I remember when Eryk, Lou, Abin and many others including myself were averaging over 100 posts a day. It was the summer of 2004.

During that time, I lived at my parent's house and had graduated college but had not gotten my current job yet. Instead, I was in Grad School and working parttime and therefore had tons of free time and access to computers during that free time.

I posted throughout the Dark Stu Saga from the Trinity College library when I should have been working on papers.

I remember hot summer nights of 2004 posting in my boxers on my laptop in my room at my parent's house *before* I would go out for the night (sometimes not until 11:00 or 12:00 PM--oh, the joys of no job and living like a vampire). Sometimes I'd come home so late it was essentially morning the next day and keep posting before I got any sleep. One such time, Hrun the Barbarian happened to have captured Lash Lad and forced him to be his slave, and as Security Chief I had to go rescue him. I did, and Hrun therefore captured EDE. Lash, naturally became jealous of this. Hysterically quick, this exchange took place within 25 minutes and then I was off to bed. And when I woke up, I couldn't wait to see what had happened since.

I remember the first Legion chat on the Yahoo group. Spear guns, hands being bitten off (Furball got better) and general chaos that can happen when more than 10 people are posting into a chat at one time.

Active LMB character is still Beast Boy.

One of my all-time favorite exchanges was between Pov, Tamper Lad, and myself in this thread.

Good times.

I wish Tamper and Pov would post more often these days.

I'll go with my first memory...

I had been posting my manips on a yahoo group called Legionpics.
One day I got a messge from "Therod" to join him and some others on the DC L* board, as I seemed to be a dedicated Legion fan.
Well I went, and quickly met the whole crew and joined in on the fun. Never before was I so quickly accepted into an on-line community. Those were crazy times, I recall several all night post-a-thons with cobie and lardi with other folks dropping in and out as the night progressed.

Okay, here’s a great Cobie/Deddy story:

When the LMB was still incredibly young and in its fourth month, the end of my freshman year was coming to an end and I had to go back to my parents for the summer and back then we didn’t have a computer. So I took a brief leave of absence from the LMB; when I returned, a few months later it was more on and off than I had initially been, and I had become much less prominent—eventually, I drifted away a second time around the end of the LMB’s first year and then was gone for a whole other year (my first great absence from the LMB). In the meantime, Dedman had come in about 6-7 months after the LMB formed and quickly became a mainstay LMBer of the early years. We interacted a bit, but kind of missed each other’s first really prominent eras. Then I returned in 2002 (meeting Pov, Stu and Ultra Matt for the first time) and quickly became a very prominent poster again (even becoming LMB Leader). Deddy had stayed a prominent poster since, taking the awesome moniker “Cannon-Fodder Kid”. It was at this time the LMB wound up on the legendary Phineas Board at the DCMB’s (see the history thread for pages of explanation that are quite hilarious).

So, when I really first got to know Deddy it was an exchange one late night on the Phineas Board where we were talking about various illegal substances that can “expand your mind”. Pov and Stu were also there. We got to talking about mushrooms, and Deddy offered to send me some. I, of course, accepted. We even briefly considered how it could be done. I suddenly got a quick message from Pov, who had become my buddy by then too: “um, do you really think planning sending drugs through the mail via the internet is a smart thing to do when you’re using a college campus computer?” Good ol’ responsible Pov! Because I was indeed thinking such a thing!

I always remember that exchange with Dedman sometime in the Spring of 2002 in the heyday of the Phineas Board. At the same time, Leap Year Lass joined the LMB; Lardy ran my successful campaign to be LMB Leader; Stu moved cross country and met several LMBers in person and Pov and I were shocked to learn we actually lived…5 minutes away from one another!

I remember in one of the Answering Questions With Questions Threads, at one point we were casting ourselves as characters from "Are You Being Served?" and I posted, "'Ere, kin oi be Miss Brahms?"

Another time, I spent a whole night compulsively posting about pudding because I had read a funny story in a music magazine about British pop star Lilly Allen getting into an argument with her mother over pudding.

One time I was trying to win the first Ultra Boy appearance on Ebay and my main competitor for it? Faraway Lad. He saw it was me and let me win the auction. Yeah, he's that great of a guy.

I've also been the recipient of free comics from Vee, Lightning Lad and others to fill in my collection over the years. I now own Vee's childhood copy of the Revolt of the Super-Pets. Helping each other out has become a great tradition; I couldn't wait to do the same so when I found out Invisible Brainiac desperately needed some Legionnaires issues that he couldn't find in the Phillipines but I knew my comic book shop had every week, I immediately got them for him and shipped them out. Because that's just a small part of what the LMB and Legion World do for one another.

I remember staging a fight between SharkLad and Psychotic Beaver in the Yahoo group chat room using two logins, only to screw up halfway through, much to Lardy's glee ... Psychotic Beaver "died" shortly thereafter ...

I remember the first time I saw a post from some guy named Cobalt Kid, and Cru/Spellbinder called him "Cobie Cakes" and I thought, he must be a real nice guy. (And he is.)

Another memory: after we crashed at Rob's boards, over at the LMBP group, Gary raised the idea of Legion World and I responded that it probably wasn't feasible, since it would entail an awful lot of work. It's a good thing he didn't listen to me!

I remember my first time posting; I think I said something along the lines of “I don’t see any role for Dawnstar, she’s a bit of a waste of space alongside some of the others, shes not particulary interesting or well written and other such inane things.

This was the first time i met Greybird............. eek

Well I think Cobie eventually found one of them on the floor under the screens in the mission monitor room and Lardy’s still looking for the other one.
lol

Yea, there were actually several of us that took great glee in that moment. I forget if Furball was still a secret at that point.

Aw, thanks FC. You were among the first Legion Worlders I met here (with Vee, Semi, Abin and Icey) and you guys were all so welcoming and fun. It's no wonder I couldn't stop coming back for more -- and never had a real absence again. Soon after I joined and had already gotten Thora pregnant which caused her to kidnap Space Ranger and threaten to invade LW (again) unless I married her; most of us prepared to invade Taltar but you sensibly said you'd plan for the wedding just in case. laugh

I have those cute little ramekins in the cupboard that I haven't used in ages. This totally makes me want to make homemade puddings and pipe the big "L" onto them in whipped cream and then post a picture on Webshots. Who knows? Maybe I will this weekend.

What says "Legion World" most accurately: Lime Cream or Mocha?

In the time I've been here, Rockhopper Lad has had a relationship with a man from a parallel universe where his own double is a galactic tyrant; developed super-breath; found and lost a "sister" from a parallel universe; acted as a mentor to Time Teller Lad and "Clive"; served as deputy leader; founded the Legion of Former Deputies; created several ice sculptures of Cobalt Kid; and dated Lard Lad!

And that's just the stuff that happens in character! wink

I remember when I met Kent (to date the only LWer I've met). It was shortly after christmas a few years back.
We met up in a bar and right away I felt like I had known him for years (I guess in a way I did).
We spent the night talking and drinking, doing quite a bit of bar-hopping along the way.
It was a very fun night!

I hope to meet more of you someday!

Kent is one of those people you can talk to for hours and hours about tons and tons of things. I remember realizing in the middle of a conversation that Kent clearly put into words how he felt about the threeboot Legion, the Geoff Johns return of the preboot Legion and what he'd like to see going forward for the Legion as a franchise and thinking from now I'm just going to let Kent speak first in Legion-related arguments and then come in after words and agree with him laugh

That moment literally happened at Foxwoods Casino with Abin about 2-3 years back.

You know, when we picked the first LMB Leader, it was LardLad who was elected. And now as the 10 year anniversary arrives its kind of fitting it coincides with the end of Lardy's 2nd term. Its all very cyclical.

I will freely admit to creating a id named Bounty with two other un-named posters to get Grey goat. We shared the id for a while and had a syntax for how they spoke so any of us could post without it seeming obvious.

I remember being amazed at 1st meeting Cobie in person, in a parking lot just off of I-90.

We'd barely gotten greetings done with and he was already diving into discussion about the then-current role play! Something else else to do with Red Bee. Gods, what a geek! I knew then an there we'd get along great!

If I died tomorrow (no plans, don't worry), I'd truly regret not getting to meet so many of you whom I haven't (especially those of you posting tonight).

When we were in Boston, LMB: Infinite Crisis had literally been running for about 3 months. Thus, the 12 (or so) of us had dinner together and Abin, Cru, Kent, Far, myself and many others plotted out how the whole thing should eventually end. It was the first ever LMB creative/editorial summit!

One of my standout memories is that I had the honor of being elected deputy leader (with Stu as leader) back in 2003/04. However, I had such trouble keeping up with all the roleplaying that I quickly did what deputy leaders and vice presidents have done since time immemorial: I faded into the background!

It also took me awhile to warm up to the inane threads that eventually became such a big part of the board. Now hardly a day goes by when I don't have something inane to post!

I remember pre-"Legion of Message board posters" when Lardi found out I was gay, likely on his WHO ARE YOU thread, which is the true point where we all began to get to know each other. He seemed a little surprised. I remember being a little concerned I let that info out at first, but it quickly became a non-issue.

Then came all the gay flirting...

It was funny when Space Tart (in her original version) was revealed to be Lash; this is after *heavy* flirting between Spacey and myself for weeks. I took it all in stride and caught on to a noticeable trend: the more I flirted with the female Alt IDs of gay posters, the more Cobalt Kid became a legendary ladies man in LMB lore. I've been milking it ever since wink

Oni:

in Japanese folklore, a type of demonic creature often of giant size, great strength, and fearful appearance. They are generally considered to be foreign in origin, perhaps introduced into Japan from China along with Buddhism. Cruel and malicious, they can, nevertheless, be converted to Buddhism. Though oni have been depicted in various ways in Japanese legend and art, sometimes also as women, they are characteristically thought of as pink, red, or blue-grey in colour, with horns, three toes, three fingers, and on occasion with three eyes.

Beyond any doubt, my proudest moments are collaborating with EDE to write MATTER-EATER LAD: THE SERIES (I will NEVER stop finding ways to plug it!!) and Sketch Lad asking me to write a short STARSEARCHERS story for him (and then having him want to do a regular net-comic!!).

EDE and I just seemed so in-synch as co-writers (and this is with very little discussion about what we were going to write) and Dean has a rare talent for making the most out of very little.

Don't wanna embarrass you guys or myself, but I truly am proud of what we created and continue to create.

Wow, I hope I didn't post anything too weird at the time! I actually have no recollection of reacting to your "outing". I wouldn't be too surprised if I 'stammered' a little--I was a little sheltered and never knew anyone who was openly gay at the time. It was definitely a new experience for me, but I never "ew, I don't like MLLASH any more cuz he's gay!"

In a way the LMB has been an education for me about sexual diversity. I was never anything resembling a hater before the LMB, mind you, but there was a certain mystery there and trepidation about the unknown, I suppose.

What I learned very quickly among the LMB is that gay people are just people like everyone else, and there was no reason to be shy or worried about it in any way. Since then, I've worked with some openly gay men in my workplace, and I laugh and cut up with them just like I would anyone else, regardless of what some of my less tolerant co-workers may think. A kid I currently work with teases me about being fat, and I tease him about what a travesty to human nature Celine Dion is! lol It's all good!

And of course....

Last year, it just seemed like the most natural evolution in the world for my troubled Lard Lad character to explore a romantic relationship with the character who'd become his biggest confidante and most supportive friend. I was a little afraid to push it in that direction because I wasn't sure what everyone else would think about it.

Would everyone assume that I, Lardy the poster behind the character, was outing myself by taking this unprecedented (?) step in a roleplay? Sure, other posters had roleplay romances with males calling the shots behind the scenes, but in character these were still heterosexual relationships. What would it mean for an openly heterosexual poster to explore a homosexual relationship with his character and that of a homosexual character?

Ultimately, I went for it. The crazy thing is that Rocky and I never talked about developing this behind the scenes. We just let it happen, let it develop and Rocky ultimately let me make the big move in-character when Lardy declared his love for Rocky. I don't even know if John was expecting it! But on cue, Rocky let Lardy know that he reciprocated, and they consummated it right there with a kiss!

The hilarious thing is that the whole incident went with nary an OOC comment! I thought there'd be all kinds of commentary and stuff, but everyone just took it at face value and moved on! laugh

Now, my only worry is that the perennially tortured and dark Lard Lad may have to scrape and claw for his trademark angst because he'll be hard-pressed NOT to live happily ever after with Rocky! lol Ten years ago, that storyline woulda NEVER have been possible!

Since he and I have never planned or talked behind the scenes about the relationship, I'd be curious to know how John sees and saw the whole thing as it evolved.

Still "Lardy" to my friends!

I have yet to take a look at Starsearchers but I intend to when I get the time.

But I do remember spending an ENTIRE DAY in the Summer of 2004 reading 24 pages of Matter-Eater Lad: the Series and marveling at what a brilliant, hilarious job you guys had done. Plant Lad and so many others suddenly became so freaking kewl! And I even got a character to be named after me for becoming your biggest fan! smile

Lardi, I never meant to imply you were anything other than momentarily surprised... your good nature about it all is what I believe led to several other poisters being comfortable about 'outing' themselves at the old DC MB! You rock! Holt

I loves me some Terri Nunn too, but TMBA was my least fave song of theirs, and definitely led to the band's demise!

Also, like Lardy, my interaction with the LMB has helped give me some life experience in diversity that I've carried with me ever since. I've mentioned this a few times over the years, but at 18 years old, I had never really known anyone who wasn't strait before. Two major things happened: I had a bi-sexual roommate and I met the huge amount of gay posters who were my fellow LMBers. All these years later its become so second nature that I don't even think about it anymore. I always considered myself an ally (in fact, I believe I posted that exact thing 10 years ago pre-LMB on the DCMBs), and now I'm pretty pleased to know I've been just that for all these years. The pleasure has been all mine!

The Motels Anthology "Anthologyland" has their demo of TMBA. It's much better than Berlin's.

Re: The Lardy/Rocky relationship: There actually was some precedent for it: Clive and Time Teller Lad dated for several months before this. Lardy and I both had played romantic involvement with the other before. Now, it's well-known throughout the LW membership that Lardy is, in real life, a straight guy with a wife and kids and everything--and I've most certainly never kept my being gay a secret. Still, when it looked as though that was the direction the characters were going became obvious, I asked him to make sure. Next thing I knew, we naturally and organically grew this development into the mix.

How about that! wink

I think we were actually testing the waters a little with TTL and Clive. The big difference is that those were alts and this time it was the prime IDs. TTL was always gay, and Clive was a new consciousness just discovering himself. Lardy was notoriously heterosexual, though longtime posters may remember a thread in which I posited that the character of Lard Lad may in fact be open to all the possibilities. In that thread the angle I took it was more from a hedonistic standpoint, however, as opposed to romance.

I remember you asking me about the possibility of Clive and TTL, but I don't ever remember us talking about it with Lardy and Rocky. Are you sure we did, John? From what I recall, it more or less just happened as we both kind of pushed it there and played off each other.

The day I registered at the old DC Boards was the same day Lash posted the original Legion of Message Board Posters thread, so in a sense Loser Lad was 'born' the same day as the LMB. From the virtual Road Trips to Wizard World (I'm still pissed at Baby Booyah) and the CBR Boards to the actual road trips to Niagara Falls and Boston the LMB has been a big part of my life for the past 10 years. And even though I tend to disappear for...well...years at a time you guys have always been here for me when I need you most.

Thanks for all the laughs. You guys are the bestest.

I just checked. There was a vaguely-worded PM exchange before it happened. Otherwise, I guess it really did just happen organically. smile

I remember the Niagara trip: me, Pov, Cobie, Faraway and Gigglebot in the hotel lounge/bar, waiting for Lou, knowing him only by an email pic.

When we see him, there's no reaction to our calls of "Bill." As the likely candidate seems to be heading away from us, we all start calling out "Loser!"... earning a few odd looks from strangers, but finally catching his attention.

This was after Pov caused an international incident, of course.

Boston, walking down the street next to Cobie, who had an inflatable sheep under his arm. The looks and comments we got were priceless.

Also in Boston, an "L" shaped dinner table, an Aussie Waitress, Qius, STU, and Miner keeping everyone rolling with laughter.

The first San Diego Trip, meeting Legion John, STU, and Kent in Vegas, the top of the Stratosphere Tower and STU wanting to ride the single most insane ride ever... I still have nightmares...

Meeting Gary, Kabir and the rest in San Diego, the lovely Caliente vamping every DC Writer or Artist she could latch onto, Kent and I talking Legion with Paul Levitz for a good half hour as the crowds swirled around us at the DC Booth.

The Second San Diego Trip, Rocky, CJ, Director Lad, Actor Lad, Seymour, Quis, Miner, Cobie, STU, Cali, Actor, Far, Jen, LL, SG, Gary, Kabir, Rhonda, Exhnil...

on and on and on...
