Bananas are very good for you, but did you know frequent banana eating increases your chances of a fruit peel related accident by 43.64%?

Fun Fact: Olive Oyl's mother was named Nana Oyl, "Nana", like "nanner" being short for "banana".
The only character in all of literature who has been described as "badnass" while using the phrase "vile miscreant."

1. Nanners
Another name for the Norco pill. A perscription, schedule III, narcotic analgestic (pain killer)containing hydrocodone and acetaminophen (Tylenol). Hydrocodone is actually an opiate, like heroin, that gives an amazing euphoric body high but it's also very addictive (although not nearly as addictive as heroin). Norco is basically the same (better) as Vicodin and Lortab except that the ratio between hydrocodone:acetaminophen is much lower, making it much better for recreational use. Norco contains 7.5 mg or 10 mg of hydrocodone and 325 mg of acetaminophen. Acetaminophen, when taken in high doses (2,000+ mg) is very harmful to the liver. Normal vicodin pills contain 5 mg of hydrocodone and 500 mg of acetaminophen. Norco is perscribed for severe pain. So norco contains more of the good stuff and less of the bad stuff making it better and much more expensive on the streets. Norco pills are yellow in color, oval shaped with straight rounded sides, almost like an oval cylinder (not sure if it has a real name), there's also a cursive-looking "V" on one side and some numbers engraved on the other side with a line splitting the pill vertically.

Many of my relatives enjoy something they call "nanner candy". You may know them better as Circus Peanuts , orange taffy-like candies shaped like peanuts. I don't really care for them as they don't really taste all that nannery, IMO. When I visited mom last month I asked her why they're called "nanner" candy. She said they used to make them shaped like nanners and were yellow instead of orange. She also seemed to remember they tasted more nannery at the time.

Just peanut butter and nanners and bread, not even fried. I bet some Duke's mayonnaise would add some Southern tang, though. I have to say that your first course, nanner puddin, is one of my favorites.

I'm not fond of mayo (or "I-nez" as my family calls it) on them either. I like to cut my nanners into poker chip sizes and put 'em between two PB coated slices of bread! And let's not forget about nanner splits and nanner cream pies!

Memorable songs with nanner references: "Banana Boat Song", "The Name Game" & "Vicinity of Obscenity" (the latter by System of a Down which has the memorable refrain of banana, banana, banana, terra-cotta pie!).
Any others?

Ok never mind. Had some last week in something called 'Trail Mix'. My grandaughters, who love nanners, won't eat the dried nanner chips. Crazy kids.

Never had a plaintain. Frying a banana somehow feels, . . . wrong somehow, even though I know they're important in Caribbean cuisine. My mom made nanna cream pies 2 ways: 1. pie like with pudding (cooked), babanas, pie crust and whipped cream 2. the same but with nilla wafers instead of crust. I've made a fancy version with Ladyfingers instead of the nilla cookies. I bet any of them would be good with crushed macadamia nuts in the cookie/crust part! And a drizzle of dark chocolate over the top. This . . . feels like Heaven.

I still feel sad whenever I think of the "banana daquiri" scene from M*A*S*H and how poor Henry never made it home to enjoy one ever again.
So... anyone ever actually tried a banana daquiri?

BTW, I'm not normally a fan of bananas in anything but their natural state. I'll make banana bread or muffins once in a while to please mr_cleome, but they're not really my thing. However, the coffee shop on my way to work makes a banana-bittersweet chocolate chip muffin that's pretty damn amazing. I think it helps that I have to get up so early for work, which means that I can get my paws on the muffins when they're still warm from the oven. Yowza!

snicker Those are actually kinda practical. If I were still taking a lunch somewhere I might get one.
Has someone mentioned nanana catsup? I say it on 'Man vs. Food' the other day.
Nananers, rum, brown sugar, plus a couple other things, paired with peach chutney, a Caribbean chicken, hoagy and a cabbage and green onion cole slaw. Sounded yummy!

I don't know about the chips, but most Americans eat their bananas uncooked, most of the time, I guess. I can't make out the detail on the banana shaped shapes on the top of the picture, but the stuff in the pan looks like nanner pie with either whipped cream or maybe vanilla cookies, on top. And I think my grand kids would love nanners with apricot jam and crumbled cookies on top. They might even like the first two with CHIPS on top, too, since they like the 3 ingredients separately. Actually, they'll eat potato chips on almost anything. But, they're all under 10 yrs. old so maybe they don't count. ?

Bananas Foster looks sorta'... dangerous! I'd try cooking it but I really want to hang onto my eyebrows. At my age, if I lose them they're likely to grow back this color.

mmmmboy...bananas and bacon! Why have I never thought of that? :-(
And whoever is slicing that "new banana" is very quick. He/she is on the 7th cut and the first slice hasn't even hit the table yet.

A litte-known fact: "Naltor" is derived from the ancient (23rd Century) Interlac for the phrase "Mellow Yellow." Also, the planet was initially settled by Bohemians, much as Braal was first settled by Poles.

The essay went on to say that in the old days, landscapers would start a new rosebush off by placing a large, decaying beef bone in the ground a distance below it. The roots would "reach" for the bone and its nutrients and thus the plant would be anchored very stably in the ground, no matter how big it grew. We only have peonies in our yard, not roses. I wish we had a working camera, because they're having a terrific year. The crummy weather and my overall neglect of the yard last year has inexplicably made them thrive.

The Megalo-Mart tricked me into buying mini-bananas yesterday. They had them labeled as being about seventy cents a pound cheaper than they were when I got to the checkout line.
And by that time, I just wanted to get home with my newly-purchased painkillers ASAP, so I didn't bother to complain. (Yeah, I'm that much of a rube.)

cleome, I sense some inspiration at work. When will all these suggestive banana images you find coalesce into a work of art? You'll probably sell a bunch on Legion World alone.

Amongst other achievements, the 20th Century deserves credit for spreading "local" cuisine all over the country, but relieved of pesky seasonings or anything else that might actually make that cuisine interesting. Hey, we'll market Bananas Foster to the masses but without butter, liqueur, spices, fire, or anything else cool! Go, USA!P.S.- As for Maraschino cherries, they belong in the flavor Hall of Shame along with Iceberg Lettuce, White "Chocolate", and those styrofoam "baby" carrots. Bleah.

My breakfast lately is a delightful ensemble of oats, pomegranate juice, blueberries, walnuts, sunflower seeds, dried currants...and a nanner. Microwaved for 3 minutes.

Blaze and I had pancakes topped with bananas, honey, yogurt and peanut butter a while back. Relatively healthy, and good!

This morning, I made some banana-walnut bread. Then I went outside to putter in the yard. Now I'm enjoying my reward along with the last of this morning's iced coffee before I wash up and head out to work.

I love the flavor of bananas, but HATE THE TEXTURE. I feel like I'm going to gag every time I try to eat one, though I love them frozen. XD Any suggestions?

Turon - bananas, sometimes with jackfruit or mango, wrapped in a spring roll and fried with caramelized brown sugar. Good for a sugar rush!

Conjy you're awesome! I'm sure if I tried to make turon I'd get the wrapping all wrong. Peanut butter, hey it makes sense and I'm sure it tastes awesome with the bananas ^^ I'm sure cleome's recipes are amazing! (she sent me one for gingerbread before but I haven't been able to try it yet our oven doesn't work and the most I can do with it is heat pre-made pizza dough and roast vegetables ). Turon - bananas, sometimes with jackfruit or mango, wrapped in a spring roll and fried with caramelized brown sugar. Good for a sugar rush! That looks and sounds AMAZING! Too bad it's near-impossible for me to deep fry anything at home. I'll bring some over for you if/when I get to visit, cleome!

It's actually somewhat dry compared to a lot of quick breads. Also, I always add allspice to bump up the flavor. Baked bananas need some kind of spice, IMHO. Cinnamon would probably work, too. I also prefer pecans in there to walnuts, though either works fine.

Bananas and strawberry jello was something my Ma used to make all the time. I miss that. I'm sure I could make it. I don't think the recipe is all that difficult. Boil water. Stir in powder. Slice in bananas.
Wouldn't be the same.

I need to use the phrase "...needs to be flipped into the shrubs".
Also, I found I liked the idea of banana cue MUCH more when I learned it was NOT bananas with BBQ sauce. Deep-fried bananas coated in caramelized brown sugar? Yeah, I'll try that!

Well, that picture didn't explain the cue, so bein' a Southunuh, I was obliged to assume otherwise.
But caramelized brown sugar...oh yes!

Just tried out the cheap garage sale ice cream maker I picked up last month. Because we're also trying out a buyers' club and ended up with a ton of bananas, it was logical to make that the first ice cream flavor. Plus, I made some killer Banana Pecan Bread from my copy of James Beard's Beard On Bread. Woo!

BTW, I'm sorry that my old flickr banana links are going dead. After procrastinating for a century, I'm finally getting my images moved off there and over to ipernity. But I can't do a mass action and move everything at once. So it's going rather slowly. Anyway, here's the source of thoth lad's impromptu snack from a couple of days ago (in its new home): Kraft Miracle Whip/Mayonnaise Ad, c1933 par amylsacks, on ipernity

I used to routinely get nanners at work for my snack with lunch. But they're always too green. They come in super-green and are still too green on the day before the next truck arrives. Yeah, I know I could buy some, take 'em home and bring 'em to work when they're ripe--but damnit, I want instant nannerfication!!!!

I've seen some articles warning that a banana mass extinction is inevitable. The primary reason is that almost all the fruit raised worldwide is a single variety, which is very vulnerable to diseases and/or pests. There are lesser-known varieties which, for varying reasons, aren't seen as viable or profitable to raise and ship worldwide. So I guess even if those varieties continue on, our beloved fruit will ultimately become like peel-a-ble caviar. So my advice would be to gather ye nanners while ye may, green or not.

Dear Cleome, Since you posted your most recent excellent artwork, I've been making clocks out of nanners. Their curved nature makes them perfect for a clock face and the two curvy nanner clock hands make for interesting time telling. Now that's completely normal, and I'm sure we've all made nanner clocks at one time or another. What I'd like to know is if my phrase "You've always got time for a nanner" will take off? Or, will all the cool kids still be saying... I want instant nannerfication!!!! Or "gather ye nanners while ye may" ... in the months to come. I fear that my catchphrase not being cool enough will relegate Nanner Clocks behind Tangerine Tea-cosies and Kumquat Kettles as the must have kitchen accessory. Sincerely, Fruit (Loops) Lad

I made some banana bread with chopped dried cherries and pecans. I steamed it for four hours in the slow cooker instead of baking it in the oven. Good bread... cake... pudding. Whatever.

If you steam for about 3 1/2 hours, it will maintain some pudding-ish characteristics, especially while still warm.
But if you go for the full 4 hours, the overall texture is like fruitcake, but without that nasty rubbing alcohol-waxy fruit quality you get from the store-bought kind.
Hey, Kids! My "Cranky and Kitschy" collage art is now viewable on DeviantArt! Drop by and tell me that I sent you. *updated often!*
