee Williams before, and the Fiddler on the Hot Tin Roof... but not the Glass Menagerie.
Ibby, there's "Fiddler on the Roof" and "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof"--two different things.
Ibby, there's "Fiddler on the Roof" and "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof"--two different things.
The first is a musical; the second is a play by Tennessee Williams. Hence my teasing Lardy for not going for the one with the Williams-connection.
Williams is one of the "Big Three" of 20th century American playwrights (with Eugene O'Neil and Arthur Miller), and by far the most important playwright in the Southern Gothic genre, of which I'm a big fan, so when I see "play", his works are one of the first things my mind goes to.
Thanks for the info, guys. I know Fiddler on the Roof - I was Tevye in a school play, and did “If I Were a Rich Man” and the nightmare scene with the butcher’s dead wife...
I’ve heard of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof before too.
I thought there was a third thing combining the two. I don’t know why, I guess I got confused with your posts and my brain fooled itself into thinking there was a third thing.
I loved when Tevye and Maggie the cat sang Sunrise, Sunset.

Um, Edie....you had to have had a correct letter last round to make a guess.
But his guess was correct. What should I do? Reward him the puzzle when the rules weren't followed? Or should I post a new one?
Oh crap! Sorry! I definitely shouldn't get credit for breaking the rules. Not sure how to decide it though.
I'll just post a new puzzle soon.
Ordinarily I would say that anyone else who is eligible solve could post the answer and take it, but since no one is eligible to solve right now, maybe posting another one would work best?
Sorry, I was just so impressed with myself for figuring it out, I just completely forgot the rules!
1) We give it to EDE as these things happen.
2) We all forget EDE's post and the first to nonchalantly put in the right answer gets the next round.
3) Walk the plank!
4) We pretend that the game is ruined so that EDE lives out the rest of his life haunted by guilt.
5) Paladin puts up another quiz as this one is considered NULL and VOID!
I'll go for 1) or maybe 5)
Well, I'm a bit of a stickler for the rules, especially as I made up the Spaceopoloy version of this game. So I will opt to post another puzzle.

Five find-outers and dog by enid blyton
thoth has it! i thought you might get it. this was my favorite series as a kid, even over The Hardy Boys. Fatty was a hoot, with his disguises and silly schemes, and love how the other kids called him out on it. and I laughed out loud at most scenes with grumpy old Clear-Orf the cop
I should add that I found the Five Find-Outers considerably more evitable (because of the humor) than Enid Blyton’s Secret Seven and Famous Five series
Sheesh! How am I supposed to cheat when you use puzzles that I've never heard of?
Why, I’ve asked that same question myself many times
I read a lot of the Five Find Outers as a kid. My brother had at least a few of them before I got them handed to me. It was a while before I even knew there was a Famous Five or a Secret Seven. I thought someone had made a mistake. How many of these gangs could be running around? I think I tried a Secret Seven one, but it made no impact. The disappointment felt by my lack of support turned the Famous Five into the Fearsome Five and all but one of the Secret Seven formed the Secret Six. I'd never put the "and dog" onto the end of it either until I worked out the first part of the answer. Oh, and someone bought me a few of these a couple of years ago for my birthday.

I was wondering what had launched MIR into space.

Your "C" was a really good pick, though. I felt like it would make it obvious if no one solved it this round.
Thanks, EDE. I mostly guess common consonants that could be used to make a word, given the letters already revealed. Glad the C was there somewhere
I actually didn't know who Elon Musk is. In fact I wasn't sure if he was a person or company. But something about the puzzle sparked a memory, though I wasn't sure. After I submitted my solution, I looked at his Wikipedia article and skimmed it a little. On the surface he seems like a potentially very important person if he follows through on his lofty goals.

That is correct.
I wonder if Blacula knew it.
Wpw, that's some good intuition and logic, Lardy. I would have needed a couple more letters filled in before guessing Belgium.
I knew it had to do with travel, and I was pretty sure it was Europe. Before the B, I had no inclination toward Belgium at all. I wasn't even sure if it was a city or country in Europe. But Belgium fit and seemed to ring a bell. After I posted my solution here, I only then checked my answer to see if I was right. If I'd been wrong, I would have stopped playing this puzzle.
Both Paladin and Invisible Brainiac need to rent the movie and watch it.

ZULU DAWN!
I cannot tell you how many times I was forced to watch that film growing up! My brothers were obsessed with it! One of them even gave a school talk about it!
Blacula has it! I know I've seen Zulu a couple of times, but I'm not sure about the Dawn, shot (if you'll pardon the pun) much later on.
We were very lucky with our guesses in the last round otherwise that game could have lasted a lot longer I think.
The movie is pretty good IIRC. I remember hating it when I was young but grew to appreciate it as I got older. It's a lot more somber and scholarly and serious than the more 'action movie heroism' of the earlier Michael Caine film that it's a prequel to (
Zulu) I think. And I remember always being sad that...

It's not obscure enough as Blacula gets it. Jude the Obscure looks at hypocrisies in class, education and marriage in Victorian times. Many of his points are just as valid, even if the goalposts have moved a little. Espousing lovely Christian values, the Bishop of Wakefield apparently threw his copy into the fire.
Mainly I just enjoy Hardy's writing style, tuning out far from the madding crowd.

My Guess:
Thomas A. Edison
Continued from the original thread by our pal Lardy/Paladin/Ossifer Taylor/Lardikins!
The rules:
5) Each round, any player who correctly guessed a letter in the previous round may attempt to solve the puzzle by guessing the word/phrase.
I think that's basically it!
I think Rule 5 could be interpreted to allow a guess on the first round.
It's not in the "official" rules, but we've agreed to allow guesses before any letters are revealed in the past. It's allowed.
It's not in the "official" rules, but we've agreed to allow guesses before any letters are revealed in the past. It's allowed.
I thought so. And, of course, if I am wrong, I can only guess a consonant in the next round.
It'll be interesting to see if Quis is right or not. When I think of Edison, I think of him either by his first and last name or by his entire name with the "Alva" not abbreviated. Maybe they include the initial usually in Blacula's native Australia. Don't know.
I mean, even Thomas F. Wilson (Back to the Future's Biff Tannen and his assorted relatives) would fit this puzzle but is unlikely. I'm not guessing Thomas F. Wilson, btw!
This discussion is very triggering for me because I think I was one of the first, if not THE first, people in this game to have someone correctly solve their puzzle without any letters way back when EDE solved my A MAN A PLAN A CANAL: PANAMA near the beginning of the first round. And I thought that was going to be such a fun, difficult puzzle too.
So obviously there's precedent for it. But fortunately for me this time (and unfortunately for Quis) THOMAS A. EDISON is not the correct answer. Like Paladin, I do not normally associate him with a middle initial/name but it's funny that this topic has come up now because his middle name was actually the answer to a crossword puzzle I was doing last weekend and I had no idea what it was!
So on with the show!

And Paladin just crushed his enemies, saw them driven before him, and heard the lamentations of their women!
Yes, it is Robert E Howard!
I've had a book of his short horror stories next to my bed for like two years now and I am verrrrrrry slowly making my way through it.
The writing is florid and fun in that old-fashioned pulpy way but yikes are there a lot of pro-eugenics undertones to a lot of them. Almost every hero is a white (usually of Scots ancestry) man and every villain usually has some sort of almost imperceptible distinguishing feature (often the eyes) that marks them as mixed race, and therefore evil. Sometimes the 'race' that they're mixed with is some ancient evil inhuman primitive race, rather than anything real-world, but still, the constant juxtaposition the pure, unadulterated, unspoiled white hero next to an evil 'other' is eyebrow-raising. It does come across as Howard more being a product of the attitudes of his era rather than the polemic of some Klan member though, so hopefully he would have evolved if he'd lived to today.
Over to you, Paladin.
^^That's a problem shared by pretty much the entire spectrum of Weird Tales writers. I'm currently reading Seabury Quinn, and it's hard to read any of his descriptions of other races/religions without rolling your eyes at the very least.

Ibby is indeed correct!

(Seriously, was it naive of me to have assumed that a Brit like you would have seen this film?!?!

No, I am a shunned outcast to my peers here too .
I've seen a couple of their old sci fi movies like Tron and the Black Hole. They might have done a Jules Verne thing. The Rocketeer and I guess Star Wars as they have the rights to that. I did see the Incredibles years after its release. That's about it I think.

Yay!
I love all three of those films too. And Substitutiary Locomotion was quite a treat to listen to - and to watch
I finally just had to put in my old B&B DVD last night and give it a re-watch. I still absolutely loved it. I was especially captivated by the 10-minute "Portobello Road" music/dance number. It was such a joy to behold and made me wish I was in the midst of it all. Accept no substitutes--the longer version of this movie, with the full Portobello Road sequence and more songs and scenes, is well worth the time. Plus, between this movie and Mary Poppins, I kind of still want David Tomlinson to be my dad!
I just wrote a small piece on B&B on "What are you watching?", btw. It mostly re-hashes what I wrote here, but I thought I'd share the love some!

It is. I thought the fairly common words offset the obscurity of the film. I was watching a horror film and it airlifted in additional characters in the final third of the movie. It reminded me of They Came From Beyond Space. The main character in TCFBS nips off to visit his friend in the last quarter of the film. A friend who appears out of nowhere, happens to live nearby and happens to have the technological solution to the film. TCFBS has a lot of British sci-fi tropes, such as mind controlling invaders which helps to keep the budget to a minimum.

It's one of those cities that appear in poetry, Poe's Tamerlane for example. Like you, I know it most for its ancient silk road status. It has this lovely, hazy, almost mythical feel to it in our literature. It also seems to be one of those cities that's attractive enough to always be a target for a conqueror.
It's always been an important city, yeah. And I've also heard about all the poems and stuff it inspires.
It's also supposed to be a melting pot of different cultures, partly brought about by its status as a major trading center.
Sigh... I really want to visit...

Arrgghhhh! The stress! OK I'm just going to guess:
CARDINAL ROCHELIEU?
I think looking it up for the correct spelling is OK.
That is not the correct spelling. Blacula gets one more guess before everybody else (aka thoth lad)
I think it will take me about five more guesses to go through all the vowel combinations there haha so I'll let TL jump in first if he knows it.
P.S. Thanks for the second chance but I hate looking up answers in game threads and crosswords and so on. The victory never feels earned.
I had it guessed, but hadn't actually got round to trying to spell it. I'm the same about looking it up for spelling.
I think it's Richel...hmmm...checks what Blacula put...that's looks good enough for me...Richelieu...
I'm happy enough if it's given to Blacula though, even if it turns out to be my spelling. He was first and I pinched half of my spelling from his answer.
you guys are all wonderful
OK, but it would not be 5. as all the Es and As have been put in place.
No one has answer so the puzzle goes to Blacula.
It is Cardinal Richelieu
I think thoth lad did sort of put that didn't he? Although he did leave out the position. Titles matter TL! Poor old Richelieu didn't spend all that time as a lowly bishop just for you to ignore the effort!
OK I'll be back soon when I think of a topic.
I'm glad I passed the victory to Blacula before I wasn't awarded it.

This is one of those games that is not well known; but with enough letters filled in, I think any English speaker can guess it.

I have absolutely no idea. I will keep guessing but it could take a while to go through the alphabet.
B for Boulder (or Bolder).
Or we could just say Ibby won this by fooling us and you can go again?
If Quis is OK with it, I think this is a good suggestion. After all, Quis can't guess anymore.
I am ok with that.
I never heard of the game Empires and Puzzles
Me neither. Glad I didn't work through the alphabet. That would have taken a while. You win Ibby. Have another go.
It's a mobile game that is highly addictive. I thought this would be guessable because the words are common English words.

David Tennant as The Doctor
Ah, I *was* wondering who The Waiter was.
Was the third word “as” or “is”?
IB has it
That was quick. Good job Ibby.
Thanks. I don't watch Doctor Who, but I've heard David Tennant thrown around a lot. I thank Facebook for much of my pop culture knowledge, including of Game of Thrones and Pokemon, simply because so many people post spoilers and memes on my news feed...

I'm not sure what we decided to do, in case there are no consonants left. I think stile86 should be allowed to solve though?
