After years of only appearing peripherally as background props on the series, the Legion of Super-Heroes finally gets mentioned by one of the characters, as Sheldon Cooper demonstrates knowledge of Element Lad's alter ego and powers...

Sheldon is first to solve that the riddle is for the geology lab. When Penny asks how he solved the riddle, Sheldon explains, “The word Arrah, Arrah in the riddle meant Jan Arrah, a member of the Legion of Superheroes, who is known as Element Lad. Then the word “HE,” it wasn’t the masculine pronoun, but rather HE, the abbreviation for Helium. Element Lad’s ability is the power to transmute chemicals elements. Helium has an atomic number of 2. If you multiple that by the atomic number of N, nitrogen, you get fourteen, which is the atomic number of Silicon, and that is the most common element in the Earth’s surface. So that narrowed it down to the geology lab or the chemistry lab. Finally the line “in this room the thing you’ll see” was an obvious reference to Fantastic Four member The Thing, who’s made entirely of [rock].”

Only on Big Bang Theory could you have a Legion of Super-Heroes reference and a Rolling Stones reference in the same scene!

ealier youTube link showing the riddle actually being read.

This, in my humble opinion, is the single greatest Legion reference in popular culture ever!

Partly because of the wide appeal and popularity of "Big Bang Theory", but equally because of the esoteric specificity of
Element Lad to *only* the Legion of Super-Heroes.

A bit of cheer to ward of the cancellation blues...

One more thing that makes the reference totally awesome is that not only was Jan's team affiliation mentioned, but so were his code name, real name and powers!

Yes telling the viewer not only the character name but the group he's in should help to direct the curious to their comic shop....where they will be disappointed smile

There's always the archives.

Let me put it this way: Instead of being from East Texas, perhaps Sheldon is really from Neptune. Perhaps his real name is Shell-Koop.

In another nod to Legion Lore, in last week's episode, "The Mystery Date Observation", Sheldon was wearing a t-shirt with the Green Lantern Oath printed on it in Interlac.
