I really should have been posting about this here all along... but the one I finished putting up just a few minutes ago was what really inspired me to come here and start this thread.

It's Alberto Breccia's 1974 version of "THE TELL-TALE HEART", which was published in ALTER LINUS #9 (Milano Libri Edizioni / Italy / Sep'75), and reprinted MANY times since... but never, as far as I know, in English... UNTIL NOW.

http://professorhswaybackmachine.blogspot.com/2015/05/poe-1975-pt16.html

From my blog-- in reference to Alberto Breccia's "TELL-TALE HEART" (1974-75)...

"As I worked on this, it slowly started to dawn on me that this single 11-page story is probably the very thing that "inspired" Keith Giffen to imitate, BADLY, from the panel layouts, to the miminalist drawing, to the lighting, to the repetitive panels and their "timing", when he was working on the infamous "Five Years Later" run of DC's LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES. I cannot for the life of me envision anything LESS appropiate for a utopian future science-fiction series. Would to GOD he had never done such a horrible, misguided thing. It's over 25 years ago, and the wretched horror of those issues still haunts me. Oh well.

But, back to Breccia... "

Thanks Prof. My dad's a big Poe fan, so I've read any number of comic adaptations down the years. Looking forward to looking at the links this weekend.

MARVEL CLASSICS COMICS #28 (May'77)
"A Cask Of Amontillado"
art by Michael Golden

http://professorhswaybackmachine.blogspot.com/2015/05/poe-1977-pt-4.html

Looking at Mike Golden's work all cleaned up, I suddenly realize that certain periods of Keith Giffen's work, he must have been channeling a bit of Golden (Giffen seems to have been schizo when it came to his art style, every other year he was "doing" some other artist). This actually reminds me of Giffen-Mahlstedt, early in his 1st LEGION run.

I can hardly believe I've spent 7-1/2 months on this project and still feel like I'm only getting started. I think the variety of talent involved keeps me going.
Posted By: profh0011 Re: EDGAR ALLAN POE - 08/03/15 04:15 AM
My jaw is dropping right now. My friend In Brazil, Toni Rodrigues, just came through in a manner and to an extent to which I never even dreamed of, and which exceeded any possible expectations I might have had.

He just e-mailed me-- in ONE go-- the contents of 4 different Brazillian comics, containing no less than 8 POE stories I didn't have before! 8 !!!!!!!!!! I'm absolutely astonished.

Among them was the Manoel Ferreira "RED DEATH", possibly the single story I have done more online searches for than any other, since I first learned of its existence.

This is just incredible. At the rate I'm, going, I won't even get to the stuff from Italy until September... at the earliest.

Until 2006, Battaglia held the record for having done the most Poe adaptations by a single comics artist. 2nd place was tied at 9 apiece by Gahan Wilson (in 1990), Bill D. Fountain (in 1995) and Horacio Lalia (between 1998 and 1999).

MISTERIOS DE CUARTO CERRADO (Mysteries Of Closed Rooms)
cover by LEANDRO FERNANDEZ (Pictus / Argentina / 2014)

8 comics adaptations of stories from Arthur Conan Doyle, Wilkie Collins, Gilbert K. Chesterton, Jacques Futrelle, and of course, Edgar Allan Poe.

The stories I got this for were "THE PURLOINED LETTER" illustrated by Oscar Capritso, and "THE MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE" illustrated by Leandro Fernandez.

A special thanks must go to Delfino Maroni at the QuioSquito online book store in ARGENTINA. The site is really set up to attract foreign sales, and he went way beyond the pale to make my purchase as pleasant as possible. The international shipping was a lot more than it could have been, but I specifically wanted the National Postal System, as it was the only way I could make sure it was delivered to my new PO BOX, instead of my porch. Too much chaos of late in my neighborhood, and the added expense at BOTH ends is to ensure I eliminate a lot of STRESS related to it.

JOYAS DE LA LITERATURA 17
cover by F. SAMANIEGO
(Novedades Editores / Mexico / November 15, 1984)
CUENTOS DE TERROR:
"LA MUERTA ROJA" / Version 20
"LA CITA" ("THE APPOINTMENT") / ("THE ASSIGNATION") / Version 1
"METZENGERSTEIN" / Version 8
"EL CUERVO" / Version 21
Adaptations by Remy Bastien Jr. / Text by Mecedes Arce B. /
Art by ALFONSO MARTINEZ

These things rarely ever turn up on Ebay, and when they do, I have to JUMP on them, or they're gone... and they may not turn up again!

I've been slowly compiling indexes (and cover mages) of these 2 series: NOVELAS INMORTALES (in B&W) and JOYAS DE LA LITERATURA (in color). There are literally around 900 issues of each, and most of them I have never laid eyes on, nor are they indexed anywhere in any comprehensive form. I'm hoping to change that. But in the meantime, I have to keep an eye out.

My latest acquisition & cover restoration:

TALES FROM ETERNAL WORLDS #1
(Rogue Comics / Ireland / February 2019)
cover by Oisin Roche

This is my very FIRST comic from Ireland. It's a magazine-size "TPB" format, with painted covers (front and back) and a contents page that clearly mimicks a design from the Warren books. It's entirely the work of ONE artist, Oisin Roche, and it's one of the STRANGEST books I have ever laid eyes on. I can tell this guy knows how to draw, but his inks / finishes are just... BIZARRE. The stories (by a variety of writers, including Poe) are, if anything, even more bizarre.

With some of the crazy S*** I've seen in the last few years, this isn't the most disturbing, but I honestly think if it hadn't been for a 5-page adaptation of "Silence" (one of Poe's most obscure, indefinable works), I doubt I would have gone after this. The Poe story has the MOST accomplished art, by far. The rest meanders somewhere between "ethereal" and "unfinished" somehow.

I'm glad Morten F. Thomsen pointed this out to me. Being it's from such a small company, I figured there might be a limited print run, which was why I jumped on it so fast. But I guess part of me is hoping this guy, if he does more issues, DOESN'T do any more Poe. This one book is more than enough of his work, for me. (I hate sounding negative, but I am trying to be honest.)

This is HUGE. I've just polished off the FINAL story from Taika. After this, if I tackle any more Taika stories, they'll either be if I get ahold of a pair of comics I currently have fuzzy scans of, or, if I decide to translate some "Dracula" episodes. I've been working on Taika, off-and-on, for over 4-1/2 YEARS, ever since I first found Luiz Saidenberg's version of "The Black Cat". Toni Rodrigues really helped kick it into high gear when he e-mailed me 8 complete stories, all HIGH-RES scans from the original 60s comics. It'll be great to FINALLY be able to move forward, to other things, from other countries.

This turned up as a reprint from 1973 at the Banca Dos Gibis Brazucas blog, thanks to Flavio Barbier. If anyone can help me identify where it was ORIGINALLY published, you'll have my thanks (and credit at the blog).

"EL ESCARAJO DE ORO" / Version 17

This was the very first of these books I ever saw online, 4 or 5 years ago. But until a couple weeks back, NOBODY had ever had one up for sale! This was half of an Ebay auction, where I didn't NEED the other book... but put in for it anyway. About 6 days later... I "won" the auction, as the ONLY bidder. I could have done without the suspense.

The color plate registration on this cover is not very good... a shame, as it's otherwise a gorgeous piece of work. the color ion the INTERIOR story is also pretty gorgeous. The big question is, will I ever get around to processing this book to put it up?

IN THE SHADOW OF EDGAR ALLAN POE
cover by STEPHEN PARKE (Vertigo / DC / October 1, 2002)

This may be one of my LEAST-FAVORITE items I've gotten ahold of, in my entire mammoth Poe project. Which is rather shocking. It's a BOGUS "Poe biography", which not only adds a horrific, supernatural element to his real-life misery, but also takes any hopeful, uplifting elements of his relationships and DRAGS THEM THRU THE DIRT.

I guess this is what "Vertigo" books tended to be at DC. The only "Vertigo" I've actually bought in the past was the run of "SANDMAN MYSTERY THEATRE", and while I enjoyed the crime element and the slowly-building character relationships, on at least one instance I wrote in a letter to complain about the EXCESSIVE PERVERSITY of some of Matt Wagner's stories. (I got a response from the editor... who apparently mis-interpreted what I was saying. Very odd.)

When I first started this project, and for the longest time in, I had no intention of dealing with Poe biographies. I've since changed my mind... but THIS one... a purely-fictional biography, may have been stretching that point too far.

NOT reccomended... unless you like reading stories that make you wanna kill yourself by the time you're done.

Okay, a week late on scanning & processing, but... MY LATEST ACQUISITION (and minor cover clean-up)...

PANICO #3
(Safari Editorial, S.A. / Mexico / 2000 ?)
"Enterrado Vivo" ("The Premature Burial")
Adaptation & Art by Ruben Jaimes

This publisher is a real mystery. Apart from ads on a variety of sites (including Ebay) by ONE seller who got his hands on a number of titles from them, I have not been able to find ANY info about them ANYWHERE online.

I have to make a wild guess that the book came out sometime between 1990 - 2000, based entirely on a photo of a cell-phone in a PHONE SEX advert on the back cover. (Yes, that's what I said.)

I just happened to see the cover on Ebay by dumb luck. I couldn't miss the title "Enterrado Vivo", or the cover painting obviously based on the poster for 'X-- THE MAN WITH X-RAY EYES" with Ray Milland, made the same year as Corman's "THE PREMATURE BURIAL".

Yes, the story is very loosely based on Poe's story (though his name is not mentioned anywhere in the book), it seems slightly inspired by the Corman film, but it's also partly... a WESTERN. Go figure.

I couldn't get the sticker off, I wasn't even going to try, and while it looks a bit beat-up, I decided the best thing was to just adjust the brightness & contrast slightly, and leave the rest of it AS-IS.

This book is, oddly, 4" wide x 5-5/8" high. So, bigger than a "mini-comic", but smaller than a "digest".
