While the LSH appearance on Supergirl is getting a lot of attention, I just wanted to point out that I dug the premiere of the CW's newest DC super-show quite a bit!

I got it on DVR. Just have to get around to it. I heard it's stylish and different-feeling from the other CW supes.

What did you like about it, Eryk?

I thought it did a good job of capturing the feel of the 70s Black Lightning series (which is the only one I've read), but updated and relevant to the contemporary world. The central dilemma of whether he can do more good as Jefferson Pierce, principal, or Black Lightning, vigilante, is an interesting one, as is his need to balance his responsibility to his family versus his super-heroics. The writing was top-notch, and more mature than the other CW shows. It's incorporation of social issues seemed organic and natural rather than forced (as opposed to, for example, Supergirl's attempts to be socially relevant, which are often eye-rollingly bad). It's got a nice cast, and did a great job of already establishing a bunch of background mythology while leaving a great deal more to be revealed.

I had very little in the way of expectations going into this show, but I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Cool. I'll give it a try.

I really liked Black Lightning!

I thought it was well done and my favorite of the CW shows though I haven't been that invested in any except Legends.

it's a bit more serious and adult than the other CW offerings. I like how he's a dad and is forced out of retirement as Black Lightning. I also liked how he has to juggle his life as a principal and that he and his ex wife really respect each other rather than some soap opera back stabbing. Plus the daughters might get powers!

The show introduces things he faces as a black man in this town and those are sobering but not at all poorly done. Also, he's not some super hero ideal and he loses his temper and is a bit too rough with the bad guys straddling a line between pissed off and anti-hero. My first inclination is to compare it to Luke Cage mostly because of the music that is similar but these shows aren't alike and Black Lightning is much more relevant to real people. It could easily be a show without super powers.

I just watched the first 2 episodes last night. This is a quality, deep show that really is nothing like the other CW supes at all! That's not a slam on those shows, btw, but it is good to have something that feels like more of its own thing than just another slide in the show.

For one thing, it is shot very differently. It feels a lot more like a major network show in its film quality and camera work. I'm no expert on this subject, but it seems immediately apparent from the moment the first episode begins. (Maybe someone can explain this better?)

Also, there's am immediate depth of characters and a number of first-rate actors portraying them. It's been said above, but it feels like a more grown-up series than the other shows.

Much of this stems from the level of ever-present danger in this setting with a powerful gang always threatening to unleash violence. It starts with an innocent act of rebellion and quickly escalates into a series of events that bring the characters into harm's way. These threats aren't from a speedster or time travelers or ninja assassins--it's something that any community can face.

If there's any criticism to be said, it's that sometimes the costume and the power use looks a little sketchy at times. And in the first two episodes, it's pretty much all non-super stuff and then a Black Lightning throw-down in the last ten minutes. Hopefully, they will vary that formula as the series goes on.

A very promising start and a series I look forward to seeing much more of!

I'm not 100% in love with the costume, which looks a little too neon and cheesy to me (but then again, it might be supposed to look a bit retro and out of date, given he's been out of action for almost a decade).

Other than that, I'm really liking the show so far.

What the eff was Lady Eve doing with that (still alive) body this week?

I'm, like, a month behind, but I just watched episode 8--and it really COOKED! The show is a little inconsistent in quality--not really big dips or anything--but some eps are a lot better than others. This one, with Jeff training Nissa, Gambi's secrets starting to come out and Jennifer making her own discovery, was just terrific! I loved every second of it! And that's not even mentioning the weird supernatural--and in one instance, kinda kinky--stuff going on with La-La, plus Lynn taking a more active role in the plot.

I'm really looking forward to catching up!

Just finished the season finale. While there was a bit of drag mid-season, overall I really enjoyed this first season, and it definitely ended solidly! Looking forward to future seasons!

I just watched another episode, though I'm still a few away from the finale. Is it wrong that I like Nissa's original makeshift costume much more than the one Gambi designed for her?

^^Yeah, I thought it had a lot of charm as well, especially the wig.
