Awesome! Another indication that Fall is here is Lardy's NFL thread! Man, I'm pumped for football this year.
I'll take the Giants for tonight and get back to the rest shortly.
(Also--awesome to see Chuck playing!)
I know this is crazy, but my boss has a $300 bet with one of the guys who works next store that the Jets will lose 7 out of their first 8 games. Yikes.
I don't think he's too far off to be honest. We both root for the Jets but neither of us is a true Jets fan.
Wow. haven't reached halftime yet and both teams seem to be competing for "Most inept team 2012".
Wonder how the replacement refs will affect the season if they do not get this thing straightened out.
The refs who did tonight's game did a pretty darn good job, I'd say.
And--damn! The Cowboys kicked the Giants' ASSES?!?!
Okay, truth is I fell asleep in the third quarter cause both were playing like there were tunnels in their defense for the other team.
cowboys won, but from what I saw...both gonna suffer this season.
Ok, already lost one because of the Giants. Thought they both looked weak.
Chicago - though if I thought Luck was starting I'd say Colts
Minnesota - but I'm not convinced
Buffalo
Houston
New England
Detroit
New Orleans
Cleveland
Atlanta
Green Bay - best game of the week though
Seattle
Carolina
Pittsburgh
Baltimore
OaklandĀ
The first 3 weeks are so unpredictable in the NFL! Should be very interesting.

Luck IS starting, isn't he? That's what I've heard pretty much all along, at least. You've heard differently?!?!
In any case I think Chicago at home will be too much for them. Colts offense may look okay, but all I've heard is that their defense should be atrocious.
Isn't it the same D as last year? It was preeeeety bad.
I thought for sure I heard he was starting beginning week 3 or so? I'm a fan of his and RG3--hope they both succeed in the NFL.

It may not have been pretty, but it was a W!
How about the Jets? Wow.
And RG3 killed it today. Good for him!
Packers / 49ers has been good. Sloppy in places on both teams but still a good game.
I was *at* the Jets game! But uh, I'm a Bills fan, so ... yeah, that kinda sucked....
Jets definitely surprised. A lot of people were predicting the Bills to make the playoffs and the Jets to be a train wreck! (Both could still happen, but we shall see....)
RG3 was most def AWESOME! That game was playing over here, and I couldn't believe how well he did in the hostile environment that is the Super Dome--and in his first start! He really showed up the other four rookie QBs (including Luck) who, arguably, didn't have nearly as tough tests in their first outings.
Niners look like the early team to beat in the NFC. Jim Harbaugh was a GREAT hire as head coach!

My Panthers looked pretty bad at the Bucs, as well. Not sure if the Bucs D was THAT good or if the Panthers O is gonna be THAT bad this season. I hope it was opening day jitters!
BTW, Drake, this game is open, so if you wanna jump on for the Week 2 picks, please do!

I'll take the Packers Thursday night and get to the rest later. I must say, however, that I think the Bears have a very realistic shot at winning this one. They looked really good last week.
Yeah, I think it'll be a much better game than I would have thought 2 weeks ago.
Game of the week might be Lions / 49ers.
(Worst game Raiders / Dolphins?)
Well, the Lions better play a HELL of a lot better than they did last Sunday if they want to claim victory over the Niners! I think the Niners will beat the Lions handily at Candlestick (or whatever it's called these days...
).
I think the best games to watch this week should be Broncos/Falcons and Baltimore/Philly.
A dark horse game of the week could be TB/Giants. This should show whether TB's defense is for real. Indy/Minnesota could be a fun watch with Luck vs. Ponder.
Tennessee/SD and Raiders/Dolphins hold zero interest for me.
Baltimore looked REAL good this past week. They may at long last have an offense that matches their defense. I think they'll take the Eagles.
Hmmm...I should make a bet of some kind with Mr. Lardy there about the Lions / 49er's.

Hooooboy did my choices suck this week. As for last night's game...John Fox...shut the hell up! I actually tried to watch that mess, but fell asleep with it still 20 to 7 because he couldn't stop trying to intimidate the refs. I'da kicked his ass outta the game.

The Giants are one of the most frustrating teams to predict. They lose when they shouldn't, they win when they shouldn't.

Toughest one for me was Denver / Houston. Ultimately, Houston hasn't proven themselves against anyone that good yet, and Manning at home will be wanting to make a statement.
I see we all have caught on to the fact the Ravens generally own the Pats, and they'll def want revenge for the playoffs last year.

The Giants are one of the most frustrating teams to predict. They lose when they shouldn't, they win when they shouldn't. [/b]You wanna talk about the Tigers (Baseball) some time? They excel at winning against teams they shouldn't
and loosing to teams a little league team could beat.
I only acknowledge the existence of one baseball team: the Yankees.
Oh yeah, I've heard of them...we tend to beat them a lot.
Yankees... buying more championships than anyone.
Crazy, CRAZY week in the NFL, right guys? What did you guys find most surprising? San Fran falling to the Vikes? Saints going 0-3? Cards going 3-0? Pittsburg, New England and Detroit being under .500?
Honestly, I'm not really surprised by any of it. I'm enjoying what little I get to see. Crazy as it seems, football is more football right now with the replacement refs. The NFL had gone so hollywood that it was all slick and glamor. Now, there's some real dirt and mud on the field, so to speak.
Hell, the running game's making a return...I guess that's the biggest for me. It's really not a surprise since the pendulum can't swing too far without there being some sort of correction, but I'm enjoying it. If I played, I'd be the grunt on the ground, not the prima donna's runnin' round.
I also love moments like what we got last night: Torrie Smith having the game of his life on the same day his brother died in a motorcycle accident. There's just no other stage like sports for moments like this. I hate that he lost his brother, but Torrie's moment will touch fans' hearts for a long time.
That was good. a human side to it. I still love me some brutality, though.
Okay, back to the game now that Castle is over.
Well, folks, that was a bizarre controversial ending to the Monday Night Football game. Wow.
I think I may have to avoid Sportcenter and ESPN radio the rest of the week because they're gonna run this thang into the ground!

I got no words for last night. I'm honestly so angry about football right now I'm considering not watching anymore games until the real refs are back.
I'm annoyed I'm this mad about sports.
Football that can change on the idiotic call of a replacement.
NHL locked out.
Pistons suck...not seeing that change any time soon.
Tigers seem to be trying not to make the playoffs.
Sigh...sports are a chore right now.
I don't see the referees as a option to pick in week three.

I'm a casual fan of the Jets--root for them though they're not my favorite (or even second favorite team). And man, they are freaking ridiculous to watch. It's not too difficult to see why a Jets fan might throw the remote through the TV.
Meanwhile, the Patriots reminded everyone why they're ALWAYS among the best teams in football.
Heartbreaking last minute on the Carolina game. Panthers had Atlanta pinned on their own 1 yard line with zero time outs. Matty Ice immediately throws a 60-year prayer that gets answered. Then, it's a series of gains to give kicker Bryant a fairly easy FG in the Georgia Dome.
Damn. Panthers seriously outplayed the Falcons the second half, but all that matters is the final score.

My first try at this went surprisingly well well; let's see if I can keep it up ...
Last week there were only a handful of games which appeared (to me) to have clear favorites; I thought most of them could easily go either way. But I played my hunches, and most of them paid off.
This week's matchups seem (again, to me) to include more "obvious" favorites than last week's; it will be interesting to see if there is more or less consensus in people's picks.

I'll go against the grain and pick St. Louis for Thursday night's game. They're at home, they're competitive this year and they've got Jeff Fisher for a head coach. Should be a good game and a gut-check for both teams.
I'll go Arizona, since every time I pick an upset winner, I seem to jinx it.
Hm. The Rams aren't letting me down to this point. A few minutes into the 4th quarter, they currently lead the Cards 17-3!

I considered picking Cleveland last week (they'd been showing signs of life), but just about everybody else surprised me. This week, though, I can see a lot of these matchups going either way, so at least I won't be surprised if I get a bunch of them wrong.

same here. this was the turnover weekend for me. There's usually one weekend where the logical pick becomes the broken, bloodied, dead in the water, pick. Teams that should win, don't. Those that shouldn't, do, and then there's the Jets.

And their season was so promising.
Sorry I missed my picky guys. This is the weekend we're moving to our new house (did I even tell anyone about take yet?) and it's just been crazy.
I'll take the Giants for tomorrow.
Cobes, I completely understand. We are STILL moving into our since I'm the only one that can do it, and I'm working full time at the dealership now. Hope you are enjoying the new house as much as we are. Now, if only we could get the cable hooked up.

***Special shout-out to myself for being the only one to predict Washington's upset of the Giants on MNF! The Ginats are an up-and-down team who tend to follow big, big wins with letdown losses. They don't really seem to like having great records going into the playoffs, but they know that once they're in, they can win it all.
This, however, in no way is meant to downplay the tremendous, exciting rookie phenom that is RG3!

Yeah, between this game and the Thanksgiving game, the Lions have to feel badly snakebitten. I hope they don't fire their coach, though. I think he deserves another year despite how this one's turned out.
I agree about Schwartz Lardy. Thing is, if you look at last year...we got the bounces and breaks that we are not getting this year. The way it goes sometimes. Sometimes you get the breaks, sometimes you don't.
There has been a lot of things contributing to their losses this year. A lot of those games should not have come down to the final play really. Detroit has had plenty of chances to win these games outright, but cannot seal the deal.
Also, given Mr. Fords track record, the coach will be around for several more years no matter what.
Broncos over Raiders on Thursday ... which is about as close to a sure thing as we'll get this season ... most of the other games this week are going to be tough calls.

I wanted to pick the Bengals over the Eagles tonight.

Last week, I picked pretty conservatively: in every game that had a clear favorite, I went with the favorite.
This week, I'm picking a couple of upsets!
Buccaneers at Falcons Falcons
Jets at Bills Bills
Ravens at Bengals Bengals
Browns at Steelers Steelers
Bears at Lions Lions That's one ...
Jaguars at Titans Jaguars
Eagles at Giants Eagles ... that's the other.
Panthers at Saints Saints
Texans at Colts Texans
Packers at Vikings Packers
Rams at Seahawks Seahawks
Dolphins at Patriots Patriots
Chiefs at Broncos Broncos
Raiders at Chargers Chargers
Cardinals at 49ers 49ers
Cowboys at Redskins Redskins
Speaking of upsets: who would have imagined that the Texans could hold Adrian Peterson to under 100 yards rushing, and still manage to lose the game?
And speaking of the Vikings: if I understand the way this works, I'm picking them to make the playoffs even though I expect them to lose on Sunday, because I also expect the Bears, Cowboys and Giants to lose.
Falcons
Bills
Bengals
Steelers
Bears
Titans
Giants
Saints
Texans
Packers
Seahawks
Pats
Broncos
Chargers
49ers
Redskins
I just realized all you guys picked using the team names when usually we say the city. So I figured I'd jump ok the bandwagon Lardy started.
Yeah, I picked the Lions, even though I knew they would end up loosing. Why...because they're my team. For better or worse.
I do it every week

And the final standings of Lardy's NFL Pick 'em Game 2012-13.....
1) Bicycle Repair Man: 140/207 (67.6%)
2) Cranky McBasstard: 150/223 (67.3%)
3) Lardy: 169/253 (66.8%)

6) Dev-Em: 139/254 (54.7%)
Congrats to BRM! You hereby have bragging rights until next year!
Seriously, guys, it's been another fun season. Enjoy the playoffs, and feel free to speculate here about who will represent their conference in the Super Bowl and who will be the last team standing to hoist the Lombardi Trophy! (So far, we know it won't be Cincinnati or Minnesota...
)
Personally, I'd like to see Peyton Manning do it again with the Broncos and become, I believe, the first starting quarterback to win a championship on two different teams!
I'd like to thank the Academy ...
Looks like we're going to get Brady vs. Manning in the AFC Championship game, but the NFC is much tougher to call.
So much for Brady vs. Manning. This could be the Ravens' last chance to go to the Super Bowl for a while. Let's see if they can step up.
In the NFC I hope San Fran takes it. Pretty sure Atlanta will lose big to whomever they play (most likely the Pats) if they make it thru.
(Rick or other moderator---please de-headline this thread!)
Done. It was a great run this year. Sorry I havent participated as much lately. Lot of things keep getting in the way. But I'll be here next year hopefully.
Is there going to be a pick 'em game this season? I've looked around, and haven't seen a new thread.
Just in case, let me get my pick for tonight in: I think the Broncos will beat the Ravens.
I'll take the Broncos as well.
I got in too late. It's currently R-14, B-7. How bout for this weekend?
Okay, find the rest of Week 1's schedules
here, and post your picks before 1 p.m. EST on Sunday, 'kay?
(Figures you bitches wouldn't let me take this year off!

Home Field Advantage week; I'm only picking two road teams to win.
Man. I hate to say this, guys, but I just don't think I'm up to administering this thing this year. I don't even know why, but I wasn't feeling it before the season began. It's not necessarily a whole lot of work, but it takes some dedication to keep up with from the get-go, especially with Thursday games every single week.
If anyone wants to take up the reins, start a new thread or whatever, I'm perfectly fine with it. I'll probably even participate by doing picks. I just don't want to administer it all this year.
I feel like I'm letting everyone down, but I just can't give you guys the dedication you need to make this go smoothly. Sorry, guys.
Well, I can live without the game, and since I was the only one to post a full set of picks for week 2, I suspect others can live without it, also. I'll be busy with rehearsals in October and November, so I couldn't guarantee to keep up with administration of the game every week, myself.
Sorry, guys. I've been sick since last week.
